Insuring and registering a car not in my name in another state TX-FL

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 08:17 PM PST

I'm moving to Florida soon from Texas and need some info on the insuring and registering process. The loan on the vehicle is in my dads name and the loan company still holds the title. The car is upside down so I don't see refinancing it as an option. He also has it in insured. What steps do I need to take or does anybody know any companies that will insure a vehicle that is not in my name? Also will this effect the registration of it?

    Thanks!

Work Comp Question. Posted awhile ago.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 10:41 PM PST

California. My dad had a head injury at work. A shelf full of stuff fell off and hit him in the back of his head. He went to the ER and they did an MRI and CT. Radiologist told him it's very important they redo imaging in a few weeks since fracturing and swelling might not show up till later on imaging.

He's on WC disability. Here's what's going on. His treating doctor refuses to do any diagnostics. My dad is having small seizures, throwing up, double vision. His speech is slurred.

He got a lawyer, but the lawyer only cares about the disability checks coming in. He's useless as far as everything else goes.

My dad finally got referred to a neurologist. The WC neuro is just as useless. All he gives is ativan for my dad which is the cheapest medication there is to prevent seizures. His words were "Haha, well you're off of work, what more do you want?" He too refuses to do any diagnostics.

The insurance company is already sending letters saying his condition might be prexisting he had mild headaches 9 years ago.

I think there is something very bad going on with him that isn't being diagnosed (either purposely, or his treating comp doctors are quacks). As soon as they see work comp on the intake form, they get him out of their office as fast as they can.

My mom called up ALL the top research hospitals in the state (UCLA, USC, Stanford). None of their neuro departments accept WC.

The only neuro's in the comp system are low ranked doctors who have a shit ton of complaints online.

My dad is afraid of using his private insurance because it's work related.

My dad is scared of moving forward with comp since the healthcare seems to be useless for him.

    Any advice would be great.

How much Insurance companies loose during/after fires?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 09:40 PM PST

CA had been through terrible fires last month. Thousands of properties were leveled to the ground. I'm interested how much do insurance companies cover? Do they have enough money? Do even insurance companies help with stopping the fire or its all on the city/state?

Ankle Surgery is Financially Ruining Me

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 08:16 PM PST

I have an HMO-I guess it's a pretty crappy plan. I severely broke my ankle and it has required surgery. I am being told that it's going to cost $7,100 out of pocket and that downT even include the balance. As a person with insurance? (United Helathcare) is there anyway I can make that payment smaller? I only earn about 40k a year and this massive bill is going to set me back dramatically. What is the point in even having insurance if it's going to cost this month? So I have any leverage or recourse? Your help is really appreciated.

Car insurance with family member with DUI -Michigan

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 06:22 PM PST

    Hello,

I have a situation I hope you all can help with. My spouse got into an accident in 2017, and was also charged with DUI. (Alcohol caused the accident) It was a first offense, and spouse has done everything required by the courts. The court portion (probation) should be over with soon (30-60 days?) if things continue the way they have over the past few months.

My auto insurance (Meemic) sent me a letter that I am being dropped due to spouse's DUI. We have always had separate vehicles, and separate insurance policies, even though we are married.

We are (because insurance told us we were required to) BOTH listed on each other's insurance policy as authorized drivers. For the most part, my spouse didn't drive my cars, and since the accident they have not. I DO drive my spouse's cars due to them being "the family vehicles" so to speak. From my research, I don't believe Michigan allows us do exclude a driver in any case due to state law.

I have had zero tickets or chargeable accidents of any type for the 30 or so years I have been driving. I have a 2009 vehicle that I have full coverage on, and I keep PLPD (Liability only) on the 1997 vehicle. Spouse has a 2015 vehicle with full coverage and a 2003 vehicle with liability only.

Is there anyone you all can recommend that will insure me, hopefully inexpensively? I previously had Progressive, but I didn't have the greatest experience with them so they are at the bottom of my list. State Farm and Allstate were 3-5 times more expensive than Meemic, before all this happened, and they had lesser coverage than Meemic.

    Thanks

I provided registration for the wrong car. Need help with next steps.

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 05:36 PM PST

I just realized I did something dumb.

