    Feedback for small business idea?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 05:34 PM PST

Hi, I'm looking for feedback on my small business idea,"The Philosopher's Cafe". Do you like the idea, or have suggestions?
This is an idea based off of the origins of modern cafes, where philosophers would go to write and chat and generate new ways of thinking. It would be located in downtown Halifax, preferably in a brick building. The interior would be wood panelled with round tables and faux leather armchairs. The cafe would mainly cater to people between the ages of 20-40 and general university students or graduates. The cafe would serve french-pressed local coffee with options for milk, milk substitute, honey, or maple syrup. There would also be freshly baked bread and cinnamon rolls on offer daily. During the evenings the cafe would offer philosophy gatherings open to anyone to discuss different topics with an assigned theme each night. These gatherings would be advertised weekly on Facebook, Twitter, in the Coast news paper and on a sign outside the cafe. All prices for the menu would be 2-4$. Admission to the nightly gatherings would be 4$ and would include a small coffee or tea.

    What shold i do?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:53 PM PST

Im a hairdresser working for a Guy who owned 5 saloons. Last week he told me that I could buy 25 % of one of his saloons and at first I got hyped about the opportunity but the more I think the more I get scared about the risk of taking over something that huge. I'm only 24 and had my own online business before. He told me that he sees the potential of something huge if we collaborated but I'm afraid I'm to young. I know that if I buy my share that my boss would kick an employee that costs him a lot. And I know that he will put almost all of the responsibilities on me. The salon is in a mall and has 12 employees. It's been ther for 47 years with a lot of customers. What should I think about before taking my decision?

How to find a mentor in the restaurant/service industry?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 06:16 PM PST

Hi all, I am a computer engineering student. I worked for a long time as a waitress to make ends meet, and would love to take the plunge and start my own business in the restaurant industry. I am trying to learn more about the business side before taking the leap. Would really love some advice/mentorship. Where should I go and find people willing to help someone just starting out?

Are Google Adwords worth it for my segment? (B2B)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 06:58 PM PST

I manage the marketing for a small B2B service business. We provide software solutions for small/medium businesses. In your experience, what should my expectations be? We are currently just doing cold-calls and have been somewhat successful so far, but I would like to have MY phone ring for once (or receive emails for warm-leads). Ideas? or feedback?

Thank you very much for your time and for replying!

How to begin a housebuilding business with no money, and mediocre personal credit?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 10:25 PM PST

Hey guys, I want to start my own business building houses. I have almost no money in my bank account, however I've got 2 things in my favor. My family owns a groundworking and dirt business, (access to bulldozers and trackhos, only will cost me the cost of the gas I use) and on my dads side, 20 years of experience owning a company building houses. Heres the catch: hes kind of a "make your own way" kind of guy, so while he offers me advice on the actual house building process, he is refusing to offer advice on the startup process/how to get investors. He told me once I figured out the very beginning, he would guide me somewhat but it would be mostly a sink or swim type venture. I have poor-mediocre personal credit from poor choices when I was younger, and the reason I have no money now is because of fixing those past mistakes. Any advice?

    Small Business Owner Retirement Options

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:29 PM PST

    Hello All,

I am a little over a year deep into successfully launching my small business. I have two employees with no benefits (yet).

What are my options for retirement? Is this complicated because I have employees? Is this complicated because I am not offering benefits?

Edit: I am looking for advice on personal retirement and not administering retirement benefits.

    Edit2: I have a single member LLC

Royal Mail - tracking stuck at "we've got it message" - possibly stolen by staff member

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 07:36 AM PST

I send a lot of packages daily, so I don't monitor tracking until customer alerts me that there's a problem but I have started seeing a very weird patter occurring but I don't want to jump the horse and accuse anyone but this is becoming a serious problem.

3 months ago, a new person started working at my local PO. Since then,, more and more packages have got tracking stuck at "we've got it" and never updating again. I have started going through all the tracking and this only happens when that specific person is scanning them (mind you not every time, usually when there's not a lot of staff working). Now, I realise that when it's not scanned properly, tracking won't update until delivery attempt is made but none of those packages did. But, none of those packages were ever delivered, it seems that they haven't even left the post office after it was dropped off. I don't want to accuse anyone but I genuinely have a feeling that those packages were stolen.

Obviously, those packages that are deemed lost by now were claimed but how would you go about this situation. Talk to the manager, so he can investigate or report higher up. I am genuinely concerned as this is the first time I have had so many packages get lost after scanning.

