What sort of software do investment firms use? Posted: 24 Feb 2019 03:03 AM PST I often see in movies where everyone's computers look like dark backgrounds with a bunch of graphs and tables and whatnot running through them e.g this picture. Obviously there's a good chance this is just made up design for the movie to look interesting, but what sort of software would a big investment firm use? [link] [comments] |
Some Analysis of S&P Since 1950 Posted: 23 Feb 2019 01:55 PM PST Hi r/investing! Long time lurker, but first time poster. I have been doing analysis of S&P 500 returns out of my own curiosity, and thought I would share in case some of you found this interesting. The basic question is this: how have annualized returns of S&P changed since 1950? In other words, how sensitive are my returns to the time of initial investment? I pulled monthly S&P 500 data and ran the numbers. Here are the results in chart form: https://imgur.com/rMGWtvo. The number on the y-axis tells me my "average return percentage", year over year, had I invested my money that given month. On average, you would have made about 7.54% per year. I also created a histogram to easier visualized historic results here: https://imgur.com/HytXCxX. The distribution, as you can tell, is not "normal" at all. My next step was to take inflation into account and see what that would do to my returns. As you would expect, annualized returns will now be significantly lower. You can see this for yourself here: https://imgur.com/yuOukjR. Histogram for these results is here: https://imgur.com/xaSHuKi. Lastly, what would these numbers look like in terms of actual dollars? Say I put in 100 dollars at that given annualized rate, how much would I have after 30 years? On average, your 100 dollars would grow to almost 1000 dollars, and at most you would have had almost 5500 dollars. Not bad! Here is the chart: https://imgur.com/WoJRfJY Anyways, let me know if you found this interesting or if you would like to see the underlying data. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Feb 2019 03:18 PM PST Despite HOG's recognition and identification of the issues at hand, I believe the execution of its new strategy is fatally flawed, despite certainly being an improvement at a higher-level. As a result, I think shares should re-rate significantly to the downside in the coming months, and potentially permanently given HOG's current dependence on share repurchases, high leverage of 6.2x, credit risk from its lending segment, a 2018 dividend payout ratio of 46.33%, and for the first time ever, an-almost negative quarterly net income print of $0.5M in 4Q18. Keep in mind, this is all in the backdrop of what is arguably the 8th + inning of the bull market and economic cycle, and HOG saw no mercy during the last recession, bottoming out at 4.41x forward TEV/EBITDA in November of 2008 with net debt to LTM EBITDA of only 2.8x. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |

Index Funds in a Taxable account? Posted: 23 Feb 2019 04:54 PM PST So I have read countless posts from people saying they would not put Index Funds into a taxable account and would put ETFs instead because of tax efficiency. Would having FZROX, VTSAX, etc. Be that much of a difference in the long run compared to let's say VTI? Would the difference be in the hundreds? Thousands? Tens? I am confused on the tax efficiency part I guess and would better understand if someone put it in a hypothetical situation for me. Thank you so much [link] [comments] |
Investing a lot at once or investing a little periodically? Posted: 23 Feb 2019 06:10 PM PST I've heard of the adage: Time in the market beats timing the market. So suppose I have $5200 available to invest, would it be more sensible to invest it all in one day, or, say, invest $100 per week for a year? I've also read about dollar cost averaging, and I get that the periodic strategy supports that, but I don't know if it beats investing a lot at once. Especially if I can still invest a smaller amount periodically in addition to a one day investment of $5200. [link] [comments] |

Here are the stocks Warren Buffett says he's betting on for the long run Posted: 23 Feb 2019 08:07 AM PST Warren Buffett says he and Charlie Munger, Berkshire's vice chairman, don't view these holdings "as a collection of ticker symbols – a financial dalliance to be terminated because of downgrades by 'the Street,' expected Federal Reserve actions, possible political developments, forecasts by economists or whatever else might be the subject du jour." They rather see "an assembly of companies that we partly own and that, on a weighted basis, are earning about 20% on the net tangible equity capital required to run their businesses." Buffett: With BV gone, do we need to rethink Shareholders' Equity in valuation? Posted: 23 Feb 2019 10:14 PM PST Just trying to grasp the impact of the new accounting rule in approaching business valuation. For those who aren't certain what I mean; in some valuation methods, the Equity growth rate is used as a proxy to gauge the future growth. So in a way future growth is tight back to BV growth. Need advice on starting Roth IRA index fund Posted: 23 Feb 2019 08:17 PM PST Let me start by saying I am new to investing and this sub, so I am not sure if this post breaks rule 2. If it does let me know and I will post it in the daily question thread. I just finished reading John Bogle's book "Common Sense Investing" and want to start saving for retirement using a Roth IRA through Vanguard. Having bought into Bogle's strategy for long-term investing, I plan to invest 100% in a stock index fund early on and eventually transition to a more balanced index stock/bond portfolio. However, I have a few questions about which index fund to purchase. I am interested in 6 index-funds (VFIAX, VFINX, VOO, VTSAX, VTSMX, VTI) on Vanguard, but I am not sure which one to invest in. I know VFINX and VTSMX have higher expense ratios and are no longer open to new investors. That leaves 2 S&P500 indexes (VFIAX and VOO) and 2 total market indexes (VTSAX and VTI). Important things to consider: I plan to use a Roth IRA, I can make the minimum investment needed for all 4 indexes; I am not going to be a day trader. 1) What are the pros/cons of investing in an S&P500 vs total market index? 2) What are the pros/cons of investing in a traditional mutual fund vs. ETF? 3) I have read that ETFs are more tax-efficient. How so? 4) Which index fund would you recommended for me? Currently I am leaning towards investing in VFIAX. 5) Somewhat related. Over time how do changes in the expense-ratio effect investors? If I buy at 0.04 and let's say in 30 years the expense-ratio increases to 0.50, at that time will it cost me 0.04 or 0.50? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
