UPDATE: I’m the girl who recently travelled to India and was worried about arranged marriage - I’m fine!

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:49 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

First off, thanks so much for all of your concern. I was really struggling with this as a looming event in my future and after reading your advice I became really worried I was going to be married off during this trip to India. However I just got back, about an hour ago, and I am 100% fine, apart from a nightmare I had about arranged marriage while in India. As you can tell, I'm pretty stressed about it, whether it was going to happen this year, next year or in five years.

As I said, I got back recently and I'm doing fine, nothing was out of the ordinary, we even bought a few books as my dad promised.

Thanks again everyone! I may post again here in the future if I need any more legal help but for now this is it. I know I don't want an arranged marriage so when the time comes I am pretty sure calling Shakti will be the way I'll go. Thank you for giving me the confidence to make this decision.

    :)

Am I liable if my ex kills herself

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 06:36 AM PST

I found out my now ex had been cheating on me recently and had been dating a guy for over 2 months, when I found out she begged me not to tell the other guy as I'd be ruining her life and she'll kill herself if I did it. I went ahead and did it anyways not to cause her harm, but because A) I wanted to know the story from the other guy and B) I knew she would lie about everything so it was no bother asking her any of the questions.

I'm not too sure how serious she was with the killing herself comment, I don't think she was serious and was more of a spur of the moment thing to try and stop me. She hasn't been active or seen on any social media since the incident, and I know she's alive but in the off chance anything happens, would I be held liable? I didn't do any of this out of maliciousness to hurt her intentionally it was just a messy break up.

    Airport confiscated insulin

    Posted: 29 Jan 2019 04:39 PM PST

My diabetic (t1) mother flew from Michigan to Florida today with a connecting flight in Philadelphia. She has been having a lupus flare up, so I arranged for a wheelchair for her weeks ago to take her to her gates/baggage claim. I also confirmed that she could bring a medical bag with get insulin and medication. When she landed in Philadelphia, they said they didn't have a chair for her so she had to walk across multiple terminals to get to her gate. When she was boarding the plane, the ticketing agent told her she couldn't bring the medical bag on board (basically an insulated lunch box). She explained it had insulin in it which she needs to have with her. They told her she could check it or she could stay in Philadelphia, but she couldn't bring it on board. She surrended the bag, boarded the plane super upset. When she landed in Tampa, the wheelchair guy was waiting for her. He took her to baggage claim and I guess her medical bag was lost. She is now in Florida with no insulin, no medication. Her doctors are working with her insurance to get authorization for her get enough to hold her over.

I am beyond upset. I have called AA and they confirmed that insulin is allowed on board. What legal ramifications are there for this?

Ohio, Dr. flagged my medical records with anxiety because she doesn't think my neurologist is treating a real disease

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:28 AM PST

I've been in treatment with Cleveland clinic for a little over 2 years for a disorder of my autonomic nervous system. I've had that diagnosis confirmed by Cleveland clinic neurology, cardiology, and endocrinology. I was traveling there for care when I lived in North Carolina, so that diagnosis was also confirmed by University of North Carolina cardiology as well as my primary care doctor.

I've recently moved back to my hometown because, as you can guess from that list of doctors, my health was a little bit of a mess and I wanted to be close to my family. My hometown is Columbus and not Cleveland. I assumed it would be fine since Columbus has several large health systems, but unfortunately I have run into some pretty strange problems here. the doctors here do not think this is a real disease for whatever reason, and have marked my medical records with anxiety. My doctor at Cleveland Clinic was concerned enough from all the new anxiety notes that he actually had me psychiatrically evaluated and the psychiatrist said I don't have anxiety.

I have attempted to discuss this with my new primary care doctor and she said that she thinks that my disease is just the biology of anxiety and they're the same thing. I attempted to work with a patient advocate at the health system and I attempted to give him letters and documentation from my neurologist explaining what I have been diagnosed with and why it is not anxiety. The patient advocate told me he is not a medical person and handed the stack of records back to me. he told me to go to the medical records department myself to correct my records and I attempted to do so but they have ignored me since I filed my paperwork.

