Is this a good health care plan?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:38 PM PST

I'm completely out of my element in picking an insurance policy. Would this be considered a good one, and would there be caveats to it? I don't have anyone to assist me with this choice. It's just individual insurance for myself. I go to specialists quite a bit and have like 8 current medications so I need the copays to be low. Thanks guys!!

Drivewise by Allstate... How do they know things?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2018 03:09 AM PST

I just subscribed to the Drivewise program with Allstate & cannot find answers to my questions within Allstate or with Google searches. Can anyone help?

    1) Is there a way I can tell the app or it will know that I'm a passenger? I don't drive much at night & am an overall safe driver. Not everyone I get in the car with is the safest, though, and if I'm out late I'm drinking & thus not driving. I don't want to be penalized for others' poor driving habits or being responsible after a night out. 2) I saw a thread that said something about taking a picture of your odometer if the company thinks you're trying to commit fraud. I drive company vehicles regularly. Do you know if this would affect anything if a question were to arise?

Hit & run on house! What should I do that I have not done already? Help!

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:12 PM PST

    Hello All,

So about a month back I came home from a vacation and found my front deck in pieces and parts of someones vehicle all over my yard. Come to find out someone ran into my house and somehow they drove off. A police report was filed and they found out whose vehicle it was although they did not find the driver. I have a traffic crash report and it has the ladies information on it, but not her Insurance company. I talked to my insurance and they told me that they reached out to her although she has not gotten back with them most likely because she was not the one driving the vehicle. I am unsure what to do at this point because my insurance is a $1,000 deductible and I feel I shouldn't have to pay anything out of my pocket. Please let me know if there is any way to find out her insurance company or what I should do.

Root Car Insurance - being denied with good score?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2018 02:51 AM PST

I started my test drive with Root about a month ago and so far I have roughly 4 days left in the test. I currently have a 10/10 score, have never been in an accident, took driving lessons and all that jazz. However I was doing a little research on it and apparently Root will deny you if you use your phone too often while driving.

I occasionally make a phone call, frequently press a quick next button or type a song to change my music, and drive for Lyft and Uber a few times a week. This all requires phone use. What's the chance I'll be denied insurance with them over this?

If I am denied, are there any other companies like Root that test your driving first?

Is anyone familiar with Transamerica and how they operate?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:12 PM PST

I got licensed last year and worked briefly as a salesman before deciding I didn't like sales. Recently I was sent a letter about job openings for an agency not far away, which immediately made me cautious because that's not usually how you find a job, unless they recruit constantly due to high turnover. Also the jobs described were producer(which I'm familiar with), or "advisor" which seems like a very vague term.

I looked them up. And this agency is actually a sub agency for a company called Transamerica. What I'm wondering is, are any of you familiar with this company and how it operates? I have a suspicion it's door to door sales or something equally abhorrant. The only other time I've had a position seemingly fall in my lap it was a bizarre insurance mlm.

    Geico quote question

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:04 PM PST

I have had two quotes from Geico, one at ~$83 and another ~$104. The more expensive one includes the two "accidents". Both were other people hitting my parked car, when I was not in it. I never made a claim on my current insurance only with the other at fault drivers. Nothing should be on my drivers record.

Should I let Geico know about these accidents, or not put anything down, as they were not my fault?

Got in an accident where the car I was driving wasn't under me

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:32 PM PST

A couple days ago I got in an accident with my wife's car, very minor, no one hurt, literally scratches on my car and dents on the other car.

Been talking to my insurance and they've just taken general information, anyone hurt? How bad are the damages? Etc

Im not on my wife's insurance.

How do cases like these turn out? Is it automatically my fault now because I'm not on the insurance of the car or am I liable now for full damages on the other car because the physical cars insurance that i was driving is not under my name?

Drivers License is coming up suspended.

