    Huge Car Insurance Blunder

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 10:30 PM PST

Long story short: I was recently at fault in an auto accident. I carelessly forgot to pay my insurance bill on time (it was 4 days late) and I totaled someone else's car while I was uninsured. The other driver has Progressive uninsured motorist coverage.

So any guidance here for my plight would be most welcome:

    1) Progressive has sent me an affidavit to notarize stating I was uninsured at the time. Should I do this? Or ignore?

    2) I am guessing the value of the vehicle I totaled is in the neighborhood of $15k. They have not yet sent me demand for payment. Any suggestions on negotiating this when I receive it? How to proceed? I have a decent salary, home, etc. but $15k would wipe out my savings.

Any guidance would be appreciated. This is truly a careless mistake and I feel like I'm about to learn my lesson.

    Nationwide Insurance "Lifetime Warranty"

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 11:45 PM PST

I was looking at a car's service history when I ran across this:

INSTALLED AFTER MARKET ENGINE THAT CARRIES A LIFETIME WARRANTY THRU NATION WIDE INSURANCE PARTS AND LABOR, CLAIM#966...

Is this warranty worth a damn? Where can I find the terms and conditions? Is this warranty transferrable? If I buy this car and at 400k miles, the engine blows up and it's not my fault, will I be covered under the "lifetime warranty"?

Just started a great new career path with a large insurance company, but I have ZERO experience in insurance. I’m excited for the challenge and can be a very fast learner; but does anyone have any good yet simple resources so I can begin to better understand the ways insurance works?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 03:06 AM PST

Hi all, I am a nurse by trade with a past work experience of over 10 years of bedside nursing and hospital risk management with progressive management experience. I had an awesome interview with a leader (now my boss) for a very large and successful insurance company which happens to cover (amongst many types of facilities and government agencies), employee injuries and workers comp claims for hospitals and healthcare facilities. This is the field for which I was hired as a senior risk control specialist. I understand I will be working with clients (hospitals- in my case) to guide them in implementing risk reduction strategies to protect employees from harm and minimize workers compensation claims.

I got some resources from some coworkers I plan to dive into as well as various resources on our company's intranet. But I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good ELI5 sources I can review just so I can kind of get a cursory understanding of the general workings of the ways insurance works and make a profits? I know it's a complicated concept with many layers and asking for an ELI5 is a big ask but I thought I'd take a stab since it seems there are so many experts in this sub!

    Thanks in advance!!

    Thanks in advance!! Truly!

Hail damage to siding and possibly the roof, should I file a claim?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2018 02:42 AM PST

I know it sounds like an obvious 'yes dummy, file the claim' but I have some special circumstances and I don't want to get dropped or have my rates triple in price.

First off, I don't own the homes (2 homes, 1 lot, also detached garage, side note: there are 2 additional garages attached to one house, its so weird) my mom owns the property. My family just rents one of the houses from her, so this is her claim to file but she/we really could use the money from it for all the repairs these homes need. Also relevant, she purchased this property in October this year.

So, there are 2 homes on my lot (total sq. ft. about 2,000) and a detached garage (576 sq. ft.). My mom (she from her-on-out) bought this property in October and the first lender ended up falling through because the roof on one of the homes was too old (it actually has a flat roof, still intact, with a gabble roof over it). So, she found another lender and everything went through. We had a hail storm about a month ago, I didn't notice any damage until 2 weeks later on the siding on the garage (the homes are both brick and block so no damage there). The siding on the garage has several punctures in it to where about an 1x1 inch section was broken and you can see the insulation behind it. There are several punctures on the siding on 2 sides and the distance between punctures is about 5 ft, but its consistent on those 2 sides.

Due to the age of the roofs (6+ years) I'm guessing some adjusters would claim damage and some wouldn't, I'm not sure which way they would lean.

Since she has only had the policy for 2 months would filing a claim already make her rates skyrocket, or would it be worth filing a claim for the siding and hope the roofs also get covered? We had already planned on re-roofing one home this coming summer (we are a family of roofers) so if we could get money for that it would really help out in fixing up the second home (it needs a ton of work and my brother and I have already dropped about $5k in to it and we literally can't afford anymore debt on this). And if they will pay for siding on the garage it is similar in size to the second home which desperately needs siding, so we could use the money to replace the garage's towards installing siding on the second home. I know this all sounds shady but I am out of options and we desperately need the money, but we don't have many options if we get dropped from her current insurer or if they increase her rates drastically it might cause some financial issues down the road. Any advice is welcome.

