Is it normal for an adult to be under parent's car insurance?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 07:52 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm 21 and will be graduating my college next year and I was wondering is it normal to have a car insurance under your parents after you get your job and live apart? If no how old should you get your own insurance?

I quoted my 2004 Toyota Camry from my insurance company and the cost difference was quite significant.

Sorry I was in college and rarely drove when i was in my dorm/campus

Got a payout from another driver's insurance. Do I have to repair my car?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:01 PM PST

A while ago a truck driver backed into my car leaving a dent in the hood. I took the car to a body shop and got a quote to replace the hood which came out to $1500(!). Provided that info to the other driver's insurance, and sure enough they cut me a check for $1500. Now, I'd love to not have a dent in my hood, but I'd much rather have $1500. Can I just keep the money and not repair my hood?

Trying to determine whether this is ok via google has been harder than anticipated. It seems like the answer is "it depends." Some information that might be important: I own my car outright, it's registered in Washington, the accident happened in Oregon, and the quote I got was in California (I'm traveling).

    Thanks!

I got a DUI. Can my friend use my car to commute?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:49 PM PST

Back in August I got a DUI. My roommate wants to use my car now that he has a driver's license but I have long since canceled my insurance policy.

    1. Can he get his own insurance on my car? Since he's a new driver I don't want to just renew my insurance and let him drive around using that.

    2. Will he need to be on the title of the car to get insurance for himself? It's my car and he's planning on saving up for his own. I wouldn't want him to have ownership for my car, only for the damage.

Note: The car is paid off, registration up to date, and my name is the only one on the car.

    Thanks for any information

Theft Insurance For a Road Trip

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 08:26 PM PST

I am heading out on a road trip for a couple of months from Ontario to the southern states and Mexico. It will be a climbing and paddling trip - I will have thousands of dollars of climbing gear and paddling gear.

I know that car insurance typically doesn't include possessions. I have also hear horror stories of people's vehicles being broken into on similar trips and ruining it.

What options do I have for theft insurance? Would there be coverage changes when I am in Mexico?

    Thanks!

Can a non US resident become a broker?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 05:11 PM PST

Currently I am able to stay and work in the states due to the dreamers act. I am interested in becoming an inusrance agent/broker as I have worked as a CSR for another broker in the past but have recently gotten the itch to come back and get licensed.

I've tried looking this up and haven't been able to get a definite anwser. I am a Mexican citizen if that matters and my only US documents are my USCIS alien number and card and my California drivers license. Thank you.

What are the rules for a car being totaled?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 10:46 PM PST

Hi, I was in an accident a little more than 3 weeks ago. Due to nonesense with insurance companies it took till now for the other party to admit fault and agree to inspect my truck. My truck is a 1999 Ford Ranger with almost 200,000 miles on it. This truck is extremely sentimental to me as me and my father did maintenance on it together as well as replace things like the alternate, battery, dash lights, etc. Due to the fact that the airbags went off and the front bumper, blinker and tire need replacing, it will get totaled. I need to know if there are ways that I can keep the vehicle after. Thanks for your help.

Not sure what to do - Car Accident

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 06:20 PM PST

I recently was a victim of a hit and run accident and currently in a rental car. I ended up slightly rear ending someone in the rental (regardless of fault, rear ending basically always the back cars fault Ive heard). Now my car does not have too much damage; a small crack in the bumper but not very noticeable and missing tow hook cover (easily replaceable). The other car had a dented trunk and missing tow hook cover in the rear. Information was exchanged but no cops were involved. I used my Chase card for the rental and was confirmed that my car would be covered in event of accident.

My question is: should I involve insurance at all? I have 2 other accidents on my record (one falls off at the end of the month) or should I simply pay for the other drive out of pocket after an estimate? Because the damage is so slight on my car, I was planning on replacing the tow hook cover or simply saying someone backed into me while parked (might be bad down the road if something happens and the other driver reports). Any help is greatly appreciated. I want to put this stuff behind me and move forward the best, but cheapest route as I am at risk of losing my house and very short of money with 2 jobs already.

How true is it that a lot of insurance companies are very micromanagement heavy with their call center positions?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:37 PM PST

I've seen on companies like GEICO that the main complaint is that they're very micromanaging and metric driven. Why are they like this if it's true and how do you guys deal with an environment like that?

    Short term disability eligibility

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 03:25 PM PST

So my husband has STD coverage through his employer. He started his job there last october, and you had to be employed for a year before you got these benefits. So he just qualified for it.

