How to be taken seriously as a young entrepreneur whose business relies on contract work? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 08:32 PM PST Hi r/smallbusiness, I am a young (turning 18 in 3 months) small business owner. I own a small software startup that provides a service to businesses that would make them much more desirable to their clients. I sound sure of myself because their clients are students, and being a student myself, I conducted my own market research through polling my peers throughout the school district. Everyone says they would use it on a daily basis had these companies been using my app. Since my business requires other larger businesses in order to work,
Thank you for reading and I'd love to hear any advice you guys have for me! [link] [comments] |
How to hire someone that is trustworthy? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 12:49 PM PST I know of people that I've worked with that will do the bare minimum at a job and sometimes less.. Even a good person that leases from your house that you pay less is better than one that is ruining things.. How do you hire someone that has the personality to do good work, or how do you set up the pay or conditions that will have the person you hire being a good worker. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 04:14 AM PST I'm running a software development agency (http://codejunkie.co). I've been getting business from Upwork and personal recommendations from friends so far. I want to increase my clientele and move to higher paying businesses. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Do these type of things actually work? Posted: 05 Nov 2018 03:19 AM PST I recently got invited to InitiativeQ which seems to be quite promising but I doubt it is really now just a snowballsystem. Initiative Q is an attempt by ex-PayPal guys to create a new payment system instead of credit cards that were designed in the 1950s. The system uses its own currency, the Q, and to get people to start using the system once it's ready they are allocating Qs for free to people that sign up now (the amount drops as more people join - so better to join early). Signing up is free and they only ask for your name and an email address. There's nothing to lose but if this payment system becomes a world leading payment method your Qs can be worth a lot. If you missed getting bitcoin seven years ago, you wouldn't want to miss this. You need invites to join: https://initiativeq.com/invite/HetCrs6hQ my problem now is, I would like to know if stuff like that actually works or if they are just some type of snowball system? My wife has just launched her business. How can she best promote herself? Posted: 05 Nov 2018 02:50 AM PST My wife has just launched a wellbeing/mindfulness business. How can she best promote herself? Her first project is called LSW Mind Cards, which she published on Kickstarter last week. [link] [comments] |
Need help figuring out lack of sales on new webshop Posted: 04 Nov 2018 10:58 PM PST My parents have been selling hand crafted jewelry from amber for years and we've decided to try and sell it online. We've collected information into excel file and then imported that into Shopify. There's little customization, but I feel like it's quite easy on the eyes, which in my mind is a good thing. We've had some traffic, most of it through Facebook ads which seemed to work great in terms of engagement but there's no sales. Bounce rate off the front page is very high and very few people are adding to cart. So far I have this on my "todo" list:
Any thoughts? I can see value in adding the above, but it's hard to believe it would make that much of a difference? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2018 01:01 AM PST Hi guys! I have just been hired for a Business development manager & Operations manager for a small bespoke moroccan tile business. The product is beautiful and even though it is a small business we can make in excess of 50k a month. I've been hired to implement new ideas to get the business growing. We really need a system that will do all of what I've listed below because at the moment we are using too many different programs and it's wasting a lot of time! It would be nice to have everything accessible in the one system. I previously used SYSPRO at my old work but that was a bigger scale company and expensive to run. Can anyone recommend a relatively inexpensive program that will do the below: - Create quotes and invoices & sales orders - Take part-payments on sales orders (for back orders) - assist in checking stock and back order lead times - manage and complete orders - Customer database and account balance - assigning back order stock to customers who have paid - Create credit notes. Any help would be much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
how do you manage your human resources (20+ persons) in many different projects? Posted: 05 Nov 2018 12:22 AM PST Hi all! I have to manage my staff through many different projects (web development, mobile apps dev etc). We need to track time of each worker spent in each project in order to define time and make invoices. We used to do it in Google Sheets, but it becomes more and more complicated and general. Developers just write something like 80\20 or 50\50. So I cannot calculate ROI of each project correctly. What tools or apps do you use for HR, time tracking and Projects Management in similar multi-project businesses? Many thanks and have a nice day! [link] [comments] |
