Did I just ruin my family’s lives? Posted: 08 Nov 2018 06:20 PM PST The facts: I did not add my new born baby to my insurance with the 31 day limit. It's now day 42. I'm in MN. The delivery was normal all his dr visits have been normal. My poor excuses (you can skip this): I didn't know the limit was 30 days. My dad is dying of cancer. He started hospice care and stopped all treatment recently. All I've been doing is being torn between my family, my dad, and work. When the baby came I thought I'd get him on my insurance when I got back to work. That was 2 weeks in. During that time is when my dad's health took it's turn. The tumors in his brain started bleeding and he got really dizzy. Now he's slurring his words and waiting to die. I've been trying to see him every chance I get but my wife is still healing from the delivery. She's been unable to lift our 6 year old who needs lifting throughout the day because he has Down syndrome and Autism. My parents live 40 minutes away. We haven't been sleeping. My life is a huge fucking mess right now. I fucked up. I fucked up big time. I don't know what I'm going to do. [link] [comments] |
My toddlers were in a vehicle that got rear ended Posted: 08 Nov 2018 07:14 PM PST My mom was driving my kids to the park and they got rear ended. Thankfully no major injuries. My kids (3 & 4) were both in their car seats with 5 point harness. My youngest has been complaining of being sore and headaches since. They've both been having nightmares and anxiety about getting back in a car. My mom and youngest did go to urgent care immediately following the accident- my oldest did not. Today the other party's insurance called and began hinting around at a settlement for the kids. She gathered some info and said she would check back in a month. I do not anticipate any further medical care for them unless the nightmares/anxiety get unmanageable (but that's doubtful to happen). My question- should my kids really expect some kind of monetary settlement out of this? Car seats were immediately replaced and I know the urgent care bill will be taken care of. Those were my biggest concerns. I mean, it would be nice to add to the kids' college funds but I'm not sure if pursuing anything is the right thing to do and if so, how much is reasonable? Appreciate your thoughts and advice! [link] [comments] |
Plumbing disaster and insurance Posted: 08 Nov 2018 01:51 PM PST This nightmare tale is long. TL;DR at the end. Our home insurance is with State Farm. So far, no one I've talked to (claims department, local agent, claim adjuster) has been able to to answer my questions. So I came here hoping someone could point me in the right direction before things get much uglier... and more expensive. Last weekend water flooded our remodeled basement. After 15+ hours of plumbers investigating the cause, it's been determined that our kitchen drain drops down behind the dishwasher and through the wall behind our bed in the basement. At the base of that pipe, a 90 attaches the vertical pipe to the horizontal pipe that runs beneath the slab of our house to the main drain in the basement bathroom, about 15 feet away. The 90 has failed, about 2 feet down beneath the slab. Our stairs, walls, and flooring are damaged by the water. The water from the kitchen has been seeping into the ground where the 90 should have been and in the past week started bubbling out of the wall by our stairs. The plumbers have been scratching their heads over it for three days, but they are pretty confident that the 90 and possibly the pipe beneath the slab are no longer viable. The insurance adjuster came this morning and did his thing. He seemed nice enough but couldn't answer my questions about coverage, just kept saying he needed to "do more digging." He asked me a bunch of questions though, about plumbing which I know exactly nothing about. My answers seemed to conveniently jog his memory about our coverage. For example: he asked if the plumber thought it had been leaking for awhile, to which I replied, well I think so since the water has traveled over here and just started pouring out over the weekend. He suddenly remembered that our policy does NOT cover long term damage. Go figure. We are looking at upwards of $20K to repair this and the adjuster wrote me a check for $2K to replace our floors and patch a few holes in the drywall. I feel like I'm not asking the right questions so I'm not getting any answers. Is there anything I should ask? Anything I should do going forward? TL;DR: Our basement flooded due to a crappy old pipe. I have State Farm and they are deflecting my questions about coverage. I feel like they are leading the witness, so to speak. What do I need to know to avoid getting screwed? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Nov 2018 01:40 AM PST Father got rear ended the day before going to the hospital for treatment. He wasn't able to fully handle the repairs and the car in question often takes months to repair. Unfortunately my father passed away (unrelated to the accident) and I want to make sure the car can still be repaired under the claim he created? The other driver accepted full responsibility at the time and my father's insurance was handling the claim. [link] [comments] |
