    A killer morning routine

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 09:26 AM PST

I've been working on a morning routine for about a month now and have had great results. I forget where I read about this. Maybe Tim Ferriss.

Before I go to bed I write a question or problem I've been working on with my business or life in general at the top of a google document. I close all other windows and put the computer in offline mode.

The next morning I wake up and brush my teeth. Then I drink a full glass of water and a cliff bar while making coffee. No phone or input at all. No checking emails. Then I do a 15 minute workout routine that is different each day. The goal here is to get the blood flowing. Id be happy to share my workouts if anyone is interested. I then read the question at the top of my google document before taking a quick hot shower. While in the shower I purposely breath very slowly and try to let all the thoughts pass through my head without focusing on any of them. I've gotten better now and a few showers I have been able to meditate through the entire thing.

As soon as I get out of the shower and get dressed I sit down at my computer with my coffee and begin to type out my thoughts. No phone and no email and no social media. Just this blank page with the question on top. My computer is offline and my phone is still in the other room.

I start thinking and a start writing. Bullet points at first. Some days I write for 20 minutes and some I write for 2 hours depending on how much time I have. Some days I have 5 or even 10 pages of thoughts and solutions or processes out on paper. I often end up revamping a certain operational process, going through pro formas, writing to do lists or diving into market research.

It is amazing how this makes you feel and the insights that come. Give this a shot! More here and my story here.

Can you have Alibaba suppliers purchase materials from other Alibaba suppliers to manufacture products?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 01:45 PM PST

Been reading a lot from this sub on Alibaba manufacturing but can't find a good answer on this question, anyone have experience?

My product consists of two parts I need combined, is it likely an Alibaba supplier would purchase the other part or allow me to ship it to them for assembly before shipping the final product to me?

What would be the best way to approach that sort of assembly?

No dev background but I’d like to try a PRM out.

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 08:32 AM PST

TLDR: no dev experience but I want to make a personal CRM, the term I've seen floating around is PRM. I know CRM very well, been in the industry for 10 years now.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to do insanely basic (and expected) functionality on a website and then also have a mobile app. Long term would be api out the rear end to capture interactions.

For now, I just want to tool around with a site, mobile app and see what is what. But not having the dev background I always get stuck on lack of backend setup. Any advise on how to make/buy services to get the ball rolling?

    Starting an online service?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 01:21 PM PST

    Hi all,

My background: I'm an airline pilot and also a flight instructor but I've wanted to create my own buisness for a while so I might as well use the skills I have right. I have been teaching myself python/django and use PS quite a bit.

So I am working on a website that allows the user to take practice tests for aviation exams to obtain licenses, and I want to also eventually expand the site to include groundschool subjects, polls, and if I can get it popular maybe even a store for products. For those of you who dont know to get a pilots license there is a flight portion and a written portion, all multiple choice, but they are tricky. Alot of flight schools dont provide a way for students to practice these tests, or if they do itll be in a limited capacity like 2 or 3 example tests. When I did my training I found practice tests were the best way to guage myself and learn.

Why I think it could work: While there are some sites ive found that do what I am thinking about, in my career I havent really heard to much of those sites, most people still go and buy the really expensive textbooks 70-100$$ for tests, which I think is ridiculous. So i am thinking of making my service alot cheaper for students to use, along with other free things like ground school subjects, articles maybe etc.

With so much free information online now I dont know how to capitalize on this. If I should give the tests free and provide some other service, or just make a popular website and advertise, or try to sell things online with it?

An example site would be Bold Method, though they do things a lttle differently than what Im thinking, and they focus on the US which I will not be doing.

    So my questions:

How does one start an online service?

How can I actually test to see if there would be interest in this?

What kinda of resources are there for all these things I want to do?

Really I have an idea and a website but I don't know how to implement it, or if its worth doing so.

    Thanks for your time!

    What would you do? (22)

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 10:12 AM PST

Hi, so let's say you have a concept in your head that you think that will success (app), and this is your first try in entrepreneurship world.

To make this thing run, there's around 5000$ of expenses, and then it can only gain revenue (if succeed). You have 3 options: 1. Look for a partner that can share those expenses with you. 2. Ask my mom to support me with my first ever project. 3. Pay this alone, but if it fails you know yourself 😂

Talking with an investor - am I vulnerable?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 11:28 AM PST

    Hey Guys,

I have a project regarding electric urban vehicle, with a patent on USPTO. Today i've talked with a potential investor that was very interested in my project, and asked a lot of very detailed technical questions, asked for SolidWorks Drawings (which I refused to share before him signing an NDA), and he asked for my patent number.

I got the feeling that he was too interested in the "boring" technical details, and im pondering if sharing the patent with him can expose me to any vulnerability from him, what kind, and what should I be concerned about from a very interested investor that seeks a way to run to production ASAP.

    Thanks guys,

    Happy New Year!

