Accountants of UK, how much do you make?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 04:39 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm just doing my own little survey. It's a few personal questions so you can choose to be anonymous. My questions are:

    1. How much do you make annually
    2. What part of the country do you work in
    3. How long have you been in your industry
    4. How many hours do you work in a week
    5. What's the work/life balance like
    6. Is it hard to move up the ladder
    7. Are you ACA, ACCA or CIMA

Its bit long winded so feel free to answer the questions you want. Thank-you for anyone taking the time to fill this out :)

Don't sell yourself short! Accountants do a lot of interesting stuff.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 09:52 PM PDT

For example, look at this report: https://www.parthenon.ey.com/po/en/perspectives/ey-university-capital-strategies This report is written by EY, one of the biggest public accounting firm out there.

The report is written articulately and incorporates a good amount of market research and data analysis skills. I always like reading these reports because they give good insight and shows how much work is put into these and the skills required.

Already accepted an offer but still have interviews

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 09:36 PM PDT

Long story short: I made all these interview appts pretty much in the same week after meet the firms but now I have already accepted offers(for my #1 choice, a small, and a mid size-not on the same semester lol).

I still have 2 more interviews for other firms next week, the probability of me turning down my current ones are unlikely so idk if I just go for formalities since I already said I would...

    CPA (Canada) PERT

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 09:50 AM PDT

Well, I am in a somewhat disappointing situation and need help here from CPA (Canada) students or members, who have experience with submitting PERT.

I cleared CPA-CFE (Ontario, Canada) last year in September. I had not submitted my PERT (experience) till then. I work in an accounting firm, which provides the compilation and tax advisory services (no review or audit engagement). The firm is not registered with CPA. When I submitted my PERT experience, CPA replied by saying that I can't submit any accounting and/or tax advisory experience gained at a non-CPA-registered firm. I had earlier thought that it was true only with review or audit engagements and not with compilation. However, without going into details here, the outcome was that CPA agreed to accept only 12 months of my 'current' experience and that too up to level-1 for only two sub-competencies. I decided to submit my 'prior' experience, which I had gained in the year 2013 in UAE. I got my assessment back yesterday and CPA assessed few competencies at level-1, which I wanted to be at level-2. Furthermore, CPA wants me to show 'progression' in future even in those sub-competencies, where I have achieved level-2.

I have below questions, where I need help:

Has any of you experienced the same where CPA refused to accept your 'compilation and tax advisory' experience at a non-CPA-registered firm? How did you go about it or what do you advise me?

For all enabling competencies, they gave me level-1 with same remark copying on all of those. I feel that they even did not read my submission for enabling competencies. Did any of you get level-2 in enabling competencies? If yes, how?

Did you ever contest any sub-competency assessment with CPA where you were given level-1 and you wanted level-2? How did it go? Any advice for me if I want to go about it?

My UAE 'prior' experience was at a managerial level. My 'current' experience in Canada is at a lower level and CPA expects me be show 'progression' and in my assessment, it has written it as a remark that for future 6 months of remaining experience, I must ensure progression. How can I do that? Any ideas?

    Apologize for the long post.

How important is Data science/understanding technology for accounting?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 07:29 PM PDT

The BIG 4 has been publishing articles about Block Chain technology and how it is going to revolutionize the accounting industry. I find that Accountants would need to have good insight in tech and data science in order to capitalize on the profound implications that technology will have in the accounting industry.

    Illegal Activity in Campaign Finance

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 05:00 PM PDT

Are there any CPAs here that work on tracking down illegal activity related to campaign finance?

I recently had a conversation with a candidate running for public office who claimed that abuses in this area are rampant, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this sort of thing.

Anyone switch to recruiting and not become a total douche?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 07:58 AM PDT

Inspired by a post recently. Seems like a good out for those that find accounting is not for them and enjoy more people interaction.

But I wonder if posting douche stuff to linked in is mandatory. Seems to be. I can't count how often a recruiter posts some inspirational 'follow your dream/passion' quote- it's like lady, you're recruiting accountants, 98% of your applicants are not choosing accounting out of passion or following dreams.

    Looking for accounting advice.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 10:20 PM PDT

I'm an accounting student. About to graduate (4 years). I have absolutely no interest in getting cpa certification. I just want to get out into the work force and find a job to live a simple life. What title should I be looking for in my job search and at what type of companies. I know the benefits to getting certified and all that, but I just don't feel that I have the ability to get through it.

    Need advise for career growth

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 10:10 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I need some tips from you all to pivot my career into Tech Venture Capital/investment banking. I am currently a Senior IT Auditor for the most vital financial institution in the US with some certs (CISA and CISSP), MS in IT Mgmt and BA in Pre-Law and Busn Admin with concentrations in Finance, MIS and Legal System. I graduated in 2015 (master's) but I have 5 yrs of exp in IT (2 years in Web Dev, Enterprise Architect and Dev Ops, 3 years in IT Security Audit and some M&A).

I used to work for the largest energy holding company in the US as well and recently got an offer from Goldman to join their Internal Audit's Consumer and Commercial Banking Tech but I originally applied for Investment Mgmt Division, so kinda upset about this. My goal is to get MBA from Columbia/Harvard/Yale in next 2 years, and get myself into venture capital scenes so, what would you recommend for me as fellow professionals? Should I focus on getting other certs like PMP or Cloud Security before MBA? Stick with GS or move on after 3 years?

    big 4 background check question

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 03:17 PM PDT

I have received an offer from a big 4 company as a campus hire, and I am going to accept. However, they said there is a background check that will be initiated when I accept the offer. I know that credit, criminal, and employment history are common. However, on my resume I had vita volunteer experience, and I don't have any phone numbers or contact info from the people I worked with on that experience. I am not sure how that can be verified. Will they ask about any of that volunteer stuff or will they just ask for employment references/my supervisors from my work experience?
