At what point is investing in index funds not advisable?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 05:09 PM PDT

Out of curiosity, at what point should someone look into alternatives over simple index or target funds? Like, if you had 50 million, are index funds a bad idea? What is the cut-off? What are the drawbacks at that point?

On fidelity's spreadsheet app, does the total gained amount include dividends received?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:22 PM PDT

When looking at my individual stock account, there is a total at the bottom of the change since purchase column (example: +$1500). Does this include dividends, or just the change in stock price since purchase? Thanks

    Apple Institutional Ownership

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 09:28 PM PDT

Apple ran up from 153 to 230 this year. (just fell), but was curious who the top institutional owners were and found: 1. Vanguard 2. BlackRock 3 Berkshire.

Would it be safe to say Vanguard & BlackRock have those shares divided up between multiple different Mutual funds? The company that really benefited most was Berkshire or do those companies actually individually own 300+ million shares?

I know little to nothing about stocks/investing and have a few questions.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 09:22 PM PDT

So i'm 24 and just got pay bumped up to 49K salaried.

I've always wanted to delve into the world of investing but have no idea where to start. I find apps like across and whatnot to confuse me even more because it doesn't seem like it's investing at all. Where do I actually go to invest? a website? how do I go about building a portfolio? What types of investing should someone as uneducated with investing as myself put money into?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Are iPhone salea flat due to competition or because people put off buying the new model?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 04:38 PM PDT

So iPhone sales have flattened. Why though? Competing sales from Samsung and Google?

    Fidelity 3-fund Portfolio?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 03:21 PM PDT

Been wondering for a while how to better utilize my Fidelity RothIRA. Right now I have about >$8k in my RothIRA, invested 100% in FFNOX. I know a few months ago Fidelity lowered the minimums and expense ratios of most of their premier index funds. What set of funds might I transition my FFNOX holdings to to better utilize my IRA?

Humor: How a friend tried to talk me out of investing

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 04:32 AM PDT

A buddy of mine who is obsessed with buying physical gold and storing it who knows where keeps trying to talk me out of investing. Today he came up to me and said, dude, guess what I just found out! There's a secret thing a buddy of mine told me about how shady the market is. I unenthusiastically asked what it was. He goes, there's a thing called the "after hours". What is that?! Who's this secret society that trades during that time?!

I explained what it was and showed him the many transactions I've done and he just went, oh, dude, you should buy gold right now. 🤦

    Data center REIT's

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 04:26 AM PDT

So based on some googling the 2 largest public data center REIT's are Digital Realty Trust (DLR) and Equinix (EQIX). Now I am relatively new to this scene and have no idea how to even begin doing DD on these... I only want one REIT (this will be 5% of my portfolio). What do I even look at? What are your opinions?

Why have all the European trackers (apparently) made so few profit?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:33 AM PDT

    Hello

I have been looking at the top 6 European trackers here: https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/031616/top-european-equity-exchangetraded-funds.asp

As you can see none of the results of those trackers has a slow increase over the years, on the contrary it looks like in the long run they aren't very profitable. Unlike this one: http://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/etf/snapshot/snapshot.aspx?id=0P0000LZZD (not making any publicity here, just trying to show what I consider as being "profitable in the long run").

Why is that? Personally I like to invest my money in funds for +/- 10 years, but why does it look like investing in European trackers isn't profitable?

    Thanks

    Phil Town (Rule #1) opinions?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 12:53 PM PDT

My dad is taking me to his workshop in Atlanta next weekend (can't complain since it's a free trip). From what I've read, he seems pretty authentic. I work in the financial services (financial planning specifically) industry so I have a sort of high level understanding of most of this kind of stuff. Just wanted to see what the general consensus on Phil Town is, is he legit or is he just another con man, etc. and if anyone has been to one of his workshops it would be cool to hear what to expect. Maybe even some tips to get the most out of it. Thanks!

How To Break Into Real Estate Investing As A Solopreneur

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 02:07 AM PDT

What happens to my calls after company gets bought out?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:07 PM PDT

I currently have calls that don't expire until March in PacBio which was today acquired by Illumina. I've never been in this situation before so I'm not exactly sure what happens to my calls. Do my options transform into Illumina options? Am I just forced to close my position and I get a lump sum? Sorry for what probably sounds like a dumb question, I haven't ever been in this situation before so I don't know what happens.

    Bond ETF vs duration

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 12:41 AM PDT

I am starting to build my portfolio and I am slightly confused with regards to bond ETF and duration. While I understand the concept of a falling yield in a rising rate environment, how do I factor in the bond duration into the equation?

For now, I just want to do some rebalancing to the portfolio as I have about 25 - 30 years till I retire, so my time horizon is quite far. I see bond ETF as a near-term cash equivalent (for emergencies) rather than a true substitute for income due to my time horizon.

Do I invest in short-term, medium or long-term bonds? I live in the eurozone, so I will be looking at some AAA country bonds.

    Why silence on SIR?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:12 PM PDT

So theres this stock ive been watching for a bit called SIR (Select Income REIT). Thing has a Dividend payout of 10.79% (0-0) its 52 week range is 17.90 to 26.26. It's got other companies related to it, such as GOV, real-estate company with mostly government renters. My question is why do i not hear any chatter about this thing? Dividend is pretty damn high, and movement is... not super good, but its better than others. So, why no chatter?

Why does CNBC love bad news?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:28 AM PDT

I feel like everytime they say something positive, they also have to say something negative.

"Dow Rises 500 points! But Fears still loom with China trade tensions"

Or just negative all the time.

    Edit - Literally just happened : https://www.cnbc.com/2018/11/02/stock-market-triple-digit-gains-for-dow-nonfarm-payrolls.html
