    Advice needed, do I hire a social media company?

    Here's my deal, I really do not enjoy the social media aspect of business. But unfortunately it's a huge piece of the puzzle for my industry (beauty supplies). I made a goal for myself to post more, get out there more, etc., but honestly I'm more of a behind the scenes type person. Many of my competitors are people who seem to live on Instagram (and it pays off for them). I'm just not like that, but feel the pressure to try to be like that. I started to think about it's always good to farm out your least enjoyed work so you can focus on what you do best. But I also need a very personal touch to my social media presence. Any advice would be so helpful, I'm just kind of stuck between "suck it up and do it" and the dread of doing it. Just not sure what a good solution would be. I'm a DIY type business owner in general.

    Starting a smocking (baby clothes) business

    Hey everyone! My girl friend wants to start a smocking business in Australia. She already has an idea on how she's getting her stock and what she wants to sell, which will be baby and toddler clothing. Tge only thing she's stuck on is how she's going to get customers and put it out there. It'll be an online business, so customers will receive their orders via shipment. Is there any way she can figure out how big her customer platform will be before she starts it up? What can she do to get a response from people telling her they're interested. She already wrote on the smocking website and only got one response. Also, if anyone on here is interested, I'd be more than happy to hear it. Thank you in advance.

    I opened a small business it didn't work out

    I opened a small lingerie business. I was the one making custom orders. The first couple months i made about $200 each month. I can only sew so fast. I haven't had hardly any sells. One month i made $20 one month $10 and now no sales. I slowly kept building my inventory hoping to sell some of my inventory until i got order requests but only sold a few pieces... i spent a lot on materials. Fabric, sewing machines, patterns etc... and had to pay sales tax on it, i spent more than i made in sales. I havent been able to afford the $300 minimum for wholesale.
    My customers are exotic dancers at a club i work at. I kept it open because i thought sales would start back up once business picked up. But ive had no luck. I was just reading i have to take steps to stop my business. Ive made less than what the minimum is thatd require a business license for, am i supposed to pay sales tax still? If i have already paid sales tax on the materials. Or am i double taxed? And if its just me working for my business do i still have to report it to the state? It costs $50 to put in an application to close it. I don't have the money at the moment. Im lost and confused. I have to figure out how to do this sales tax form. I live in Utah

    If I get paid in 2019 for contracting work I agreed upon/completed in 2018, would that income count for my 2019 profits?

    I did notary work for some companies this month and anticipate getting paid in January.

    I knew the contracting price of the assignment before hand.

    Does that money only become taxable when I realize it?

    If so, what happens in 2018 as far as reporting that work?

    HR Advice Needed

    My family member is a small business owner with 5 employees. She allowed the manager to come in over the holidays to catch up on some work/collect some more hours. Payroll came into the office and the manager opened it, despite it being it addressed to the owner and with "Confidential" on the envelope. Manager was able to see all year end reports: monthly and annual distributions to each employee, including the owner's salary. Owner feels distraught and feels like she cannot trust her manager anymore. Owner doesn't have any other people to talk to and doesn't feel like she has any sources of comfort. Manager is control of some accounting and oversees other employees. What would you do in this situation & why?

    EDIT: Do you think that there is a solution w/ keeping the manager? Manager has been v. helpful in the past year but obviously we are now thinking about how to reverse dependency on them. Is termination the obvious option?

    How to do Background Checks on my employees?

    I run a small local tutoring company (LLC), and I'm looking to hire more independent contractors (1099/W9). Since the education field deals a lot with children, I want to get background checks on everyone who applies to work for my company.

    My boss has is thinking of stopping his business. A colleague and I could inherit the business. I have questions.

    Some extra info. For about a couple months, or so he says, we would be able to keep doing the work from the shop as he won't be closing it down for use in his new non-profit. That means we would keep using the material and the machines to make our product.

    What are the downsides to a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA)?