An unfortunate result of my health is that I occasionally require a trip to the emergency room. Since my chart now says anxiety the doctors at the emergency room stop looking for other symptoms and treat me for anxiety. They have decided that since I have several emergency room trips related to anxiety that they are going to commit me if I turn up the emergency room again. Again, I've been psychiatrically evaluated and I don't have anxiety. however I am having extreme difficulty convincing the doctors of this because they have multiple records that having anxiety written on them. Convincing them that multiple records are simply wrong is surprisingly difficult. convincing them to look at my records at Cleveland clinic has also been difficult because apparently many of them are not trained in how to do this. I have medical records that literally say that there is no record of the disease I was diagnosed with which is infuriating because I know that these record systems talk to each other, since my doctor in Cleveland can see the records from here.

I have attempted to go to the medical records department and have my records corrected. I've provided documentation from my neurologist and explanations of how the disease works. Unfortunately they are ignoring my request for status updates and I don't know what has happened with those requests. given my track record with this health system I am not assuming the best.

This becomes even more concerning given that now that everyone has moved to an electronic medical record system the incorrect records will propagate. Even if I switch hospital systems and attempt to never use this one again, the new doctors are going to be predisposed to simply dismissing me as an anxiety patient because of all of the anxiety flags.

The health system in question owns the emergency room closest to where I live as well as where I am taking classes. I am concerned that if I need emergency medical care and I am not conscious, or I'm having trouble communicating, which sometimes happens, that I'm going to once again be referred to a psychiatric ward for an established neurological issue and at this point I may possibly be committed, again over an established medical issue with two years of treatment history. I really need to get this fixed and I haven't been able to get my records corrected.

What on Earth do I do?

Church I work at payed me minimum wage for several years while requiring me to give 10% back and volunteer with at least one church-related side project.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:51 AM PST

Essentially, it seems to me like I was scammed by getting paid less than minimum wage, as I was paid the $8.10/hr (Florida Minimum Wage) and after taxes, the total amount made must be tithed on which means that I literally just turn around and give 10% of it back, with no benefits to me.

To a lesser extent, I'm wondering about the forced volunteering. The way they keep track of this is a Google Form that people fill out every Monday and each employee has to check a box to say what external volunteer stuff they do.

If you don't tithe or volunteer free hours for a couple weeks, you get a letter with your paycheck and tells you they are concerned about your connection with God, or something.

I'm aware it's unethical, stupid, and a bad business practice. What I want to know is, if the church ever pushes me to sue for any reason, is this a legal problem that I could pursue?

Landlord moved me from one apartment to another without my consent. [CO]

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 09:20 AM PST

    Context:

I currently rent an apartment in Colorado Springs where I was attending university. I dropped out of university this year to accept a job offer in a new state but was forced to continue with my lease as the apartment complex I rent from does not allow residents to break their leases for any reason.

I was renting a top-floor room with a balcony, as if I lived there I wanted to avoid the noise from overhead neighbors. The apartment was also very close to my university and made for easy commutes. The aforementioned reasons made my room and location very desirable to new residents.

When I visited Colorado Springs in December I went to visit the apartment and verify that everything was in working order. While I was there, I inquired about the possibility of breaking my lease or subletting and was told I could not break my lease, and the apartment would only assist me in subletting if the rest of their apartments were full.

The landlord did offer me the opportunity to relocate to a new apartment but I declined, stating that if someone else wanted to live in my apartment, they should simply take over my lease rather than me transferring apartments. The difference in monthly rent payments is negligible and I see no reason to surrender an apartment if I'm still going to be paying rent in a city where I no longer live.

    The Situation:

Today I logged into my portal to discover that I had actually been relocated from one apartment to another without my consent, and that the room I was renting was no longer mine. This baffled me.