Sideswiped on the highway by a commercial vehicle - his insurance claimed not enough evidence Posted: 09 Nov 2018 01:14 AM PST I was driving in the far right lane down the highway, and a dump truck (or a similar commercial vehicle - I'm not sure what to call it exactly) was driving in the lane to the left of me. Well, he merged into my lane and hit my drivers side. When he hit me, he ended up pushing my car 90 degrees until I was perpendicular to the road and then he pushed the drivers side of my car like another couple dozen feet down the highway before coming to a stop. Once we came to a stop, I pulled forward onto the left shoulder and so did he. He was edgy about calling the police but I did. It took them 20+ minutes to arrive and when he did, the policeman talked to both of us and looked at the damages. The policeman said on the scene that the other driver was at fault BUT he refused to do a police report when I asked. He said to just take his name and badge number and I could contact him if I needed to. Both me and the other driver took pictures of the damages and then he drove away and a tow truck towed my sad car away. It was an older sedan so with the damages it was totaled, the driver's side tires were busted. The back drivers side door is smooshed shut. So a week and a half later, my insurance says I'm not at fault and his insurance says he's not at fault. I claimed he merged into him and he claimed the inverse. His insurance called the police but claimed the policeman "barely remembered the incident." So now he has nary a scratch on his semi and my car is totaled. And now my car has been at the impound lot for a week and a half and it's $500+ just to get it out plus the bills to tow it somewhere else. Which is greater than the value of the car now. Is there hope for an attorney or should I just eat my losses? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 08 Nov 2018 11:22 PM PST I'm looking to understand the PRI industry better (especially from MIGAs perspective), but I can't find many online resources of experiences of people who are actually in the field. Anyone here willing to provide an ELI5 of what underwriters look for when assessing risks (country, project, sector, etc), practically speaking? And also, which skills are most vital? Thank you! Received a $20k Hospital Bill After Being Told It Would Be Covered by My Insurance Plan Posted: 08 Nov 2018 05:17 AM PST 6 month ago, I went to the hospital for checking my stomach. Doctor said I have to take Gastroscope and confirmed with me that my insurance plan will cover all the cost, so I agreed to do it. After about 3 months, I received a bill of $20K from the hospital of this Gastroscopy test and the reason was insurance company refused to pay. I contacted my doctor as he told me it would be covered. He said I should not worried about it and reiterated that insurance company would take care of it. Another 3 months later, I received this bill from hospital again, same reason as the last time. So I contacted the doctor, but this time, I was told he is no longer with this hospital. What should I do regarding to this situation? Should hospital hold responsibility of their words? I cannot afford paying this bill. [link] [comments] |
What happens if you get in a wreck and you have your safety systems turned off? Posted: 08 Nov 2018 05:56 PM PST My father in law is convinced that if you turn off the auto braking and the collision avoidance system in his car (a Honda), that insurance wouldn't cover any potential wrecks. He has State Farm. Is there any truth at all to this statement? [link] [comments] |
The marketplace won’t let us get insurance. Posted: 08 Nov 2018 09:30 PM PST I am in West Virginia. In the past, we tried to get health insurance for my pregnant wife. The marketplace wouldn't allow her to get insurance without for applying for Medicaid, which resulted in her being uninsured for a short period causing us thousands in medical bills. (We didn't qualify for Medicaid) Now, we are in the same situation with our newborn. He is only on my wife's insurance for 31 days. We are forced to apply for Medicaid before going to marketplace, and I think we will likely be denied causing a period where our baby will be uninsured. This doesn't seem right. We are forced to be uninsured for a short period. Medicaid will pay retroactively but insurance does not... TLDR; My wife was uninsured because we were forced to apply for Medicaid costing us thousands. The same is happening for our newborn. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2018 09:15 PM PST Background: Earlier tonight, I (Driver A) was leaving the driveway of a restaurant when the side of my vehicle was struck by another driver (Driver B) after they had been rear ended by a third driver (Driver C), who fled the scene. I immediately called 911 and reported the incident, and was able to get a third party witness to the event to give me their contact information. I then called my insurance company and started a claim while my passenger took photos of the accident scene and the license of Driver B. Fortunately, nobody was injured (a little soreness at worst). After finding out that it would be long time before any police could arrive (first real snowfall of the year and there were lots of accidents), Driver B decided that they needed to "move the car" and left, after making sure we had contact information and photos of their license. After waiting longer and blocking traffic, we called 911 again, and dispatch told me I could file the police report later at the local police station. After getting home, I realized my passenger got Driver B's contact information and a photo of their driver's license but did not get their insurance information. I texted Driver B and asked them to send over the info as soon as possible (I think you can tell where this is going). A few minutes later, I receive a phone call from Driver B explaining that their insurance coverage is lapsed. Driver B assures me they have a good job and that they want to make this right but if possible doesn't want to get in any legal trouble. I have sufficient insurance to cover the collision damage and any medical bills that arise from this. I'm guessing the damage to my car is going to be several thousand dollars. Driver B seems like a pretty good person who is trying to cooperate and has been straightforward and honest, I'd like to not make their life any harder than it already is. Their car is undoubtedly totaled, they got hit much harder than we did, and they did not do anything to cause the accident. Questions:
TL;DR: I was hit by an uninsured driver who is asking to settle this without getting anyone else involved after I already started a claim. Should I settle this off the books or let my insurance take over? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2018 09:04 PM PST House has not been re-built yet and we've received noticed that they are no longer willing to cover us. It's understandable but I'm starting to freak out because Nationwide just rejected our quote with the exact reason being fire claims within the last five years are automatically disqualifying. Renter's insurance issues [NY] Posted: 08 Nov 2018 03:03 PM PST Hi everyone, so long story short, I have had renter's insurance for about just short of a year before it came a time when I had to use it. My house got broken into, I filed the claim, made a police report, the insurance company talked to my fiancee for 'independent verification, and now they are asking me to meet with G4S (which I looked up, is a securities company). Each of their replies to my emails took weeks if not no contact for a month sometimes, and as hard as I tried, I never got to speak to my insurance claims handler. Should I be worried? Will I be finally paid my claim? What exactly should I expect? From my claims handler she said: "They will get a recorded statement from you and (my fiancee's name), and obtain documentation pertinent to this claim". They already got both, and it's been months since I sent them all the documentation they asked for. What exactly is going on here? [link] [comments] |
Vet Mistake - Insurance Claim Question Posted: 08 Nov 2018 08:47 PM PST Long story short our vet gave us the wrong dosage bottle instead of per the prescription, which resulted in our dog overdosing, going through $5k odd of scans and testing, which in the end was for nothing as the answer was right in front of them the entire time. Change his medication to the right dosage and within a few days he's back to normal. They apologised etc, and submitted a claim with the insurers, who contacted us. We wrote a letter of how it all unfolded to them, and they came back to us to cover our vet bills, and $500 USD to cover two trips approx 200 miles each way, which took an unpaid entire day off work each time. They are offering nothing for the fact our dog couldn't walk and looked as good as dead (so looking up funeral dog options, tears etc), we could barely leave the house for a month because we had to take him to the vet a few times so not exactly going to go out for the day to come home and find him dead and whatnot. The offer is based on "not admitting any liability and is a final offer" - of course rubbish given the vet has said a ton of times sorry, done free scans to check liver function due to the OD etc. Although the signs are good we can't guarantee this hasn't done any long term damage. This is the standard insurance game I understand, naturally they're going to pay out the least they can, that's how they make money. Nothing personal just business. We're in Australia. This seems a raw deal given:
All of which stems from this error which the vet has said so many times both verbally + through actions is their fault. I am not wanting to clean them out or anything, as a claim will probably hurt the vet through increased insurance costs. I imagine the idea is throw out a low offer, and if we don't accept they'll threaten a ton of litigation to force us to accept rather than go through a huge amount of hassle to chase a few grand more. As obviously this isn't $100k of damages or anything that might be worth spending energy on. What is the next step in this scenario, do you try and barter a price? Do you try and break down why we want a figure or say "No, we'll accept $x otherwise Y will happen". Or say no we won't accept it, come back with a more realistic offer? Obviously any advice is general in nature and may not be accurate for this situation & country, which is fine we're chasing the general gist of how this process goes down. Thanks in advance! I can’t add my new leased car in the policy I’m in?? Posted: 08 Nov 2018 08:25 PM PST I just leased a brand new car under my name. I'm in a policy with my parents (my dad is the policy holder) with AAA. I went down to my local branch and my agent wasn't in today so they assigned someone else who told me that they would not be able to add the car into our existing policy and that we'd have to add a new policy for myself because I'm the sole owner of the new car. Are they trying to skimp me or there's some sort of law/company policy that doesn't allow this? I also got another quote from State Farm and asked the agent about what they have told me. She said she never heard of anything like that despite being in Insurance for a long time. Can anyone shed some light on this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2018 07:41 PM PST They say they will still consider it totaled, and have sent a check for a partial amount, rest would be paid if i surrender. But if i keep can they still insure it? [link] [comments] |