He has been having sciatica in his left leg since june. It has gotten so bad that he hasn't been able to work. (Weekend nights) he had Friday off Thanksgiving week, worked Saturday, and had to take PTO Sunday due to pain. He doesnt have a diagnosis right now, but his mom did an MRI on him but no radiology report. It showed a herniated disc. He went to the ER last night due to not being able to walk. They gave him a steroid shot, something for pain, and muscle relaxers. And a doctors note for the weekend. He has used PTO for this weekend (Friday and Saturday) but he doesnt have enough for Sunday. He is in so much pain he can barely walk. (He does maintenance for work)

We have an MRI scheduled for Tuesday. And a specialist appointment for the following Wednesday. We are expecting surgery to be recommended when we go. Anyways do you guys have any advice on applying for short term disability and what we will need? Its through cigna. We do not know what to do about next weekend or even tomorrow night because he has no PTO and he cant work. I dont have a job because I am still in school. We need some kind of income to pay our bills.

    Any advice is welcome.

Filing non-fault accident claim with my insurer, but still want rental reimbursement.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:20 AM PST

My car was hit while legally parked and unoccupied - this is reflected in the police report. Based on the damage, I assume it will be totaled.

I do not have rental car reimbursement coverage through my own carrier, but what I'm finding online would suggest the at-fault driver's insurance would often cover that.

Is there a way for me to get a rental car, and then pursue reimbursement for that expense, even if I am filing a claim through my own carrier? I understand I would likely be paying the cost up front, but would hope to be able to include that in the amount recouped by my carrier from the at-fault driver's carrier.

Home & Auto - loyalty or cost?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:10 AM PST

Hey all. Throwaway account, not normally a poster. Please forgive / suggest fixes if I goof somewhere 😬

I have been getting my home and auto insurance through a 'family friend'. I don't even know how the relationship started, honestly. I just know he's been a distant acquaintance for a long time but I don't really know how much trust I want to place in him. Furthermore, I'm extremely ignorant about insurance and only starting now to learn. Got some info through quoting process at least...

My question for you kind, generous, and helpful people is, more or less, what should I do? What are the ramifications of my actions should I switch for price? I do like the idea of saving money each year but I don't want to save 'pennies ' and cause a huge shortage in my future if I have a claim or incur fees somehow. Thanks in advance!

My current home policy is with Travelers. Coverage is currently as follows: Dwelling 441,000 Personal property. 220,500 Other structures. 44,100 Loss of use. 132,300

Personal Liability (bodily injury and property) 300,000 each occurrence

Medical payments to others Each Person. 2000

Deductible. 1500 Earthquake deductible is 15%

Cost of insurance is $2427 / year

Autos (2): Bodily injury. 100,000 each person 300,000 each accident

    Property damage. 100,000 each accident

    Medical payments. 1000 each person

Collision. Actual cash value less 500 deductible

Comprehensive. Actual cash value less 250 deductible

Extended transportation expenses 30/ day, 900 maximum

    Loan or lease gap coverage

    Personal property. 500 limit

    Roadside assistance

    Trip interruption

Uninsured motorist bodily injury 100,000 each person 300,000 each accident

Underinsured motorist bodily injury 100,000 each person 300,000 each accident

Cost per year (paid in full once / year) $1503 So my total is 3930/ year

I got 4 competitive quotes. The best priced competitor was State Farm. Next was American Family.

State Farm annually: 1921 + 1377 = 3298 Differences in coverage: 400,000 dwelling vs 441,000 Personal property at 75% vs 50, 300,000 instead of 220,000 Water/ sewer backup at 40,000 vs 10,000 now with travelers (unfinished basement)

Car rental is 80% of cost, 1000 max All medical payments at $5000

American Family annually: $3647 Differences in coverage: Personal property at at 75% vs 50, 330,000 instead of 220,000 Loss assessment coverage for 10,000 Earthquake deductible is 20% instead of 15

So details are done. Now, I told my 'family friend' that we quoted and found cheaper options by about 20 % / year. He couldn't do anything to match them he said.

He did caution me that switching carriers frequently can ultimately have negative consequences after a claim. More likely to be dropped or flagged high risk or something... I didn't understand some of what he said because kids screaming during phone call 😑

Question regarding insurance claim for lost/stolen phone?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:01 AM PST

My phone was stolen at a mall. I have no proof it was stolen so it could be lost but when I went to track it it was offline so I'm pretty sure someone picked it up. I bought the phone using my credit card and it has loss protection. They sent me the claim documents to fill out and they want a copy of my homeowners' insurance (if I have it) saying that smartphones isn't covered.

