Training an employee to be more self-sufficient

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 03:57 PM PST

I have an employee and she's lovely, but we are stuck on a dynamic where throughout the day she asks for a task, one-by-one, and comes up to ask "What's next? What's next? What's next?"

It was fine at first, and I honestly think she intends to sound engaged, but it's really tough to constantly find another task for her to do. I can only manage to do it as long as I neglect my own responsibilities.

How to train her to paddle on her own?

Visa Gift Cards, MC gift cards, Amex gift cards without chip... accept or not?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 01:47 PM PST

I'm running a brick and mortar business. And after switching over to only accepting credit cards with EMV Chip, we haven't been hit with any charge backs. But not sure what to do about Visa gift cards (or any other universal gift cards). Has anyone experienced charge backs on Visa gift cards? Does anyone have any recommendations on how to protect yourself from visa gift card frauds? Does visa gift cards have emv chips now? Thanks for looking.

How would you list your small business on your resume?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 04:42 AM PST

I'm looking to transition into full time work, but naturally that's difficult. How do you list your experience as a freelancer or small business owner on your resume? I don't have an LLC, but I've thought about it.

I'm in the freelance writing arena, but curious about all areas.

Would really like to review your Youtube business channels.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2018 02:22 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I do Youtube full time and I really enjoy reviewing YT channels and helping companies grow. If you have Youtube channel and you are uploading videos about your products for example, I would be happy to help you for FREE. Also if you are not yet making videos I would be pretty happy to help you what kind of videos you could make to get closer to your customers.

To this moment I did more than 200 reviewed channels... I have a lot of time right now because of christmas and could give back something to the world. I wont share my products/site etc. I don't need it. Maybe I will do also a video review. If this kind of thing is not OK from moderators perspective I will delete this.

I took over a business and in turn wound up in debt to a company

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:01 PM PST

I'm going to try to make this as short as possible. Essentially I took over a business from a family member that I didn't want to see let go. The building the business is in is an absolute steal, so when I took over, I pretty much only wanted the spot. Fast forward through nightmares of dealing with scammy companies with contracts in my llc name (yes, I had the llc signed over to me as well. I would not suggest this to anyone. Just start a new one, for the love of God). A lot of things were on autopay out of my account that was also in the llc name. I've gotten most of this sorted out. My main issue is an account with Safe Touch. The account is not in my name, it's in another family members. I've been asked to make the payment so as to not destroy the family member's credit. I know I have no legal obligation here. The kicker is that when I closed my business account I had to start manually making this payment. I have honestly never even used the security system. Now, due to some oversights on my behalf, the account is in the red ~300-400 dollars. I've looked into SafeTouch as a company and found that this family member somehow signed into a three year contract. I paid the bill for a year. Again, never used it. Should I bring the payment up to date and continue to pay out the contract or just let the whole thing go and suffer the consequences? I just need some general advice on how these companies work. If sent to collections will it ruin this family member's credit? Is there a way out of this situation without someone getting screwed??

Started small business by accident, no records

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 08:14 PM PST

Earlier this year my wife started trying to learn photography for fun under the guidance of a friend that was running her own business. At first it was just tagging along here and there, but then she started getting paid cash for a few odd jobs. Next she bought a camera, lens, and started doing shoots on her own. Next thing you know she's doing weddings and more, has a business name (but no LLC or anything), but it dawned on me too far in that she really wasn't keeping any records of income, receipts, mileage, or anything. Now im not sure how to handle this come tax time. I'm really nervous about the lack of any documentation. Any advice or direction would be really appreciated!

    Feedback

I've got a friend that is big into drone mapping and surveying. Him and I both learned fix winged drones in the military and both have a survey back ground. He seems to be doing well. I'm looking for some additional feedback on if the market is saturated or not. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What kind of web developer should I look for to design a site similar to this?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 03:21 PM PST

    Here is the link: https://www.weddingwire.com/c/or-oregon/portland/wedding-cakes/820-2-rca.html

I don't need it quite so in depth as the link I provided, I would just like to create a website where users can create their profiles like the one I listed, and customers have the ability to rate/review products.

I am sure this too technical for using services such as Squarespace and Wordspace, so I am wondering how I should go about finding a web developer that can create a similarly formatted site.

I don't need it quite so in depth as the link I provided,

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks

    Law Label Tags

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 08:56 AM PST

I have a small start up Missouri LLC. We purchased product from India. The manufacturer has to put Law Legal tags on a few of the products.

The Law Legal tags have to say the purchasing company (our LLC) and an address. My home address is the registered LLC address, and I feel uneasy putting that address on there.

Am I being paranoid? Is there a way around putting my home address on the product?

The only other address I could think to put on there is the importing company we have a great relationship with. Their headquarters are in Kansas. Not sure they would go for it, and it is in another state from where our LLC is registered.

Am I overlooking any legal or business issues?

Thanks in advance. Let me know if this is the wrong sub for this. I have linked a Google images picture of a Law Label tag.

    Hiring help - 1099 or W2 Employees?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 02:49 PM PST

Hey r/smallbusiness - I am starting an estate sale business as an LLC and had a question about hiring help. I'm likely going to be doing 1 sale a month at most and will be need help only during the sale (a saturday and sunday, about 12-14 hours total/month). I will need a few people at each sale to help fill out tickets, watch certain areas of client's home and help customers. I will likely be sourcing my help from family or friends to start.

From what I have read, going the 1099 route seems like much less of a headache, but I wanted to ask if this is the correct route to go for my needs and keep it legal. Anyone with experience hiring help have any input they could share with me?