Order management system with alerts and integrations Posted: 04 Nov 2018 04:29 AM PST I have a small furniture company. We sell custom pieces and refurbished antiques on our own website, on several online marketplaces and in our showroom. I am looking for a system that can: Track my thousands of unique items with information like cost to prepare, asking price and appropriate marketplace to list on. Help my assistant to remember to reach out to all leads and to remember every step in the order fulfillment process when a sale is made. We currently use gmail and use the star colors to segment what stage the order or importance is at however this is not working well. This would need to be cloud based so I can view sales and progress and also add in steps like ask customer for review etc Integrate with quickbooks (desktop version currently but I will switch to online need be) View visual reports to make better projections and marketing decisions. Idea for generating sales near the end of the year Posted: 04 Nov 2018 05:52 AM PST My shop is online only and I sell safety products for dogs. This is my third year in business and for the last two years my sales totally crash in November and December. Last year I even tried a Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale and got no sales. I think people are just more focused on Xmas shopping for themselves, not their pets (although I know that lots of people buy presents for their pets). So I have an idea that I want opinions on: Run a giveaway promotion with two prizes. One prize is selected randomly. The second prize goes to the customer who purchased the most (in dollar value) from me over the year. I would not publicize how much that customer spent because it's nobody's business, just publicize the two winner's names. I'm thinking that second prize might motivate some to buy from me this month and next. Thoughts? How can this backfire? Just to clarify, I don't consider no sales to be a backfire although it's still a failed promotion. By backfire I really mean public criticism or complaints. [link] [comments] |
Recommendations for an open-source ERP package Posted: 04 Nov 2018 09:12 PM PST I'm looking for an open-source ERP package and I'm currently evaluating a list, but would love to hear modern recommendations / reviews of what you're tried and liked / avoided. There are lots of things to take into consideration, for example odoo is just too expensive for anything more than the most basic of uses. I do however have some criteria:

Posted: 04 Nov 2018 08:46 PM PST I am looking for a ~$15k loan to begin rolling the ball and bringing my idea to fruition. I don't think a credit card with 0 APR would work since I am unsure how much I will be approved for. My situation is that I don't have an income and it will be a few months, or a year at least before I can make good money to start paying it off. What sources should I look at and where should I begin looking for monetary sources? Family is unable to and not really into asking friends. [link] [comments] |
LA Tech Business in search of sale guru's AKA lead generators Posted: 04 Nov 2018 07:56 PM PST Hello, I'm one of the main founders of a tech business based in Los Angeles. We're set as an LLC, have the office, the team, resources, supportive partnerships, and several clients. That said, we have created a successful organization; Although we are missing the final piece to be a fully well running machine, and that is a lead generating team. I work the role of a strategist for my business where I create the leads for my team and am the main builder who performs constant research and decisions to continue to make the business grow. I've accomplished bringing many serious clients on board though the challenge I'm facing is that I have a small window each day that I can only spend time on networking and interacting with potential clients (lead generating) and cannot do it as much as I'd like to. Therefore, I'm in search of people who have a knack for sales so that way there is a regular flow of clients. I know that what ever method in 'general ' a business pursues to generate leads, there will be certain situations where performing in person sales/lead generating will always be more effective than any different way. I'm calling out to anyone interested. There are events, meetings, and networking locations that I will like this team of sales people to represent us at. The compensation will be based under the same method I get compensated and it will always be generous. Ultimately, I'd like to work together long term for the people that begin early with us and that eventually those involved will full-fill roles of executives that will handle deals with other businesses and work on developing marketing strategies for us in the future. You can feel free to IM me if you'd like more information. We also branch out our work to the Inland Empire. So we are practically open to working anyone with in South California. I look forward to your inquiries. Respectfully, Bolt-zinga77 [link] [comments] |
How do you know how much to pay? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 10:18 AM PST I have a small handy man business that I do after work part time. things have been getting busier for me since a local property management company started referring me to their clients. Just today the owners of the company told me they are considering selling it and they wanted to know if I was interested. The business is very part time for them, (1 day a week) they have about 14 clients and the business generates about $40,000 a year with minimum overhead. They told me they are open to offers but they feel the business should be worth about 3x what it brings in. Making their asking price about $120,000. My initial feeling is that number is very high. How do I determine the worth of a business like this? any advice would be very helpful. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2018 04:34 PM PST Hello everyone! I run an online business called holly+nectar, I hand make products such as facial oils, soaps, beard balm, tinctures, and natural remedies. I would LOVE to put my products in some local boutiques-- I put a lot of care into formulation, scent, and branding, so I think they would do really well in person. My main question is, what's the best way to do this, and what should I prepare? Do boutiques usually like to buy wholesale or just lease space? Just trying to get a better understanding of the whole process. Thank you! Etsy shop: https://etsy.me/2DmQ0x2 [link] [comments] |
