What is your opinion on pet insurance? [x-post r/dogs]

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 10:29 PM PST

Recently found out Allstate, my insurance company, offers pet insurance. Now, I've read a lot of negative thoughts on pet insurance. Some good too. Most critics spoke about small companies I've never heard of. So, what about someone like Allstate, geico, nationwide? Would it be worth the 30-60$ (guesstimation) a month to go with a large insurance company instead?

Any way to get someone out of my auto insurance policy?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2018 01:24 AM PST

Hello, I was wondering if there was a way of getting my son off of my policy. He's had a couple of accidents in the past year and the rates have gone through the roof, to the point where they're a serious financial issue. Would he have to hand in his license or is it easier than that. Also, will my insurance rate stay high or will his accidents be removed from the equation when he is off the policy? Sorry if the questions sound stupid, I'm very uneducated on the subject.

    Thanks everyone for the help!

    Help switching Auto insurance.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:48 PM PST

My wife and I are trying to find cheaper insurance plans and when I did my free quote with geico it looked too good to be true, so I want to make sure I cover our bases.

I currently have StateFarm insurance, nothing crazy but not the minimum. For my 2017 Cruze I pay 211 per month. I am a 26 year old male if that matters. No accidents, no tickets, perfect driving history.

My wife has a insurance with her mom and other family members with progressive and has the same, if not a bit worse, insurance plan as myself. She is paying 255 for her 2019 Jeep(we expected it to be high when we got it). She had 1 accident 5 years ago this month, no tickets. She is 27.

The quote I got from geico for both of us is 279 with the same coverage I have now...but I want to make sure it's not going to go up a crazy amount, or there's other fees, or really anything I can't think of. So any help or just knowing what questions to ask an agent would be much appreciated.

Halp! Geico runaround, might need new company.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:09 PM PST

So this is a little winding, but whatever. I own a pickup truck and a food trailer, and when I registered the trailer I called Geico and they said that the insurance for it was included in my pickup insurance. I verified this with them several times. Apparently within the last 6 months they've sent me a letter stating that I needed commercial insurance, which I never got. My food trailer is now in storage, not even being used- and they refuse to give me residential insurance on my truck no matter what. Even if I sell the trailer.

I've been with GEICO a decade, have accident forgiveness, and have two pickups insured with them. My rates are INSANELY low. For two pickup trucks liability and uninsured motorist with roadside assistance (I use constantly) My rate is less than 600 for six months.

Should I jump ship? I'm gonna pay a significant increase for commercial insurance I won't even use half the year.

    Thanks for your help!

Car Disability Insurance - REQUESTING TAXES?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:12 AM PST

    Hello,

Posting for a friend. She had an injury and has been off work for almost year.

She had insurance for her VEH when purchased. I assume it's some sort of disability insurance.

She will be going for knee/shoulder surgeries later this year so she is requesting for them to continue making payments. They've made about 12 payments.

She stated they are requesting not only copies of her tax returns but certified copies of her returns.

Is she *legally* obligated to submit tax returns at all?

Can they deny claim for not furnishing tax returns?

    UPDATE: Thanks for responding pros!

Ambetter vs BCBSTX? Which policy is better?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 04:21 PM PST

So I am looking over my options for 2019 healthcare. Currently, I pay $150 per month for health insurance through work and my 15yr son is on his own policy by himself and it is $245 per month. Both policies are HMO. They total to be $395 per month. I found a website called Stride and it found 15 policies that would cover both of us. Of those 15, I could afford 14 after government subsidy. I am about to post all of the info on the policies, so I will ask my main question. Is Ambetter a reputable company? I like the idea of an EPO. So what is my best option? I take 3 medications for Thyroidism and they are not expensive. I visit my endocrinologists 3 times per year. I only visit urgent care and only go once or two per year between me and my son. Sorry for the wacky formatting of the policies. All of the Ambetter policies are EPO and all of the BCBS are HMO.

If I sign up for the Marketplace insurance right now, can I get on my new job's better insurance plan in two months when I become eligible for it?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:10 AM PST

Need about 3 months (roughly) of time in at my new job (250 hours total, make about 30 a week, already almost a month in, so I should be there in about a month, maybe a little bit more) to become eligible to get on their insurance. Their insurance packages are way better than the Marketplace and my wife's insurance, so we want to get on that plan, but I was wondering is that going to still be possible in 2 months? Is insurance only open right now, or is that only for the Marketplace? Can I get on the Marketplace and then switch to the better one in 2 months?

    Question about salvage vehicle

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 11:41 AM PST

What happens when a salvage car gets in an accident before getting inspected? Vehicle in question was fixed up after receiving heavy cosmetic damage in the front, but was recently rear ended to the point of probably being considered a total loss. All receipts for the previous parts are accounted for, but I stupidly never got it to an inspector.