How does a uni student find a qualified CTO

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 08:17 AM PST

I'm a uni student. No work experience but I've got an idea, a vision for expansion, the design and branding locked down etc. that excites me massively. However, it comes in the form of an app, which I can't code. What would be the chance of a CTO, likely joining as part time and they would still be young (mid-20s), joining me? They would take on the coding and maintenance of the app, but new features, human side of business would be on my shoulders. I've got £15k start-up capital from boot-strapping, it's not a lot but it will get us to the MVP hopefully.

Also, how much equity should I be looking to give this person? The MVP can't be made without them but the brunt of business/money making is on me.

(PA) Won a cleaning bid, the contract seems to be fully in favor of the other company , is that normal for corporate businesses to do?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 10:14 AM PST

I won a cleaning bid for a corporate managed apartment building for an recurring project meaning I clean multiple units as needed in that building. I sent them my contract and they replied back refusing to sign unless I removed or revised my indemnification clause but they did not state in what way they were against it. My clause stated that each party has the same rights to pursue insurance claim if something should happen, limited to the extent paid in settlement /by law, it reads as fair for both parties.
They then sent me a 15 page contract which seems to place 100% liability on my company, all clauses including the words "without limitation"

Is this just how corporations write their contracts? This is my first big business bid. I am aware that it would be wise to get a lawyer for the future but right now I'm just getting my start.

I'm sketched out because I sent them my contract on Friday and was supposed to start the work today. But yesterday I still hadn't received the signed contract so I reached out to the company. At that point they forwarded me an email thread in regards to my contract and those messages were dated Friday afternoon right after I sent it over, and it also contained the 15 page contract. So, why didn't they forward me that email on Friday so that I had the weekend to look over their long contract right when they got correspondence from the bigger boss that they refused to sign my contract? Leaving me just a few hours last night to try and make a decision about whether I'm comfortable with or even fully understand the language in this contract. I'm still waiting to hear back from them to clarify why they want my indemnification clause removed and it's late in the afternoon, I'm supposed to do the work tomorrow.

Furthermore, for as detailed as the contract was, they referred to "The Work" throughout the wording, noting that the scope of The Work could be found in "Exhibit A" but Exhibit A is totally blank. I would expect more communication if there's information they feel they still need to fill in before signing. The scope of work is detailed in my bid proposal which requires a signature from their company but it wasn't mentioned at any point in their contract.

TL;DR Won a bid for major contract with corporate managed building, I think they're contract is written to screw the Provider in any scenario, is this normally how those contracts are written?

Any good YouTube channels to follow ?

Looking to start a mobile tech support

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 10:39 AM PST

I worked at a large mobile retailer for years and recently have moved on and saw a large need in my area for older/ elderly people to have someone teach them how to use basic features of the phone and answer very simple questions ( how to connect to WiFi , how to use Bluetooth etc) so many times I had customers say I just wish I didn't have to call anyone and just pay someone to come out so basically live tutorials on how to use your phone and different features and basic trouble shooting . Are there any business's out there currently doing it or something similar? Any thoughts ?

First time posting thanks for reading and any advice you have!

Hey all you lone wolfs. Get a partner. (Book Suggestion)

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 02:24 PM PST

    Damnit.

    I just finished reading:

Shenk, Joshua - Powers of Two, Finding the Essence of Innovation

The basic thesis is how almost all of the "genius" viewed as lone wolfs (Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Martin Juthan King Jr., Vincent Van Gogh, Einstein) were ACTUALLY part of a duo. There was always another hidden partner that got no limelight. So yeah, it makes an EXCELLENT CASE for the power of 2. And here I am trying to lone wolf it. There is power in synergy I suppose, that I'm not harvesting. Ugh.

So if you feel so inspired, check it out. I was blown away. Now I gotta go find a partner :)

    Cheers.

*Disclaimer, I have no vested interest in this book, just got it from the library (free) and listened to it. Figured it may help out you as many of you are prolly in the same lone boat I am.

Realistic Ways to Enter the Cannabis Industry?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 02:20 PM PST

I know that there is tons of hype and hoopla over the massively growing cannabis industry from farming, to retail, to products and services. What are some realistic ways to make headway on starting a business in this industry? I live in a state that's still illegal for medical and recreational, but i assume there are some building blocks that one could put into motion to be prepared for when legalization happens inevitably.

Question about taxes on Sole Proprietorship vs General Partnership

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 02:13 PM PST

I'm married and my husband and I file jointly on our taxes each year. I want to start a business in which I will be selling artisan bread at the local farmer's markets (no storefront plans for now). We both want to be involved in the business, so we are trying to figure out which registration makes more sense for our circumstances.

My husband won't be as involved as I am since he has his own full-time job, but I do want him to be able to help when he wants to, which is why we don't want to do a limited partnership. I'm having a really hard time sorting out the tax implications for both options. As far as I can tell, even if I choose to be an SP, he can still help out. At that point, is there a reason filing as a GP would be better?

Can someone please outline for me which taxes I'll pay for an SP vs a GP? Thanks!

TLDR: I'm starting a small baking business (farmers markets only for now) and I'm trying to figure out if a sole proprietorship or general partnership would be better. My husband wants to be able to help where he can.

