Why does nobody allow you to specify a business is the owner of another business? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 09:13 PM PST I just formed a subsidiary company that is owned by my main company. What I'm finding is that nobody seems to support this structure despite it being common. I tried to get a bank account today and their system wouldn't let them specify a non-human as the owner. I tried to apply for a credit card and same thing. I tried to apply for an EIN and it just said they had technical problems and to try again in 15 minutes. But after trying for 4 hours I just relented and said I was the owner and it worked without error. So now I have to file a form 8822-B. The only success I've had is getting my business license with the city but it was still unintuitive and required me spending 2 hours on hold. Has anyone else run into the same problem? Posted: 07 Dec 2018 02:50 AM PST So, I am running some Facebook ads and some Google ads, and I was wondering what your thoughts were. Have you ever signed up for a SaaS / Business productivity service, from an ad you have seen in your Facebook feed, or would you say that you only ever really signup when you are looking for a service to fill a need? I guess I'm wondering how often have you been surprised by a service you needed on a Facebook ad at the right time that you needed it? Or would it more be, you may see it, and IF it interests you you may visit the site, but really, you will only sign up when you need it... For info, I have a multi-platform inbox and CRM tool. How to deal with charge backs? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 04:54 AM PST Wife has a small beauty shop. We received a letter from her credit card notifying us of a charge-back request from a customer who was not happy with the services. We asked her to come back to fix any problems. She refused. We have the signed receipt which includes a tip. Is there anything I need to know before I send them a copy of the receipt? Thanks [link] [comments] |
I’m thinking of buying out half of a small business, need some advice! Posted: 06 Dec 2018 05:13 PM PST Sorry if this is not the place for this, please direct me if it isn't! I work for a small local coffee in my town. To keep this short there's a lot of drama with the 2 current owners, and one of them wants to be bought out and I'm heavily considering it. From what I see it is doing very well and the only reason for the buyout is because of the drama. I do have a meeting with the woman I'd be partnering with in a few days, but i have never done this before so I was just wondering if anybody has advice/tips/things you wish you would've known or done differently with your business. Posted: 06 Dec 2018 09:47 PM PST Need a multi-line business phone system for 5-6 users with each having their own individual extensions. US/Canada Unlimited calling would be highly preferred! So far looked at Versature and RingCentral - But I feel the price they are quoting (around $200/month) is too much! Wondering if there are other cheaper-yet-similar alternatives? [link] [comments] |
Become a small wine distributor in California focusing on single product Posted: 06 Dec 2018 08:21 PM PST I've been seeing these small novelty bottles of wine for a few years now, first overseas and now in the states. They are a few different wineries imported by the same company. I'm not sure who is distributing them yet, but the distribution is extremely limited. I want to look into purchasing these myself, repackaging them into a gift pack like this and selling directly to liquor stores. Maybe later also sell them individually just like the current distributor is doing. Where should I start? I currently have the below in mind.
