I am a student trying to build my portfolio. I will design your website and create social media content for free!

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 06:39 PM PST

Yes, for free. There is no catch. I am in the stage of planting seeds for my web design and marketing business. My professional website is coming together, but I don't have any live projects to showcase.

I love art and technology, and the web is that sweet spot where the two perfectly combine. I want to give you a beautiful and effective website with the social media presence to match. Your digital brand will reflect my business just as much as yours, so I will make your web presence so fresh and so clean.

Please reach out to me in a comment or PM if you are interested or have any questions.

EDIT: This is already getting more attention than I anticipated. I will get back to all of you when I can — I want to hear your ideas. If you want to get your site up as soon as possible, please describe your goals and attach existing webpages/social media accounts. Thanks guys! I'm excited. Private messages are fine, but an email to mariah @ codincat.io might speed things up a bit. 😁

Trying to pay for my education with a business, hoping it will go well

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:07 PM PST

    Hello There....

So, i am starting my own small biz at Monterrey, México; and things have been crazy since, and i haven't even started. I'm going to open at the end of February; i think this is a better way of paying for my education, becasue working right now has little revenue, bad paying jobs.

I have felt the days go longer and time go slower... Sleep less hours, and living with a wierd paradox about caring about what the people thinks about the business but not enough to go through my skin. I am growing kinda slow in social media, (feel free to send me a follow on Ig at @BreakMty).

I am not very popular and I have moderate depression and drugs are working fine. I am hoping i will make it. I hope, maybe, I can do a living for a while with this. going to keep you guys updates.

picture of a friend at the place, it is going to be a Rage Room.

Mail carrier constantly misdelivers, postmaster refuses to do anything: Options?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 06:29 PM PST

We have a small business that sends and receives a lot of mail via the United States Postal Service. The carrier constantly delivers our mail to neighbors (we're in a residential zone) and brings us our neighbors' mail as well. When a mortgage payment and credit bill both arrived late, we called the post office and complained. It's only the second time we've officially complained since the current postmaster arrived four months ago and so she refuses to do anything about the carrier. What are our options to resolve this issue, short of getting a PO box and/or doing bills online?

    Potential startup idea

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 04:33 AM PST

im a 19 years old currently doing my graduation. So i came up with a business idea last night and i would like to get honest feed back on it. So here is the idea! Im going to hire a good writer and will make him write a good 20000 words book for me, im only going ti produce 100 copies of this books and will sell it online on my website for 15500 USD each, now the main question is why would anyone on earth buy my book for 15.5k so here is the twist, all the 100 books will be same hit each on of it will have a different ending. Yeah you heard it right same book with different ending for different owner. To make our book valuable we will make it hard to buy like the buyer will first have to fill a fork on our website and then he will get a mail of weather whether he is selected to buy the book or not. Our book will have a very luxurious packaging and will have a certificate in it which will ensure it being the only version out of 100. High class people will want to buy it as the will know that 100 people do have the same book but no one of them have the same ending as i have the idea seems anticipating. My target market will be millionaires. Please give honest feedback

Accidentally emailed an employee a copy of multiple W2s

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:43 PM PST

Hi guys, I am a small business owner that pretty much handles all aspects of the business we are a very small seasonal business with 14 employees (all part time high school workers). While emailing out encrypted files of W2s this past week, I accidentally sent one of the employees the master file containing all 14 W2s.

I believe when I copied the one form into a new clipboard it accidentally was selecting each W2 and so when I encrypted it I couldn't see a preview of the many pages it contained.

I already contacted the employee and they agreed to delete it and they are also a family friend, I want to know how big of a deal I should make this within my company and if I could be in any kind of legal trouble for this. I understand how serious this is and I really want to make sure I do the right things, I do believe that the master file was definitely deleted off of that persons computer but I know how to proceed from here.

.Net vs. .Com for email and domain -- does it matter?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:33 PM PST

I'm a mktg and entertainment consultant and I keep questioning myself by giving people my personal gmail account when I need to do business (probably doesn't look as legit as it should and I should have a website,etc.).

