We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

NASDAQ:EA price falling 44% from July, $144 to just $81 as more government regulators move to regulate lootboxes

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 04:07 AM PST

On 27 November 2018, the Australian Parliament has concluded a detailed report with detailed proposal including classify games including loot boxes as gambling. [1]

After repeated delayed release and confirmed under-performance of EA's latest releases Star Wars: Battlefront II and Battlefield V, compounded with increasing likelihood of complete lootbox bans, which accounts for $1.3 bn of EA's annual earning, will be facing complete bans similar to what it has faced in Belgium. Should the ongoing regulations pass worldwide, including proposed regulations in the US senate, EA will be facing approximately $0.8 bn losses in earnings. [2]

Other game publishers relying heavily on micro-transactions have also been impacted by the possibility of a rolling regulation or possible suspension.

    Yields and bear markets

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 03:16 AM PST

When the yields are inverted people say that we're heading to a bear market but isn't this timing the market? And if each time the yeilds invert itself won't everyone be rich in knowing what will happen next? Forgive my ignorant, it is what I have been reading here. If there's anything more to add to this please teach me. And also where do you find this information on yields?

Time to board the short bus?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 02:58 AM PST

Given the look of the markets today and how the 10yr/2yr spread is looking I thinking of finally pulling the trigger and switching from widespread "buy" mode to 50% "short" mode.

Specifically looking at some of the heavyweight tech stocks, airlines and oil stocks.

Any tips for shorting? The main reason I've avoided it so far is that I know there's money to be made shorting, but the markets have generally gone up over time so it feels like if you had a strategy of widespread shorting you would be watching your account dwindle as the markets continued to gain and gain over the past 10years.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2018 03:32 AM PST

I am considering to invest in an ETP, which backed by real assets. I wonder what would happen if the ETP product manager goes bankrupt.

As I am very much new in investment, it is hard to grasp the idea of some financial products.

Thank you for the help in advance.

Can any recommend a source for looking up dividend data for companies earlier than the 1970s. Yahoo finance has data from 1970s onwards.

    Many thanks!

Other than autistic tendie printers (put options) what are a few ways to invest into an economic downturn? Is the best option to just save cash and wait for the market to bottom out or what?

Oil market not following laws of supply and demand.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 11:55 AM PST

Hi all, I'm currently doing an essay on movements in the oil industry and through looking at data, world prices per barrel increased from Jan 18 to October 18.

Why is this? When there has been more of an increase in supply into the market than demand.

Which with laws of supply and demand, when supply outstrips demand there shoud be an decrease in price, however this isn't the case hence if anyone could explain why this would be majorly beneficial to me.

Thank you in advance for the replies.

Im curious to see why ING has had such a poor performance over the year, they are -35.37% YTD. They are having constant positive earnings throughout the year however.

    Transfer IRA from TD Ameritrade

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 10:02 PM PST

I have a Traditional IRA with TD with only a nominal amount of money. I dislike the UI and don't plan on adding anything further. However I just got a job with the federal government and believe I can transfer a Traditional IRA into my new TSP which would be great.

The TDA full transfer fee is $75, which is actually a pretty large percentage of what I have in there. This doesn't seem worth it. However you can apparently do PARTIAL transfers for free. AND I see nothing about minimum balances listed (you can probably see where I'm going with this).

Am I reading this right? This seems to me a GAPING loophole to avoid such a fee.

    overseas gold vault storage

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 01:21 PM PST

NOTE: This is not a discussion about the investment viability of gold in general.

There are a number of organizations that provide overseas golf vault services - Perth Mint, Hard Asset Alliance, Goldmoney, BullionVault, just to name a few. I think this is a great idea to hedge system economic risk in any particular country, but it seems like a business ripe for fraud. Does anyone have any concrete experience with this? Is there any organization that can be trusted?

What is your favorite Fidelity fund?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2018 08:51 PM PST

Personally, I've been investing solely in FZROX, which is their total stock market index fund. It has no expense ratio. I'm looking to add a small amount of bonds or other more stable assets to my portfolio. I've heard good and bad things about their Fidelity Balanced Fund. What is your go-to index or mutual fund?