Am I completely screwed, or is here a way to save myself this bad situation?

    House Damaged in Hurricane

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 10:26 AM PST

My house was recently very badly damaged in Hurricane Michael. I just received the settlement numbers from the insurance company, which is significantly above what I owe on the house. The check will be made out to me and the mortgage company. Does anyone know what my options are? Do I have to fix the house? Can I pay off the mortgage and keep the rest? Can I sell the house? How would any of these scenarios affect my taxes? If I do fix it, I will probably just turn it into a rental. Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated. I honestly have no idea what I want to do or what I should do.

Coverages overlapped from two carriers. How to get refund?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 10:23 AM PST

This is for Homeowners insurance. My policy was set to expire, so I started shopping around. I got a new quote from State Farm with some adjustments plus bundling my auto. It was still too high.

I started my new policy with Nationwide on the last day of my State Farm policy. I was then billed for one month from State Farm. They said that my policy was never formally cancelled, so it was still active for a month. Therefore, I had coverage with State Farm and Nationwide for a month. I've done this with auto insurance before and was promptly refunded after showing proof of double coverage.

State Farm (local rep) is giving me a hard time pertaining to the refund. What are your thoughts? Is there a way to just contact State Farm corporate?

Auto insurance renewal - Moved back in w/ parents

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 10:06 AM PST

I am in my upper 20's, have my own car and been on my own insurance policy for the past 4 years as I was living on my own. I recently accepted a new job which made it convenient to move back in with my parents for the next year. With my auto insurance due for renewal, is there a way to go under my parents insurance policy or will I need to take my own? I am looking for advice on what is the best way to save money and how to go about doing so. Also the pros and cons of possibly switching to parents auto insurance or keeping my own.

FYI I live in Brampton it would cost me ~$180-220/mo based on automated quotes.

    TIA

    Rental car damage from ice?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 09:20 AM PST

My car broke down a few days ago so I have a rental to get me around during my search for a new car. I opted out of the CDW because I knew my insurance would cover anything that happened, but then sold my old car to a junkyard yesterday. Today I woke up to ice on the rental car, which I've never dealt with before (just moved to a colder climate). I sprayed some rubbing alcohol and water onto the windshield to melt enough ice off to allow me to drive. I figured the rest would melt off when I got into the sun, which it seemed to do. Once I got to my destination, I noticed a ton of scratches on the hood and on the top of the driver and passenger side doors.

    Pictures:

    https://imgur.com/RsCBEpZ

    https://imgur.com/umZQLI1

    https://imgur.com/Up8joTz

    https://imgur.com/UrPoMF6

I honestly don't remember noticing them during the walk-around, as there was a lot of damage closer to the ground and I was focused on making sure they had all of those marked. Everyone I've shown it to says they've never seen anything like this caused by ice, but I have no idea what else could have done it. I looked at the rental receipt and it mentions scratches on the hood on the driver's side, but there are now scratches all over the hood pretty much. It also notes scratches on the driver's side door and passenger door, but both already had one big scratch in the center, so I'm not sure if they were referring to the ones on top as well (if they even existed then). So my questions are:

    1) If this was my fault for driving the car with ice still on it, does my insurance policy even apply to me anymore since I've sold my car?

    2) I paid for the entire thing with a credit card which covers damage as a result of collision or natural disasters, and theft. I called and they said they wouldn't be able to tell me if I'll be covered until I file a claim. Is there any chance it will cover this?

    Am I liable?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 05:11 AM PST

Tree branch protruded past concrete parking stop, I backed into it and it made slight but costly damage to my vehicle. The problem is there is no sign stating vehicle clearance and I don't feel it is right that a huge tree branch is technically in the parking spot, this could have happened to any vehicle with enough height. I don't want to file a claim through my insurance if I don't have to. Thanks in advance.

How to get the cheapest bare bones Homeowner’s insurance?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2018 06:11 AM PST

I'm a mortgage loan originator and often work with clients who have tight debt to income ratios. Unlike property taxes, homeowner's insurance is one thing they have some control over, finding a policy with cheap premiums really helps them to qualify for more home. Lately I've been seeing more people struggle to obtain a policy with the minimum dwelling coverage (lower of loan amount or replacement value) and highest deductible (5% of dwelling coverage) allowed for the loan.

Any idea why they would have an issue finding insurance from someone who doesn't insist they need more coverage? Any suggestions on where to advise they look?

EDIT: "If you can't afford good insurance you can't afford the house" is a smart statement, but the fact is only a few of the people Im referring to are trying to go house poor. DTI can be tight for other reasons that don't necessarily mean they're going to be on a tight budget, for example I have a client right now who's self employed and has a really good accountant, good at tax time bad at mortgage time. Other example, client's spouse makes good money and doesn't have great credit.