I've been slacking on creating a website/biz email. I am perusing domains on GoDaddy and I have to ask... Is there a significant difference between the 'perceived' legitimacy or SEO behind a company that has [XXXXXXXX@blahblah.net](mailto:XXXXXXXX@blahblah.net) or .com? How about websites?

Since I will be using this primarily for referrals, I can't imagine I will get a lot of google traffic. But maybe one day I will advertise my website.

Should I focus on tailoring my new business name and email to what I can buy on domains? Or should I grab that cheap $7 a year .net domain and call it a day...

Thinking of Taking over Golf Cart Business

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:45 AM PST

    Hi Guys,

I have been given an opportunity to take over a golf cart modification business, but it has been run into the ground. I need your help with what kind of questions I need to be asking before I dive into this venture. Essentially I figure I am going to have to start all over again to be successful. I already have requested sales and client lists. I have a meeting set up with the current owner to discuss the recent downtrend in business which is related to poor management.

How do you audit a business? What questions should I be asking, any websites or checklists outlining what to look for before acquiring a business would be great.

In short the business really at this point only has assets, manufacturing equipment, warehouse, cnc machines, metal presses etc. This is a b2b company focusing on building custom golf cart trailers, limos, ADA modifications, etc, and works with golf cart dealers only.

    Thank you for your help.

Shipping frozen products - need advice. South Carolina, new business idea.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:10 AM PST

I have a frozen product idea that I am currently testing in local markets, but I would like to expand. Ideally, my B2B customers would be food trucks, breweries, farmer's markets, and some restaurants or other businesses.

This idea is at the very beginning. I think I have a good name and domain name to buy for it, but I don't know the packaging or shipping process being that it's a frozen product. Because the product is in the development phase, there's a chance I could make it refrigerator safe instead of frozen, but that will take more R&D (more time than money, though).

Besides the product and domain name, the pros I have working for me right now are the following: I don't have a lot of competition (although it would be somewhat easy to knock off and difficult to patent); I work in the restaurant/hospitality industry, but I don't work with any food trucks currently; my girlfriend works at a brewery part-time and has a good connection with a few other local breweries - this product is not for human consumption, but rather for pet consumption - she would be able to use these breweries, some of which have food trucks or are pet friendly to test price points and local demands; and the product is could be high margin and easy to make, especially if I were to outsource packaging and production.

What other things do I need to keep in mind? Also, if anyone ships frozen products, could you please provide advise on how to successfully ship product without melting?

My initial costs for supplies and R&D are estimated at $500. Grass roots marketing would help a ton, especially while I ramp up to meet the expected demand. Marketing would be mostly focused on Facebook and Instagram to grow the business outside of my nearby cities. I have about $40-50k that I could put towards this, but I am also looking to purchase a home soon, so I would have to put that off if I were to tap into those funds. For the most part, this will be a side project, unless is grows faster than I anticipate.

Side note: I set up an LLC in my state based on bad tax advice regarding my current job. I would have to double check if I could use the existing LLC for this side business. The LLC I set up is for consulting, but I don't know how strict South Carolina is on what the LLC actually does.

Thank you in advanced for the advice! I will answer any questions I can without giving out too much information.

How do you keep an eye on cash flow in your company?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:00 AM PST

    Hey Guys,

I work as a Team Leader in a Software House (16 employees, AR $575,000), where we create mobile apps and software for clients. I am really interested in how you keep an eye on cash flow in your companies. Not from an accounting point of view, but rather a high level perspective from CEO, Team Leader and Finance Manager.

As a Team Leader I am responsible for achieving positive cash flow and employee management in which team has to have enough long term tasks. I don't issue the Invoices, but I need to know about the actual and planned company numbers (balance, income, expenses and profit). I track these numbers (every entry) in Google Sheets. But It's really annoying.

I don't want to create Invoices. I don't have time for that. I want to track company numbers the simplest way possible. I want to focus on my job, business and planning.

    • Do you have similar problem or need with Invoices?
    • How do you track your company numbers?
    • What is your company's core business and revenue?

I really appreciate anyone who will join this discussion.

Anyone here DBE certified? I have some questions.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 10:25 PM PST

I'm in the process of getting DBE certified and will soon be visited for the interview, where they will also take photos.