A couple weeks ago while transferring a couch, I drove a huge Zipcar cargo van down my small city street and swiped right by someone's parked SUV. It left what I would estimate to be $150-$300 of damage to her rear fender. She wasn't there so I left a note.

20 minutes later: I returned the Zipcar, came back around in my girlfriend's Subaru and the SUV owner was there so we had a nice chat. I gave her my ID and (here's the dumb part) the registration for the Subaru, instead of the registration for the Zipcar. I also didn't contact Zipcar (yet).

Geico just contacted me via email a couple hours ago with the claim and I told my girlfriend. She fears that this is going to raise her insurance rates drastically because she just got into a similar accident.

Any thoughts on what I should do to avoid my girlfriend's insurance going up? I don't know if I should contact Zipcar and report the accident, ask the girl I hit to settle outside of insurance, or tell Geico the truth. I imagine the truth sounds sketchy because it's so dumb that I gave the girl the insurance for the wrong car. I don't know how to explain that except that I was kinda frazzled by the whole thing and just wanted to make sure she had all my information.

    Thanks in advance.

Aparment at fault for fire and or is paying for my stuff?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 05:24 PM PST

Tldr; apartment caught fire not my fault, manager is paying for my stuff, how do I itemize videogames, board games, furniture, electronics medicine, food. Even a reddit page linking to how to itimize would work. As long as its detailed on retro video games.

I had an apartment fire, no renters insurance needed or had, my apartments are being absolutely amazing about everything. The fire was contained in a wall but when the firemen got to the wall with axes everything filled with smoked, everything is has smoke exposure. They told me to itimize everything even my tooth brush which wasnt even near the fire or smoke. I dont want to be frivolous but I itimized my books at retail and cost to replace with pictures of the books and details of the authors in a excell spreadsheet. I'm on to my next catagory which is :video games( separate from electronics) like 360 games n64 games atri games, some are in cases some are cartridges. Should I itimize them? How should I itimize them especially the ones in the cases the discs are unaffected but the case and artwork page displaying the game is affected which effects the value with authenticity. Then onto the my huge collection of cards against humanity. Over 15 box collections put into one specific box "the bigger, black box" miscellaneous board games. Sentimentals? Medications? Food? Kitchen stuff?

Someone scratched my car while they got out

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 04:53 PM PST

    State: OK

So last night I was attending a performance and while I'm sitting in my car waiting before I go in, someone parks close enough for me to notice and look up off my phone to watch. I'm watching and sure enough, the driver opens their door and nicks my car. He noticed he hit my car, looked at it for a second, and just walks off. I'm a very anxious person and I just didn't know what to do other than watch him walk off and then I hopped out and took pictures of his license plate, his car, and the scratch. I knew he went in the same building I was going to go in so I figured I'd leave a bit early and try and catch him before he left and get his insurance info. I come out after the performance and he was already gone. It's about an inch long scratch that's pretty deep but it's not a dent (which dent protection is sadly the only thing extra I pay for).

Tldr: I watched someone hit my car with their door and it left a decent scratch. I didn't get their info but I have pictures of their license plate and car.

My question is what do I do next? I asked my friend to ask his police officer father what to do and he said if I wanted to, I could file a police report and give them the license plate and VIN. I'm sure it varies by insurance company but in general, should I file a police report if I want to file a claim? Is there criminal liability on his part if I report him? My auto insurance is through State Farm so if anyone knows specifics, I'd appreciate it.

Question about negotiated rates with dental plan

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 02:21 PM PST

I need a lot of work done on my teeth. I have a yearly benefit maximum of $2000 through Delta Dental.

My question is, if I reach my benefit maximum for the year, am I then subject to the regular rate of a procedure (for example, the regular non-negotiated $200 filling instead of the negotiated $100 for my in-network dentist), or am I still able to get the negotiated rate and pay that out of pocket?

NJ: Question on 3 different car accidents

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 02:03 PM PST

So within a short amount of time, I was involved in 3 auto accidents. All 3 I was found not at fault. I have a dash cam and it proved it. Anyway, my insurance policy lists a $500 deductible and a $30/day car rental. I am bringing my vehicle into the shop for 3 accidents and they are making me pay (3) $500 deductibles. My question is if they are making me pay 3 deductibles, should I also be able to get (3) $30/day car rental? So if my car rental with tax and fees comes out to $50/day, I should not have to pay anything out of pocket.