Through previous work connections, I have a lot of friends that own liquor stores in areas where I think this product would be perfect. I would start selling there. I would be a one-man show to start and focus solely on this product. Could anyone offer insight on the above or good places for me to go from here? Is it possible to start up a small business of this nature or is the industry closed off to small-timers? (I also have some money saved up and really good credit) [link] [comments] |
Veterinary practice owner opportunity Posted: 06 Dec 2018 05:36 AM PST Hi all. Hopefully I am in the right place. My significant other and I have a bit of a unique situation. She is a Veterinarian at a small clinic. Recently, the owner/lead veterinarian has fallen ill and is terminal. One of the options presented by him is having us buy into the clinic. I'm wondering how we go about the process of deciding if this is right. I assume we would need a valuation of some sort on the clinic to ensure its profitability etc, but we are both quite lost on where to start. It's something we were planning to do down the road, but ideally after having more time in the area/with the clinic. We both believe this could be a great opportunity, but obviously we want some good reading material on how to do our due diligence. Any advice or recommended reading would be greatly appreciated. Thinking of starting a non-profit Posted: 06 Dec 2018 05:27 PM PST Has anybody here started a non-profit business? I'm thinking of starting my own health clinic and I'd love to create a non-profit and benefit the less affluent people that can not afford care on their own. Any tips, warnings, or stories from starting your own would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
How long do you allow for exchange/ refund? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 06:05 AM PST Hi there! I had a customer by a piece of jewellery from an event I was vending at, the first weekend of September. It was a vintage piece, and quite fragile, so there is really no way of knowing how long it should last for. She contacted me a few days later, and said that it had broken on the way home. I had 2 more in a similar style, so straight away I replied and asked if she could return it to me (I think I would have been and to fix it) and that i could replace it or refund it. She asked where I lived and as I was busy at the time I "thumbs upped" it, but admit I forgot to reply later on. I saw her a few weeks later at another event where she introduced herself, and I said i could replace it, but she didn't have the original with her. (She also showed off a belt she had made and straight up told me - and showed me - she had copied my design (a series I had been working on for a good 7 months and only just released publicly) because she "liked your stuff so much, but couldn't afford it, so I made my own". Obviously i can't stop anyone from doing that, but it didn't exactly endear her to me, but I guess that's another story!). I've not heard anything from her since, and would like to honour my word, as I think it's right, however, I don't think that is an open ended offer, and should have a reasonable time limit? It's now December, so it's been a good 3 months and I've not heard anything else from her. I've just seen on her SM that she is away traveling and performing for 2 months, not back until January. Is it reasonable to expect that I should hold the other one that I have left for her, for 5 months? Should I be the one to pursue it and follow up with her or wait to see if she gets in touch again? I would like to exchange or refund it, to get it over with, but I would like to get the original back if possible. Other than blatantly copying my design, she has been nice and friendly in communication. She also has a huge social media following and - while I don't think she would - I would not like her to do a negative post about me. Any thoughts? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Tax implications for bloggers? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 09:21 AM PST Hi everyone, I started a blog a few months ago and have started making some income through referral fees. I have a couple hundred dollars in business expenses as well. I honestly haven't done anything else other than that. From a tax perspective, what else might I need to do? Do I have to get an EIN or something?? Thanks. I'm a total small potato but just wanted to check. [link] [comments] |
Trying to hire an assistant for the month of December. What insurance do we need? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 02:33 PM PST Hello, I have a Video Production company with my three other siblings, all of us are sole owners of the company and there are no other employees. We are a registered LLC in the state of Arizona. We need to hire an assistant for the month of December since our workload increases tenfold. We'd just need them to do simple tasks like running errands or setting up for a video shoot. What do we need in order to do this? We talked to our insurance company and they said that getting Workers Compensation Insurance was a big hassle and that it's a lot to go through for one part-time employee. Is there a way we can do it as a paid internship without having to get Workers Comp? Thanks, Cole [link] [comments] |
Business partner won’t deliver $500 check owed to me. Posted: 06 Dec 2018 02:27 PM PST In the grand scheme of things $500 isn't going to break the bank, but the principal of the situation has irked me. I started operating a division of a company outside of the state that the company is based out of. Back in August I sold my first job for them and did the job myself. The check was mailed to the main company for accounting purposes and then it was supposed to be routed to me after they take their percentage. Well nothing has come back my way at all. I've obviously addressed the issue but I keep getting the run around. I'm not trying to provide a lot of details...but did I get screwed out of this money? [link] [comments] |

