How do you handle having to much in your head? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 08:35 AM PST I took over a semi failing family business, I've got all these ideas but I can't seem to make progress anywhere. I need to *make new menus *Create promotional events *Set up and install Epos *Create and market online ordering system *Modernise the decor inside and out *Install new beverage system I get no help from family and if employees try to help I never really like any of their ideas (I don't blame them as it's my job not theirs). It's all so much and on top of that I have the financial worry. My main aim obviously is to bring in more custom but Imo it's a mix of decor, dated menu, lack of promotions that needs to be in place to get people in. In other words my head is a shit show and I'm struggling to get out of it. Anyone else been through a similar thing? Edit: Some absolutely amazing advice here, can't believe the reaction! I always thought because I could remember everything I needed to do I didn't need a list. I just listed one thing and ended up with half a page of smaller things that would accomplish the main task. Never even heard of trello before either. Thank you all of you! [link] [comments] |
Switching from academia to the business world, how much work do people actually do each day? Posted: 04 Jan 2019 12:41 AM PST Hey guys and gals. I hope this is the right place to ask; if not, please let me know. My question: actual time sitting at a desk engaged and working with a stopwatch tracking you ... excluding daydreaming, messaging on your phone or surfing or any distraction of any kind ... how much time on average do you spend working each day? Some background information... I'm a PhD student closing in on finishing my thesis and graduating, and I need to figure out how to adapt to the outside world before I make the jump post-graduation. The academic world I'm in is fairly siloed from the business world thanks to my supervisors and how they run the research unit. It's strange... and I've recently realised I'm not prepared as a result. I floated casually through my day with little to no structure or guidance and was getting work done very haphazardly. Not good. Anyway, I needed to shift how I was running my work-time on a daily basis and have been building in all sorts of productivity hacks and such over the past 6 months (which are really helping my thesis writing). The result is the following system: 1 - the pomodoro technique as the basis, 25mins of engaged and productive work followed by a 5min break where I stay engaged and thinking but get a little bit of blood flow and time away from the screen/page/desk. Maybe a walk to the loo or a loop around the office or just a trip to the coffee machine... but I keep thinking about the work I'm doing. This is a single unit of work-time for me. 2 - batching ... I then batch these blocks of time so that I spend at most 3 hours (6 blocks) on any one type of task. More than three hours at a time and I burnout and can't maintain it the next day, three or fewer and I can maintain daily which is important. Consistency in work output is important. I manage a couple of different types of activities successfully without them interfering, such as filing and admin, reading scientific papers, maybe one or two blocks integrating and thinking through what I know and looking for new angles, and then writing as well. (I get that the business world will also have other batches for things like meetings and communication/emails or whatever). 3 - a personalised bullet journal system I use for tracking what I do (a 'done list', as opposed to a 'to-do' list) and managing my work flow and output. From this, and my own perceptions about the business world, I set some goals for how much to do each day. I have a hard goal of 16 units per day (8 hours equivalent) and a soft goal of 20 units (10 hours equivalent). Because as I understand it an 8 hour work day is the standard and people who are willing and capable of doing more each day progress faster, earn more, and are more successful. By combining these different things, I have a structured way of making my time highly productive and focused, but no reference for how much of such time would be expected from me daily. Then, over the December period I visited my folks and got talking to my dad about this. He worked (recently retired) high up in a large corportate and it felt like a good idea to ask. He told me the company has a system for logging work-time such that everyone has 8 hours per day, with an allowance of 45min for lunch and two 15min tea breaks. The result being, a large corporate only expects 6h45m of actual work time from the employees in that department. This may be a result of labour laws in this country and not natural work hours, because the government is authoritarian on such matters. The problem is ... that's only one source of data, it's an anecdote. So I need a wider range of feedback to help refine my goals and manage expectations of how much time I should be working daily. So I come to you, the good people of reddit: actual time sitting at a desk engaged and working, with a stopwatch tracking you ... excluding daydreaming, messaging on your phone or surfing or any distraction on any kind ... how much time do you spend working each day? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:56 PM PST If you're a chiropractor (or someone that doesn't get SEO Strategy), this is a bit high level and moves the needle. After 6 months of working with a chiropractor, we noticed directories and a lot of on-page and PPC was being spent. So we wrote this blog piece over the last week and its ranking for what we want it to rank for. >>>https://webstrategyviking.com/chiropractor-seo-strategy-2019/ Its 5k words, and way beyond the limit for a post. Looking for a product/service to handle charging subscription based services Posted: 03 Jan 2019 06:31 PM PST Hi, I'm a small business owner, and I'm starting to offer monthly subscription services to clients. I'm looking for a software/product/service that can help me manage and keep track of client subscriptions, and to help automate invoicing. What I need it to do: - Automate a monthly charge to clients - Keep track of start/end date for the service. For example, if a client has signed up for 6 months of service, I would like it to stop charging after 6 months. - Some kind of notification to me (as well as client) when the subscription is about to end. If it helps, I'm currently using Freshbooks for invoicing clients. If anyone has had any experience with this problem and could help point me in the right direction to start searching would be much appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:01 PM PST I'm considering switching to RealtimePOS for my retail stores and e-commerce operations. On paper it has all the features I want and seems to be ideal for my business. My only concern is that I haven't been able to find any objective reviews or other information. Have any of you used it? Any other recommendations for a point-of-sale/CRM system. I have two brick-and-mortar stores, several Magento sites and I sell extensively on Amazon and eBay, all of which need to be integrated. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Ready to invest in redesigning my e-commerce site. Any suggestions on what to look out for? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:08 AM PST I realize this is going to be a costly venture. I had something wonderful happen today from seeds I planted in the past. Posted: 03 Jan 2019 04:06 PM PST Sorry this is going to take a bit of background, I own a radon company in Minnesota. About 6 months ago we reached out to the Minnesota lung cancer foundation, from there we were invited into a volunteer radon work group that has the Minnesota Department of Health on board, and is focus on spreading radon awareness. We proposed a project that would provide free radon systems to low income families with children who can't afford it, and our project was the first project to get accepted by the state for funding. We completed it shortly after, lowering every houses radon levels to below 1.0pCi/L (this is like perfect results on every house.) WCCO news interviewed us, and when it aired that night we were getting phone calls before the segment was even over. Skip to today, it's Radon Awareness Month, and I'm trying to get caught up so badly that I didn't even plan to market or do anything to promote our company. I got a call from WCCO, they want to do a segment on radon awareness month, want to come to my job site and film and interview me. I called my client, told him I have this opportunity, "would you mind if I have the news to your house? I will give you $100 off your system." He didn't care, we had the news out and it's going to air on prime time 6PM TV tonight... This feeling is unbelievable, getting on the news before was such a hard, long, tedious process... but that seed that I planted just regrew and sprouted again, and I didn't lift a finger. Plant seeds. [link] [comments] |
Forming an LLC, any advice in regards to registered agents? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:15 PM PST As the title implies I'm forming (or in the process of forming) a family owned LLC, and I was curious if you guys had any advice in regards to a registered agent? I'm considering being my own registered agent but worried about not being accessible during normal business days and hours along with the address listed becoming public record but also wary/unsure of choosing third-party agents. Any experience or advice is well appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Has anyone ever used 3rd party pad printing/hot stamping services? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 06:17 PM PST I'm considering a supplier for my product containers but with my relatively low quantity needs, having my logo printed by the manufacturer may not be an option. Are there third party services where I could send my containers off to be printed? I haven't had any luck looking locally. [link] [comments] |
