    Rental business: Insurance and Contractors

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 07:37 PM PST

So I'm starting a surfboard and paddle board rental business and I'm 99% sure that I will need to get insurance for my business. But I've been talking to a yoga instructor friend about doing paddle board yoga lessons with my boards. So far it seems I should investigate two options for doing business with yoga instructors.

1.) Hire a yogi instructor as a contractor and do the lessons through my LLC and have the my insurance cover them.
2.) Partner with a yoga instructor who has their own insurance and credientials to teach yoga and just use my boards as just a rental with no affiliation with my business.

Just wondering if there are any other avenues or even if these avenues are the correct ones to go down. Or is one way better than the other?

What do you want to see on Web Designer’s website?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 02:45 PM PST

For anyone out there who has hired a web designer: What do you want to see on a web designer's website? 1. Do you prefer they get right to the point and tell you what you get and for how much? 2. Would you rather see their portfolio quickly? 3. Do you care to see any of the marketing fluff? 4. Other?

I want to design mine to attract the most prospects. Any help from the community out there is much appreciated!

    Replacements for QuickBooks (inventory, accounting)

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 07:18 AM PST

QuickBooks is being very garbage to us, even though we've upgraded hardware and tried many different things. I'm hoping to learn what others are using or perhaps be pointed in the right direction.

Things we're not fond of: * Can't mass edit customer information * Can't have multiple invoices/SOs/other open * Cannot copy/paste most things * Cannot CTRL + F * No CRM capability

There's more, but that's our focus.

QB also cannot handle our 9-10 users being in it at the same time and the fact that we have so much information in it (10k+ customers, 10k+ items). We need something that can handle its load better.

This is making our infrastructure suffer and we'd like to get it resolved for growth in the long run. We're fine with having two different programs that can talk to each other, but would like an all-in-one.

    Thanks guys!

Edit: want to add the "refreshing the list" that takes 5 min to complete most of the time.

    Restarting my Auto Detailing business?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 02:51 AM PST

Hello everyone, I'm new to this subreddit and haven't read many posts here, so this may be a bit out of the ordinary.

I'm 20 years old and in September of 2017 I started an auto detailing business while also working part time at another business. It was going well and I had clients up until I stopped in July of 2018. In that time, I ultimately burnt myself out, didn't feel like I was succeeding, and decided I didn't want to do it anymore. I stopped answering phone calls, texts, emails and told people who asked that I was no longer detailing.

But now I'm thinking about how much I miss it and want to keep doing it again. I felt fulfilled after doing a vehicle and seeing how much they can turn around. I want to succeed. If I get back into it, I want to do it in a way that I won't feel burnt out so easily or feel like it's not worth it.

My biggest fear is regarding my past clients that I have turned down, or the ones whose calls I haven't answered. I feel like a terrible person for turning them down or ignoring them, and I'm afraid that if I suddenly pop back up, I will be looked down upon. I worked hard to network and get my name out there, and I'm afraid that the networking will backfire on me now that I'm in this situation.

If I were to start doing it again, I already have everything I need. Business cards, pamphlets, website/domain, social media pages (deactivated but there), equipment, etc. It'd be very easy to get back into it in that sense, but I don't know how I would approach everything by returning to the scene.

    Here are my main questions:
    1. Am I overthinking the past clients/ignored phone calls thing? Should I be scared of that?
    2. What approaches can I take when returning to social media? I'm not really sure how to explain to everyone what happened as it's more so just a personal struggle more than anything. My life has changed so much in the last few years and I don't know where I want to go in life yet 100%.
    3. Any suggestions in general?

Mother taking ownership of a small business and never had experience in owning a business. POS Question.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 09:00 AM PST

As you read in the title my Mother is taking ownership of a local lawn mower shop on the 8th of January. We are looking for a POS system since the previous one is outdated (can't be transferred). Average transactions are anywhere from $150-$300, but of course there will be some smaller than that. I'm getting a lot of information from our bank, Wells Fargo, on different POS systems. They recommend the Clover system, but I usually see systems like that in smaller shops with lower average transactions ($5-$10). We have our eye on the FD 130 just because it seems to be a cheap option. Since we have no experience in this I'm looking for any recommendations. Thank you.

E: I'm sorry if any of this is confusing, it is all very confusing to me.

Quoting a client against a competing quote

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 08:20 AM PST

I have a client who has used me in the past for different projects and has asked me to quote on a new project. The client let me know that they did receive another estimate for the job and let me know what that is so that I can try and match it or beat it.

Problem I have is that the price I need to match is way below my costs - let alone what I would quote. I am kind of torn now because if I do quote it would be about 50-60% more than what the price to beat is but I also don't want to loose this client for future projects. I am pretty sure either the the other company is not quoting properly or they were given different parameters for the project than I was.

Would you quote the client anyway and let them know, although there is no way you can beat that estimate you wanted to at least quote. Or let the client know that there is no way you can beat that estimate. That if they put that quote in writing and includes everything they need and is based on the same parameters then they should go for it - and not quote them.

Are single-use plastic straws that harmful?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 01:12 AM PST

    Hi all,

I was just wondering if small businesses, or people in general, would be interested in straws made from other materials. Apparently, plastic straws are quite harmful to the environment. From a marketing/PR/business perspective, what do you think would be the deciding factors in making the switch?

I made a simple website for that, hope I don't get too downvoted for shamelessly plugging my website here. I was just wondering if any of you small business owners mind giving me some feedback on the website, or just sharing your own experience with non-plastic straws; cost-efficiency, durability, reliability... Well pretty much anything would be helpful.

    Thanks a lot!

