    Italy Falls Into Recession

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:52 AM PST

Germany is not far from recession, growth in the EU is weak and China is slowing down. I have to say that I'm pessimistic and don't really understand the joyfulness shared on this sub.

    Dividend Exploitation

New investor here. Sorry if this is obvious, but what's to stop me from buying dividend stocks on the day they pay dividends or the day before or whatever, and selling the day after in order to do it again with a different company?

    Best way to get started.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:17 AM PST

I'm looking to invest a small amount, a drop in the bucket. What I want is to learn by doing how to invest larger amounts. What is the best way to start. I want medium time returns, nothing major but a solid nest egg. I want to set the money up to reinvest itself unless I need it, I was thinking a mutual fund. Any advice or resources appreciated! Thanks :-)

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 01 Feb 2019 04:04 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

    Looking for stock API

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:57 PM PST

I've been investing for about ½ year and it has become one of my main interests since. Now i would like to combine it with another interest of mine, softwaredevelopment. I would like to create a website where you can look up different stocks and get recommendations based on TA. Simple, i know...been done before, i know. Before i begin development, i would like to ask you guys the following:

    1. I need an API to supply data. i have the following requirements:
    • Unlimited calls.
    • Free of charge (or cheap).
    • Should supply data for as many markets as possible, but to a bare minimum of Sweden, Denmark, US and Canada.
    • Must supply financial data about the companies. The more the better.
    • Should have more than a few years worth of data. 5 years would be optimal. The more the better.
    • I read that 15min delay is common and thats fine by me.
    1. Do you know of any good chart-creating libraries? Atm i've decided to use SVG charts but i'm open to any suggestions.

    2. Do you know of any math libraries for this purpose? I'm using .NET/C#

    3. I'm looking for a cheat sheet... This has been done before but i have the impression that all the 'good' ones are hidden behind a pay-wall. Do you know of any free websites that does what i want my website to do?

    4. I'm kinda new to investing and my knowledge about TA is... Well... i dont know anything about it! Do you know of any resources i can use to learn more (books, webpages etc.)?

I like investing. I like programming. I like Math. This project sounds exciting to me, but i want to use it to learn as well. Based on my TA-recommendations i would like to gather data about how well they perform and from that, maybe improve the recommendations and my own investments.

If you think i forgot anything or you simply have something to add, please do not hesitate to comment :)

    Thanks for your time!!

Intrinsic Valuation (DCF) and Margin of Safety

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:25 PM PST

I have been using a DCF approach to estimate intrinsic value using various growth rate so that I can better manage my risks. The method I have been using is a simple DCF using FCF (as taught here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHnEU6ZZ0QE). Using a rate of return of 10% and a margin of safety between 25% and 50%, I find literally no entry point to any of the stocks I am reviewing. In fact, in 90% of them, I don't see how the stock would ever get to the levels I am calculating even with a recession. So being at loss, I wonder:

    1. Do I need a more complex DCF method? If so, which one should I look at?
    2. Is my margin of safety too high?
    3. Do I need to move away from popular stocks (i.e: AAPL) to find better valuation deals? On that one, I am not so comfortable as I try to keep the stocks I am interested in relatively small and where I feel I understand in the sector either because I studied it or work in it.
    4. How can I cross validate my calculations to say others? are analyst price targets usually good estimates?

S&P 500 Posts Its Best January in 30 Years (Bloomberg)

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 09:00 PM PST

The S&P 500 Index just capped its best January in 30 years. U.S. stocks rallied on Thursday on the back of stronger-than-expected corporate earnings and a dovish Federal Reserve to post a 7.9 percent advance for the month. That was better than the 7.1 percent gain in 1989, when George H. W. Bush came into office and transit fares in New York City rose to $1.15 from $1.00.

ALk down after positive earnings report

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 11:11 PM PST

Hey I'm just curious if anyone has any idea why Alaska Air Group $ALK price has dropped sense their earnings announcement. They beat on earnings and revenue. The only thing I can think of is that earnings and revenue were lower then the previous quarter and that the shutdown was effecting airlines heavily. But I'd figure all those factors would have been priced in. Any thoughts?

What would be a good strategy for alternative investment areas other than equities? I know the general consensus is that time in the market beats timing the market, however, a lot of people are thinking that there is going to be an impending market downturn so what would you suggest?

Offered preferred seed investment round at my company, still a contractor, what do I do?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 10:21 PM PST

I work for a start up which is doing a small preferred seed investment round. I don't yet know the terms, etc. I believe in the company and want to put a chunk of money in while they are in this early stage. I'm still a contractor, hopefully will be hired soon, and would likely receive common stock if that happens. What do I need to know / ask before investing? Or should I just wait to receive stock as an employee? Or take stock in lieu of some payments owed? Thanks for your help!

How do investors get reimbursed for volatility in a stock?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2019 05:08 PM PST

If FB is more volatile than GM, investors theoretically require a higher return on FB to compensate them for that. How do they actually receive that extra return? Where does it come from?