    I have a Delaware S-Corp. I would like to set up a company-wide policy that the company reimburses employees for all medical expenses; insurance payments, copayments, prescription payments, etc? I think this would qualify as a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA), right? It seems like a no-brainer to basically pay all medical expenses with pre-tax dollars without the hassle of setting up and managing an HSA.

    What are the downsides to an HRA?

    Taxes for 3-member LLC

    Morning, all!

    I am the manager of an LLC with three owners. The last two years, we have used an accountant to prepare our taxes. I want to be sure we aren't spending unnecessary money, though.

    Is software like TurboTax business accurate and easy to use? We use Quickbooks for our accounting and keep a close eye on the finances. The accountant has reviewed all financials in past years, so we are sure we are tracking income and expenses in the right categories.

    Only complication I'm worried about this year is that we had a partner leave the LLC this year, which can complicate the act of assigning income and loss between the remaining partners, no?

    So, thoughts? Can a reasonably smart guy with some accounting classes in his background do tax prep for a small LLC taxed as a partnership, or should I keep paying the CPA?

    Question about Business Cards

    I have a question regarding business cards. I am in the midst of starting two pretty small business whilst going to school at the same time. I am very passionate about them and I love the struggle of attempting to build them up.

    A problem that I ran into is that I've been going around to businesses and inquiring if they would like to utilize my services. In doing this, most of the time they say to leave my name and number so that the "decision maker" can make the final decision and give me a call once they get back to the store or become aware of my offer.

    What I've been doing is just giving them post-it notes with my name and number on it but it looks really unprofessional. I didn't really mind it but one person suggested that I get business cards. These would definitely make things a lot easier for me.

    My problem is I have two completely separate businesses in two different industries and I don't know if I should just get a card with my general contact information or tailor the cards to my different businesses. Also, I really don't want to be spending money on this type of stuff especially at the start. However, business cards would help me not only with finalizing sales but also getting my name out there.

    So, my questions are:

    1. Should I get different business cards for each company or just ones with my name and general contact information on them? (I'm leaning more towards my general contact info and then just mentioning both of the businesses somewhere on there)
    2. Also, do. you have any recommendations for ways to get business cards for really cheap? (The cheapest options I've seen are Vistaprint or creating my own with business card paper) Should I just go with Vistaprint or is there ability that creating them myself is cheaper?

    Ensuring I am Compliant with State Requirements for Meal Prep Business

    I am looking to start a meal prep business. I have been doing research on the internet as to what is and isn't needed in terms of permits, certifications and licensing for catering and restaurants, but I feel like a meal prep business isn't either of those things.

    Who would you recommend I talk to about making sure I am up to code and compliant with state requirements? A "food lawyer?"

    There is one other person in my immediate area doing something similar, but with regards to competition, I would prefer not to reach out to them.

    Advice needed, do we need a special license to resell chocolate (not manufacturer!)

    My mom wants to start a local business buying chocolate from a distributor, making them look nice on trays and baskets and selling them as client gifts to corporate customers. She would not be actually manufacturing the chocolate. We are in Massachusetts.

    Are we able to do this in our house? Do we need special permits even if we aren't making the chocolates, just re-boxing essentially?

    Press Release Help

    I am trying to expand our audience and writing a press release came up as a way to draw attention to your company and have the media pick it up. Which in turn means they link to your site and you gain more targeted traffic and possibly conversion. Does anyone have any experience with this? We have been an ecommerce leather goods company since August 2017. Any thoughts on what kind of content might get picked up or common mistakes submitting a Press Releases?     Financial Mgmt Question for Small Business Owners

    Hello, Small Business Community,

    I am hoping to gain some insights from small business owners (<$5MM/yr in revenue) as I am considering leaving my finance role WITH a small business to consult FOR small businesses. TL;DR Below.