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:09 PM PST

I recently moved to Los Angeles County from WI. A few months before moving, my Drivers License was incorrectly suspended due to me paying a ticket (lack of proof car insurance) online. Went to city hall & DMV in Wisconsin and took care of it, suspension was released and I did not have to pay a reinstatement fee. However, when I went to buy car insurance in CA, my license came back suspended. I called the DMV in WI and obtained a personal copy of my driving record proving I possess a valid license. Before I go back in tomorrow (to the Car Insurance Company), does anyone know if there's steps I need to take or something I can do to buy Car insurance in the state of California? This is really frustrating and I could use some help. Also if anyone has any recommendations on cheap car insurance in CA for 10+ year old car and someone that has a clean driving record, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

Is it difficult to do a direct comparison between pricing for auto/homeowner's insurance?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 10:41 AM PST

    Hello /r/insurance,

My auto insurance is up for renewal soon and unfortunately it went up a good bit, for no reason that I can tell. So I decided to shop around. Do different companies have different 'tiers' of coverage, or can they do a direct comparison for the exact same coverage amounts?

I sent screenshots of my current auto and homeowner's coverage details to a local agency to see what they could quote me, and I specifically requested quotes for the exact same coverage ($250k/$500k bodily injury, $100k property damage, $250 collision deductible, $5k med pay, accident forgiveness, and $250k/$500k/$100k for under/uninsured). I'm currently with Allstate.

The quotes I got back were for $300k/$300k, $500 collision deductible, $1k med pay, and similar UN/UIM, with no accident forgiveness. This was for Nationwide.

So, did they just miss my request for a direct comparison, or can they just not do a direct comparison between what I want and what Nationwide offers?

    Thanks!

I forgot to pay my insurance and now I need to make a claim. Please help!!!

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 07:11 PM PST

    Hello,

I live in a condo and pay condo insurance (with deductible insurance) for the condo corp. Last year I made monthly payments. When my insurance was up for renewal last month I ask them to switch it to yearly. I thought everything was good until today I noticed the money never came out of my account. I called my broker earlier today and asked and she said when you switch to yearly you need to fill out the payment information again. She took my credit car number and said he would call the insurance company to pay it but they may already be closed. Of course as luck would have it, while I was out today, a pipe burst and flooded every unit below me (10 floors down). Will insurance cover me? Even if you give me bad news at least I will know.

    Thank you

Home insurance won't cover previous professional repairs?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 11:14 AM PST

    Long-time lurker, first-time poster.

My fiance and I closed on our first home in November 2015. In December 2015 we made our first insurance claim as we had leaks and water stains in our bathroom from some freak Christmas rain storms. The insurance company came and ended up giving us the money to find a contractor do the repairs and be on our way. We then had a professional contractor come and do said repairs.

A little background here...the previous owners added on to the back of our house, which included the addition of our bathroom and side entry hall among other things. When they did this, they apparently didn't want to mess with the pitch of the roof so they made it so you have to step down into the new rooms so they didn't have to raise the ceilings to match the rest of the home. I know nothing about building/adding to a home so I have no idea if this is normal or not. BTW, the previous owners were supposedly professional, licensed contractors.

Fast forward to the present, and we have yet another leaky ceiling, this time right outside the bathroom and in the side entry hall, both part of the addition. So my fiance calls the insurance company on Sunday to make the claim and they said the insurance adjuster will call us within 24 business hours. Later that day I go to look at the ceiling and, holy cow, the bathroom hall ceiling has a new, pretty severe crack that's about 36 inches long. We call immediately to update the claim. I check on it throughout the day and it seems to be getting worse and sagging more in my opinion, but my fiance thinks I'm delusional. We go to bed that night and my fiance wakes me up at 4am and says "Uhh (fiance)? Our ceiling caved in..." Now we have a gaping 3 foot by 3 foot hole in our ceiling, the hall light is hanging by the electrical wire, and there's insulation and drywall everywhere. How we, or our 3 German Shepherd "guard dogs" didn't hear this, I'll never know as it's right outside our bedroom. Since we now have full visual access to our attic, we think we see the problem. The original roof line of the home just so happens to run along the length of our house where we are having the leaking. Seems maybe they didn't do something right with the addition. It's now Monday morning and we eventually speak to our adjuster who says he will be there this morning (Wednesday).