General Question about Individual Health Insurance Posted: 08 Nov 2018 03:00 PM PST I posted a question about a specific plan here the other day without really learning insurance terminology. Now that I have, I'm terrified. I need some help understanding HMO's. I'd like to stick with my current specialists/primary care, but is the best way of dealing with it to call the insurance providers I have as options and ask to go over my current specialists to see if they're covered? And what would be the title of someone in my area who helps others with finding insurance like this? I want to search around for this sort of person, but I don't even know what they're called. Thanks guys. This subreddit seriously helps people like me who'd be in big trouble otherwise. :) [link] [comments] |
Asking for options before calling insurance claims dept Posted: 08 Nov 2018 04:39 PM PST 2014 Pathfinder S, AZ We were recently in a car accident and dropped off car at collision center (not our fault). I received the quote they sent the insurance (American Family) and estimates are over 11k. We owe approximately that much on the car. I know that are going to be additional cost with repair as they did not list any mechanical issues on the quote. When driving the check engine came on and it sounded like part of suspension was damaged. Kelly Blue book lists the car at close to 11k in perfect condition. The car was repaired last year for an accident, and was also filed with American Family. I would prefer they pay out the car as this is the 2nd accident. Is this an option? Is there anything I can say provide to the agent to get him to file it as a loss? If they try to pay out less because this is the 2nd accident can I then file a diminished value claim for the difference? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |
Uber driver hit my parked car - Raiser and Allstate are not responding Posted: 08 Nov 2018 04:32 PM PST An uber driver hit my parked car while I was in the store. When I came out she gave me all of her info (insurance, policy numbers, drivers license, phone number). She was on her way to pick someone up when she hit my car. I'm wondering if anyone has had to deal with a similar situation through AllState (which is her insurance) and Raiser (who handles Uber's insurance from what I understand)? When I initially called her insurance provider, Allstate said that someone representing Raiser would call me about the accident and to file/create the claim, but it's been two weeks since then. The only phone numbers I can find is an automated message for serious accidents from Uber and a phone number for Raiser that only has a busy signal when I call it. I'm not sure how to get in contact with someone since Allstate can't create a claim for my car - it has to be Raiser... and there seems to be no way to contact them (that I can find). Any advice would be helpful since I'm not sure where to go from here and my car was banged up pretty bad (front wheel well fell, fender was banged up pretty bad,etc).. [link] [comments] |

My husband’s business has three clients that moved to a different state Posted: 08 Nov 2018 02:08 PM PST My husband is a general contractor (LLC, licensed, bonded, insured, all that jazz) in Illinois. Three of his former clients moved to the same town in Missouri and they want him to handle their renovations. He's using all local subcontractors who are licensed, insured, bonded, etc. Last year, he did renovations in Missouri for family. Same deal, no problems. This time, our insurance agent is insisting we need a separate general liability policy for Missouri before he'll sign off with "The City of [X]" as the policy holder because it's in another state. There's nothing in the current policy that limits his company to doing business in Illinois. Missouri has full reciprocity with every license that's held. Did something change? Am I missing something? Is our agent doing a cash grab? Thank you in advance for any assistance from a frazzled wife. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2018 01:15 PM PST Hey all, I was recommended to come here, I have a question regarding what type of insurance I would need for the business I'm trying to start. Location: California, America. I'm trying to start a business where I rent out jumpers and things of the similar sort to parties and events. Does anyone know what type of insurance I would need? I already have a LLC registered, but I know that I need some sort of insurance, but I'm unsure which. Thank you [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2018 11:47 AM PST I purchased a Universal indexed life insurance policy some 10 years ago. Wondering if I should keep it or am I holding onto something not worth it? Policy is Universal indexed life from Athene, $300,000 policy and I pay $110 a month. Cash value would be some $9000 now. Last year, purchased another policy from national life group for 200,000 at $200/month. If I surrender payment, I will be covered for another 3 years until it lapses(which I intend to do). A few weeks ago, I met with my financial advisor who went over the plans and advised me to cancel the two existing plans and put instead that amount into a whole life. Whole life: 300/month for $300,000 policy. My question is, maybe I'm hoarding the athene policy because I've been paying it for so long, I could use the cash value for other means, but want to make sure I'm making the right decision by taking it out. I was told it may not even make sense to put it in and return may not be as great as illustrated. It's not that I don't trust my financial advisor, I just want a second opinion. [link] [comments] |