    Disclaimer: This is NOT a solicitation for my services. I am seeing if this is something where I would be able to have 4-6 steady clients down the road and seeking advice, even if it is "Many people offer these services for cheaper" or "Most small biz owners have this knowledge". I would be doing this solely on my own, not hiring other consultants and starting a firm.

    I have been the controller of a small business for some time (Roughly $2MM Revenue annually). When I started, there was virtually no bookkeeping process and there were a lot of errors (lack of reconciling, bookkeeping errors and incorrect accounting, etc) that took a substantial amount of time to clean up. In just a short period of time, I was able to:

    • Create a clean process for recognizing expenses and revenue.
    • Make sure our bills were getting paid
    • Make sure our clients were paying us.
    • Ensure that we were compliant with federal, state and city laws with respect to regulatory licensing as well as payroll taxes and business taxes etc.
    • Produce clean financial reports 5 business days after a month closed and present financials, with key performance indicators and variance analysis.
    • Formulate a budget and plan for cash flow and growth, as well as debt management.
    • Create a chart of accounts that makes sense

    I could go on. I feel as though I accomplished quite a lot. One of the reasons I was able to succeed is that my boss (the owner) is an expert at "the business" itself and has NO financial sense whatsoever. I was able to work, on my own, to fix past errors and put together processes that will be around long after I leave.

    Unfortunately, I am at the point where the ship has been "righted" and much of the debt has been paid down, thanks to proper budgeting. I say unfortunately because it has been expressed to me that I could be replaced by a much cheaper bookkeeper. Perhaps this is my fault for not demonstrating my own value. I think the accounting and finance part of the business is doing so well, my boss thinks if I leave, it will stay that way.

    The way I see it, there may be quite a few small businesses out there where the owner is REALLY good at one thing: (Catering? Event Planning?) But not so good at running a business financially. Is there a market for someone such as myself to work as a part time CFO (possibly overseeing a bookkeeper) but also provides bigger picture month end close, reconciling, budgeting and analysis? Is this already a thing that is quite common? I have head of companies charging a retainer or a % of revenue for this, but I was thinking something more like a flat hourly rate, something like 20-30 hours per month.

    While I'm not opposed to moving on to a larger firm with more responsibilities, I have thought about the possibility of consulting for other small businesses like this one with the thought that, as far as hourly rates go, I would be making more money. I would market myself as being able to do any of the following: " Short term guidance: "righting the ship" and putting forth a plan and process so that someone else could handle day to day bookkeeping and accounting. " Long term but part time CFO: handling the bigger picture (month close, producing financials with analysis and budgeting forecasting the future. Anywhere from 10-50 hours/ month " Business Startup: helping with the licensing/ regularity/ paperwork/ banking and other startup financial tasks

    Summary, TL;DR:

    I am a controller for a small business wanting to know from small business owners:

    (A) Do you see a value in a part time/ hourly consultant acting as a Controller/ CFO?

    (B) Is this something that is common or commonly offered? Do you do the financial management yourself?

    (C) Are there any other financial issues (other than raising Capital) that you need help with?

    Dealing with First bad review?

    I operate a small family owned furniture store and I'm Trying to figure out if this is something out of my hands and suck it up. For example :

    A client responded to one of our ads we posted for Listing every detail for a bedroom set we were selling for $600. They called and planned to come to our location seeing how they liked it. Upon arriving they complained it was too much. I know its at a great deal since Most big corporate stores sell the same set for $300 more. I was wondering should i response to the review stating what i just said? Or just leave it how it is? I took a quick glance at the clients review history and most of it is just bad reviews.

    How do I determine where my target audience "hangs out"?

    So here's the gist. I know exactly what customers I am looking to target right now (small businesses who are not happy with their current CRM and are ready to make a switch), but I am struggling with where you find those people. The obvious one for me was to keep an eye on review sites to catch people leaving 1-2 star reviews on a CRM. Other than that, I am drawing a blank.

    Any advice you can provide on market research and how I can identify those potential leads would be much appreciated.