He comes and checks it out. Says the roof is actually in good shape, much to our surprise. We're not sure the exact age of the roof, but know it's less than 15 years. We've had some wicked wind recently and then rain so we figured the combination of those damaged our roof. He says some of the vents and other non-shingle parts of the roof have hail damage but that it's just cosmetic. Now for the fun part. He said those previous roof repairs we had done back in 2015 were not done correctly. And they won't cover previous repairs, whether done correctly or not. The contractor had apparently used a tar that's not meant to be truly permanent. The insurance adjuster basically says "off the books" without actually saying that, that he's going to write up the assessment and give us the money to cover the repair/replacement of the vents, but what we do with the money is up to us. Essentially saying you can take the money and get the roof fixed correctly and also the giant gaping hole in your house and leave the vents alone. We haven't received the assessment back yet so I don't truly know if it will be enough to cover everything that needs done, in addition to our $1,000 deductible.

We are fairly young and new to home ownership and insurance and all the "games" they play to try not to cover things but is this normal practice for a home insurance company? It just seems shady to not cover repairs that THEY TOLD US TO DO. I'm just curious if this is "business as usual" or if we should start looking for a new insurance company.

TLDR; Home insurance won't cover the previous roof repairs done by a professional contractor that they told us needed repaired in the first place.

Is it possible to make THIS much selling life insurance the first year?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:09 PM PST

    300k to 400k?

I am not looking to get into the industry, but someone made the claim that this is possible. I am just curious to know if this can even be done?

I think even with leads, this is pretty much out of reach for 99% of people that sell life insurance? If it is possible... can someone explain how? I am just baffled.

Looking for car insurance, USAA keeps directing me to Liberty Mutual

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 03:45 PM PST

I have been hearing many good things about USAA and decided to look into them. However, whenever I try to request a quote on their website, it keeps taking me to Liberty Mutual.

I thought these were two separate insurance companies? Does USAA not provide their own insurance? I am just a little confused. Is it because I am not, or am not related to, a military service member?

Any insight would be appreciated, thanks.

Need to find cheaper car insurance

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 11:57 AM PST

Long story short I'm turning 26 later in the month and currently pay 250 car insurance for my 2014 Cruze that I'm leasing. I really need to figure out if I can get something lower but I'm so lost on where to begin even looking it what to ask.

I currently use Hanover. Also, my car got totaled back in December and I've been using my insurance for my doctor bills as I've suffered spinal injury. Would leaving Hanover affect this? I was not at fault

Thank you in advance and I'll answer any other questions anybody may need to know.

    Hypothetical Auto Claims Question

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 03:01 PM PST

This is just a hypothetical question about how auto coverage would respond in a specific situation.

I do quite a bit of highway driving, and last weekend I saw someone hauling a horse trailer with a few horses in it. Let's say I get in an accident with this person, I'm at fault, and the two horses he is hauling die from the accident.

Does my insurance pay for the horses? How does the insurance carrier determine a value for the horses? What coverage does it pay out under (BI or PD)?

What if the horses don't die? Does the other parties insurance pay for their injuries?

Now let's say I'm the one hauling the trailer with horses, and cause an accident. Would my insurance cover my horses if they die? What about just injured?

I'm sure I could read some policy forms but I figured someone here would have experience that they could enlighten me with!

Is Marketplace coverage purchased during SEP retroactive?

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:49 PM PST

Hi guys, I left my job 10/13/18 and am trying to navigate and pros/cons of COBRA vs Marketplace. I have employment lined up in a couple months, but it does not have health-care coverage available yet (small business startup).

I understand I have 60 days from termination date to elect COBRA, I'll be paying 100% of plan cost, and coverage would be retroactive to termination date. I had a couple of doctor's appointments (10/22 & 11/6) recently which I understand would be covered retroactively under COBRA once I send in paperwork and pay the premium.

I understand that if I enroll in the Marketplace today, coverage most likely would start 12/1. Would those visits I had on 10/22 & 11/6 be retroactively covered by the Marketplace coverage? My understanding is no, it would not retroactively cover those visits.

As I see it, I have two choices: 1) Elect COBRA and pay the $421 (individual) premium through the next 18 months or SEP and get everything covered. 2) Elect the Marketplace coverage which would take effect later and pay out of pocket for the recent visits.

