    Discount negotiation on settlement Insurance

    Discount negotiation on settlement

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 10:24 PM PST

So I was involved in a car accident a few weeks ago where I was the one at fault. Today I received a letter from the other driver's insurance company telling me that the repairs to their car was around $5800. For personal reasons, I'm not going through my insurance and I've decided that I'm going to pay for the damages out of pocket. I've read online that sometimes insurance companies will give discounts on settlements if they know they'll receive the money in a lump sum (as opposed to paying in installments over x amount of time). Money's not really an issue for me, but I'd rather pay less if I can. I was thinking of calling up in the morning and asking for the amount be reduced to $5000 ($800 discount). Is this a reasonable amount to ask for? If not, what would be a more reasonable amount?

TLDR: Insurance company is asking for $5800. Would negotiating the amount down to $5000 be too much to ask for?

Does dental insurance cover a pre existing balance?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:12 PM PST

Hi, I had a few procedures done last year (fillings, cavities, cleanings). I was offered dental insurance at a new job and was wondering if they would cover a pre existing balance of when I didn't have insurance.

    Question about health insurance deductible

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:40 PM PST

I have a deductible of $500. I had a scan of my gallbladder mid-January and they charged me $500 exactly. I didn't get my bill until now, and I recently had to get an MRI for an injury that's been bothering me for the past year. They also are charging me a little less than $500. My question is, if I pay the first bill, will my insurance cover the remaining charges on the second?

Health insurance can't figure out how to coordinate my benefits. I don't know what to do.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 09:34 AM PST

Throwaway account because my friends/family will know its me.

Background: I am American. When I was a child, I moved here, but my parents lived abroad working for a foreign company. As such, I had no health insurance through my parents like most Americans. Since childhood, my family paid out of pocket for private insurance for me, before the ACA. Flash forward to 2018, where I get my first job. My employer gives me insurance. I decide to keep my private insurance anyway, for a variety of reasonable reasons that I am not looking to debate right now. As per federal rules, my personal insurance should be my primary insurance because it is the one longest in effect. So the current situation is that I have two insurances:

    • Primary Insurance: personal carefirst bluecross blueshield grandfathered plan that I pay for with my own money. It is NOT connected to my parents in any way, and I am the non-dependent policyholder. Member ID is ABC 123456 (made up number)
    • Secondary insurance: employer-provided HSA with carefirst bluecross blueshield. Member ID is DEF 123456

Two things to notice here. First, both my insurances are with the same insurer. Second, the member ID is the same except for the first three letters.

Issue: As I understand it, the doctor is supposed to first send a claim to the primary insurance, then send it to the secondary. The issue is that whenever my doctor enters my primary insurance ABC 123456, their computer system automatically routes it to DEF 123456. It's like the computer system doens't know ABC 123456 exists. The DEF 123456 system then fails to adjust any claims, because it recognizes that the primary has not adjusted any claims first. I will know go step-by-step to let you guys know what I have done so far to resolve this, so that you can advise me.

    • Step 1: I called Carefirst's Coordination of Benefits (COB) hotline to coordinate the two insurances. I called 8662852611. I selected OPTION TWO for employer-paid insurance. I got someone on the line. I told them to make ABC 123456 (private insurance I pay for) the primary and DEF 123456 (employer insurance) the secondary. They say Ok. Issue resolved, or so I thought.
    • Step 2: I go to the doctor a few months later. I get the bill back with NOTHING adjusted. I owe 600$ for something that usually costs 30$. I freak out
    • Step 3: I call the doctor's office. I ask them, "Did you run the bill through both my insurance." They say, "our computer system only shows your secondary insurance as DEF 123456. There is no primary insurance on here." I say, "that's weird. Ok, my primary is ABC 123456. Please run that first." The billing office says, "hmm, when I type ABC 123456 in, the system automatically reroutes to DEF 123456." I say, "can you call Carefirst and ask." Billing says, "no, you need to ask Carefirst to call us." Ok whatever.
    • Step 4: I call member benefits using the phone number ON THE BACK OF MY PRIVATE INSURANCE card. I tell them the issue. The person says, "that's weird. On our computer system, it shows ABC 123456 as the primary and DEF 123456 as the secondary (that's correct), but there seems to be more information (I don't know what that means) for the secondary than the primary. I think COB made an error in coordination. Please call them at 8662852611." Ok fine. Weird that I have to call all these departments and Carefirst won't centralize it, but whatever.
    • Step 5: I call COB. I click OPTION TWO for employer-paid insurance. I get someone on the line. I explain what the member benefits person said. The COB person says my information is correct on her system. Her system accurately shows that ABC 123456 is primary and DEF 123456 is secondary. I ask her what to do. She says to call member benefits.

