r/Stocks Options Trading Thursday - Nov 08, 2018 Posted: 08 Nov 2018 03:32 AM PST These stock options discussions run every Thursday. Feel free to talk about options you have or ask questions on options. But before you ask any question make sure you see the following links: - Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
- Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell
- If you're asking about basic terminology, see Tastytrade glossary, then feel free to ask a more in depth question afterwards, basic terms:
- exercising an option - when you use your call option to buy 100 shares or put option to sell a 100 shares
- strike price - The price at which stock is purchased or sold when an option is exercised
- ITM - when a call option's strike price is below the stock price, or put's strike price is above the stock price
- OTM - when a call option's strike price is above the stock price, or put's strike price is below the stock price
- ATM - when the option's strike price is at or very near the stock price
- long options (aka long call or long put) - buying options
- short options (aka short call or short put) - selling (or writing) options
- combo or option strategy - buying and/or selling multiple options
- debit - what you're paying to buy an option or combo
- credit or premium - what you're receiving (money) to sell an option or combo
- covered call - when you buy stock and then sell calls
- naked - when you sell calls or puts without owning stock or other options for the same stock
- Wondering what those option strategies are: OptionsPlaybook, common combos:
- Debit call spread (vertical debit spread) - generally a bullish combo that involves buying a call and selling a call at a lower strike; the cost of buying the spread combo is lower than just buying a call, however this reduces your max profit, but also reduces your max loss
- Credit call spread (vertical credit spread) - generally a bearish combo that involves selling a call and buying a call at a lower strike; this reduces your max loss compared to just selling naked, but it also reduces your max profit, however you get the full credit upfront
- Strangle - Two naked options, a call and a put, this creates a neutral combo and you profit as price stays between the two strike prices
- Iron condor - same as the strangle except with protection, reduced profit but also reducing your max loss
- A thorough explanation of nearly every option strategy explained by TastyTrade here
- Book recommendations by the options community at r/options (subscribe while you're at it)
If you have a basic question, for example "what is Theta," then google "investopedia theta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned. Is ROKU Reaching Bargain Level Posted: 08 Nov 2018 08:02 AM PST Roku is down another 18% today after reporting financials yesterday. Although they beat or hit estimates it appears investors are wary of guidance moving forward. Roku is becoming a powerhouse in streaming media and still developing their platform. This includes bring other streaming content providers into their platform. As such their earnings are still red due to high tech development costs. I think the current reaction is overblown and Roku is now a great bargain. They have over 10% short interest right now and that is probably growing. If they increase their revs with increased ad and content sharing from the expected in platform expansion we could see some explosive growth by 2020. submitted by /u/Rruder [link] [comments] |
The bond market Posted: 08 Nov 2018 08:38 AM PST I constantly hear that in order to have a well diversified portfolio that you should have some fixed income. But I've been looking at all the bond ETFs in the market, and all of them are showing losses or little gain for the last few years. Should I hold off on bond ETFs or is it still a good long term investment? submitted by /u/jjohn7676 [link] [comments] |

New to Pension Plan. Thoughts on my Index Funds Breakdown? Posted: 08 Nov 2018 01:58 PM PST I've recently been assigned a pension plan through my employer who matches 3% of my paycheck. It's with SunLife Financial. I'm not crazy about the index fund choices they have nor the fees. Here is the breakdown. Please let me know if this is an good strategy. I am not planning to stay with this employer for very long so I'm trying to get the most of this while I can. I am in my late 20's. Almost all the funds on the list are through TD Bank, and then a few others with investment companies. I chose the least expensive funds with the lowest fees. Fees for each fund range from 0.80%-1.6% with an expected annual rate of return of 2%-7% per fund. I tried to select diverse funds with 20% on fixed income (CDN bonds) and 80% stocks (CDN, US and International Stocks). There isn't an option here for real estate, otherwise I would invest in that. Instead of separate distinct index funds should I just invest in one mixed fund that includes all of these? MY CONTRIBUTIONS - TDAM Cdn Bond Index Fund - 10% TDAM Cdn Equity Index Fnd -25% TDAM Intl Equity Index Fd - 20% TDAM US Mkt Index (Reg) - 45% EMPLOYER CONTRIBUTIONS - TDAM Cdn Bond Index Fund - 10% TDAM Cdn Equity Index Fnd -25% TDAM Intl Equity Index Fd - 20% TDAM US Mkt Index (Reg) - 45% submitted by /u/nicolefromcanada [link] [comments] |
Best Beginning Investment Book Posted: 08 Nov 2018 07:51 AM PST Not looking to invest in an account and then not touch it for 30 years. I have money with a financial advisor for that. I want to grow my knowledge and learn enough to watch the markets and know what the language people use means and understand the importance of news revolving around different companies and what to look for. More for a side hobby that I can make some money with. Not trying to be the next genius daytrader. I started investing a small amount on the Stash App. 60 bucks so far. Plan on investing a small amount weekly. Hopefully to the point where I'm buying with more than 10 bucks at a time. Then maybe trying bigger apps when I learn more and have more money in it. So what's your best suggestions on books for this?? Thanks! submitted by /u/weneeed [link] [comments] |