I know my mom shouldn't have bought this property and it's not my responsibility to figure out all the finances and everything, so please don't provide information on how I shouldn't worry about it because it isn't actually my problem. I know I shouldn't put my family in debt to fix a property my mother bought (despite my advice) but this is where I am now and I'm trying to make the best of it. If I can make her second house an acceptable living space by adding some siding and getting some extra funds I need for other basic essentials, that would ease 75% of my daily stress.

Tldr; 2 homes and detached garage on one lot, garage is the only one with siding, siding was visibly damaged by hail storm a month ago and roofs may have been damaged (idk how they assess that), we are replacing one roof ourselves in the summer anyways. Would it be worth filing a claim to get the money to put siding on the house that needs it and to get money towards replacing the roof which we would do ourselves and the extra money can go towards fixing up the second home (a super rundown house) which we desperately need because it's already sending us in to debt.

    Drug prices in hospital bill

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 08:12 PM PST

So I got itemized bill for my wife's pregnancy hospitalization. I see drug prices are too high.. for example Tylenol they charged $6 per pill and she was taking 4 pills per day. Similarly other drugs price also seems to be inflated. Can I challenge this? What I can argue on this?

    Deductibility of health ins premiums?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 06:27 PM PST

So I'm self employed. My husband has an employer who covers his health insurance premiums 100%, which is great, but spouses are covered 0%. Since the plan he has is pretty decent, with no option to downgrade (only upgrade), it would have been close to $500/month to add me. YIKES. I opted to enroll in a minimum coverage plan thru Covered CA for $200/mo rather than take the spouse coverage since we have adequate savings to cover the out of pocket costs up to the $8k deductible if worst comes to worst.

My question is, and maybe this is the wrong sub to ask, are the premiums I pay tax deductible since I'm self employed? My initial inclination is no, since I had available coverage thru a spouse's employer, but the premiums would have been 8% of our combined gross monthly income with no option to get anything less than that.

    Unattended vehicle car insurance question

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 06:07 PM PST

Hey everyone, have a quick question for everyone.

My girlfriend grazed a railing on a parked UPS truck while leaving a parking garage. She didn't see damage on the railing on the truck so she left the garage as she was late for work.

There is a dent and some scratches on the back passengers side door.

    1. She is freaking out now about being jailed or loosing her license. I think she freaked out in the moment and left without leaving a note.

    2. We have gotten some estimates for the repair for her car, and shops are asking $1800 for it as the door panel has to be cut and replaced. Along with painting of the door and all adjacent surfaces. If she were to claim on her insurance, what should she tell them? She's afraid that if she tells them about the truck they would report her for criminal liability.

    3. Do you know if talking to an insurance agent about a claim can raise rates. For example if she talks to her State Farm agent, and then decides to pay out of pocket for the repairs. Can they still raise her rates for being a higher risk driver?

    Thanks for the help!

Totaled my car but it was a lease?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 06:00 PM PST

Ok so I totaled my car 2 nights ago and it was a leased car. Theres only 1 month left on it though which isnt a big deal if I have to pay the 1 month thats left. I also have GAP insurance I believe.

I have to get a new car, as soon as possible would be preferred since I cant get a rental car cause the whole city is out until after Christmas. I also have full coverage auto insurance. My main question is do I still get a payout check in the mail from the insurance or do I basically just get nothing since its a lease? Cause if I do get a check I have to wait for it to get the new car but if I dont Im just gonna try getting one tomorrow.

Dental damage after car accident- disabled

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 08:22 AM PST

I was in a pretty nasty car accident three days ago. I apologize for anything unclear since this has pretty much ruined my life. Though my own stupidity I wasn't covered for collision although I did have high limit medical, liability and UI protection from State Farm. I suspect we will both be found equally at fault for the accident. I was taken by ambulance to the ER to get checked out with no major injuries. It has become apparent that I have several painfully chipped and possibly a cracked tooth from the air bag. It is making it difficult to talk or eat. I have Medicare A & B because of my disability. I had requested Medicaid as well but it has not yet come though. I am extremely low income. I don't even have a credit card and don't qualify for most financing due to low income and poor credit from prior medical incidents. Most dentists want payment upfront and for me to seek reimbursement and I literally can not. Is there any hope of getting this fixed?

