How Ricky Gutierrez is a major scam (Learn Plan Profit)

Why do all stock market headlines indicate a causal factor? "Market drops due to Huawei exec". "Stocks tumble based on trade fears". There are probably macro factors driving a lot of market pricing, no?

how does a CEO leaving a company usually affect its stock?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 11:49 PM PST

or does it have much of an effect at all? to put it more generally, do you think CEOs are overrated or underrated?

i'm actually asking because i'm finishing a massive final paper that's due tomorrow for an class on the economics of digital media companies. my company is gannett co. inc, and i just found out its CEO robert dickey announced he's retiring (-: so, if you have any thoughts on what that'll mean for GCI and its shareholders, that would be great too, but i'm mostly just trying to get a gauge on how important CEOs are re: stocks!!

i sold 6 figures of vtsax today. i tried to cancel 10mins before market close but it said it was too late to cancel. i am selling by dollar amount not shares though its just a conversion i imagine.

its currently showing as "in progress". does this mean itll use todays EOD price (not after hours)? or does it mean it might use tomorrows price since its not complete yet.

what price will it use and when will my funds available?

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 07 Dec 2018 04:04 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Bloomberg: "Titans of Junk: Behind the Debt Binge That Now Threatens Markets"

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 12:34 PM PST

    https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2018-corporate-debt/?srnd=premium

Masayoshi Son and Elon Musk leveraged their dreams to the hilt. Patrick Drahi stockpiled debt to build a global cable empire. Michael Dell loaded his computer company with risky loans to buy out activists threatening his control. And a group of Chinese developers borrowed big to expand in the nation's booming property market.

Call them the titans of junk.

But chances are that anyone who socked away cash into a retirement account during the past five years has lent them money. Investors have parked trillions of dollars in mutual funds and exchange-traded funds that buy junk bonds. Pension funds in Canada have started leveraged-finance lending operations. Insurance companies have helped bankroll leveraged buyouts. And, in an echo of the subprime mortgage bubble a decade ago, investors from Sydney to Seattle snapped up hundreds of billions of dollars in AAA rated securities known as collateralized loan obligations that are actually backed by the debt of junk-rated companies.

The article covers SoftBank, Netflix, Tesla, Altice, the factors that lead to the current debt binge and when those loans are set to mature.

It's not as if regulators didn't attempt to keep the borrowing in check. The three primary entities that oversee the U.S. banking system—the Fed, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.—began cracking the whip in 2013 on banks that underwrote debt that they considered too risky. One no-no: any loan deal that loaded a company with debt more than six times its Ebitda would get extra scrutiny, and barring any offsetting factors, those banks often were slapped with warnings.

But that barely made a dent. Even as the big banks turned away the riskiest borrowers, a host of firms that fell outside the purview of banking regulators—securities brokers, boutique investment banks and even pension funds—swooped in to underwrite those loans. Instead of capping leverage in the market, it continued to grow

    And a related article: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-12-06/loan-deals-scrapped-or-sold-at-deep-discount-as-market-falters?srnd=premium

    Take Two or Activision

    Posted: 07 Dec 2018 03:48 AM PST

Looking to buy the dip and get some more exposure to gaming/esports.

Both stocks have been beaten down but the general sentiment I'm getting is people are bullish Take-Two and bearish Activision. Personally, I think every other Call of Duty is futuristic and every time it's futuristic sales disappoint bringing Activision down, and then the next year they sell a non-futuristic game and everyone's in love with them again. Conversely I think Take-Two is a great company but everyone is just up on them right now because of red dead redemption 2.

    Thoughts? Which would you buy?

The old rule of having 2x your salary saved at 30. 3x at 35, etc. Does that include equity on a home?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 06:03 AM PST

Is this rule of thumb even very good? Seems kinda low to me tbh. Especially if it includes home equity, but why shouldn't it? I'm guessing it does.

    Making a perfect hedge

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 02:35 PM PST

    Hi,

I have a bit of a tax riddle I'd like advice on. I have a low income this year, but will have a substantial income next year. This means I can take a tax-free profit of ≈$5000 this year, and next year would be able to write off 30% of an equivalent loss as a tax deduction.

So the question is how to open two positions, one generating a $5000 loss, and one a $5000 profit. Depending on the type of instrument used I can isolate the funds within separate accounts that don't generate tax until the account is realized as a whole, which helps reduce risk. The obvious answer is to go long/short in the same stock, but this requires a fair bit of money behind. Any other ideas, ideally where one instrument goes to 0 while the other doubles?

    TSP Withdrawal Question

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 10:38 PM PST

I'm considering investing additional savings in my TSP for a down payment in about 12 years, which is about when I expect to leave the service. Can I do a partial withdrawal from the TSP and roll that into a Roth IRA for purposes of withdrawing that money (contributions and earnings up to $10K tax and penalty-free).

My understanding is that I will be assessed an early withdrawal penalty if I take money out of the TSP directly for a home purchase because the withdrawal comes proportionally from contributions and earnings at the same time, hence the penalty of tax. (I'm not looking at doing the loan because I'll be leaving the service before I purchase a home and will not be able to repay it back once separated). That is why i'm thinking of doing a partial withdrawal (let's say about 40k) that will be used to supplement the money I already have in the Roth.

Sounds complicated and very specific but am hoping someone could shed some light. Thanks!

    Software still going strog

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 06:14 PM PST

Surprised that it doesn't get more coverage here how software has outperformed S&P and Tech as a whole.

Names like ServiceNow, Autodesk, Adobe, Salesforce, Workday and Microsoft all still very positive YTD and in the last session as well when the sky was falling for everyone else.

I believe the secular growth story of business digitization, moving to the cloud and recurring subscription revenue make these stocks resilient to macro factors: almost none of them have mentioned any potential headwinds (apart from FX) going into next year and all have still been posting pretty strong earnings.

Isn’t a drop in stocks towards the end of the year positive for mutual funds?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 04:58 AM PST

All of my mutual funds DRIP around December 11-19th. Wouldn't it make sense that I would want the funds lower around these dates to purchase more shares at better prices?