I am so frustrated. I just had a couple surgeries and I cannot afford a $20k bill right now. I am up-to-date on both insurances, so this seems so unfair. Everyone is rerouting me to everyone. The doctor refuses to call Carefirst. Carefirst refuses to call the doctor. Guys, what do I do? Should I get a lawyer? Thanks for any help!

PS: for simplicity, I only included one doctor visit in the story. In reality, 3 different doctors offices with 3 independent billing departments have run into this issue, so it isn't just the one billing employee fucking up. It's something in the computer system. I will cross-post this on /r/personalfinance and /r/legaladvice. Thanks

EDIT: to clarify, I am non-dependant on BOTH my plans. My parents have not had US insurance for over 30 years. you are all thinking of this rule in saying my employer insurance should be primary:

    (i) Subject to (a)(ii) of this subsection, the plan that covers the person other than as a dependent, for example as an employee, member, subscriber, policyholder or retiree, is the primary plan and the plan that covers the person as a dependent is the secondary plan

But it doesnt apply since I dont have a dependant plan. As such, I revert to the last rule stating that if no prior rules apply, use age of coverage.

BUT IF I AM WRONG, please tell me what to tellcarefirst. They told me this. the goal is to tellme how to convince carefirst, not to convince me of anything

2013 Subaru stolen then recovered - things to watch for?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:30 PM PST

My wife's 2013 Subaru was stolen out of the driveway; it was left unlocked we believe, but no keys were left in the vehicle (we have both sets). It was recovered by the police about a week later. It didn't seem to be hotwired, at least visibly, but had some minor damage.

The insurance company is having repairs done which is good. We're a bit concerned about how it was stolen, however, and the insurance company seems nonchalant about it.

I feel it should be rekeyed at the least, but is there anything else that needs to be done?

Auto claim under investigation by insurance company. Is this procedure normal?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:57 PM PST

My car was hit in a parking lot. Same day I filed a claim online. I thought it would be solved, but my claim was referred to the investigation unit and I have been jumping through hoops for the last 3 weeks - I've had to miss 2 days of work so far, which has made me frustrated with this process. Here are all the things I have completed so far:

    1. Filed a claim online
    2. Brought car to an appraiser for pictures
    3. Had a phone recorded statement
    4. Had phone calls with the investigation unit - constant back and forth as they say I should have an answer Wednesday, but I don't hear anything until Friday (only after I called them).
    5. Had an investigator (accident reconstructionist?) come view my car and submit a report to my insurance company. They told me I should have an answer at this point, and again, no answer.

Now, they want to have a road adjuster come out and do a recorded interview in person, which would force me to miss another day of work (I asked to do it over the phone so I would not have to take off, but they rejected this idea as it is "company policy"). This is incredibly frustrating as I have very few PTO days and work 2 jobs. I ask when we will have a resolution, but I only get a vague "it's under investigation" answer.

Is this normal? I am really just looking for any insight. My insurance company is turning this into a nightmare. My damage estimate is $3000 with a $1000 deductible, so it is not as if the car was totaled. Any advice?

    Negoigate total loss settlement offer

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 04:02 PM PST

Adjuster declared total loss on my car and gave me a settlement offer. The full disclosure for the car price has compareable car features and their list price from Auto trader. There is a -1000$ adjustment for condition vs comps. Comps are from Auto trader which means the adjuster checked the comp pics online.

So, what's the best way to approach my insurance/adjuster to reconsider/negogiate the -1000$ condition adjustment.

I recently got brand new tires in Novemeber 2018 and there is no other physical damage on the car before the accident.

I found few cars on CarMax and Edmunds that have higher base value then the one's used in the report. Can I suggest them as reference?

What points\things I can bring to their notice to get better settlement offer.

I can't find any reasonable car insurance quotes (UK)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 03:24 PM PST

I'm a 25 year old male from the United Kingdom, I got my licence last month. The cheapest insurance I can get is over £2000 on a 1.2l car (Vauxhall Corsa). Surely that's too high?

    reassurance with Auto Claim

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:24 AM PST

Hello so yesterday I was in an accident where a car used his turn signal at the last minute and rammed into me, damaging my car pretty bad. He was a very polite young man (19) and was respectful the whole way. I asked him to put in a claim with his insurance truthfully since lying wouldn't get him anywhere since Adjusters do this for a living.