Providing content marketing services? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 04:27 AM PST We're providing online services (calculators, saas, etc) to a niche industry. I'm considering adding content creation and marketing services to the mix but I"m concerned about how to create large amounts of content within a single niche? Anyone doing this as a service? How do you create content across a large number of clients in the same industry? i.e. how would you create decent content for say 500 real estate brokers? [link] [comments] |
Need software for ATV rental business Posted: 04 Nov 2018 03:45 PM PST I'm building a business renting out ATV's, trailers, and other powersports equipment. I'm looking for suggestions for rental management software, preferably something that has a customer facing rental interface that can be built into our website. It would be nice if it also kept track of maintenance schedules as well. Anyone know where I can find such a thing? [link] [comments] |
How should I approach location owners with my vending machine business? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 11:42 AM PST I'm getting into the vending machine business, and want to place my machines in nightclubs, malls, college campuses etc. If you, as a location owner, sat down with me to discuss putting my machine in your spot, what would be on your mind? What kind of questions would you have, what kind of returns would you expect, etc? (My machines will carry women's care items like wipes, tampons, condoms etc. hence the locations I want to go after). [link] [comments] |
What are YOUR "unchanged" core rules that you use in the start up phase of business? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 03:24 PM PST My idea is that to start small and frugal, gain traction and then ramp up. Spend money where it will impact the most. In the new product/business first being better in one or more ways than the competition. Then as you gain traction and ramp up to make your product/brand vision "irresistible" so to speak to the competition. Hire slightly above average (75th+ percentile marketers, SEO, and so on) in areas that are important. Hire those that know have the same vision or mindset. Try to be cost efficient with book keeping and leveraging the use of technology/services that save money + increase efficiency. Keep marketing/design/product features solid/effective + simple at first. If you had you write a small blueprint or core rules what would yours be? [link] [comments] |
EU VAT - Zero Rate - Romania/UK Posted: 04 Nov 2018 03:24 PM PST We are a Romanian company (Ltd Company and VAT Registered in RO) currently providing services in UK as a middle agent as: OUR SUPPLIER ROMANIAN COMPANY >>> OUR BUSINESS >> UK CLIENT. We are performing these services in the UK. From our suppllier we rent Equipment and their staff and we are invoiced from our supplier (in Romania) to us in Romania. We are charged VAT (TVA) at 19% by this supplier but charge no VAT to our UK client as its classed as Zero Rate VAT (Reverse charge) What mechanism can we use to reclaim the VAT? Would it just be standard reclaim at end of financial year? [link] [comments] |
Startup to Help Small Businesses to get Exposure Posted: 04 Nov 2018 03:13 PM PST I am working on a project that aims at helping small businesses (mainly retail industry) to get more exposure. How should you use Social Media on days you're off? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 03:06 PM PST I've always wondered this do you post anything during the day regarding your business or do you use it as an opportunity to interact with customers? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Nov 2018 02:53 PM PST Starting a (currently) small IT business. I'm still at the "Me, Myself & I" stage. Any suggestions for position title? CEO sounds presumptuous, over-inflated. Owner is true, but bland and too general. President is OK, but seems trite and over-used. [link] [comments] |

Best way to have an on line sale? Posted: 04 Nov 2018 01:52 PM PST I generally vend more in person, at little market that are held within events in my fairly niche community. I was supposed to be traveling interstate for what would have been my second biggest event of the year and had spend most of the money I have in my business account on updating stock I was pretty confident I would sell and make back. It's a big biannual even, some people will often "treat themselves". However due to an unexpected family emergency, I was unable to go. So now I have a lot of stock, an empty account, and no events coming up for the foreseeable future. I think I need to have a sale and take the hit on losses for items, just to shift some stock and put some money back in the account, and just generally for a while have been thinking I need to get things on line. I don't generally do much on line selling. I have a Facebook page and Instagram. Because I normally only do a small quantity at a time on line, I just load the photo, give the price and people just comment if they want it, and we PM to exchange details. That's not probably not going to be the most efficient way to do it if I have a big scale of all of the stock I have. But doing it that way means I'm not stuck with transaction fees, listing fees etc. So I'm just wondering if I was going online what the most cost effective and efficient way to do it? Etsy probably have a more organic reach and I think you can set up short sales periods pretty easily, however my understanding is that you have a listing fee per item which gets charged monthly if the item is still listed on Etsy, as well as a transaction fee and I believe a percentage for credit card transaction? Other options I think would be too set up a "store" on my Instagram or Facebook page - (I'm not sure how those work but I'm assuming this probably is some kind of fees involved with them as well). Or through my website (weebly) which looks nice, can have categories - but you get a credit card transaction fee / tax and if listing more than a certain amount of items /having certain functions, you have to upgrade the website which costs more. Any recommendations on best platform to use? Thank you! Edit: everything past the first paragraph because I hit enter by accident >.< Spelling [link] [comments] |
