Do you have any questions about making a pitch deck? Ask me here!

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 11:49 AM PST

A pitch deck demonstrates the value of your company but most entrepreneurs don't know how to make one. I know this because most of my business involves making them for SMEs.

I'm not advertising my company at all, I just want to offer some advice and help anyone struggling to make their presentation.

I'm desperate to create resources to help the community but it's not something I often do so until I get my shit together, please take a look at some of my old projects for help. They all show various aspects of what is needed in a deck and how it could look. Of course, they're not perfect but you can never make the perfect pitch to please everyone. The people who hired me believed in their business, and they believed in their pitch deck too.

Edit: Please do ask me any questions you might have with regards to content, design, or delivery of a pitch deck!

Second edit: these are examples of decks, not the full thing! It's 4 select pages from each different project.

How did you get involved in your industry?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 08:59 PM PST

I have narrowed down a couple of industries that I would like to ultimately start a business in. The problem is that I am working on a completely different industry and am making pretty decent money. I want to continue to work in my current role to be able to fund a business at some point but also immerse myself in another and learn the ins and outs so that I can eventually open a business and know what I'm doing. Were there any of you in the same position? Did you have to get a job in your target industry to learn what you needed to know to get started? If not, how did you do it?

Validating an idea before going through legal paper works (?)

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 11:52 PM PST

I hope this is the right sub to ask this question.

How do you validate a business idea before you go and attempt all legal paper works? To explain my scenario, say I have an idea of grocery delivery business. I don't know what kind of logistical issues I would encounter. I can read and research about them, but there can be specific road blockers which I just can't see yet. An option would be to test this out on a small user base and see what kind of things we have to deal with.

Now, if I have to attempt anything in a business format, there are paper works, registration etc. (which involves a lot of time, money and effort). If I hit the said road blocker, all that effort would be in vein.

Where is the middle ground? How do I approach such a situation? Is there something else I can do?

I follow this sub regularly and your advises are exemplary ! I hope I can get some quality inputs on my situation too !

    Cheers !

YoBit account empty for no reason

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 01:22 AM PST

I awoke today to find my YoBit account empty as though no action ever occurred on it, deposits or withdrawals or trading. I'll let you guess how helpful support has been I'd be making a bigger drink but i only had .12 btc and 3 eth on there. I think it's because I am in Middle East country and they know I can not do anything. SEC does not care about us of courses

    Need help with market research!

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 04:45 AM PST

I listened to a podcast a while back (Mixergy? Can't remember) where the host talked about using a third party overseas company to do a bunch of research for him, and compile all the data in a spreadsheet. Any luck or experience with stuff like this? Any companies you recommend?

The specifics- I operate a boutique bakery, and currently only sell at one farmers market. I need to compile a list of all the local markets, days they operate, hours of operation, entrance fees, licensing needed, and months of operation. I could totally do it myself, but my time is better spent in the kitchen. Or on Reddit.

    Thanks!

How much did you invest in a company/brand logos?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2019 02:45 AM PST

I'm looking for a company logo, and a brand logo for our first product line. I'm willing to pay for quality, but I am unsure of what a reasonable price is for artwork.

(freelance videographer) how to deal with tough customers?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 07:06 PM PST

I shoot small scale corporate videos typically I go to the location shoot for an hour or 2. Then I go to the edit suit. For most part I get the video close to their vision and most people are happy with the first or second edit. rarely do i make it to the 3rd edit.

My current customer I believe this is the 6th-8th edit. and at this point they are picking things out that only someone who has watched this video 85 times MIGHT have noticed

their customers will not notice this as they may watch the video 1-2 times

i want to tell this person to go jump off a bridge

but they could be my most consistent customer yet

so how do i fix this

i am prorate so they are aware that i charge hourly, but they have run well over budget i personally ate some of the cost just to make them happy but at this point they don't seem too happy

    Question about parent companies

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 11:41 PM PST

    Hi all,

I've formed a few sole proprietorships before but my goals for the next few years are a bit bigger, looking for some insight.

Currently preparing to launch small travel advisement agency. No IATAN number since I can't get bonded just yet (no funding, complicated requirements of over 200k revenue). Ideally this would be the subsidiary of a holding company/parent company.

The holding company/parent company (xyz holdings, for example) would of course hold a majority stake in the subsidiary companies. I also do some stock trading, so eventually I would transfer these assets to the holding company for use as capital in subsidiary 2...

Subsidiary 2 is quite a few years down the road, but I'd like to open a hotel. Either manage/franchise a brand, or do a standalone independent property.

In order to accomplish this, would it be best to file one overarching LLC with multiple DBAs until the entities are self sufficient and profit producing? Or should I file for multiple LLCs with the parent company holding majority stakes in the others?

    Incorporation in Washington state.

    Getting Started seeking advice

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 09:47 AM PST

I have lots of questions and I fear that I will come across as a hot mess, but here it goes.

I have a niche market that I want to sell to.

The product I want to sell is relatively inexpensive and I don't think is really a viable candidate for drop-shipping. The reason I think that is because I will have to order a minimum amount from my source, and I anticipate my buyers only needing one item at a time.

I don't want to be stuck with a lot of inventory if things don't sell, so I plan on having only a few products initially until I ensure there is a strong enough market to justify expanding my offerings.

On my site, I want to offer the particular products, but also the option to have "surveys" for visitors to vote on the types of products to be offered next (or what they would like to see in the future).

I plan on initially just having the products for sale initially, but wonder if I should think about having a section that aggregates news article links regarding the products and a section for a blog to solicit comments and perhaps spur discussion.

Also, I am currently located in New York State. However, I will be moving in 7 months to one of three locations (TX, AL, VA). As my username implies I am gainfully employed and my goal is to establish this as a side job. My future location is based on where my day job sends me.

