Facebook Has Just Been Caught Spying On Users' Private Messages And Data -- Again Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:16 AM PST Despite this, what has been seen today is the new reality for Facebook. The coming months will be dominated by headlines over any perceived data breach or misuse, as the company continues to put its PR low points of 2018 behind it. Their challenge is getting the clear blue water from scandal and controversy to make that possible. This last weekend saw the messaging integration controversy followed by Instagram (and others) caught up in a UK teen-suicide scandal, followed now by this. The 10-year-challenge meme earlier in the month, where users quickly questioned Facebook's motives and whether this was indeed just the harmless fun the company claimed or a clever-ish facial recognition training exercise, show what they're up against. SELL FACESPOOK NOW... A burning bridge out... [link] [comments] |
Bloomberg uses entire news article for advertisement Posted: 29 Jan 2019 06:05 PM PST Today Bloomberg has a news story about Equinox opening a new gym in New York City. (non-paywall) On the terminal this was under "Featured Stories" in TOP. It is under "Businessweek" on their website. Not their lifestyle section, not their Pursuits magazine, just smack in the middle like any other regular news story. The article has needless details like the price of classes, the location of the gym, and the number of participants. It spends multiple paragraphs touting how "it's become such a sensation" and describes the class routine in detail, letting us know that it "customizes the treadmill running to your own needs and style, and in a cool, immersive group setting." Is this business news? The images in the article are literally sourced and provided by Equinox. Does anyone else find this to be a very poor attempt at hiding an ad? Do you find this to be deceitful and utterly trashy behavior for a (supposedly) reputable news organization? Is there some other noteworthy business information here? Equinox making new gym classes is absolutely not the same as a new Tesla launch or a new Apple product. Those articles would never say "the new Tesla has really comfortable corinthian leather, and you can find it at the new dealership in Chelsea for 29.99". Not remotely close. [link] [comments] |

What is the difference in Advisory Shares vs Shares? Posted: 29 Jan 2019 11:45 PM PST I am watching Shark Tank and the Shark wanted 10% and she countered with 5% + 5% Advisory Shares. Does that change anything in the ownership of the business? Do the shares value differently? [link] [comments] |

EBay to Pay Its First-Ever Dividend Posted: 29 Jan 2019 04:32 PM PST https://www.wsj.com/articles/ebay-to-pay-its-first-ever-dividend-11548800151 EBay Inc. EBAY -0.97% said Tuesday it would pay a 14-cent dividend in March, its first ever, as the company faces pressure from hedge-fund investors to improve shareholder returns. The dividend, which is set to be paid on March 20, is part of a broader capital-return plan the company announced. It also added $4 billion to its buyback program. Its authorization was $3.2 billion on Dec. 31. Overall, the company said it would return about $7 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks over the next two years, with $5.5 billion of that happening this year. The company said it plans to exit 2019 with cash and investments at roughly $3.5 billion. At the end of 2018, the company said its cash, equivalents and nonequity investments portfolio totaled $8.6 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that hedge-fund investors Elliott Management Corp. and Starboard Value LP have taken stakes in the company and are pushing it to offload its StubHub ticketing and classified-ads businesses. Additionally, Elliott had said in a letter to eBay's board that the company could sustain a modest dividend, especially given that it was the slowest-growing technology company of its size without a dividend. It also called on the company to accelerate share buybacks. For the fourth quarter, the online marketplace posted a profit of $760 million, or 80 cents a share, compared with a loss of $2.6 billion, or $2.51 a share, a year ago. Excluding one-time items, the San Jose, Calif.-based company earned a profit of 71 cents a share, up from 59 cents the same period a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of 89 cents a share, or 68 cents a share on an adjusted basis. Total sales rose 6% to $2.88 billion from $2.71 billion a year earlier. Analysts had expected $2.86 billion of revenue for the quarter. StubHub revenue increased 2% from last year to $314 million. The company said that its number of active buyers grew by 4% across its platforms during the fourth quarter. For the full-year 2019, the company said it expects adjusted earnings between $2.62 and $2.68 per share and between $10.7 billion and $10.9 billion in revenue. Shares of eBay rose nearly 2.8% during after-hours trading. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 03:32 AM PST I have been trying to find a broker that will allow me to invest from overseas, but I am not having very much luck. I know that there are some prohibitions surrounding mutual funds and such, but I can't seem to find a company that will open up any type of account for me. The only response that I have received was for a Merrill Lynch managed portfolio with a $25k min buy-in. This is more than I am able to commit at this time, though. I am looking to initially invest $10k with monthly deposits of $500-1500. I have been in China for 6 months and was in Korea for 7 years prior to that. I have a US address that I can use, but I have read a lot of horror stories about accounts being closed when the broker finds out that they've moved out of the country. I'm just now at the point of my life where I am getting past the paycheck to paycheck and I would really like to establish a routine in the next few months. [link] [comments] |