The landlord had called me twice and texted me once two weeks prior to let me know that he could, again, transfer me from one apartment to another to lower my monthly payment. I didn't answer either phone call or respond to the text. I thought that I was in the clear.

Today I found that I had been moved from the top floor of my apartment complex to the bottom. While I am saving money, I am still on a lease I don't use in a state I do not reside in.

    The Legalese:

    Relevant lease text for relocation:

Relocation: For purposes of operating efficiency, Landlord reserves the right, upon five (5) days' advance written notice to relocate Resident to another Apartment at the Community. Furthermore, Landlord retains the right to assign Resident to other units in the Apartment. Landlord, to the extent practical and in Landlord's sole discretion, will honor Resident's requests for the sharing of a particular Apartment. Resident may request relocation to another Apartment in the Community by providing thirty (30) days' written notice to Landlord of the desire to relocate. Landlord, in its sole discretion, may allow or refuse such relocation. If Landlord allows Resident to relocate, prior to such relocation, Resident shall pay Landlord a $300.00 relocation fee in order to compensate Landlord for the costs associated with such relocation, and Resident shall be responsible for all costs associated with switching Utilities and Services to the new Apartment. All such costs shall be considered as Additional Rent.

    My Questions:

    • The phrase "For the purpose of operating efficiency" is especially interesting here. I'm curious what reason for moving a resident falls under "operating efficiency" and how that's defined legally.

    • I was never notified with 5 days written notice unless it was delivered to the apartment I don't live in. The landlord was aware that I did not live there, as I had told him in December.

Thanks for any insight you offer.

    EDIT

I did some digging through my portal and found that I had received a $71 credit sometime in January. I dug through my balance history and found that I had received it on January 3rd, one day after my landlord contacted me to let me know he had someone who wanted my apartment.

This would mean that he would have needed to file written notice on December 30th to relocate me on January 3rd. Since I had heard nothing about this relocation prior to January 2nd, I don't believe he did that.

Employer switched me from a W2 to a 1099 without telling me, kept my take home pay the same rate.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:18 AM PST

I work at a weird, small company that has had a few change-overs in management.

I've received a W2 for the past few years with no issues and have consistently been referred to as a full-time employee. I'm told where to work from, have a set schedule and use the tools the company provides.

About two years ago, I stopped receiving pay stubs and started just receiving checks, which was annoying, but fine. My take home pay remained consistent and I got a W2 last year. No issues.

    But then this:

I received a 1099 for 2018 instead of my usual W2. The 1099 also overstates how much I actually received in take-home throughout the year by a few thousand.

I wasn't told that I was being switched from full-time to contractor. There was also no discussion about changes to my salary. My duties have largely stayed the same.

I assumed that since my take-home pay stayed the same, taxes were just being deducted, but now it looks like I'm screwed.

Has this happened to anyone else? What do I do here, sans looking for a new job. I can't afford an attorney.

My cousin's parents refuse to get her medical treatment because they're into Homeopathy

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:47 AM PST

She has severe hairloss. They're trying to get her to take more vitamins, but she won't take them anymore because they gave her sideffects.

The vitamins did work at first to help her hair grow, but she told me they never got rid of the bald spots, so the truth was that her other hair just grew over them. But her parents think that she'd have more progress if she just took more pills.

Her parents say now that she's making her hair worse, and that she's causing her own hair issue. They're not willing to get her actual medical treatment at all. She's devastated and thinks everything is her fault.

I looked at the vitamins she took, and the dosages are really high. She was taking B complex and it turned her urine yellow and made her feel really dizzy. The lowest vitamin on there was 3000% of the DV. It's no wonder she felt so bad.

She's only 17, so she can't go to the doctor by herself. The people she lives with are the step dad and mom, so I was thinking about telling her real dad about this. Does this count as child abuse?

What can I do? We live in Maine, USA. My cousin had been raised in homeopathy, so I'm not sure if she'd even go to a doctor willingly, not if we risked her parents finding out. But I know she really wants to do something about her hair. I think she mostly is scared of the backlash from her parents.