My thought is to obtain the domain name, get the site set up (but not made active) so once I move, where I locate I can go ahead and make my site live. I worry about the tax implications starting in New York State and then moving to a different state during the year.

I am seeking your advice and input regarding best places to secure domain names, and site development. I had someone recommend squarespace, but after reading these subs, I am leaning towards wordpress or shopify.

Sorry for my lack of Karma. I created a new account to specifically deal with the business questions and concerns I have. Any advice will be appreciated.

    A humble request

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 11:49 AM PST

Basically, I'm looking for advice on ZoHo CRM or an alternative.

    - I run a digital ad agency and we have a Sales Team that calls on leads and pushes them through a pipeline to a closed sale.

    - Sales can take a few days to a few months to close.

    - Our Sales Team never stops calling until we hear a real objection or until they ask us to stop calling.

    - A closed sale for us turns into a project that then get handed off to the Creative Team.

I am looking for a CRM or a way to organize our existing ZoHo CRM in a way that is conductive to this process.

I am having difficulty doing so right now, but I am well aware that Zoho CRM can be used for this. I can feel we are not using it effectively yet.

    Please help me (:

    * I might post this in different threads, and if that is against any rules, please let me know\*

    New company name

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 11:01 AM PST

Hey all! I love this sub and need advice on a new name for a new company.

It's a cleaning company that does residential repeat home cleanings, construction cleaning, commercial space cleaning, kitchen exhaust in restaurants cleaning, power (hot-pressure) washing, window washing, carpets, etc. Just most cleaning inside and out. We're slowly adding services as we acquire the equipment and training. We're building on an existing residential cleaning service with a name that doesn't suit our new business. We're hoping to acquire lots of new commercial clients. I was thinking of calling the new business something along the lines of "The Smith Cleaning Company" (using our real last name instead of Smith). Is throwing our last name in there a good idea?

Any and all advice welcomed!!! TIA

    Fleet vehicles

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 05:30 PM PST

I just bought a small/medium sized sales rep agency. We have 10 employees with company cars that are essential to their work, but the costs are high. I think we can get a better deal if we purchase a "fleet" of cars (likely pickups due to the nature of the work).

Does anybody have experience with this? Where do I start? What's reasonable as a cost per person per vehicle?

    Thanks

Software Rec request: Contact Relationship Management vs Customer Relationship Management

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 08:55 PM PST

I work in a creative industry where the majority of my contacts are relationship building, networking, collaborating on ideas etc.

Most CRM software are geared towards sales, closing business deals, etc that have a beginning and an end, which is not what I need.

I just want a CRM that tracks my emails, my contacts/conversations, and link to projects and/or creative ideas that may or may not come out of those discussions. Bottom line is, these are continuing conversations that involve a lot of moving parts that Id like to be able to "tag" or link.

Before I get on a call with someone Id love to be able to click on something and see the history of my conversations/contacts with that person. Or maybe click on a project and review who Ive talked to about it.

Ive tried a number of CRM and notetaking apps including Evernote, Streak for Gmail but I'm at a loss as none of them seem to suit what I need.

    Anyone have ideas or suggestions?

    Just Getting Started

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 08:23 PM PST

I want to take the leap this year and create a small online business that sells home goods (i.e. mugs, prints, stationary, candles, jewelry dishes, etc.) It's been an idea of mine for quite sometime and I truly feel like I'd absolutely love owning a small shop—through all of the growth that it may go through.

With that being said I am as green as ever! I would love any advice about how I can begin: Would starting on Etsy be a smart move? For items how would getting that inventory look like—do I reach out to manufacturers or partner with small businesses too? For a site, what's the best place to create one?

Non Customers hanging out for a while...

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 02:23 PM PST

Whats a way to politely ask non customers to leave when they are just hanging out without being rude? Some of the locals in the neighborhood come in to visit and sometimes they are here for a while just wanting company but I want to work or use the bathroom? Any tips? Should I just let them hang and not let it bother me? I try to say things like "I have a lot of emails" or "work to get done" but that doesn't seem to make the hint. What do you do?

What resources, tools, and applications do you use that have helped grow your small business?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 06:38 AM PST

There are so many tools out there designed for businesses that it can be overwhelming determining which are the best options and if they will actually save you time and help grow your business. For example, it can be a struggle figuring out if the benefit of an application designed for email marketing or data management will justify its cost. To that end, I think it would be extremely beneficial for the community to share the resources you all use that have actually helped grow your business (and maybe even those that haven't). Sometimes trial and error is not an option for a struggling business and a good recommendation can go a long way.

One cool tool I've found for curated lists of business resources is called postmake. I also have tools, apps, and resources I use professionally, but I work for a small business advocacy organization (Small Business Majority) and not a small business proper, so I'd be interested to hear what real small business owners have to say.

    LLC membership question

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 09:53 AM PST

My wife and I are starting a LLC with our daughter. My question is, do my wife an I count as one member together, or would it technically be a three-member partnership in the business. I believe you can have a married couple count as one member in an LLC, but I was also wondering about the pros/cons/benefits of the different possibilities. I'm just in the pre-planning stages, and I'm definitely not an expert (yet).

Professionalism on the phone, what’s your first sentence?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2019 07:47 AM PST

    Hi guys,

So far when I answer the phone I always say the same thing that seems to work...

From an unknown number (new lead) I always say: "JM House Washing, how can I help you?"

What I have an issue with is what should I say when it's a customer that I already have in my contacts, should I say something like: "Hi Nathalie, JM here, how can I help you"?

I know it's supposed to be simple, but I love tweaking small things like this to make the best out of it