It's my parent's house, not mine. I got a copy of their homeowner's insurance and smartphones and computers are not covered. The thing is I didn't tell my parents I lost my phone because I would NEVER hear the end of it. I am a student so yes I still live with them. I just went out and bought the same exact phone and financed it for free using my personal credit card so they have no idea. I'm afraid if I provide their homeowners info they may contact my patents? I also don't wanna lie and say we don't have homeowners insurance because it says any misleading information is considered fraud. TIA

    Homeowners and renters insurance

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 11:53 AM PST

Last night some asshole pulled a hit-and-run on my primary car parked in front of my house. I don't have comprehensive or collision coverage, so I'm looking at other options. It looks like they had a hard night that the rear axle is bent and is probably no longer drivable. I also have extreme doubts that even if the driver would be caught that they would have insurance

Before purchasing our home about four months ago I had a renters insurance policy that is not your expired. I also have my homeowners insurance policy. I was wondering if either of those would be able to help me with this. Even if I could get help replacing the car seats ( since the warranty is now void ), that would be pretty great.

    Any thoughts?

Red Sports Car Causes Me to Lose Control - Car Spun in Circle - 4 Cars Involved - Mine Totalled

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 02:18 PM PST

One way liability insurance with Geico. There is a 4-lane highway. This took place i45N in TX on November 30, 2018. The leftmost lane will be labeled as lane 1 and so forth.

I am in lane 3 going 65 and there is a red sports car in lane 4 is going around 80-90 mph. The red "sports" car [it had a sleek design that screams a sports car but I am not sure the technical term of it] swerves into my lane to the point where it almost hits my car. My response is to change into the empty lane 2. I go a bit too far and enter lane 1 so I try to correct myself by going back to lane 2. I lost control by doing so. My car spun and hit the guardrail, and is totalled front and rear. The 3 cars behind me hit the brakes hard and hit one another, gathering some damage to the front or rear end of their cars. The red sports car is nowhere to be seen in the aftermath. I did not manage to get the plate from the red sports car.

Luckily, no one was injured. A witness who watched it all happen was able to explain to the police that I didn't hit any cars. However, I am not sure if anyone saw the red sports car that was trying to change into my lane. Regrettably, I did not obtain the witness' contact information.

I called my insurance 3 hours after the event and told them what happened. I then called my insurance again the afternoon afterward to ask them how it would affect my policy. They did state that they couldn't give me an idea of what the outcome would be because they could not see in the police report any mentioning of the red sports car that first caused this mess.

I understand that my response to the sports car caused the mass chain effect of the other cars hitting into each other. However, the initial cause of my loss of control was that red "sports" car (that I don't have any information on). [I am definitely buying a camera for my car from now on and now have a severe hatred/trauma for red sports cars.]

I am worried that I will end up with the liability issue because there is no mentioning of the red sports car and that would put me at fault for the whole mess. I just want the truth where the red sports car swerved into my lane and caused my loss of control.

Is there any way that I can corroborate the red sports car? I am not too knowledgeable about insurance, so what should I do now?

Will I be at fault for the other cars even though I didn't hit any of them?

Edit* My airbag didn't deploy. I did receive a Faulty Evasive Action ticket. Edit** The red sports car was already swerving into my 1/2 front passenger side, his and my car about 3/4 feet to touching.

    Health Insurance - California

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 01:18 PM PST

Is it too late to get health insurance for December 2018? I don't want to get Obama's tax penalty. My job starts in January so I was just going to wait till then to get reinsured.

I'm a new grad from university and my coverage ended mid September. Apparently if you go over two months of being uninsured, you'll get taxed a large amount.

Is there any insurance you guys know of that I can still enroll in for this month to avoid this tax? Thank you.

Tips for a cheaper car insurance?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 04:55 PM PST

I have a 2015 Toyota corolla and had an incident 3ish years ago where I hit a curb and my old car got damaged. That shows up on my record and it was an odd curb I couldn't see in the snow and now my very basic insurance from Erie is the cheapest I could find at $130 a month. Any other insurers I might be missing besides the big names. This insurance is eating my money for almost no coverage! Help!!

South Dakota, USA. Total loss of my vehicle. I have no idea what to do. Please help.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2018 09:08 AM PST

This may be long so I apologize. On Tuesday my car was totaled right in front of work by a cowoker of mine. We both have full coverage and I believe I have GAP warranty.

This is the catch. My girlfriend and I moved up from Texas to South Dakota about 6-7 months ago. Down in Texas she never needed a car so she had no need for a license. So she never bothered to get it. The dealer ship that I bought the car from is going bankrupt and in the process of selling the company. I lost a lot of my original paperwork on the move up to South Dakota and can't find anything about the gap warranty and now I can't reach anyone at the dealership to find my original paper work because most of them have all left the company.

The accident was not our fault because the coworker ran a stop sign and t-boned us. The only thing we did wrong was my GF has no license.

Our insurance said they are willing to pay 17,000 of the 23,500 balance. My coworkers insurance hasn't really said much to us since Wednesday. I am afraid I won't have a car and still have to make payments on a totaled vehicle.

Also I know I have GAP insurance because I used to work at the dealership and asked the Finance manager multiple times if I had gap warranty which he told me multiple times that I did.