    Thanks!

Struggling to get clients for pressure washing

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 02:14 PM PST

I live in a city in Canada with about a million people. I saved up enough money to start my own power washing business. I bought professional equipment, magnetic ads for my truck, tried some service ads on Craigslist, Facebook, and google. Listed it on yelp, google, yellow pages, made social media pages. Not one call in 3 weeks. Just looking for some good advice

Why are discounts on service gift certificates a bad idea?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 01:06 PM PST

I personally know the answer to this, but not only am I busy hating my life, but I am also in desperate need of Reddit's help, so hear me out.

I help the owner run a spa that offers a number of services. However they needed sales ASAP in order to catch up on bills. Without me knowing or telling anyone, they put a 20% discount on all of our gift certificates. They were happy to sell gift cards as big as 1000 dollars at 20% off. What they do not realize is that our main feature is services such as massages, facials, stuff like that. We already had a sale on the same day for 50% off our products, so it would be incredibly stupid of anyone to use a gift card on products that make up roughly 20% of annual sales. Now, I was recently hired and asked to find why the owner, who is overbooked for clients, is suddenly hardly seeing any cash return on her work. The sales made that day in gift certificates were roughly 6000 with the sale price. I've brought this but but they refuse to listen to me, constantly interrupt, or pass the blame to something small.

I currently live in an abusive home environment I was hoping to escape once I got my paycheck. I not only work full time for this salon assisting every staff member, but I also do commission work on the side in order to make ends meet. This means I work for 18 hours a day, occasionally trying to squeeze in time for my pet who needs the attention and care while blocking her from the threats of a very violent sibling. Many of the people that work here are scared for their personal finances, which is why I took a pay cut myself in order to completely stock up the staff break room with food and give the employees a brief opportunity to get paid more for the holiday season through January. It isn't much but it's the most I can do with the authority I have. I am exhausted on a physical, emotional, and mental level to the point that I can't verbally convey just how short sighted and stupid this was for the company. I have tried explaining that this was a terrible and costly move, but the owner only continues to blame a loyal staff team that are already working as hard as they can. Will I give up my freedom for a chance to let our hair stylist feed her baby? Absolutely. But I can't do it forever.

This is where I am asking you guys for help. I plan to write an email to the owner and head accountant because enough is enough. I need someone to explain in simple, easy to understand terms, why you never ever EVER do this kind of move, numbers and all, and how they basically shot the whole damn leg and not just the foot. I know that this is my job, but I am just at such a loss for words that all I can do is cry my eyes out when I see the numbers.

For reference, a 60 minute massage with us costs 60 dollars. We offer half of that to the assigned massage therapist as commission and keep the other half.

    Small store start up

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 12:54 PM PST

I am branching out from the medical field and thinking of starting up a coffee/boutique shop. I am hoping to have plants, pottery and seasonal items in the boutique but also create a cozy spa to enjoy coffee....

In the past I have worked for small, local coffee shops so I'm familiar with the importance of where to get good coffee beans and how to make the coffee, etc, but I am beginner to anything business or boutique related... any input from fellow boutique, plant or coffee shop owners? Thank you so much!

I need to run a quick survey and need to ask 50 small/medium businesses for an input. Where to find them?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:57 AM PST

    Hello Reddit,

I'm working on a product that will help small and medium businesses get business guidance, grow and find new clients. Therefore I need to "interview" 50-100 small and medium business owners (checking product demand), and for that I prepared a really short online survey (3 minutes long, fully anonymous, no data collected, few boxes to tick, seriously nothing complicated). Link's here: https://goo.gl/forms/M2NdUsqsmDbXnyZH2

Question would be, where can I find a community I could post that survey on to get the desired number of responses?

I can't offer anything in return unfortunately, but that's why I made the survey as easy as possible, to fill up a coffee + biscuit break.

    Any advice appreciated!

    Marketing Report Template

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:34 AM PST

Hello, I'm trying to find a template for a Monthly Marketing Report that we can use to gather all our info from our marketing channels and be able to present it to the CEO. We basically want something that would have a general tab with the most important info for the month, and then other tabs that would show more detailed info such as FB, Google, LI campaign numbers, etc. Any help would be appreciated since I'm lost at how to even start this thing. Thanks in advance!

Are there better calendar systems for Wordpress?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 10:20 AM PST

    I need help.

I have a small business owner as my client and it's a pain to do their online scheduler - and I'm sure there's a better way out there!

Their business offers massages for employees at corporations.

The employee logs in on the website and books the date/time.

It then goes into the wordpress calendar and I have to manually go and copy/paste the name into a spreadsheet and send it to the therapists and client.

Is there a better scheduler out there that can integrate with wordpress?

It's a headache because everything is manual and when a client cancels/reschedules - we have to do it manually.

[Slack/Productivity] How do you utilize productivity tools (e.g. Slack) in your particular environment?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 06:59 AM PST

I have 3 full timers and 3 part timers. Everyone either talks in-person, yells across the office, or emails about things.

I'm looking for productivity tools, and better ways to communicate. The obvious choice here is Slack, but I really like to hear from others who successfully use tools like this, and learn how they actually use them on a day-to-day basis.

What was your transition period like? How did you get people to buy in? What kind of things do you now do in these programs that you find are better?

I tried Monday for a few months but just couldn't figure out how to best use it. We're a very agile team and just kind of do things as they need to be done, but I'd like a little more communication and structure.
