TL;DR After co-founder breakup, who can claim the name of the startup?

    *****

This is a follow up of my previous problem that I posted here.

    *****

I just broke up with my co-founders because of a major disagreement. I expected every co-founder to start committing full-time to the startup which was something that they couldn't do.

There were three of us: me--a non-technical co-founder--and my two friends--both are technical. Our startup was a rental marketplace for construction equipment, like an Airbnb for dozers, excavators, or boom lifts. We have operated for about 7 months up to now.

I was the only one who committed full-time for the startup since the start. I was also the one who came up with the idea; I think this is important because I don't think my other co-founders care with the idea as much as I do. I was in charge in pretty much everything besides the technical stuffs, e.g. doing customer supports, talking to vendors, making contracts, etc.

We haven't incorporated our startup so we technically do not have any legal form yet (it's pretty common in my country).

Since we found a deadlock in the full-time vs part-time argument, we decided to break up. I told them that if we broke up, I still wanted to continue to run the business. They said okay, but I cannot use our startup name.

Here's what I think. I am (1) the creator of the name and logo (probably not a strong argument); (2) the legal owner of the domain. Since we haven't incorporated (or trademarked the name) and I own the domain, I think that nothing can (legally) stop me using the name. Also, I didn't claim the product/code that they built (I'll rebuild the website from scratch), which only makes it fair if I can claim the ownership of the name (everybody gets what they built/created).

FYI, changing the name would probably cost me a few months for marketing campaigns to rebuild customers awareness. I might also risk some investment potentials if the potential investors lost their interests if I needed to rebrand the product.

What do you guys think? Any solutions that I might come up with?

Reasonable equipment expenditure for new developer hires

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 03:02 PM PDT

I realize this highly depends on the company's situation, but at least from the employee perspective, I guess some expectations are to be met in order to stay competitive among other employers, not to be cheap and provide good working conditions.

So with all that in mind, what is a reasonable expenditure for equipment such as laptop, screen etc' for new employees (developers) in a startup with funding on its first year, considering that:

A MacBook pro 15' costs around 2700$ (outrageous if you ask me). I guess a screen is a couple of hundreds.

(Ranges or exact numbers are good)

Also would you suggest allocating a budget for the employee or just getting his preferences/choosing for them.

    Thanks

Edit: Let's not make this thread about Mac vs Linux or windows. It's not the point. Instead give estimation for an expenditure that is sane, not what it should buy.

Also please assume any new laptop will get the job done (even if you disagree, let it be a constraint of the question)

When to establish partnerships & sponsorships in your startup

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 07:43 PM PDT

I'm releasing an app in a few months and have a list of people & companies I'm interested in working with.

Anyone here with experience in setting up partnerships & sponsorships as they are near a product launch? Would love to hear details on the set process, at what point did you feel comfortable reaching out (wireframes, prototype, beta product, etc) contact method, any required document or info needed to be available between both parties, what terms were in place before an official agreement was officially made?

    Thanks for sharing in advance!