Question: Mutual funds - short-term trading Posted: 08 Nov 2018 12:22 PM PST I occasionally buy/sell large cap mutual funds with my JPMorgan YouInvest account within short periods of time. I know that when you buy mutual funds today, for example, the amount you actually purchase for will be reflected on how today ended, not the current price (or the price yesterday ended). Does the same apply when you sell? Or is that an immediate transaction based on current/yesterdays price? submitted by /u/qquarter25 [link] [comments] |

- get the return for every month, quarter and year.
- account for comission fees, cash flow (dividends), splits, selling the stock or buying more share.
Any tips to get me started? I find nothing on the internet that meets my needs. Thanks. submitted by /u/Eddy_001 [link] [comments] |

Taxes Posted: 08 Nov 2018 09:42 AM PST I live in Canada and was wondering how taxes on dividend payments work. For instance can I not get taxed on dividend payments if I post losses on capital gains in the market over the same time period. Im only 17 and kinda confused so if you guys could let me know that'd be great. submitted by /u/AidsSZN [link] [comments] |

Why did DS go up after post worst than expected earnings Posted: 08 Nov 2018 08:15 AM PST Sorry if this a noob question. Drive shack was expecting earnings of -.09 but postes a -.23. My expectation was that stock price would decline however it went from ~ 5.50 to $6.50 very quickly. Can anyone give me some insight as to why? Thanks. submitted by /u/Wlraider70 [link] [comments] |
UPWK worth a buy? Posted: 08 Nov 2018 07:19 AM PST Upwork just had their IPO and they are levelling out it seems. The idea of the company connecting freelance work with freelance employees is a great idea and the freelance economy is only going to grow over the next few years. UPWK has a foothold right now and is really a dominant player it seems. Might be worth a small position as it could really grow over the next few years. It does have some competition and there are a few bugs with Upwork they will need to fix before they can really take a dominant and controlling position. What are your thoughts? submitted by /u/yourmonkeyboxismine [link] [comments] |

Convince me that this is the right time to get into stocks Posted: 08 Nov 2018 06:09 AM PST I've been saving all my life. Now I have a larger sum of money in my bank account. I already started buying stocks to see how the process is, but with a very small amount. I have no other experience in investing. However I keep reading every day. I am really afraid that a financial crisis is coming in 1-2 years and I will lose 30%+ of my money if I invest it all now. Others have told me that the worst thing I can do is to stay out of the market and not invest. However I can't believe that that is the right way. For me that is like ignoring all signs of a market crash and just YOLO without fear. Please explain me why would it be better to get into stocks now (and probably lose 30%+ later) vs holding on to the money now and starting with a 30% discount. I know that nobody can time the market, but there are many signs for this. A middle ground would be to invest part of it now, part of it later, but then again why lose 30%+ of the first part? submitted by /u/vovr [link] [comments] |

Taking off my brown pants S/O to y'all Posted: 07 Nov 2018 06:01 PM PST I started investing earlier this year in March and this sub has been an awesome forum for learning about new stocks, asking questions, and gauging sentiment especially because I have no one IRL to talk stocks with. Last month was the first large correction I've experienced as an investor and 9 days ago my portfolio was down 15%. There were a lot of mixed opinions and people panic selling but ultimately I decided to hold and add to my positions in large part due to the encouragement of many of you on here. Today my portfolio is green again and my average share prices are lower I'm really glad that I bought through the dip. I can finally take off my brown pants. TLDR: Don't panic during corrections, look at them as a sale. submitted by /u/taiwansteez [link] [comments] |