I went in debt about $20k to start a business, now what? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:47 PM PST Recently, after about six months worth of work, opened a business with 2 partners. I kept my day job, will earn about $41k this year, and essentially piled on another after-hours full time job plus weekends getting the business up and running. I did give up some earning opportunities that I would've typically counted on any other year, in order to put in the time needed for the business. On top of that, between being too busy to really track or worry about my personal finances as well as some unexpected out of pocket expenses for the business (beyond my initial investment) - I've accumulated about $20 grand in credit card debt. I did already have some revolving credit card debt (I know, I know ooof) which is getting lumped into this, but ultimately I've got to get everything all paid off and back to square zero anyways. Right now my biggest liabilities are: I live in a MCoL area currently, but may move shortly to a slightly lower CoL area (hopefully with a roommate) after the holiday. As for the business, my partners and I don't anticipate recouping our investment likely until the end of 2019, which would mean profits would be to follow in 2020. Unless the business experiences some incredible burst of unforeseen growth, I'd be staying at my current job earning roughly what I've been earning (luckily the business we've started is mostly hands off does not require anything approaching full-time involvement) with some opportunity to capture some outside income streams. Basically, my biggest question is, what do I do now? Do I just bide my time, patiently waiting for my new business to get up to speed or do I need to actively change my financial outlook before then? Using a virtual business address UK ONLY Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:45 PM PST Anyone used any of these online services that let you rent a virtual address for you business? I don't want to use a PO box. Has anyone got any suggestions or recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Dec 2018 04:54 AM PST So I mostly do local B2B sales , and am starting some sales on Instagram. I have set-up a business account there for 3 months already, 10 pics of my products and around 30 followers. So how to build followers and genuine leads? I get the usual 20-30 likes per pic but no actual sales/results. So any tips and suggestions would be welcomed? Should I ask professional e-commerce company? But also scared that I might just get ripped off with them. So the thing is how to reach the critical mass? Currently, its nowhere with instagram [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:01 PM PST Hi there, I own a very small bicycle shop and we have a fair amount of inventory ranging from little tiny nuts/bolts to brake levers to complete bicycles. I want to find a scanner that I can use to scan in inventory when it comes in and will also scan items in conjunction with my POS upon checkout. Does this kind of scanner exist? Do I need two scanners? How do I connect it to my POS? If anyone could give me step by step advice for dummies style instructions I'd very much appreciate it. I'm also trying to find the best/most affordable POS for my needs, but find all of the websites and support on those sites are too eager and very confusing as to what I'd be getting. Ugh. Any advice on the scanners/POS system would be so awesome. Cheers! [link] [comments] |
Curious, for those who offer 401k and/or HSA, what are your cost (outside of any matching)? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 07:59 AM PST I am looking at a few options, and am trying to get a few more data points on cost. What is your fee structure like, and for how many employees? [link] [comments] |
Lil Orbits Donut Machine Business Posted: 06 Dec 2018 11:36 AM PST Has anyone started a mobile food truck or vending position w/ Lily Orbits donuts? My wife and I are wanting to start up one for our son, who has autism, to work at when he is older. Is this a profitable business ... not looking to make 100's of thousands but just enough to be comfortable and put money back for his lifetime care. Any help!?!?!?! [link] [comments] |
Are you raising prices in 2019? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 10:42 AM PST Hey everyone! With 2019 almost here I'm sure many of us are doing our annual reports, looking at the numbers and planning ahead for a successful 2019. There is so much business advice out there about how to do this that or the other thing. But I wanted to post a friendly reminder that when it comes to REVENUE it can be looked at quite simply because there are actually only four ways to increase revenue:
The fourth point is especially powerful, and with the new year coming quickly, I'm wondering if anyone here is doing a price increase? Yes/no? Tell me why or why not I'd love to hear everyones stories. With many companies I've known, price increases were THE most important milestones for revenue. Do your research of course, but if you've been working hard all year long to improve your product/service, and improving customer care and gaining positive reviews, imo the new year is a perfect time to increase your prices. If you have a moment, please check out this article I wrote. I dive into price increases and all 4 methods a bit more: https://bookedin.com/blog/how-to-increase-revenue-without-working-overtime/ [link] [comments] |
Any way to sign up for Home Advisor without the setup/annual fee? Posted: 06 Dec 2018 10:40 AM PST I'd like to create a business page in all the known indexes like Yelp, Home Advisor, Angie's List and so on, but until I gather enough user reviews I don't see a real reason to paid-advertise my pages. I called Home Advisor and they told me that the only way to create a regular, basic business page on their site is to pay an annual fee of around $300. From your experience - is there any way to skip that? Many thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 06 Dec 2018 10:36 AM PST After a few years of only selling in the US, we're starting to look at the untapped potential of the European market. I've read a little about the VATs, and it's making my head swim. I have little to no experience in this field and am not quite sure where to start. Any help or experience you've had with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