Questions regarding fixing my car (other party 100% at fault)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 01:23 PM PST

I previously posted here about issues with my car title being in my ex-step mom's name and the insurance check, but now that the other party's insurance has accepted full responsibility, I have a few questions / want to confirm that my understanding of how this works is correct.

So, I don't THINK my car is totaled, but it was probably only worth about 5 grand before hand so I wouldn't be surprised. I hope it's not. Anyways.

I have an appointment scheduled with one of the other party's insurance body shops to give an estimate. I assume that it's not optional. They have to have someone they work with look at it, I imagine. Is that correct?

I obviously want to get multiple quotes of my own. Assuming it's not totalled, my understanding is that using these quotes Generic Insurance Co™ and myself will negotiate the amount to be paid for damages and deminished value to make me whole again.

Then I get a check (or my ex-step mom does, and either gives it to me like I think she will or a battle ensues). THEN, please correct if I'm wrong, but if I decide that I don't really care if the paint matches exactly, or I decide to go to a scrap yard for a new bumper and have a friend of a friend fix it, OR hypothetical ly if I were to decide to not fix it an all (which I have to, got some dangling bits) that does not change anything. Just because I decide I am okay with being 80% whole and having an ugly car, does not absolve Insurance Co from their obligation to make me 100 whole. Right?

So I can keep any difference from other party's insurance settlement, and what it costs me to fix my car to my satisfaction. That's my understanding.

Now, I have read that if I decide NOT to fix it, then that has some implications. For example if I get into anther accident, whether or not I'm st fault, it could cause issues with "which accident do we attribute these damages to" if they can't tell the old from the new. But that's if DON'T fix it. What if I fix if for 80% of what they pay me for the damage. And it looks perfect. Or if I fix it for 50% of what they pay me, but you can definitely tell there are still "damages" such as slightly different paint or something.

How do would an insurance company decide to value my car in a future claim in one of these scenarios? Is it just based of how the car looks? So, if they can tell a difference, for example differing paint, they'd just knock off the amount it would cost to match and paint the bumper? Or the amount having slightly mismatched paint diminishes the value the vehicle?

I hope that makes sense. I'm still so pissed about this.

    Tl;dr:

    1. Do I have to take it to their body shop for an estimate and inspection?
    2. Can I negotiate the highest amount I can, and then fix it for as cheap as I can?
    3. If I didn't fix anything, or only fixed it partially, what would be the implications if there were to be a future accident?

    Thank you all so much!

Car Accident NYC, Hit and Run Parked Car

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 05:45 AM PST

So I live in NYC, car was parked and some person hit our car and then left their car there - we have pictures and it's 100% obvious they're at fault.

Collision added like a 100 more a month to an already 200 a month bill so I never got it - BUT I do have uninsured coverage. This made me realize collision is a necessity, especially in NYC and will get it soon after.

My car insurance told me that I would have to contact their insurance company after the police figure out who the person is since I don't have Collision.

Since I've never dealt with something like this, I'm just wondering how does this play out? What should I be aware of when contacting their insurance? I have a feeling they'll never be able to get in contact with this person and can't see getting out of their insurance.

Even trying to sue this person seems like ti wouldn't do much since they had a pretty run down car. Would my uninsured policy come into play there or how does this work?

And I'm going to talk to the police again but anyone know how long you have before you have to move a car on alternate side parking days in NYC when there was an accident? (not blocking any traffic)

    Any advice appreciated

Eye doctor sent claim to health insurance instead of eye insurance

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 10:58 AM PST

When I went to the eye doctor last week, they took both my health insurance information and my eye insurance information. They had no need to take my health insurance information as I was there for only an eye exam but they stated that they do both optometry and opthalmology so they wanted to have my health insurance on file as well. I did not object to giving them this information. My eye insurance allows me to get glasses (frames and lenses) or contacts and an eye exam with dilation once a year for mostly no charge to me. Today, my health insurance sent me an email saying that I have a charge on my account as my claim was denied. The eye doctor had charged the eye appointment with dilation to my health insurance for 200 something dollars. However, in purchasing my glasses, they charged my eye insurance for the frames and lenses as they should have. My eye insurance even shows me still eligible for an eye exam this year.