Am I understanding all of this correctly?

    Thanks

I was parked and my car got hit by another car

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 01:05 PM PST

So I parked my car and the car next to me was pulling out of the parking spot and side swipped my car. There was very little damage to both cars. My cars side turn signal was broken and a couple scratches. He has some scratches and a piece of trim broke. He obviously didn't check to see if any cars were around him and just turned to pull out hitting me in the process. My insurance was cancelled the day before and I was unaware that this happened. We exchanged information and filed a police report. He said he is going to make a claim since his car is owned by the dealership he works for. Since I was uninsured am I liable for his damages? Could I make a claim with his insurance to fix my car? Or what is the best way of handling my situation? I'm worried I could be ticketed for no insurance and liable for the damages. I live in Michigan which is a no fault state.

Question about car insurance / totaling car

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 08:44 AM PST

I recently totaled my car on Friday night. I have full coverage through progressive, and they told me I didn't have rental insurance so I wouldn't be able to get a rental, but I could get it at a discounted rate for $30 per day. Someone just called me and told that my car was valued at $7,000.

I have absolutely no idea how this works. I know I owe about $9,000 on my car, as I make bi-weekly payments for it. I've only had it since August of this year. I thought that when you had full coverage, they would finish paying off your car? Or maybe I was told wrong by someone.

My claim agent is going to call me tomorrow about the details

    Travel insurance claim

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 11:09 AM PST

Hi, was hoping for some advice regarding a travel insurance claim. My girlfriend and I are currently in the USA (from Australia) and we have travel insurance. During travel her water bottle opened in her backpack and swamped her laptop, after drying it out for 72 hours we attempted to turn it on to no avail. Is our travel insurance likely to cover this, or do you have any advice on how we might go about claiming this. While the laptop is still under warranty, I'm assuming that the manufacturer will not replace it due to accidental incidents. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Need advice in terms of rights in regards to car repair from accident/not liable

    Posted: 07 Nov 2018 09:39 AM PST

So about a month ago my car was rear ended at a red light. The other party that hit me was in a rental car (this will come up later) and did purchase insurance. I'm in CA.

Long story short, they accepted liability. I was told by the other party's insurance company to get two quotes. I accepted one, and took the vehicle to be examined once the initial supplement was accepted. Upon teardown, it was revealed the frame was bent and needed to be replaced. It has been at the shop for about a month doing nothing. Part of that was because the insurance company didn't send and adjustor out to look at the car. Once it was revealed the frame needs to be replaced the timing of the repair changed significantly as the part will take 3 months min. to arrive. The insurance company then said they would total the car , due to the additional cost of the rental car. It will now be about 4-6 months until I get the car back. I planned for that.

A couple days later, they called to say that the car would now not be totaled. Through conversations with the body shop, I think this was because, the shop fronted the money for the frame, through instruction from the insurance company, which they could not return. Upon learning they would have to essentially pay for the frame twice.

What I'm more or less writing about in this post is to understand my rights in this situation going forward. Concerns and issues are as follows:

    - During this process I was told that by law, the insurance company had to provide me with a copy of the supplement. They did not. I did receive one, but from the shop. Is that right?

    - Upon receiving the supplement, I notice many of the parts were not OEM. I questioned this and the insurance company did not address my concerns. They said they have the right to put this parts in, which they do. However I spoke the Department of Insurance (who later said they can not help me further because my claim with an rental car company and not another insured motorist) and they said they have to prove the parts they are putting in the car are up to original spec. I have asked for this. They do not respond.

    - I will now be out of a car, which I have to pay for for 4-6 months, if not longer. Is there a statute of limitations on repair? Can I be reimbursed for this? They have and will provide a rental car for this period, but it is not up to par for my current car.

    - I have concerns regarding if my car will come back in proper condition. They have to take apart the whole vehicle and it will not be reassembled in a factory. I don't know what condition it will come back in. Furthermore, I had to select a shop before knowing the actual issue, not one that specialized in the issue. It will also diminish the value of my vehicle, and in this particular case, the car I purchased was solely based on its ability to retain its value.

Any help would be of value. Thanks for listening reddit.