Rear end Collision. Repairs with insurance. Have questions.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 07:23 PM PST

Had a rear end collision last week. Took the car to collision repair shop and got it evaluation for repairs at 12k from insurance. Car before accident was valued at 20k on kbb and I have 17k loan. I'm guessing car after repair would be having rebuilt title. Is it worth asking the insurance to make it a total loss considering the depreciation after the repairs?

Will my uninsured GF have coverage if she drives my rental?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 12:54 PM PST

Disclaimer: Please spare any disparaging remarks about insurance companies, or the situation I am presenting.

I have my own personal insurance, my girlfriend does not. She is also NOT listed as a named insured or operator on my personal auto policy. I have an insurance rental car (through Enterprise) in my possession and my car is in the shop after a fender bender last week. The Enterprise employee told me that if I decide to add my girlfriend to my rental contract my auto policy coverage extends to her. As someone who works in insurance this doesn't add up to me. SO, my situational question is:

My girlfriend is driving my rental car, with her being on the rental contract, and she does not have her own auto insurance. If she gets into an accident, will my auto insurance cover that accident?

Edit: We live in Colorado and we live together. I am insured with Progressive.

Fender bender with parked car (at fault). Notify insurance?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 06:04 PM PST

I backed into a street parked car (corner to corner) last night. No known witnesses as it was fairly late on a quiet, poorly lit street. Left a note and the guy reached out this morning. He was very amicable/thankful for the note and we tentatively agreed to work it out on our own, though I clarified that I didn't want to spend more than $500 out of pocket. (Also didn't literally admit fault, but he was legally parked.)

So now I'm left with two questions:

    1. I always assumed in this situation, I'd let him do any filing (third party or otherwise) if we weren't able to work it out, but now I'm reading on some sites that I should submit notice to my agent of the accident even though not submitting a claim in order to improve my standing if he does?

    2. Does my $500 offer seem reasonable to avoid a claim? (also, obviously I'm asking proof of cost regardless)

    Registration address versus garaging address.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 02:04 PM PST

I currently carry a state farm auto policy in NYS. I live in the NYC suburbs in my own apartment where the vehicle is currently insured and registered. In the near future, I will be moving to NYC, and I plan to have my car parked at my parents' house in the suburbs.

When I move, I need to register the car to my new address in the city, despite the fact that for the time being, the car will be parked 30 miles away in the suburbs. I plan to add my parents to the policy so they can occasionally drive the car, however it will not be either of their primary vehicles.

Is state farm going to base my rates on the fact that I live in the city, where it is much more expensive to insure a car, or as if it's parked/garaged in the suburbs, driven a few times a month by my parents who both have good driving records?

Is this an underwriting policy that differs from insurer to insurer, and if so, which ones will determine my rates based upon the car collecting a lot of dust in a quiet suburb versus being driven around the crowded corners of Manhattan?

    Car accident with uninsured motorist.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 05:39 PM PST

So, I got rear ended by another vehicle (a GMC truck) which is uninsured motorist. But, my insurance doesn't have the uninsured motorist coverage ( I removed it in order to lower down the cost ), and that prevent me to make a hit and run claim. We did trade information, so I got the driver's DL, the insurance that insured another vehicle that he own (the Ford Explorer) and the licsence plate of the vehicle that hit us, but no police report, I felt very silly for not calling the police to witness the accident and to make a report. Still, I got most of the essential information of the driver. What should I do to claim the damage .

Looking for advice on auto insurance valuations of a total loss vehicle where I was not at fault.

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 03:45 PM PST

I got into a collision recently where I was not at fault and my car was totaled. All involved were okay, thankfully. Insurance has deemed my car a total loss and has determined the fair market value of my vehicle to be $31.5k

When I bought my (now totaled) car (almost 9 months ago) I paid the cash value of $34k, sales tax of $2k, and title fees of about $400. The grand total came out to be $36.4k

I have since bought a new car and paid about 2k in total closing costs (sales tax and title fees). My question is, shouldn't the insurance company cover the cost of (one of the car's) closing costs? I was not at fault in the wreck and don't see why I'm responsible for paying sales tax and title fees twice? Can somebody help me understand why they aren't included in the initial valuation by my insurance coverage?

