HOA insurance jumping up 3x Insurance

HOA insurance jumping up 3x Insurance

    HOA insurance jumping up 3x

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:43 PM PST

I'm on the board of my HOA, we're being given one day's notice by the property manager that our master insurance policy carrier is dropping us and we have to approve signing on with a new one, and that market conditions currently are such that all quotes happen to be 3 times as much as we were paying previously. Is this total BS?

We were paying 8k a year, then some homeowners in the association decided to rob us. Went on an HGTV-fueled remodeling spree and just assumed the HOA exists to pay for it. I and our lawyers would have loved to go to trial because they had no case but it would have cost more than settling, which is what the mediator talked everyone into doing and meeting halfway. Now the insurance is dropping us unless we pay $24k a year now instead of 8. This difference is about what they paid out over the lawsuit. What's the point of insurance if they just raise your rates to make you cover the full cost of what they paid when you actually needed them? If we have to fully pay our costs out of pocket may as well skip also paying for insurance.

The whole thing seems fishy. Did "market conditions" really change so that everyone is paying this much more now than they were before?

If we can't get reasonable quotes or all insurance carriers refuse to offer coverage, as apparently a lot of carriers have been doing according to the property manager, what options do we have? Is it legal to not have insurance? What other option is there if they all decline?

Condo above me suddenly leaking water, California

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:17 PM PST

    California here.

TLDR, upstairs unit had a toilet issue which leaked into my unit, plumber came to replace their toilet and caused a steady of stream of water to come down. Was I right in submitting a claim to my insurance company? I

I live in a 3 level condo, where part of my ground floor sits under my neighbors bathroom/living room. Well today the smoke alarm goes off and I go downstairs to find a large puddle and water leaking from the smoke alarm.

Have the neighbor come over and be admits he had an issue with his toilet earlier. Water stopped for now. He calls over a plumber and I hear them fixing it. This caused a steady stream of water to come down and I now have water stains around my smoke alarm, where the water is coming through. Water has been nonstop for the past hour.

I called my own insurance company to file a claim. The rep wasn't helpful in answering if I should call my neighbors insurance or just file under mine for now. I figured since time seems to be a big factor in past posts here, I'll just file a claim and maybe my insurance can followup with theirs.

Was I right in this? Or should I cancel my claim and go through theirs? This doesn't seem like a negligence thing, it was sudden. I'm not even sure if they should be responsible at all assuming it truly was sudden.

Am I being screwed by a CCC quote?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 01:24 PM PST

I recently got in an accident in Richmond, Virginia that totaled my 2014 Toyota Camry LE. Not my liability. For reference, this car at the time of the crash:

    • had 2 previous owners (including myself)
    • was a personal vehicle only, never used commercially or for rental
    • was never in an accident prior to the total loss
    • was certified pre owned as of June 1, 2018
    • had 32,000 miles
    • was bought for $14,700
    • Had ~4000 miles on the tires, which they're valuing at $46

My insurance adjuster sent me a quote generated by CCC with 3 comp cars which values my car at $13,500. The cars they sent me seem incomparable to mine. I pulled the CarFax on all three of them.

    Comp 1:

    • 2 previous owners
    • no accidents or damage
    • 76,000 miles
    • Commercial, Rental Vehicle
    • adjusted - $334 for features
    • adjusted + $2764 for milage
    • adjusted - $819 for condition, as CCC is assuming that since the car is on the lot it's in dealer condition for everything
    • valuation: $12,867

    Comp 2:

    • 3 previous owners
    • Rental and personal vehicle
    • 50,000 miles
    • Involved in an accident
    • adjusted + $95 for features
    • adjusted + $1015 for milage
    • adjusted - $819 for condition, like above
    • valuation: $13,541

    Comp 3:

    • 3 previous owners
    • 67,000 miles
    • personal only vehicle
    • adjusted + $95 for features
    • adjusted + $1878 for mileage
    • adjusted - $819 for condition like above
    • valuation $13,754

I think it's fishy that they assume that the car is in great quality just because it's on the lot. I know that's not true, I've seen cars that have the inside completely stained on the lot. Twice in the last 6 months because of this stupid accident. Furthermore, they're claiming that being a rental vehicle and an accident wouldn't necessarily drive down the value of the car. CarFax seems to think different?