Question about bond demand and bond interest rate Posted: 30 Jan 2019 12:38 AM PST To what extent is the interest rate of a bond determined by demand for that particular bond? For a bond issued by a company I'm sure the company has to set the interest rate at a level buyers are interested. But what about US treasury bonds? Is it pretty much set by the issuer (US government) with little regard for what the buyers want, since there is essentially unlimited demand for it? Then when we talk about the interest rate spread decreasing between short term and long term bonds who sets the rates? Is it the US government who solely determines what 30-year bond interest rate is or does the supply/demand for that bond play a role? [link] [comments] |

The bank has created 39 portfolios exclusively for its clients, and 34 of them are outperforming the market this year while three are posting an 11 percent gain, more than doubling the S&P 500's year-to-date return. The three winning baskets are "High revenue growth," "High Sharpe ratio," and"Dual beta," according to a broad note to clients on Monday explaining the portfolios' constructions and growth outlooks. Goldman has been handpicking stocks based on various proprietary themes and sectors for a decade, but these portfolios are only made available for its clients to trade on the Bloomberg terminal. The bank treats the members of the baskets carefully and doesn't always disclose all the member stocks, even in its daily and weekly notes. Along with good track records this month, the baskets also have solid long term track records. The bank doesn't suggest buying and holding the various baskets all at the same time. They recommend certain baskets at certain times based on the type of market environment. Goldman warned clients at the end of last week about companies with big revenues from China, and specifically, Nvidia, days before the chipmaker released surprise disclosure on China slowdown and blew up its stock. In the note, Goldman told clients to avoid its international sales basket and recommended its domestic sales basket instead for investors wanting to hedge against international risks. ________________________________________________________________ Indian home loan provider Dewan's shares slump over media report (Reuters)Article Link: https://in.reuters.com/article/dhfl-india/indian-home-loan-provider-dewans-shares-slump-over-media-report-idINKCN1PN1U0 Summary: NEW DELHI - Shares of home loan provider Dewan Housing Finance Corp fell 8percent on Tuesday following a media report that alleged financial misappropriation by the controlling shareholders of the company. Is Nvidia's lowered guidance a sign to buy? $NVDA Posted: 29 Jan 2019 06:09 PM PST Apple lowered its guidance for this quarter and it's stock fell to $142. However, when its actual earnings came out, they were better than expected (because of lowered guidance), and now its stock is trading at $163 after hours. Nvidia ($NVDA) also recently lowered its guidance, and its stock fell to $133. It seems like something similar could happen here. Is now the time to buy NVDA? [link] [comments] |

403b vs ROTH ira - first year school employee Posted: 29 Jan 2019 09:54 PM PST It's my first year working in a school district in SoCal and I'm trying to figure out how to invest. My salary for my first year is 90k. CALSTRS (CA teachers retirement - which everyone in my district HAS to contribute to) takes 8.25% of each check. The district contributes 14%. None of this actually matters because school staff pension is only 70-75% of what you make in your last 3 years. SO to supplement that income, one of AXA's lovely financial advisors (sarcasm in my voice) convinced me to contribute an additional $800 a month into a 403b. (The moment he left I emailed him saying I wanted to reduce it to $400 a month). Now that I've read up on different articles.. I've discovered that 403b's are shitty because of all of the fees they charge. I pay $30 a year in admin fees to use their online system (which I don't even understand how to use) and base rate fees and other fees I don't understand. ANYWAYS. I need help in figuring out if I should continue contributing to a 403b (in my district I could change it to Vanguard but would have to pay 5% of my withdrawal from my understanding - I only have $1200 in there right now so I don't mind taking the hit before I start investing more) OR just maxing out contributions to a ROTH IRA. If anyone could help and explain it in lamer terms to me I would be indebted to you! I've also emailed my advisor who sent me how the fees work if needed. [link] [comments] |