I have Progressive insurance and am located in Houston, TX if that's helpful.

    Thanks y'all, cheers!

Question about borrowing friends car for 3 months

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 11:37 AM PST

Hi I'm 23 and will be borrowing my friends car while she is away for a few months. She is on her parents insurance and doesn't want to add my name to their insurance, so instead, she is planning to "sell" me the car by signing over the title to me and then I can register it under my name and get insurance. I do not currently have car insurance of any kind but my parents do. I'm wondering if I should be getting a temporary insurance plan or if I could add the car to my parents plan. what is the best way of going about this? Also I plan on buying my own car before giving up the one I am borrowing, so i will need car insurance past this temporary period, if that changes anything.

Should you talk to the other person's car insurance adjuster?

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 01:58 PM PST

I was in an accident and I called my insurance and the other person's insurance and reported the incident.

The other person's insurance company's adjuster called me and started asking me questions. I said something, then all of a sudden he wants to record me. I assumed he was going to use something against me so I refrained from saying anymore and hung up right away. Did I do the right thing? Am I legally supposed to talk to them? I know I'm not at fault, but I know that insurance companies are looking for little things to go against me.

Cheapest way for me to get insurance? (IL, 19 Male, 1 prior accident/ticket)

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 01:29 PM PST

I'm a 19 year old male in Illinois trying to find insurance. I'm buying my first vehicle tomorrow (a 98 4 Cyl Ford Ranger XL Flairside) for $250. The cheapest quotes I'm getting are around $225 and that's for JUST state minimum and this seems pretty high. I've had my license since May. I don't have any major issues on my record except a ticket for an improper turn on red in May in which I scratched (literally scratched) another car as we merged into each other). I have another ticket from a month ago but I received court supervision so this shouldn't be affecting me (Speeding 89 in a 70, cop actually marked it down because I was honest in that I had no good reason to be doing that speed. I was doing closer to 100. I know I need to stop driving like a F1 driver)

This seems very high as the average 19 year old supposedly pays anywhere from 1200 to 1600 a year, and this is close to 2400. I'm not super worried about full coverage, the truck isn't worth much.

Am I looking in the wrong place or something?

EDIT: Before anyone asks the obvious, I was in a relatives vehicle with the ticket that was convicted, and a company vehicle on the court supervision one.

I have a mathematics degree (graduated this year) with one intro actuary exam passed (Exam FM). One year of technical IT and two years of retails sales exp.

    Vintage Posters

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 09:08 AM PST

We are looking at doing an inventory of our home to make sure our property coverage is adequate and it dawned on me that we may have a tad bit of an issue in regards to various WWI and WWII posters we have in the home. I'm curious of:

    1. Would/could these fall under artwork?
    2. If it does, would it be better to get a rider through my insurer for the home or look towards some other company that specializes like Collectibles Insurance Services?

    First time getting drug tested

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 08:55 AM PST

I'm going to cut to the chase. I have been on ADHD medicine for about 14/15 years now. I have not once been required to provide a UA (urine analysis). My psychiatrist is fairly new as we've only seen one another about 2-3 times and she's kind of a bitch.

I had to get clean from marijuana as I ran into a bit of trouble. I'm currently clean, as I drug test myself. However, I did call my insurance company and asked them if they cover Drug testing for marijuana at my primary doctors office.

I'm not sure if my insurance company might've contacted my current psychiatrist and made her suspicious about me using drugs.

    Can anybody help?

If I go back to my old psychiatrist would he require a UA of me as well?

I recently upgraded my insurance policy but stuck with the same insurance company unfortunately.

    Rate hike after at-fault accident

    Posted: 20 Dec 2018 12:05 PM PST

I was involved in an at-fault with some bodily injury about 8 months ago. I just recently received my new policy from Geico, and while I was completely expecting a decent rate increase the amount seems absurd. My monthly bill went from $166 per month(with pretty high coverage), all the way up to $444 per month with the same coverage, even after lowering the coverage to less than half we were only able to knock off $40 from the policy per month. I am trying to understand if this high of rate hike is normal? I've been with Geico about 7 years, with a clean driving record, and nothing more than a handful of roadside assistance claims over those seven years. This just seems that I'm being given the same rate as people with DUIs, and fatalities, it just doesn't make sense. I am in CA if that helps at all.