I can't tell if I'm getting scammed or not. There are no truly comparable cars to the loss vehicle in my area and I feel like somewhere inside the adjustment black box I'm getting ripped off.

Is there anything I can do?

EDIT: I would like to clarify. Is there any success in questioning the auto applied "Dealer Quality" condition on the comp cars? I just bought a used car last Friday and I looked at 4 cars on the lot. All of them had dings, scratches, seat wear and stains consistent with the loss vehicle. Because of this, I'm questioning how CCC can auto adjust all comp vehicles to a like new condition.

    Car accident- rear ended

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:20 PM PST

So this is likely a dumb question but this is my first accident so here goes.

    This happened in NY

So me and the car behind me was stopped in traffic and the car behind me got plowed into and caused him to rear end me. On the police report I was not listed as being at fault. Car 2(directly behind me) was listed as following me too closely and car 3 was similar faults. Car 3 also admitted on the report as not seeing we were stopped.

No injuries. Now damage to my car, as far as I can see, is minor. The rear bumper is dented in slightly and has punctured holes from, I assume, the license plate screws and a crack leading from one puncture which I assume may grow. As it is I'm assuming the damage is less than $1000 or I guess whatever the cost of a new bumper is if they would just replace it.

I'm now unsure of where to go from here, am I screwing myself if I go to my insurance (state farm) company and trying to repair something minor? Do I directly contact the insurance of the guy that hit me instead? (Geico) or would state farm work it out with Geico without me worrying about paying whatever the deductable is and such?

    Thanks

Massive Price Differences Between Geico, Progressive and USAA?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 07:33 AM PST

So I just got my 2016 Toyota Corolla yesterday at the dealership. Now stupidly, I just went with my mom's auto insurance, which is USAA without asking other companies for quotes. Last night though, I went ahead and did some research looking into Geico and Progressive which seemed to be the lowest in my state, Florida. Note that I just have had my license for about a little under 2 months and I am 23 years old. So I'm expecting a pretty high rate, and here are the numbers from the 3 companies, note that each company I've compared apples to apples. Meaning roadside for each, same PIP values, property damage values, deductibles, etc.

    USAA: $602/month

    Geico: $402/month

    Progressive: $130/month

Now of course, $600/month for a 6-month plan sounds ludicrous, even if I am a new driver. $402 sounds a bit more reasonable, but $130 sounds incredibly low! Is there a reason for this massive price difference? In my view insurance is insurance. Of course, USAA is an amazing insurance company, and I know a lot of people on Reddit love them. But charging me $200-400 more, does not in my opinion warrant me to stay with them. What do you guys think? Should I just swap over to Progressive? Can I even get my first payment as a refund back from USAA? And what about Geico vs. Progressive?

Software startup employee trying to understand insurance

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:53 PM PST

    Hi guys and gals!

I've tried searching previous posts and can't quite find what I'm looking for...

I work for a software startup that sells to insurance — agencies, brokerages and MGAs. Even some smaller carriers.

What I'm looking for is a comprehensive guide for understanding not the ins and outs of policies and things but rather dynamics of the industry — tools that exist (I know about the popular AMSs out there but not much else), pain points for producers and owners, essentially info about the industry as a whole and how all the pieces fit together. I think this will make it easier for me to understand and demonstrate value to the people I'm calling into.

I was hoping this subreddit had a wiki with this kind of info but all I see is the rules about solicitation.

Any ideas from you all on where I should look?