-What type of questions will they ask?

-Are you allowed to be DBE certified for your small business you've created if you also have a day job?

-Has it actually helped your company get contracts?

On retail pricing with over 100 various products

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:42 PM PST

Hi all, pricing is familiar to us mostly in retail. It's easier for businesses like clothing or specific product line of 4, 5 items. But when talking about various products like a bookstore for instance, the number of products can exceed 100 or 1,000 even (without a clear categorization) and if we add markup (40-50%) on each book, the list price of one book would be too much. So fixed profit should be used, like $3-5 each book sold. And this is a general idea that is applied.

My question is, for such businesses like this, is there any other pricing strategies that can be used?

Customer ignoring me and refusing to pay, first time I've been in this situation

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 09:33 AM PST

Long story short: Had issues adding customers card to our booking software initially. She's been ignoring our calls, texts, emails, and email invoice for the past month.

My suspicion is they think they'll not have to pay because their bank is blocking online card purchases.

I'm considering small claims court or handing it over to a collections agency. I haven't used either and am just looking for some advice. I'm leaning towards a collection agency but the bill is so small ($200), would anyone take it?

Started Subscription E-Comm Store, Struggling with Pricing

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 05:21 PM PST

I took the plunge and created a subscription based e-comm service. My service can't totally compete with box stores in price but the service of home delivery is beneficial in other ways (can also save you money).

Shipping absolutely kills me. It accounts for almost 60% of my costs. Right now I'm offering free shipping in the local area (which I can offset by delivery myself) and flat rate to more distant regions.

I'm torn on pricing. Due to my web developer having some issues with coding I can't offer one time (50 percent off first order) or long term discounts (10 percent off forever) until late March. For this reason I'm not sinking lots into marketing.

That being said, I'm concerned prices might be too high based on adoption rate. Should I lower them to where I'm just over break even to grow my base? Or stay where I am until I can offer enticing discounts and marketing. To reduce my margins AND then offer discounts will be hard to recover because my customers lifetime value is a slow build.

This is my side hustle, so any money I make will go right back into the company.

The eventual goal is to lower costs through economies of scale and eventual third party logistics etc.

    Thoughts?

Ex. Product 1 - Recurs every three months.

    Timekeeping in Construction Industry

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 02:33 PM PST

    Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions or success in this field. We are a general contracting/construction company typically operating in 1-5 states at any given time. As of late, we have been noticing a lot more employees "stealing hours" on further away projects. They are either making stops on their way to jobs or writing inaccurate start times. I am kicking around the idea of vehicle tracking, fingerprint clock in or just about anything that will work. On larger jobs, we have a job trailer where we could implement something like a fingerprint scanner or other, but on smaller repair jobs where we are only somewhere for half a day, I don't know if vehicle tracking would be better? Looking for any advice on this or if anyone has any better solutions. Thanks in advance!

Opinions needed: what do you think of free samples, just pay shipping?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 12:47 PM PST

I just read a thread where somebody said that the first rule of retail club is never to devalue your product. Offer the product plus free shipping instead.

This is interesting to me because I am about to start promoting 'free samples, just pay shipping'. I have a candle company where it's hard to get new customers who can't smell the product before they buy it. I was going to offer five free scent samples, just pay shipping charges, in hopes of gaining more sales. Of course the flat rate shipping fee would still give me profit on those free samples. I read that giving something away ends in a return customer 25% of the time. I figured it would build trust. What are your thoughts on this scenario? TIA.

What to do with my LLC?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 08:05 PM PST

I'm now looking to start freelancing and I'm wondering if I can change the LLC to a sole proprietorship? My other question is, is there anything I should be filling out although I haven't done anything with the LLC?

Sending Flyer via Mail to our Specific Database -- Advice?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 01:16 PM PST

Hey all, we have a database of 500 people who have been in our program. We want to send a flyer in the mail to them, we think it will be effective for our niche. The flyer is already finished.

What's the best way to send that in the mail? Anyone used any services that can print and send for you? The task of writing on 500 separate flyers seems overwhelming.

*(Note: I don't want to do EDDM, but send to our list of names :).