I purchased wood working plans from someone. They claim I cannot sell the thing I've made using their plans. I don't understand how copyrights work in this situation.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 05:40 AM PST

We're both in the US. The seller of the plans in is Hawaii and I am in Indiana. On the site where you purchase the plans, it states, "I do not grant my permission for use of my designs for commercial or institutional use; you may not sell works made from my plans for profit."

The work I made is loosely based on the plans I purchased, and not an exact copy of the plans.

To be honest, I actually don't want to sell what I've made with the plans, but enough people have asked that I thought it an interesting question.

TN - FIL bought an iPhone XS from AT&T’s online store. Now they’re accusing him of stealing it.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 08:18 AM PST

He bought the phone last week. When he received it in the mail and tried to activate it, it locked up so he called customer service to see what was going on. They accused him of stealing the phone, and he was hung up on by multiple customer service reps. He also went to a few local stores to try and resolve the issue but no one was able to help him, and they're still treating him like he stole the phone.

I also reached out to AT&T on Twitter yesterday and they said they were looking into it, but they still haven't gotten back to me. They are telling him he still has to pay for the phone (over $1000) despite mailing it back. We also have proof (the tracking info) that it was mailed back.

What are his options here? Are there any organizations he can contact or make a complaint with besides AT&T because they're clearly not interested in helping resolve this. Should he contact a lawyer? Thanks for any advice and I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this, I'm just trying to exhaust all options here.

Edit: one customer service rep admitted Saturday to him that they messed up, but that she didn't feel the need to correct the situation. He also contacted Apple support to get them to help, they contacted AT&T with my FIL on the line and the AT&T rep hung up on them.

Ex wants me to pay for extracurricular activities and private school, but did not discuss with me first?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:26 AM PST

    Georgia, USA.

(On wife's account since I don't have one).

Long story short, my ex and I have joint legal custody of my 4 year old daughter. As stated by the order, we are required to make joint decisions on extracurricular activities. I live across the country so my contact is heavily based on what my ex decides to tell me and what she doesn't.

My ex has signed my daughter up for gymnastics, tap, ballet, soccer, and private school. She's 4 years old....

The cost per month is well over my child support payment. She and her attorney are asking I pay for these activities, as my ex has no job (by choice), but I was NEVER informed about them ahead of time. She was already signed up when my ex told me about them. There was never a discussion, as required by the order. My ex does not tell me anything about these activities because she will mostly only talk to me through our attorneys (and my attorney is far too busy to be responding to small emails as such. I also do not want to waste my retainer on stuff like this when my ex can just text me).

What are the chances a judge will make me pay for these?

She violated the order by not discussing them with me. The tuition is well over my child support payment, so I'm not sure how she is even getting the money for it. We have no court date yet. Currently going through discovery and interrogatories.

I realize nobody can predict what a judge will say, but there are some pretty experienced people on this sub that may have seen some patterns or outcomes. Or have some advice based on their personal experience.

Isn't child support supposed to cover these types of things? It is not my fault if my ex feels like a 4 year old needs to be signed up for 5 different expensive activities. I was never included in the decision-making.

Edit: adding that there's nothing in the order about splitting the cost for extracurricular activities. We are going back to court for modification, Ex and her will try to get this added, after she has signed up for all these activities without discussion.