Now to my questions... Is it even possible for the eye doctor to cancel the charge to the health insurance company and process it through my eye insurance as it should have been? Or am I somehow locked into something from all of this happening without my knowledge?

    Car Accident, Head on Collision

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 04:34 AM PST

My wife recently got in a car accident (Texas). It was a head-on collision in a controlled intersection where the other driver was turning left on his red. My wife had a green light. Police, EMS were at the scene and the other driver accepted his fault. 3 airbags were deployed (driver, side, seat) however my wife didn't suffer any major injuries. My wife didn't go to the ER but went to see the doctors the next day after having a sore hand, minor pain, back stiffness and some bruises on her lower abdomen. The doctor ordered an abdomen ultrasound for any possible internal injuries and everything was normal. The doctor ordered some muscle relaxers and told her to take 2 weeks complete rest.

Since this is our first time in a car accident, I would like to seek some help with this community to see whether we are going in the right direction or not.

This that we did so far:

    1. Filed the claim with other driver's insurance (Statefarm)
    2. Working with state farm adjusters
    3. Provided a rental car by state farm
    4. Filed injury report to state farm

    Questions:

    1. The car is in pretty bad shape, so I am thinking it will be a total loss ( Images: https://imgur.com/a/6wvUwkw ). Statefarm is still reviewing it. The car was a 2017 Mazda3 GT with all the premium packages, was purchased new and financed. What is the process of total loss settlement?
    2. Since my wife is going to miss her work for 2 weeks, can she claim for lost wages? If yes, what sort of documentation is required? She is a nurse and gets her base hourly and shift differential.
    3. She is using her health insurance for doctors visit and test. Does the insurance company pay just the out of the pocket medical bills or the actual amount billed by Health Care Provider to the health insurance company?
    4. My wife still has some back stiffness and pain on her body and cannot lift and pull heavy objects. Does insurance company pay any settlement for pain and suffering?
    5. Is there any other settlement that I should be aware of?

    Thanks,

auto insurance / where you park

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 10:20 AM PST

Can anyone here tell me why auto insurers charge *more* when you park your vehicle in secure underground parking as opposed to on the street?

Seems to me that makes as much sense as giving higher discounts to people who get in accidents more frequently.

    Coordinated Medical Question - Michigan

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 09:00 AM PST

    Hi,

I live in Michigan, which is really important because we have some weird laws regarding insurance here. My auto policy comes up for renewal in about 2 weeks so I'm going through the motions of getting quotes from different companies so see if I can save a few dollars. I thought one explanation from one of the local representatives was a little strange so...

He quoted me on the PIP (Personal Injury Protection) for Coordinated Medical. We had just gotten the run-around on this question from my medical insurance so we DO NOT think that my current medical insurance provider coordinates with the auto-insurance. When I pointed this out to the representative, because I want to be covered in the event someone is hurt in my car, including me), he said that even if my insurance didn't coordinate, I'd just pay the $500 deductible and get the benefits. If the medical insurance DID coordinate "even a little bit" then I wouldn't be responsible for the deductible.

Is he misrepresenting the coverage? If they have me down for coordinated benefits and my medical insurance doesn't coordinate I would imagine that I would be responsible for any medical expenses and lost wages that resulted from an injury. But he's saying that I'd still get the PIP coverage from their company and I'd only have to pay out $500.

If he is misrepresenting the coverage, who do I make a complaint to?

Just found my car hit and run and my back bumper is ruined. If I increase my coverage and lower my deductible, and report in 2 days, is there any way my insurance can find out that I changed my premium after the accident?

Is it possible to get and extension on the enrollment period for ACA Health insurance? (U.S,)

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 05:59 AM PST

I have a chronic illness that requires expensive treatment. Some plans don't cover what I need, so I always have to do a lot of research to make sure. My employer is switch insurance providers and now they're saying they won't have the plan details until the 17th. Open enrollment for ACA ends the 15th. So if I said on my employer, it may end up being more expensive and not cover my needs, but by then i wouldn't have any other options. ACA is normally more expensive since employer doesn't pay a percentage, but it may end up being the only plan that works for me.

Are there rules that they have to give us the information before open enrollment ends? Can I extend the ACA open enrollment?
