Xi, Trump Agreed on No Additional Tariffs After Jan. 1: CGTN

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:06 PM PST

Talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump have concluded. No additional tariffs will be imposed after January 1, and negotiations between the two sides will continue. https://news.cgtn.com/news/3d3d414f3041444d31457a6333566d54/share.html

Previously, Trump put 10 percent tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods, which was planned to go up to 25 percent since Jan 1st 2018. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/17/trump-puts-new-tariffs-on-china-as-trade-war-escalates.html

The Trump-Xi talk today agreed to keep their trade war from escalating by halting any new tariffs for 90 days. It is a good news to the stock market, given that a truce talk between the world two largest economies will give both sides more room to negotiate future terms.

Edit: Thanks for the Gold Award! My very first one on Reddit. You make my day!

    U.S. - China G20 Summit WH Readout

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:58 PM PST

    1. On Trade, President Trump has agreed that on January 1, 2019 he will leave the tariffs on $200 billion worth of product at the 10% rate, and not raise it to 25% at this time. China will agree to purchase a not yet agreed upon, but very substantial, amount of agricultural, energy, industrial, and other product from the United States to reduce the trade imbalance between our two countries. China has agreed to start purchasing agricultural product from our farmers immediately.
    2. Very importantly, President Xi, in a wonderful humanitarian gesture, has agreed to designate Fentanyl as a Controlled Substance, meaning that people selling Fentanyl to the United States will be subject to China's maximum penalty under the law.
    3. President Trump and President Xi have agreed to immediately begin negotiations on structural changes with respect to forced technology transfer, intellectual property protection, non-tariff barriers, cyber intrusions and cyber theft, services and agriculture. Both parties agree that they will endeavor to have this transanction completed within 90. If at the end of this period of time, the parties are unable to reach agreement, the 10% tariffs will be raised to 25%.

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 04:04 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

    Unpopular opinion: fear mongering

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 12:01 AM PST

Surely I'm not the only person that gets annoyed at people saying that the market will "crash" with little to none financial knowledge. It really just fucking grinds my gears that people's brains are so simply influenced by speculation in media.

Like I wonder how all the people buying gold in 2013 went when the market was "bound" to crash, they got 5 years of shit returns as punishment.

Has have retail investors on here (not institutional) purchased CDs selling at a discount in the secondary market?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:46 PM PST

If so, where? Would you recommend this as a more lucrative alternative to CDs on the primary market (slightly higher yield if they are selling at a discount)?

    Tesla - Saudi buy out

    Posted: 02 Dec 2018 02:02 AM PST

    Hi everyone

I am writing a small article about the 'buy out' of tesla by the Public Investment Fund from saudi arabia.

If this had succeeded the company would go from public to private.

I was wonder if this investment fund is a corporate investor or not? I have to classify this investment fund between a business angel, a venture capitalist, private equity or corporate investor.

Do any of you know which one it is?

    Thanks in advance

    Free Cash Flow Calculation

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:11 PM PST

Hi, I am currently having some queries regarding FCF calculation, hope you are able to help me.

FCF = Cash Flow from Operations - CapEX + Net Debt Issued

Would like to check whether this is the correct formula as there others as well. I obtained this from https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/knowledge/valuation/fcf-formula-free-cash-flow/.

Also, regarding the calculation of Cash Flow from Operations,

It requires the calculation of change in Working Capital. The issue I have is, what if I have a negative change in Working Capital? How do I then proceed?

Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If I want to retire at say 55, should I fund all my investments outside of tax shelters and just pay capital gains of 15%? Or is it better to pay the 401k and IRA fees?

Inevitable boom in electric auto sector

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 12:12 PM PST

As someone in the auto industry it's obvious to me that the electric car industry is going to boom very soon, and will make a lot if people rich. What are you guys doing to prepare for that? It's overwhelming thinking where to start, but even if you disregard Tesla and their news, there must be goldmines in future battery companies, charging companies, repair, sales etc. Opinions?

    Local currency question.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:49 PM PST

Hey everyone I'm sorry in advance if this is not the place to ask. I'm 20 years old living in the middle east. A year ago I started reading about investing as a means to have more money when you retire so I opened an account in a local investment company that lets you put money in a S&P 500 tracking fund. I send the company local currency which they then trade for USD to buy the shares but, the money in my account is still represented in local currency so, the price of the US dollar affects my overall account value.

The 10yr conversion chart looks like this: http://imgur.com/a/i7dXbX1 It basically goes up and then down every few years.

The thing that I couldn't find an answer to online is does this hurt me in the long term? Should I do something about it? Thanks for reading.

What's the deal with Clean Surplus Accounting?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:54 PM PST

I recently finished Buffet and Beyond by Joseph Belmonte and I am having a hard time believing that such a simple calculation will yield superior stock selection. His claim that selecting stocks based on clean surplus alone would have beat the DOW for thirty years seems dubious at best. So is clean surplus legit or is it simply too good to be true? Is it even used in the financial industry when it comes to evaluating securities?

iQIYI Prices Offering of US$650 Million Convertible Senior Notes

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:17 AM PST

I read the article and the numbers are very attractive to (only, wtf) institutional investors. I have two questions for anyone kind enough to enlighten me.

    1. Why is this available to institutional investors only?
    2. How can we expect the stock to react in the short term, given the news of this offering?