Uncle's estranged partner is trying to gain next of kin status and control his estate against my familys wishes USA,PA

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:56 AM PST

This past October my uncle passed away. His estranged partner who he lived with for 10+ years made it clear to everyone In my family that she wanted nothing to do with him just before he passed. My grandmother is considered next of kin and so she controlls his estate, but last week we got paperwork saying that his estranged partner is claiming that they were common law married and so she should control the estate. Now from what we understand we have to hire a lawyer to fight this claim. We dont really have money to hire a lawyer so we dont know what to do. I figured I could get some advice on the whole situation here as none of us know how to go forward. I'm happy to give more details as necessary in the comments.

    tattoo artist stealing artwork

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:13 AM PST

    TLDR at bottom

Here's a story: a few years back I got a tattoo from a reputable tattoo artist in NYC, high in demand, and quite costly. As an artist, I showed some of my artwork during our session. Within a few weeks, my art started appearing in the tattoos he was giving to his clients. I spoke to him, stating that he was clearly tracing my artwork and putting it on his clients as his own. He claims to be "inspired" by the artwork, and that artists should give their art to people for free. We ended up settling this part, verbally stating he would not use my artwork again. Fast forward a few years, to today, and he does it again. Now claiming that the client came to him with my artwork, also being a bit of an asshole in response, telling me to not contact him. I find this hard to believe based on our history, but even more difficult to prove. I don't know what to do. Ethically, I am not one to pursue legal action, but I'm pissed and need advice. Thank you!

EDIT - I want to be clear that I have no problem of people receiving tattoos of my artwork. In this case, I believe the tattoo artist is using my artwork and proposing it as his own towards his clients.

TLDR: Tattoo artist is using my artwork on his clients, stating he's been inspired by them, or clients come in with my art as a reference, as they are directly traced. This started within days of showing the tattoo artist my work, and I don't believe his claims.

Non professionals doing construction at 3am, been going on for 9 months. Local authorities don’t take it seriously it seems.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 04:07 AM PST

Hey everyone. So it's pretty simple, but some guys with tools have been renovating a house since last year in April. They come in the middle of the night and start hammering and sawing away. Leave their trucks in the middle of the road and alley. Have made a habit out of starting well before 7am on random days, and working well last 9pm on other random days.

I've gotten a lot of different answers from law enforcement here. First I was told they couldn't do anything unless they actually saw the guys there doing the deed, which I was difficult and still is, because they will turn off their lights and hide. Now they even work in pitch dark so it's harder for them to be spotted. It's pretty ridiculous.

Then I was told there isn't anything they can do except earn them. Not even a ticket or a citation, which I have read is a thing that can be fine in my county for this. My landlord on my behalf has complained to the city, but not much has come from that. They're outside right now pounding shit like it's 3pm, instead of 3:59 am.

My next course of action is to call code enforcement. My landlords have a hunch that these guys don't have permits and that's why they're being Susie shady about what times they do work on the property. The property before then was completely abandoned and the house was empty for years. It got bought last year and that's when this stuff started.

I don't know what else to do besides that.m, though. I've documented as much as I can with video and logging, since this stuff started in April if 2018.

The most frustrating part is that the police definitely have warned them that they there have been numerous complaints and they can't be there past 9pm. But they keep doing this. Despite being warned by police. And on top of it, the hiding in the dark. There's honestly no better word for this other then childish. They hear a car coming and they turn everything off and hide either inside the house or in the garage that's in the alley. They definitely know they're being assholes and aren't supposed to be here in the middle of the night.

I'm not sure what else I can do though.

Oh and I almost forgot. They accidentally cut a telephone line when they were doing shit in the trees last month. It's just a wire now hanging in the alley. I have a picture of that, too. I honestly don't know how they aren't in trouble for that alone, already.

My boss won’t send my W2

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 07:39 AM PST

Actually she's my previous boss, as I worked at the place September-December. I could not get a W4 to fill out until the literal last day I worked there (I also requested my pay stubs and she said they weren't necessary so didn't give them to me?), and I'm in college so I requested her to send it to my family's address so they could send it to our accountant. She said ok. On Jan 14, she texts me a picture of my W2 and asks if she can email it to me. It'd be hassle to have to print it out but I said if she had the PDF, sure, anyway. Yesterday, she asked if I received the email. I haven't. So she says to check it again because she sent it again. Still nothing. I give her another email to send it to. Still nothing. What can I do? I am so utterly frustrated with her at this point.