    Here's the plug : https://yourstrawguy.com/

Side Hustle turned into a Full-time gig, need advice on taking the next step.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 05:44 AM PST

    Hi r/smallbusiness,

My wife and I run a wedding videography business that started as a side hustle to paid off debt (over $100k in student loans). In 2 1/2 years, we accomplished our goal and our business continues to grow. She went full-time last September and I'm close to leaving my contracted position as video editor to work FT for our business.

Our issue (although a good one) is that we can no longer book weddings in 2019 since we have reached our limit of 25. After 25 weddings, it becomes a bit overwhelming. We only take a limited number of weddings to ensure that we are able to give our full energy and attention to every film we create. In addition, I manage 3 rental units as well but that's a whole other post.

Question for you all is: How should we take the next step? The inquiries continue to roll in but we have to turn them all down, since reaching 25 weddings, we must have received 150 inquiries that we had to decline. I know training someone seems like the obvious answer but I'm afraid this will take a lot of time and the person may run off and start their own business. Outsourcing could be an option but how do we explain to the couple we aren't the ones shooting/editing. Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

Sole-proprietor service biz getting absorbed by main contractor/client. Transition advice needed.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 01:58 PM PST

In a way, this is the end of my small business. But in another way, it's the beginning of my new career.

I started my service business about 5 years ago, and it's been great: I get to work my own hours, I get to be hands-on with clients, I'm on the road and seeing new places and I know all the best lunch spots in a thirty-mile radius. But I'm not really a lone-wolf type of guy. I found a company near me who is so busy they needed my help, and after a couple years of them hiring me as an independent contractor they want to fold me into their business as their Chief Operating Officer. I'm thrilled TBH, since I get to take on the bigger jobs I've always wanted and I have the infrastructure at my disposal now to provide more value to my clients. (and the job security ain't bad neither)

However I don't know how to transition my clients to this new company in a seamless way that lets me retain the maximum amount. The new company charges more, because they offer more and can do more. But I'm on a first-name basis with lots of my clients and I suppose I kind of feel like I'm letting them down in a way.

Do any of you good people have experience with this sort of thing?

UPC codes for our small business

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 11:53 AM PST

Hey /r/smallbusiness! I'm currently researching how to register UPC codes for our company, and I'm only a bit intimidated. We have around >100 unique products that we manufacture, and our distributors have finally requested that we implement a UPC code for each of our products.

I'm curious if there's anything more to the process than applying for a prefix and then receiving our codes? Do we have to register each individual product with the GS1 website? Also, can we design our packaging (most likely hang tags) in house, then use a printing company to supply our tags with the provided UPC codes?

Ideally, I'd like to hear your experiences with going through this process and how this can be streamlined, or perhaps any warnings and mistakes you have made and learned from.

Content Creation and Social Media Growth for Lawyers/MedSpas/Etc

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 07:09 PM PST

Hey all. So currently i do social media for a niche clinic. They pay me $1200 a month and i do professional content creation, like photos and videos on location, and publish it to their 3 social medias. I also do a lot of engagement on them, growing them faster but organically. FB/ig/twitter.

I use a local photographer (we don't do super professional lighting and studio setup stuff, but expensive equipment and edits from pictures/videos/timelapses, etc around the office)

It's 48 total posts across all 3 per month. Plus i manage their website when they want changes and stuff. We do videos of different processes, different patients/clients in the office, testimonials, B roll type stuff, holiday stuff, etc.

Do you think others would be interested in this? Like say a medspa or salon or lawyer? I think there is value in bringing more transparency and branding to these types of businesses. Like a lawyer that has a facebook full of good reviews, testimonials, activity, updates, etc would gain a lot of trust from me when researching who to use, personally.

I'm trying to guage if it's worth it to create a really professional proposal with growth statstics and a case study and samples of work and reach out to other businesses and offer similar/same service of complete social media management, growth, engagement, and high quality content creation/storytelling.

    What do you guys think?

Anyone dealing with a foreign language workforce?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 01:07 PM PST

I'm pursuing the purchase of a small business. Everything looks good so far in terms of due diligence. The operations, market potential, price, etc. all fit with what I've been looking for. But one big issue I'm concerned with is the language barrier due to the fact that the current staff is overwhelmingly made up of (legal) Mexican immigrants. My Spanish is high school level, at best.

The current owner has assured my that this won't be much of an issue, as the logistics of the business are pretty straightforward and rely on a relatively small set of business vocabulary. However, the business is currently run by speaking to the staff mostly in Spanish, with obviously English for customers, as the business is located in the US. I expect the basic "go here, do this" day-to-day sort of things won't be terribly hard to learn, but bigger issues, such as dealing with HR violations, hiring/firing, and ensuring employee satisfaction seem quite a bit less surmountable to me. I would also point out that some of the staff are bilingual and can help as translators. Staff, for the most part, don't need to interact with customers much, so that is not an issue.

I know this isn't a terribly uncommon situation, as a lot of restaurants or construction companies in this area will have a lot of non-english speakers on the team, but I am still concerned about being able to navigate the issue successfully. Has anyone dealt with a language barrier in your business? If so, can you share your experiences?

Scheduling posts to Google My Business?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 07:27 AM PST

Hey everyone, I am the founder of a social media scheduling tool.

We are considering adding the ability to schedule posts to Google My Business.

Is that something worth our time and effort?

    Trying to figure out if
    A) Business owners actually post on GMB, and
    B) if the ability to schedule posts out weeks in advance would be beneficial, including posts that automatically repeat every week, so that when the posts expire after 7 days, you dont have to manually go in and post something again and again.

My first thoughts are having a donation option, is there any good ideas that anyone else has? How effective are ads with things like ad-block?