Starting my first business - a response to the typical replies that seem to be given on Reddit

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:01 AM PST

I appreciate any help people can provide, but the answer that seems to be given most is "speak to an attorney / professional" which isn't helpful for someone totally new to this. That isn't the first step, there are a bunch of steps before that I don't know either.

I don't know any lawyers, I don't know how to find the right type for what I need or what the average cost may be. I don't know if there is anything I need to be wary of in picking one or questions I should ask to help decide. I don't even know if my question is even right to ask a lawyer! Some of them seem simple and a waste to pay a lawyer for a "yes" or "no" answer.

People seem to think that throwing money at the problem is a realistic answer too. Not everyone has thousands of dollars to put towards starting a small business. I'm not creating a startup trying to be the next Facebook and looking for venture capital to burn through. I'm trying to build a small local business at a low startup cost to ensure I can pay the bills while things start slowly. It is disheartening to be told "you must not be serious about it" because I don't want to spend hundreds or thousands before I even have my first customer.

I feel like I have simple questions that other business owners who have been in the same boat could provide some insight into but rarely seem to be willing to do.

Things like; In California, can I use a real address PO Box when registering the business? Does anyone else feel weird about putting their home address into a public database?

Should I use a company like legalzoom? Are they any good or is it a waste of money? Any alternatives to recommend?

Where have people found a registered agent? I feel like every site I find is self advertising and I'm worried about being tricked. Any recommendations? Ditto on a lawyer?

I'm sure there are indexes / sites out there to help but it seems like no one replying are ever willing to link or provide personal experience.

Maybe it's just bad luck on my part for getting bad replies but it's disheartening. Sorry for the rant...

Company is turning 20 and hosting a networking breakfast. What are some good marketing ideas?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 08:07 AM PST

What are some good ideas for marketing materials? I had some pens made with the company logo and phone number. We will be decorating a table but we're not sure what else to have. This is a networking breakfast set up by the BBB (USA) and breakfast is catered in. Other companies have been invited. We want to make this a nice experience and also promote the business further. The company is a cleaning business, specializing in window cleaning and cleaning of new construction homes getting ready for the new homeowner to move in.

With it being the 20 year anniversary, we want to promote the business further but I'm not sure what we should do after this breakfast.

    Thanks!

Is it possible to obtain financing if it is backed by an ownership stake of an asset?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:12 PM PST

Example, I entered in to a business agreement for the purchase of a large asset. My ownership stake is 20%. That 20% can now show up on one of my business' balance sheet as an asset. Provided that the 20% represents enough capital, would I be in position to leverage it for a loan?

Premium Finance Agreement...For product liability insurance

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 05:42 AM PST

Our broker got us a decent price for PLI. He then states here is the paperwork for the loan to pay it off. I'm like what? I've never heard the word loan used for paying insurance. When it is my car or other types of insurance. You pay a down payment then the rest is monthly. Here there is a down payment and the remainder we pay but with interest. The interest is 364 for the year but seems odd to me to have a loan. Is this normal for PLI payments?

FYI: Insurance is through company A. Loan is through company B. We are located in California

Need help determining what kind of company to form (Sole Prop, LLC,etc)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 08:47 AM PST

I've tried to find some answers online, but I can't seem to find anything clear. Maybe I'm just not searching right...

I build custom computers. I've been doing it for friends and family for the last few years, and I really enjoy it. I don't charge much beyond cost of parts, usually about $50.

I'd like to start a business doing this for anyone, not just those close to me, while also charging more. I have a 9-5 that I enjoy, and have no intention of leaving. This would just be supplemental income.

I'm pretty sure my best bet is to go Sole Prop with a DBA, but I honestly don't know if there are any pitfalls to going this route.

    Any advice?

How to engage with your Twitter followers & get Twitter traffic on AutoPilot

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 07:28 AM PST

It's not just the US President that uses Twitter to keep in touch with a Global audience. Twitter is a great social platform used by individuals, small businesses and multinational corporations for sharing information, engaging in discussion, keeping your clients abreast with what's going on and lots more.

I when I first starting using Twitter I soon realized you need to devote quite a lot of time to be seen as active and have a strong engagement with your followers. All that can change though with a tool called TweetPush which does so much of the grunt work on Autopilot.

These are some of things that it will handle for you:

    • Grab traffic from trends based on locations and keywords & hashtags.
    • Find qualified leads and connect with them automatically.
    • Auto-reply, retweet, direct messages help you create engagement fast.
    • Monitor mentions, replies, and engage prospective leads quickly.
    • Get in front of buyers right when they want to buy.
    • Create campaigns and connect your RSS feeds & YouTube channel to Twitter.

If you are all for saving time and energy with your one element of social media activities check out TweetPush