Fast Forward today, he called his insurance, Geico, and mine, Allstate before I was able to call mine, Claiming that i hit his passenger side. The adjusters don't work until Monday so I'll have to wait to call. I'm a 21 year oldcollege student with no previous car accidents who really can't afford a higher insurance or paying anything for the damages. Anyone can give me an opinion just so I can have a peace of mind. https://imgur.com/a/9HaCsLG/

His car is the Ford Fusion and mine is the Corolla.

Home Insurance, Discount for private security?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 01:20 PM PST

My parents have a vacation home. While visiting I got to thinking, their HOA hires a private security firm to patrol the neighborhood in a marked vehicle 24/7. I asked my parents about it and they like him and they are an emergency contact number for the house security alarm and fire alarm system.

What kind of homr insurance discount, if any, could they expect from a service like this? As far as they know their insurance company doesnt know they have 24/7 patrol in their neighborhood of about ~100 houses

    Is Medicaid decent coverage?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 12:27 PM PST

So, I'll be turning 26 soon. I'm trying to get an extension on my insurance as I have a disability (moderate to severe OCD) that has kept me from earning a decent income. I'm not sure if I would have to pay a large premium for this though.

There's also the age 29 law in New York state, but again I might have to pay a large premium.

So I may have to take Medicaid. I'm just wondering if Medicaid covers therapy? Like, if I need to go to a specialist for my OCD, I assume I'd just have to pay out of pocket?

    Feel asleep while driving

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:41 AM PST

First off, I got into an accident about 3 weeks ago, no real damage done to the car accept for the front passenger side, fender got scratched up too. Yesterday, my dumbass fell asleep driving and I crashed into a little ditch of some short. Nothing happened to the exterior of the car other than I got s flat tire. But my airbags went out, I sure I have to replace them now but my car is due for the shop on Tuesday. Can I have them replace my car bag while it's there?

I already know I have to tell my insurance but I don't want to tell them if I don't have to. Edit: I know I'd have to tell them if I can get it fixed but is there a way to work around it?

Rear ended minor damage should i report

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 11:32 AM PST

Was rear ended yesterday, guy was pretty rude, threatened to get a lawyer if I filed a claim, damage is very minor but I was hit on the freeway, so we're moving fairly fast.

My Car was involved in a hit and run while parked the week before, didn't file a claim for that since all I have is liability. Considered reporting and using settlement to help cover the cost of the more major damage, but feels a bit unethical. Opinions?

    Office equipment insurance policy

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 05:13 AM PST

    Hi guys,

I own a small business (healthcare practice) and we have some expensive items ($10,000 x-ray sensor, $20,000 scanner, etc..) that are easily breakable and I am curious if there are any options for insurance that are not OEM (for instance, the scanner company offers insurance for $1500/year)...I was thinking there has to be a cheaper option.

    Thanks

NJ subrogation from accident 4 years ago.

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 10:56 AM PST

Has anyone had experience with Conduent? They have contacted me regarding a car accident I was in almost four years ago. They are calling on behalf on my health insurance bcbs nj for subrogation. The lady hit me and was at fault. She sprained my ankle and back. Since NJ is no fault, my auto insurance USAA paid all of my medical bills...which was only like $3000. The lady at conduent said they believe a doctor at the ER double billed. I had bcbs send me all of the claims and EOBs from the accident and shows they paid $0. They want me to sign a paper granting them access to my medical records, which doesn't sound right? Why would they need my medical records for a billing issue?

Also there was no lawsuit...no settlement. No attorney. Literally went to an ER and ortho. Treated and called it a day. I have every statement of payment and correspondence from USAA. Also from her insurance Allstate, which paid me for missing 2 days at work.

I just spoke to USAA and they want me to talk to an injury adjuster on Monday.

Should I look for local insurances or big name companies?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2019 09:58 AM PST

Hey all so a little background on me, I'm 30 year old male driver in NYC with 0 accidents or tickets in my 10 year history. I'm currently driving a 2018 Q50 and had geico initially paying 198$ a month, just switched to progressive and I'm paying 148$ for the same coverage(also have snapshot running trying to get a bigger % off).

Now I've read online that shopping around at local insurers might be my best bet at this point in my life. I've also read that snapshot might give a good discount but they also raise the premiums afterwards to offset it, any knowledge about that?

Thanks in advance for the help!
