Around the water cooler my first week

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 06:21 AM PST

So I started working at a new firm on Monday. I actually went from Big 4 tax to a local firm and working part-time since I have kids. Joining this local firm wasn't about money but more like a long term strategy if I ever want to start my own firm in the future. The partner actually gave me an office and the work seems relatively easy to me and they've already been super impressed with my Excel skills.

Anyways, for the past two days, the receptionist has been stopping me and asking questions about random things and I have been talking longer than I normally would since I'm new. On the second day, we've been talking for about 15 minutes, there was a situation where two managers came to the area where we were talking and started to interact with the receptionist to break up our conversation. I was relieved at first because she kept on asking me questions and I didn't want to be rude and honestly, I never planned on stopping by and talking, I just said good morning and she kept on asking questions.

I walked into my office and I was maybe there for 1 minute when the other manager came in and told me that we don't chitchat in the morning here. When you come in, go straight to your office and it's been a little chatty in the office this week. I don't know why but I kind of felt offended. It's my first week here and I've seen people chitchatting around the office. The same manager came into my office again 15 mins later apologized and said that the receptionist has a habit of talking and it wasn't my fault and to avoid her.

During the day, I stayed in my office and did work that was asked from me. I don't know if the partner heard what happened, but he was joking about chitchatting and I just gave him an awkward smile and didn't talk openly as I normally do.

I guess the manager didn't want me to get into the habit of talking but now I feel like I have to go on hermit mode and just come in, do my work, and leave. I thought overall it was a little premature and petty to say something to me since it's my first week and the whole office freaking chitchats. Now I feel like someone is watching me every time I have a conversation outside of work.

I kind of feel sad that the honeymoon period is already over at my new job. I wanted to know what you guys think.

Does this sub exaggerate B4 busy season?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 09:07 PM PST

I've read a couple of comments suggesting that most of the content in this sub regarding Work-Life balance in B4 is not very reflective of reality, with the exception of FSO and most tax pros

I know that some of you may have regular busy season commitments in addition to unconventional year end clients, effectively creating 1.5-2 busy seasons. However, I assume that the overwhelming majority of B4 Auditors cap out at 70 hours a week for 3-4 months and return to a cap of 50 during the remaining 8-9 months.

How wrong is my assumption? And how accurate does r/Accounting protray B4 demands?

Something to consider: I don't want a family like many of you, so B4 hours may ultimately be more bearable for me.

How much do you chit chat at work?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 08:46 AM PST

I saw a post here about someone getting disciplined for talking, and have had a similar experience. I talk for roughly 15-30 min a day, and got sent to my boss for disciplinary action. All my work was handed in on time, but we have a 0 tolerance policy for talking. Want to see what other firms are like, how much do you chit chat?

Short-Payment situation is out of control

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 05:25 PM PST

I've recently become the accounts receivable supervisor of my company. If there's an open balance on our accounts receivable account, I answer to it. Past-Due invoices are easy to deal with, but I've come to realize that most of my time is taken up by addressing open balances due to short-payments, that is, a customer has an invoice that's, let's say, $1000, but they only pay $900, leaving a $100 open balance on that invoice. We are talking about 20% of all sale revenue needing to be adjusted because the ones generating the invoices f***k the closing, rate items incorrectly, etc.

The worst part is that each short-payment takes as long as the other to resolve, no matter the amount! To make matters worse, the only people who can authorize an adjustment and allow me to do a credit memo against the short-payment are the same people doing the closing! They are always busy and I have to remind them at least 4 or 5 times to do the adjustments a week, and I even have to remember to remind them a second, third, fourth time, which is a headache...Once I have the authorization to make the adjustment, I generate a credit memo in QuickBooks and finito.

What should I do in order to encourage the ones generating invoices to 1)be more careful with invoicing correct amounts so a short-payment doesn't happen in the first place and 2)get them to issue the authorization to adjust the amounts without having to remind them a thousand time? I have a good relationship with the people who do the closings, and I don't want to spoil it by, say, sending them a second reminder and copying in the office manager.

[Canada] Why should I stay away from accounting?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 05:11 PM PST

I've been considereing what program I'd take for months...