    Edit: in NYC btw

Daughters mom is dating a man who, at 14, was caught with a 6 year old girl, served four years.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 02:12 AM PST

So a few weeks ago my ex, my daughters mother, told me the anonymous message I had received informing me that her current boyfriend (on/off two years) is currently a registered sex offender was true.

She told me she wasn't going to tell me, and that she has met with lawyers and been a part of his therapy and assured me he was not breaking any terms of probation/sex offender registration, and made it seem like he was just a confused kid and did something weird or creepy and it was all a huge misunderstanding, and that his mom basically lied to get him in trouble to spite his father in a custody battle.

About a week later I seek some clarity. I flat out ask how old the other person was. Six years old.

Officially charged with "Sodomy", which unfortunately is a super broad spectrum of possible things. Either way, wouldn't there have to have been some evidence to support a four year sentence, therapy, and sex offender registration? She claims to not know exactly what happened but that it is all a huge misunderstanding.

I was pissed BEFORE when I thought it was two people of similar ages. Now it turns out it was a girl the same age as our daughter is right now!

What should I do? I really want to have a restraining order or something that bars him from being around my kid. But her mother says I am over reacting, and that they are going to get their own place soon. Am I powerless to stop this?

I live in Indiana, I believe he was charged in Oregon.

I plan on showing her this thread at some point.

[edit] I am located in the US

As mentioned above I was working with a local company doing real estate staging, which is a labor based job. I worked for the company for about 6 months, and there were no safety precautions when moving furniture, we were never trained, forced to work over 13 hours some days rarely with additional compensation, and our compensation was cut if we had a short day. We were wrongfully put on 1099 contracts instead of being employed, even though we did not decide how anything was to be done. I wasn't sure what to do because I needed money, and at the time it was the only source of income I had. When I was finally thinking about leaving I suffered from what was initially diagnosed as tennis elbow, and a muscle strain. The pain persisted, and I stopped working by the end of that same week. My doctor pretty much just patted me on the back, said I was "young, and would be okay" obviously that wasn't the case.

It's been about ~ 7 months since I left, and the injury is just now being properly diagnosed as a torn rotator, and I'm not sure how I can afford the taxes accrued. I think I owe less than 1000, but I would need to dig through our transactions. Is there any action I can take against the company?

Amazon charges on my account are shipped to my brother's address

    Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:31 PM PST

Over the last couple of months, some charges on my account did not make sense. I thought it was my wife making these charges since she's a frequent purchaser on Amazon, but it did not make sense. The total amount of charges has surpassed 5 thousand, and when calling the credit card company for all 4 cards that this was happening to, I found out there were various items being sent to my brother's address. I gave him my card information a long time ago to make purchases on MY account and I am guessing, he wrote it down and remembered it and made purchases with it. I froze all my accounts and called the police. Do I have a case?

Slept and fell at bosses house while on the clock. Need so advice. Located in Georgia

Recently I slipped and fell on a loose rug while working on the clock at my bosses house. It messed my back up pretty good and i was out of work for 2 weeks. When it happened my boss sent me to a chiropractor thinking this would be sufficent. Once there and an x ray was done they thought they could see a broken rip close to my lung and called an ambulance to rush me to the e.r. Once at the e.r. the did a cat scan and could see it was not broken and was probably just bruised. All together this is looking to cost me 10k+ with all the medical bills combined. My boss does not have workers comp as she only has 2 employees and filled this under her home owners insurance instead. I am unsure how to proceed from here. I am afraid to talk to her insurance adjuster as i am afaid to say the wrong thing and they refuse to cover any of this. What do i need to say or not say and what should I do from here?

I left my company a month ago and still have my computer equipment.

I live in Virginia. My former employer (in TN) supplied me with home office equipment, monitors docking station, shredder, etc, as well as a laptop and iPhone.

They said that I could expect shipping labels within 14 days. 30+ days and several reminders later, and still no labels.

At what point is it legal to assume the equipment abandoned? 90 days? 120 days? Ever?