We have a great tool with a broad use case, but it requires a little bit of user education on our part and that's where my breakdown is. I want to be on a level field with the folks I'm talking to, but sometimes get objections that I'm having trouble handling.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Question: I was involved in a car accident, other person's insurance was cancelled

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 05:46 PM PST

    State: FL

I was side swiped by another vehicle about a month and a half ago. The police was called, reviewed our insurance cards, and ultimately gave the other driver the ticket. I filed a claim with the other person's insurance (Windhaven), and was told they would process the claim within 48 hours after I submitted photos of the damage to my car. I followed all the steps and do not hear back from the insurance company for 2 weeks. Eventually, I get a letter from Windhaven saying they will not cover the damages to my car because the policy of the driver was cancelled due to lack of payment.

My question is: should I call my insurance (Geico) and file the claim with them? I know that they will cover damages to my car, but I am worried they will increase my monthly payments due to having been involved in an accident. Or, should I wait for the letter from the court for the hearing and make a plea with the judge to make the other driver pay?

TL;DR: Driver side swiped me and their insurance policy was cancelled so they won't cover repairs for my car. What should I do?

Am I Still Allowed On My Parents' Auto Insurance? Illinois

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 09:12 PM PST

I recently purchased a new car and the car is registered in my name. The insurance policy is in my parents' name. There was no issue adding my car to my parents' insurance policy with Geico. In the vehicle information section, I put myself as the registered owner for the car. Geico approved it no problems. However, did some digging online and read that if the vehicle is registered in my name, I should also be the primary policy holder. Does this mean I have to get insurance under my own name and not be a part of my parents' policy? They have 1 other car that I will drive occasionally and my parents will likely drive my car occasionally as well. We all live at the same address and I don't expect that to change anytime soon. Thanks in advance!

What can I do to better my chances of getting my emergency room visit appealed and covered?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:26 PM PST

The night of 10/14, I was being an idiot and hurt my foot jumping over a fence. When I landed I felt a crunch followed by a very constant throbbing, swelling immediately. I toughed it out the rest of the night, but the morning of 10/15 my foot was too swollen, couldn't walk on it, and constantly painful wether walking or not.

I figured I should go to the emergency room since I knew a doctor would want to do x-rays. It was too painful to wait to see a practitioner just to be told I needed x-rays, and then wait to go get x-rays. Besides that, the only practitioner that is covered by my insurance and near by can't do x-rays on-location.

My insurance didn't cover me for the following reason:

"Remarks: Aetna covers emergency treatment when the member has a medical condition that causes sudden symptoms that are severe enough that a person with an average knowledge of health and medicine could reasonably expect that not receiving immediate medical attention would put his or her health at serious risk. After a review of the clinical documentation submitted, a Medical Director has determined that the emergency room services received do not meet these criteria. Payment of this claim has been reduced because your plan provides lower benefits when the emergency room is used for treatment that is notconsidered an emergency. Please contact us if there is additional information that we should consider. [307]"

What can I do/provide to really prove to them that THIS IS THE REASON I HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE?!

Examples on papers I should collect, any personal testimonies, medical records, quotes from my policy, ANYTHING

    Texas (US) rear ended

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:55 PM PST

I am looking for feedback on handling a car insurance claim in Texas.

Basic info: Me 2016 Ford Mustang, under 12,000 miles, custom order built March 2016, $43,650 sticker I was rear ended, other party admitted fault as does their insurance No medical, just vehicle damage

Initially I started a claim with the other parties insurance. I got an estimate from their insurance adjuster, didn't like it and haven't talked to that insurance company since.

I started a claim with my insurance, have the initial estimate and a check from them for their estimated amount minus deductible. Car is in the shop and a supplemental claim has been processed with a check being mailed to the shop from my insurance.

I am trying to keep control over the repair and not indirectly agree to anything from the insurance company by accepting payment so I have requested my insurance sends payments to myself vs the shop. My intent is to pay for the repair myself and not cash any insurance checks unless I agree to the amount.

My concern is with the insurance payment. Currently it is short on the shop hourly rate and some items I disagree with like who makes the parts and blending paint vs repainting a panel. Am I on the right track with keeping insurance out of the payment until an agreement is made? I am also trying to keep the option open to drop the insurance claim and file against the person who hit me.

My secondary concern is with diminished value. Should I even bring that up with my insurance? I am planning on getting a DV appraisal to avoid a low ball 17c offer but should that just be sent with a demand letter to the person who hit me for their insurance to pay?

Third concern is loss of use. If I had gone through with the other parties insurance they had mentioned paying for a rental. With my insurance I have waived rental coverage since I have other vehicles to drive. I do have an Uber ride after dropping the car off and will have a second one when I pick it up. How do I recover the Uber trip and the days of lost use while the car is being repaired? I have found rental prices from two local companies that have Mustangs to keep the vehicle type as similar as possible.

Opinions on car insurance - Statefarm

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 11:56 AM PST

Hi, so I'm sure this gets posted a lot but I was hoping for some opinions on whether my current car insurance is worth the price, which $89 a month for 6 months. Personally I think it is but I've never had insurance with any other firm.

I've been with Statefarm since I was 17, I just turned 25 this year. 1 speeding ticket in 2014 (maybe 2015), a failure to obey traffic control device in 2016 (reduced from speeding). No accidents whatsoever.

    • Liability $100,00 / $300,000

    • Mandatory personal injury coverage $50,000

    • Emergency Roadside $5

    • Supplementary Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists(SUM) Coverage $100,000 / $300,000

Let me know if I left something out

Question about auto insurance claim and subrogation process

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:06 PM PST

    State: CA

I was in a minor collision last week where I was rear-ended. After filing a claim with both my and the other party's insurance, the other party is now claiming that I backed into him. My insurance has established 100% liability on the other party.

I've spoken to my insurance about the subrogation process and just want to get some feedback on how it works. What was explained to me is that if the cost for repairs are under my deductible ($1000), my insurance will not pursue subrogation with the other company. If it is over my deductible, my insurance will pursue subrogation right away for the entire cost of the repairs (the $1000 and everything over as well.

I've received a few estimates, some around $1,100 and some around $900. Keeping in mind how subrogation works, am I crazy or is it not such a dumb idea to go with the $1,100 estimate? I know that the actual costs of both estimates could very well be higher, but the risk of not even having my insurance fight for ~$1000 makes me weary.

As I've mentioned, I've also filed a claim with the other person's insurance, but have been informed the other party isn't returning his insurance's calls. I was informed by a claims dept customer service rep today that if they never get in contact with the insured, my claim will stall (I plan to call back and speak directly the claims agent in charge of my claim to have them elaborate on this)

Any insight on which estimate I should go with and what could happen if the other party doesn't cooperate with the claims process.

    Thank you.

(Car accident) Insurance claim, need expert advice

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 06:51 AM PST

About 5 days ago i was involved in a crash in which someone sideswiped me on the freeway (in the rain), it caused me to lose control of the vehicle and colliding head on with the center divide. All the air bags went off and the from and sides look done for. There were 2 witnesses and the police and ambulance came, a police report was filed. I started an claim with my insurance and am hoping they just pay my car off, i am upside down on the loan but i do have GAP insurance. I am still in the process of this and awaiting what insurance says on if my car is repairable or not. Even if it is repairable, i dont want it anymore due to severity of the wreck.

For anyone who has been through similar, if my car is deemed totalled will the insurance company pay the cash value of my car? Also will they give me extra for a down payment on another car or something? I am not sure what ti expect and I dont want to get cheated because i still need a car.

Need expert advice, auto insurance claim [North Carolina]

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 12:17 PM PST

I was involved in an accident where I was traveling on a two lane highway and a car stopping at a stop sign from a side street stopped past the line and came out into my lane. I braked but slid into them. The police said they couldn't determine who was at fault at the time of the accident. I have pictures of debris from my running light clearly past the line. I filed a claim, I spoke with a lady and explained to her what happened. When she called I was away from home and did not have the police report number or pictures to send. An adjuster came out, and determined it was a total loss. He said the claim had been accepted and I got a call from a different individual saying they would be sending a check. I received the check and cashed it. Two days later the woman I spoke with initially called and left a message saying that they were denying my claim and that the police report was not in my favor, and that the check had been cancelled; but I already have the money. What should I do? I believe I am in the right but I do not want to be charged with fraud or something. I have not replied to the message I was left. Should I keep quiet? Will they try to screw me somehow? Please help.

State Farm being difficult with DV claim, any advise?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 03:54 PM PST

I was involved in an accident about a week ago. I got the initial estimate on my car and it's about 6K. Damage was to the rear driver's tire/quarter panel/bumper and I had side air bag deployment in driver's side front and rear. I'm a claims adjuster so I know they may find additional damage once they disesemble the car. State Farm(tort) has a limits issue and I'm already working in getting with my insurance to see if they will waive subrogation so I can get my DV claim. My car is a 2018 Honda Accord with less than 5K I'm mileage. State Farm basically said they hold that unless a car was not repaired to manufacturers standards, they do not owe me DV and the burden of proof is on me to prove it. I work for another insurance company and our DV department evaluates all estimates for the customer and determines if a diminished value is warranted. If it is not and the customer disagrees then the burden of proof is on them as our evaluation was done. They're basically not even willing to consider a DV claim until I prove to them that one is necessary. I had the discussion with them that this is practically a brand new car had no damage on it before this accident happened and as we all know any major damage that's done to her car will reduce the value when I go to traded in. I'm experiencing that now with my dad's car that was involved in one major accidents and a greatly reduced the trade-in value when we tried to sell it. Other than consulting an attorney, is there any advise someone can give me on presenting this DV claim successfully? I handle bodily injury claims so this is a little outside my level of expertise. I am presenting an injury claim to them as well and with this level of difficulty I can't wait to get that discussion started 🙄

Van driver hit my car (UK)

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:56 PM PST

    Hello,

As title says, a van driver hit my car earlier this evening.

I was coming off of a roundabout and the van driver came speeding round from a 40mph road onto the 30mph road roundabout and hit my car as i was off at the junction.

When speaking to the driver, he said "I didn't see you".

Would that be considered admitting liability in this case..? I just want to be able to approach insurance smoothly... especially when this isn't my fault..

Huge Rates for Stone House - Oregon

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:50 PM PST

I purchased a 90yr old stone house for 190k 10 years ago, not stone veneer stone all the way through. remove the drywall inside and behind the insulation is the other side of the stone, the stone is structural it holds up the house. at the time of purchase i had a very difficult time finding any home insurance companies that would insure it and we were denied by almost every one but managed to find one company that was willing to insure it for 1,800 a year after they had somebody come out to inspect it. since then every year our rates have gone up almost $100 each year and we are now paying $2650 a year.

i have been looking around recently with much the same results (most companies unable to insure) and happened to find another insurance company (well known) that has quoted us $800 a year, they matched all the same coverage as my current policy so now i am really wanting to jump ship but i am worried that it's too good to be true. what differences should i be looking out for that might explain the price difference?

What happens to a financed totaled car when not at fault

    Posted: 28 Nov 2018 02:49 PM PST

This situation hasn't happened to me, I've just been thinking about this since I almost got destroyed by a truck going 45 through a red light. My car is currently financed and im still paying off the loan, if I had been hit, and my car was totaled, what would have happened with regard to finances? Let's say for the example it's like a 20k loan and I've got 15k let to pay off. Would my loan be paid off and I would be on my own to pay for a whole new car or would they have given me money for a new car or something else?