I've considered truck driving, being an airline pilot, software engineer, nurse, x ray technician, train conductor, chemist, etc...

accounting seems like the best because...

-get a lot of choice on what city you get to live in

-it's a clean, desk job and white collar.... no sweating

-pay goes up, and after a few years it's decent pay

-you get a university degree so there's a sense of accomplishment

-there is job security and a lot of jobs

-it's interesting enough (I'm passionate about chocolate cake and watching movies, but work is work)

So... at this point I'm 99% sure I'm going into accounting...

anything that should hold be back and reconsider?

I think I picked the wrong field

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 06:01 PM PST

Starting as a First Year Audit Associate at a Top 10 firm in Jan (no intern experience). I am extremely introverted. The Auditors I met are all super sociable and cheery and I have to try real hard to keep up with them. It's exhausting. I don't hate traveling but I'm not looking forward to constantly moving to different sites. I'd prefer a more stable office experience. Auditors don't have their own desks at the office because they aren't going to be there often.

I picked Audit because of its better exit opportunities and flexibility in jobs, but I think my personality is better suited for Tax. I know I should at least wait until I start before making that judgement...But I'm scared I made the wrong choice.

[CAN] Is it worth getting a MBA after CPA?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 11:07 AM PST

I passed CFE recently, hoping to get designated late next year. Currently work in public, with long term goals of going into industry. Just wondering if a MBA would accelerate my accounting career in industry? I'm 22, so want to get all the studying out of the way in my 20's. I'm also open to suggestions for other useful degrees/designations. Thanks.

    Not going to Christmas party

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 12:22 PM PST

I went to my firms (~1000 people) Christmas party last year and didn't really care for it. Additionally, this year, the party is on a Thursday night. I'm scheduled to be at a client 2.5 hours away from where the party is. It was suggested to leave early to make the christmas party, but I honestly would rather just leave early and go home. Any consequences of not going to the Christmas party?

Need help looking for a job but I don't know what I am looking for

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 09:49 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've been at my job for about half a year or so now. It's a regular staff position - Mostly JE's and bank/balance sheet/fixed assets reconciliations in manufacturing/construction. I don't hate it but I don't love it either. I feel like I am lost. The more time goes by, the more i feel like I wasted time and money getting my MAcc. I feel like I don't understand anything that is going on. I am just pluggin away and going through the motions. I feel like I got this whole career decision wrong.

I did a stint in forensic accounting and I liked that a lot because it was more so project based. But i felt like I wouldn't go very far without first getting a solid foundation in accounting which is why i ended up where I am now. The only thing that I do like is just working in excel, creating charts, pulling data and creating more tables. I like the aspect of - here's all this shit, make it look nice, make it make sense. Are there any jobs that you know of that I could go into with that requires me to do the things mentioned above. I'm planning to stick it out for a little longer because 6 months is nothing in the grand scheme but I just feel like i want to do something more or something else. I die inside everytime that i think 'omg - i might be doing this for a few years.'

Within the Big Four how many years does it typically take to reach Managing Director, and what is the salary like at that point?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 09:03 PM PST

I can’t learn from Pearson centered accounting classes.

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 09:29 AM PST

I've about finished a managerial accounting class after a financial course both of which uses the Horngren book with online tests and homework.

The textbook is virtually illegible and the homework doesn't help me remember anything. It's become clear that accounting is a very important subject and I haven't learned jack and I can't even use the textbook to review.

    What should I do

Am I screwed because of my GPA?!

    Posted: 08 Dec 2018 04:19 PM PST

Im currently a sophomore at university. I have no chance at internships now because of my GPA. I have a 2.9 GPA but after this semester itll probably drop to a 2.7. Had another rough semester. Struggling in Bus Calc and Astronomy. Barely passing both. Also taking Financial Accounting and currently hold a low A.

No matter what I do nothing seems to work. I can study for hours, go to class, do all the homework and abuse office hours and still not do well. I'm starting to think that maybe college isn't for me. I have ADD and Dyslexia so studying effectively is hard.

I know that internships will require at least a 3.0 GPA but I'm currently below that and will probably drop even further after his semester. What can I do?!