    My story

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 02:07 PM PST

    Hi all entrepreneurs,

I thought I'd share my story here. Mostly because I kind of need to speak to more people who are, were or will be in the same situation. Unfortunately, amongst my circle of friends, there are few that are able to understand what I really do. Anyways, if you find something interesting, have any questions or suggestions, please let me know!

Here goes: Around 11 months ago, I started what would end up as an amazing year (I better not jinx it). It all started with a profound desire to change the way children are being taught subjects in schools. Like so many others, I felt that something just wasn't right about the way things were being done today. In school, they are told what to do, where to be, what to think, what to wear, and what to eat. Alarms and bells orchestrate their movements with farm-chattel precision, while teachers opine on topics students couldn't care less about.

After a while, I got introduced to a Norwegian-owned web development company in Brazil and their Norwegian CEO. He immediately loved the idea and allowed me to use their illustrator and designer to draw up some mock-ups. We took these, along with our idea, to a governmental organization whose objective is to help young selected entrepreneurs fund MVPs and/or prototypes.

With this financial aid, we launched our first MVP on around 400 children and received excellent feedback and multiple letters of intent from schools (which at the time was our prime segment). This later sparked two larger public grants, after having spent about four months learning more about the problem, our segment, scoping the product, and assembling key team members (two of which we found on Reddit).

Let's take a step back to help you understand what exactly we are creating. The way we see it, children need three things to flourish: competence, autonomy, and relatedness. They look for competence – the need for mastery, progression, achievement, and growth. They seek autonomy – the need for volition and freedom of control over their choices. And last but not least, they strive for relatedness – the need to feel like they matter to others, and that others matter to them.

Why is it that a child can stay focused for hours playing video games, while at the same time having a hard time concentrating for even five minutes at school? A well-designed game can engage in ways that no other medium can. Consequently, our company's guiding principle is to incorporate competence, autonomy, and relatedness through the creation of joyful and captivating game experiences. By doing this, we wish to stimulate and draw out their natural curiosity, eventually enriching children's knowledge, interests, and sense of wonder about the world.

The Norwegian market has a high willingness to pay when it comes to digital learning tools, but the current providers seem to underestimate or/and fail to understand the true problem. We don't want to be yet another company fighting in the red ocean, we wish to create a blue ocean where we disregard the competitors and instead focuses on provided value innovation for both our buyers and our company.

Right now we are 1.5 months and a half into development, and we are still feeling the waters a little bit on as to how to take it from here. We are constantly trying out small launching on children (around every 10-14 days), and our plan for the future is to interview a lot of parents as this is a game we also want to launch for the consumer market. We want to truly understand their problem and how we eventually can redefine this industry of edtech solutions. We have raised around $ 150 000 USD in mostly grants, but some private equity, too, and recently managed to scoop three full-time game designers to work with us for free for 4.5 months as a mandatory part of their Bachelor thesis. Including these three, the team today counts seven members.

I am currently working on a strategic plan for the company in order to make sure we are all pulling in the same direction and to me more focused on doing the right activities. We are also about to launch a dev log YouTube channel meant to draw early attention to the concept from kids and parents. We are paring up with famous YouTubers to help us achieve this. In addition to this, I am working on an estimated sales forecast and a plan on exactly how we are going to get the first 10, 100 and 1000 customers. We have numerous investors wanting to invest, but for now, we want to build the company's value as much as possible before we add on another owner. We expect to make our first sale in January 2020.

Being the only founder, this has been a tough burden to carry for all these months as it has not been a ride without its bumps. My brain is never really resting, constantly thinking and worrying about everything and how I can improve. I think I need to find a co-founder.

Let's see what 2019 will bring.

How do entrepreneurs get their ideas?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 01:38 PM PST

I'm 19 years old and hate the idea of working for somebody else my whole life, I've had a few ideas but nothing I'm confident enough with to invest all of my time and effort into. Can anybody suggest some ways to help me come up with more ideas? I've not got the money to keep investing into project after project and so any shred of doubt I feel is enough to stop me, I know a lot of you are going to say "just go for it" but is there anything else you can tell me to help me out?

    Branding Input Wanted

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 09:37 AM PST

Like many of my fellow entrepreneurs, I am running into quirks with my branding and marketing. I think my nerdy/obscure company name has become too great a burden in my marketing/sales efforts so I have created an alternate company name that may convey my services better and be easier to market/understand.

Lets keep this short and sweet. If your in the market for IT support or consulting, what company would be more appealing based on nothing but the name.

    CompuFluent

    OR

    LAN Titan

Thanks in advance for your input!

Good idea or waste of time?

    Posted: 27 Dec 2018 12:40 AM PST

Hello everyone! For Christmas I recently received 4 $10 Amazon gift cards. There's nothing on Amazon that really interests me, so I was gonna put these towards my business instead. I was planning on doing a giveaway where a person would need to follow my Twitter and retweet 3 tweets. Is this a good idea or a waste of time? I also have a Facebook page that I was going to do something similar on. Thank you!