Hey small businesses that are looking to advertise or market their services, where can I find you? Posted: 04 Jan 2019 12:04 AM PST I'm a freelance writer and I pitch ideas and strategies to small businesses. I recently started finding small businesses with glowing reviews but not a large customer base. I would pitch them how I can reach out to their past customers and write a case study that they can post on their website and share on social media. I try to explain to these businesses via email how a case study can help them (mostly it builds creditibility and it can be fun to read if you have an interesting production process). Anyway, I haven't had much luck landing clients because most of these business aren't looking for case studies to be written. And me cold emailing such businesses wastes both my time and theirs. So here's my question, is there a place where I can reach out to these businesses specifically? Perhaps a subreddit or a website? Thanks everyone! Also, if there's better subreddit for me to post this question, please let me know. Cheers! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 10:47 PM PST I have a warehouse in Los Angeles that is in a sketchier part of town and have been robbed numerous times despite all the security we put in place. We have installed security cameras and motion detectors as well as several locking devices. Each time the cameras don't pick up enough info for the police to do anything about it. Over the weekend we were robbed from the back alley. I have a feeling it's the same group of people from previous times and was thinking of letting them strike again but this time with a gps tracker in one of the boxes. Was looking at the tile device sold on amazon (link below) how ever I'm worried the area that the thief's are in no one will have the tile app for this to work. Does anyone have any ideas ? Are there small gps trackers I can place to see where these items are going next time we are robbed and catch these people?? Disregarded Multi-Member Limited Liability Company Question Posted: 03 Jan 2019 09:59 PM PST If I have a Disregarded Multi-Member Limited Liability Company where the members are only myself and an SMLLC that I am the sole member of, and if I take a tax interview for an online client which they'll use to fill out a W-9 or if I fill out a W-9 myself, then do I have to call the Disregarded Multi-Member Limited Liability Company a Disregarded Entity? Or can I give it a Federal Tax Classification of LLC with the LLC type being a Partnership, even though it is actually a disregarded entity? [link] [comments] |

Business phone service advice (getting rid of Google Voice) Posted: 03 Jan 2019 02:09 PM PST I am a small retail store that has been using Google Voice (free) for 4 years. They recently changed a feature that makes me want to drop this service immediately. The main point is that this leaves me searching for a new solution, knowing there are so many more options since the last time I looked into this. I'm hoping to crowdsource an option that will work best for me. Here's what I'm looking for: Necessary: •voicemail •record of missed calls •if calls are forwarded to personal cell phone, a way to tell if it's a business or personal call before answering Optional: •forwards calls to cell phone •voicemail transcription sent to text/email •open to landline or mobile/internet •keeping the same phone number (current number does not have my city's area code, and that's always been confusing so I'm open to changing to a local area code number) Hard No: •call screening that requires caller to say their name before you answer the phone (this is what Google changed, and it makes me very uncomfortable) Do you have a phone service that you think would be a good fit? I'm open to advice! Thank you so much! [link] [comments] |
Resources for Competition Research based on Location? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:33 PM PST I am compiling data for a business plan revolving around the residential construction industry, specifically roofing. I am trying to find out how many companies there are within my region of Washington State (zip code, or radius search). I have located the NAICS code but can't seem to find a resource to dig deeper on it. Any feedback helps. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:21 PM PST I'm the Sales Coordinator at a small private health club. I'm looking to generate revenue outside of our in-house sales. I'm thinking e-commerce and possibly even starting a drop-shipping system. I'd like to do this on a small budget to start, and scale accordingly if we grow. Pros/cons to this idea? Any difficulties that we'll encounter? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 07:01 PM PST Need to do a basic employee manual for small hospitality business. Any one have a template they have used, liked or hated? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jan 2019 05:31 PM PST I really, really don't want to go into too much detail because I am always so paranoid about someone finding out who it was that posted these things, so please do forgive and excuse my potentially over-worrying and anxieties and paranoia. Without going into too much detail:
I will add more details if I find it relevant, but those are the facts. My questions are:
So few things first. I did do as much research as I can but whether I am failing to find good, relevant information, or I am just being a complete dunce. I did take business courses in university, and now I am regretting so much for not paying better attention :'( I really want to take this opportunity because I know it will be an amazing experience for me, and the opportunity to succeed is really there. I am not acting on this out of false sense of hope or irrational optimism. I am very much a "safer than sorry" kind of guy, so I wouldn't even think about starting my own business if I didn't believe it myself. Same goes to my father whom I really trust, who has had experience starting his own business and raked in millions in net profit for years when he took some years off of being a doctor. Another thing that makes me believe that this will be a great opportunity is that the CEO really believes in me, has seen my work and the results I bring. His company is a very successful company in the country that his company is based in, and he wants to take that success overseas and expand his company through me. He is willing to invest a good fortune, although I would have to be wise in proposing what that investment would look like. I think another huge factor is that I sincerely believe his company and the people who work for him and the products that they bring to the table. If I didn't, how can I bring their product to this foreign market? So I guess I just am not sure how I can begin preparing for a business proposal meeting. I know I should do a feasibility study, and I have a good idea of how I can do that, but surely feasibility study cannot be the only thing to bring to a business proposal meeting... Please help a brother out. I have never been so passionate about an opportunity, and have never been so excited to see where this could go. Thank you everyone, and please, do provide me with any harsh reality if it will help me see things better and understand things better about all this. Cheers! edit: formatting [link] [comments] |
How do you expand a small business and make it more modern? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 04:44 PM PST My father owns a small textile business in Manhattan, where he buys rolls of fabric and sells them at retail price. He has a pretty big store Midtown and compared to other small fabric stores around him, he has one of the most successful and biggest spaces. However, it is still not extremely successful. There are other fabric stores that are worth a lot more, such as Mood Fabrics. Compared to Mood, his store isn't even close to that level. I always try to urge him to make changes but he's too old fashioned and doesn't know how to make the business more modern. The fabric isn't organized at all, his website isn't up to date, his inventory data is exists only in his memory and every customer bargains because he has no set prices. He also claims that he lost his connections to buy designer or Italian fabrics for a cheaper price so now if he buys those fabrics to attract higher paying customers, he won't make enough profit. Most of his customers are looking for cheaper fabrics and he thinks he is stuck with that market. Any tips on improving this business? I don't have the experience or knowledge to try to convince him, but I know there are a lot of things he can be doing better. [link] [comments] |

Business Credit Cards; to have or not to have? Posted: 03 Jan 2019 04:04 PM PST That is my Question, should we get a business credit card? Is the added emergency fund worth it? Or will the APR pull away money? A little info, we run a music venue and bar. We are covering costs just barely so we are looking for a way to be able to have a back up while we build a back up. We have been in charge for 2.5 years the company has been in running for 7. We took over when we found out it was us or loose it. [link] [comments] |
Boss wants to borrow money from company to buy it Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:58 PM PST This just doesn't pass the smell test to me but I guess I'm just curious more than anything. My boss owns less than half of the small company I work for. The majority is owned by the family of the ex-founder (deceased). The company has a lot of cash. My boss wants to use that money to give himself a loan to buy the company. I doubt the majority owners really care anymore as long as they get a boatload of cash. This sounds shady AF to me but what do I know. Is this legal? Perhaps the implementation of that loan determines the legality, but once he owns the company, couldn't he forgive the loan? ideas for business to do with my kids to do to learn business basics Posted: 03 Jan 2019 09:35 AM PST I've got my own idea to go get a license from the city to do something super simple like sell gatorade and popcorn to people coming to the baseball games with my 6 and 10 year old kids. It seems like an easy enough model, doesn't really need to make lots of money, mostly just want the kids to get an idea for how a simple business could work and have it be something we can put the profits (if there are any) into something that they can use as they want to... Does anyone out there have a business project they've done with their kids or any ideas that they think would be more effective? They're both smart kids and I'd be helping them set stuff up. How to start a business in a financial crisis/ recession Posted: 03 Jan 2019 03:30 PM PST I'm starting a new business in the next few months as a franchise owner for a mobile phone network - I'm almost literally crapping myself with fear, having worked through the last financial crisis, I know how my industry takes a pounding. You know how loads of people/companies thrive in a recession and in the aftermath it's always because they 'studied trends and previous recessions' etc., well two questions:
