Help. My father passed away leaving his business to my sibling and I. Unfortunately,it will be either sold or closing soon. I am 49% owner and I have no idea what/what not I'm entitled too. Can this happen w/o my signature?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 06:41 PM PST

We are partners. I am 49% owner, making my sibling the controlling partner. I unfortunately do not understand much when it comes to business, my sibling had multiple business' and I'd consider them quite aggressive. If it sells an I entitled to 49% profit? If it closes, are there dividends or something within the company if be entitled to? I don't think they would do me wrong, but I need to cover my butt. We share a family lawyer as well and sometimes I feel as if the lawyer is working for him and not us. Also, with the sale/closing of the business, I am out of a career that I've been at since I was young. I have no college education, as I walked away to work at the family business. I'm scared, I have no idea who to turn too and am looking for any help or understanding. If there is a more appropriate places to post this, please inform me.

Edit: I should mention that it's not exactly a small business. At a time it was a multi million dollar business. I have to embarrassingly admit I know nothing of the financial specifics of the Co. now. My sibling has never offered to share any of this info with me nor has our accountant.

I'll also add that I still receive a paycheck, the exact same amount I was getting when my father was alive. I could probably count on 2 hands the amount of times I have been to work in the past 6 years. I used to work side by side with him and it's been nearly impossible to get myself to go there, let alone out of my house. I don't understand where his salary went, but I would've expected to recieve part of it. I've dealt with mental issues most of my adult life; severe anxiety, PTSD, and insomnia. Losing my father has taken a serious toll on me to the point of me not functioning. (I understand that's not good, don't remind me let's just stick to the business part)

Edit 2: Thank you for all the replies. I can't thank you enough. It really gives me an idea of where to start and what kind of questions I should be asking and whom I should be asking.

    Valuing an Apple Orchard

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 07:08 AM PST

My buddy and I are looking to take our savings and buy an Apple Orchard!

Backstory: My buddy had worked on this apple orchard growing up for 10+ years throughout HS, college, grad school but then got an office job. Well, the owner is looking to retire and wants to sell the farm and my buddy, being sick of working in an office, would like to get back to working on a farm and thinks its a great opportunity. The apple orchard has been profitable as long as we've known.

Now: My buddy and I want to buy this farm -- he would live on the farm and run the operations, I am just helping with the initial investment (we would have to draft up a partnership agreement -- whole another deal). We got all of the numbers for the farm for the past 5 years but are still figuring out how to value the entire thing (land, buildings, equipment, business, etc.)

My thought process is to value and sum up:

    - Business: What multiple should I put on the profit (average last 5 years)?

    - Land and Trees: 40 acres

    - Buildings and equipment

Hoping there were some people out there with experience valuing apple orchards and could help us out!

    EDIT 11/23/2018 12:18 pm EST:

The majority of revenue for this business is U-Pick! Leftovers are then sold wholesale. Looking into also making cider.

How to market your online store

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 01:28 PM PST

Hi r/smallbusiness! I know I'm showing up with one of the most 101 questions on the planet, but I just started my company. Thank you in advance for taking the time to give a newbie advice!

I'm an illustrator and graphic designer, and I just started an online store with my work on clothing (tee shirts, tanks, sweatshirts, toddler/baby stuff), home goods (throw pillows, tea towels), and decor (framed, canvas, and metal prints, posters). I've had a fair number of customers just from people I know and word-of-mouth, and everyone seems to really like the products, so I'm happy on that side.

Where I'm struggling is how to market to the world at large. With roughly three gazillion small online stores out there, I feel like I'm staring into the abyss a little bit. Short of getting extremely lucky and having something go viral, I don't know how to get my store in front of as many people as I need to.

At my margins, I need to sell at least 100 pieces per month. Assuming a conversion rate of 2%, that means I need to get around 5,000 people to my website every month.

I'm wondering if the only way to accomplish this is to just dump a ton of money into advertising, at least in the beginning while I'm growing my customer base. Should I just stick to social media advertising? Or are there other avenues I should be exploring at this stage? I've also considered reaching out to influencers, through Instagram/YouTube/blogs, to see if I can send them products in exchange for reviews. But honestly, I'm such a fish out of water here that nothing feels like the "right" way to go.

    How to discipline employee?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 08:28 PM PST

So, I bought a convenience store at the beginning of this year and I have one employee that handles the stocking, cleaning etc. He's been at the store for 10 years now, with two ownership changes. I've known him for a year before I bought the store, as I used to frequent the store and we've maintained that friendly vibe and never really transitioned in to the boss-employee relationship. Plus he is much older then me and I am very young.

For the most part he does his job well and maintains everything. At the same time, I am very easy going compared to the last owner. The last owner was pretty much no bullshit, straight work type of guy.

The current situation is this: He is supposed to take all the rugs out of the store and mop under them. Recently, I've been noticing he hasn't been doing that and just mopping around the rugs. I know this seems like a simple thing, but I am very disrespected by this behavior. It shows me that he thinks I am not paying attention to him and he can get away with things. So, I'm concerned that he might be doing that at other parts of his job. At the same time, I know he doesn't have bad intentions, and he does most of job and all employees try to get away with things and make their lives easier.

It's more of a respect thing, because I know the previous owner wouldn't even have this issue and the employee would've never thought about doing it.

At one point I want to just kinda let him know that I feel very disrespected especially when I tread you better. But at the other end I think I am making a big deal out of nothing, because he does most of job well. What do you guys think? Any suggestions?

I was just accepted for a $22,500 loan at 12% interest rate to buy a truck for my business. Should I accept or keep looking?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 05:16 PM PST

I feel this interest rate to be extremely high, but buying our (boxed moving) truck has been a long overdue investment we need to purchase. Are there any other options I could look into? Is this rate common for such a loan? I've applied through our bank before but they denied us because of low cash equity (I think, forgot actual term).

Our business has been in business 3 years and has 200k in sales, but had a loss last year of about 20k cause of truck expenses.

The upside of this current loan is I only had to send 3 months' bank statements and was approved in 2 days. Whereas my bank will ask for income statements, balance sheet, etc. and since I do all bookkeping/dont have a dedicated accountant, I don't really have the time to get all this together right now. So should I just suck up the high interest and accept the loan?

    Ooma, Vonage, or another service

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 08:40 AM PST

Moving into an office and I need to get a new phone system.

Right now, it would be 2-3 extensions in the office, with a couple of people who work outside the office (so ability to forward to cell phones or an app would be good). I am hoping to add more in-office staff within a year so I need expandability.

Right now, I may include off-site answering at least part-time.

Any recommendations for a good phone system?

    Business Personal Property Taxes?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 01:39 PM PST

    Hi /r/smallbusiness

I started a small business this year (95% service, 5% software sales). I got a retail license so I could sell the software. I just received a tax notice for "Furniture Fixtures and Equipment" valued at $25,000... my tax due being $1,200. I have a home office, a single computer, and that's it. I'm a little confused.

Any idea what I should do from here? I don't have that amount of business assets. I tried to call my state's Department of Revenue, but they are closed for Thanksgiving. Has anyone else had this same thing happen and were you able to get it resolved?

    Thanks in advance!

Hand written notes or fliers better ?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 01:31 PM PST

I'm in the Cash 4 Cars buisness alot of our leads come from going door to door putting fliers on junk cars. Sometimes we'll run out and hand write notes instead.

Maybe its just a coincidence but it seems like people call us alot more when we use the hand written notes rather then the fliers.

I'm thinking maybe hand written seems more personal so that's why. What's your thought ?

    Multi-brand support/management help!

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 10:46 AM PST

    Hi!

I own a few businesses which are all independent of each other. I have different employees for different businesses. This led me down a road to 3 different VOIP providers, and having all 3 VOIP apps on my phone and desktop. It's becoming a pain to constantly switch between apps and managing all 3 business phones in different places!

Does anyone have a recommendation for a phone provider you can manage multiple businesses under?

    I need:

*user permissions to access only their assigned business

*voicemail and text message notifications to email

*to know which business line is ringing

*ideally manage each business contacts individually

Does anything like this exist? I'm currently trying out Dialpad but they don't offer text to email notifications, and their integrations with other softwares is extremely minimal.

    Thank you for any help!

What are the chances of this being seen as unprofessional by clients? Have you had any similar experiences? What were your solutions? Thank you

Sales and marketing dilemma. Damn commissions.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 02:03 AM PST

Hi everyone. Here's a tricky scenario. You are a supplier of a shampoo product of multiple stores, and you'd like to boost your sales by encouraging the stores to prioritize selling your product rather than the competitors product. However, the stores you supply offers your competitors shampoo product over your product because, for every 3 bottles of shampoo sold, they get some monetary commission. Sadly, your company can't implement the same commission reward system because you don't have enough profit margin on your product to be on par with the commission rate of your competitor. What do you do? #suppliers #scenario #scenario #profitmargins #rewardsystems #sales #marketing
