Investing in ETFs for the Long Term

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 10:59 AM PST

I have some money that I'm looking to invest. I'm thinking of putting the money into various ETFs in separate industries to keep it diverse. Like VHT, VGT, SPY, etc. Is this a good idea to just pick up, put away, and forget?

Theory behind Buffett's bets in Banks

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 01:09 PM PST

What are the main theory behind Buffett recent big bets on Banks such as JPM, USB etc. I get that they trade cheaply now but with the current yield curve inverting, aren't those stocks at risk to be crushed further down?

What will happen to the Dow if the unthinkable happens - US and China get a trade deal?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 10:40 PM PST

OK, so let's think the unthinkable, which nobody (ranging from Jamie Dimon to Cramer to Marketwatch to whoever) thinks would happen:

What would happen to the Dow if the Chinese are willing to get some (perhaps superficial) trade reforms and actually enter into a trade deal with the US? Seems like they have a long-term grand plan and might do something to appease Trump short-term, betting on the chance that he might not seek or win reelection, and they can continue their plan after he's gone. On Trump's end, he could make history (once again) with a trade deal bearing his name or at least attributable to him (whether the deal ultimately produces any real results is a different matter).

    Your thoughts?

    Big opportunities in programmatic advertising

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 07:17 AM PST

...and The Trade Desk is growing faster than anybody else. TTD says advertising will pretty much all be programmatic in the future. That connected TV is an opportunity of a size that has not been fully understood.

If he's right then it'll be a target market worth about $800 billion. Priced at $6 billion on 15x revenues TTD is not cheap. But with revenues ramping up 50% p.a. it has a lot of growth opportunity ahead of it.

This is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Stocks are not suitable investments for everyone. Please do your own research.

    Thoughts on Actively managed ETFs

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 12:58 PM PST

    Hey everyone.

Does anyone here invest in any actively-managed ETFs? And if so, what's your experience and what are your thoughts on them? Has the ETFs you've invested in been able to beat the market?

I'm thinking of investing in OUSA and ARKK - both are actively managed ETFs. I like ARKK however i'm a bit concerned with the 8% TSLA weighting in its fund holdings.

Anyone use stop loss to lock in gains? Pros and cons of this method?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 12:37 PM PST

Eg bought stock at 100. It is now 110. I think it might go up some more but dont want to lose money if bear market strikes.

Can I set a stop loss at a point below 110 but above 100 to lock in gain in event of meltdown? Eg stop loss at 105.01?

Pros and cons of this method?

I already know the following issues:

    • not work if gap down

    • stop loss not exact, eg stop loss 105.01 might be sold at 104.87 instead.

    • might be prematurely stopped out (eg stock dips to 104.99, triggering stop loss before shooting to 120 in following weeks)

    • transaction fee (de minimis, I think)

Tuesday's triple threat - bad news explained: Inverted yield curve, UK gov't in contempt, and confusion over US-China trade deal

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 12:40 AM PST

Basically when the treasury yield spread is negative between the 10 year and 3 month, we get a recession in 9 to 15 months.

I don't necessarily believe it works like that every single time, but it's a warning for sure.

This had the biggest affect IMO since the UK bad news came out around 12pm when the market indices started to drop hard & fast.

Basically there could be a hard Brexit which will end all of UK's trade deals with EU sending the UK into a recession very fast which will send the global economies into a recession.

China and the U.S. announced a truce in their trade war after the meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping on Saturday, but that quickly descended into confusion, with both sides announcing different statements on what was agreed. There's also been confusion just on the U.S. side, with the White House, Trump and his advisers making conflicting statements as to the details of a deal.

So there's uncertainty here on this deal, it's hard to feel confident about it when there's so many conflicting points, and uncertainty is very bad for the market.

2018/2019 Taxes - I feel like I am stuck in a very weird scenario (realized profit + unrealized loss = realized profit)

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 05:35 AM PST

I made a chunk of money this year and realized it. Now in this new market I've lost a bunch unrealized; however, I'm still IN THE MONEY.

The problem is I now have to pay taxes on the realized profit unless I sell my stock before the 31st to lock in the loss and save on taxes (don't want to pay taxes on imaginary money).

I do not want to sell my stock I wanted to hold it and wait for gains again but I feel like I have no choice but to sell it so that I don't have to pay taxes on imaginary profits. Is there anyway around this? As far as wash sales, I still have to wait 30 days if I sold on the 30th and bought back on the 1st even though they are different tax years?

Is my only option to sell it and buy something else?

Also if I sold it and the market spiked in the last 2 weeks of December I'd be missing out. Just confused on what to do.

Positions closed without consent, is this the norm?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 05:47 AM PST

I set up a self directed brokerage account with Td Ameritrade, to be able to use my 401k funds from another provider to trade stocks. My employer is switching 401k providers this month.

I called TD and they said they were given directive from my 401 provider to liquidate my account. All my shares were sold without any heads up.

I will be calling my provider next, when their offices open here in about a half hour. But I'm very new to all of this. Is this normal when an account gets transferred to a new provider? I'm also going to go back through my emails and double check for any communication of this from my provider. To my knowledge, there was no heads up that this would be part of the move though.

Edit: Just got off the phone with my 401 provider. The way it was explained to me is that the self directed brokerage account (TD Amer. acct.) was a service provided by my 401k provider (another company). Because my employer is switching 401k providers, the TD account was liquidated, and those funds will be moved back over into my current 401k, and will then be transfered to my company's new 401 provider.

I did ask if there was any way around this, could I leave the TD acct. setup as it's own separate account. That's when I was told that bc it's a service offered from my provider, that it is to be liquidated, account closed, and funds moved to a new account with the new 401 provider.

As mentioned, I am very green with even the investment strategy side of things, so all of this liquidating and transfering to new providers is even more foreign to me. If this just is how it is, I can live with that. Lesson learned. But, if someone with some more knowledge reads this and sees any red flags, please let me know so I can take action on it.

    Is EA a Buy?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 05:35 AM PST

Been down 44% to $81 seems like a very large discount for such a big and historically stable company. I know there is a lot of heat due to the loot box's but I think EA has already addressed this issue and are planning their future around that. I feel as if 44% is way to much for a stupid loot box issue considering EA is such a large company with big titles.

What are tricks for buying illiquid stocks?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2018 11:50 PM PST

For example, you want to buy a small volume in the daily trading value.

    For the long term.

But you see the value and the future of a company.

But you don't want the market to know your action so that

your action won't affect the pricing of the share to jump.

XPO Logistics providing last mile delivery for your online purchases

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 01:56 AM PST

The company looks set to thrive as e-commerce continues to grow a lot faster than the economy. But despite growing at around 15% for many years online purchases still only account for 10% of total retail sales.

XPO has taken full advantage. Growing organically and through acquisitions gaining economies that have provided network benefits and boosted earnings forecasts that point to 39% EPS CAGR over the next 5 years (compared to a measly 25% historic CAGR). Both growth rates compare well to the TTM PE of 19.5. True net debt is chunky at $4 billion but compared to FFO of $1 billion quite manageable.

This is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Stocks are not suitable investments for everyone. Please do your own research.
