What low hanging fruit might businesses run by older folks not be aware of? I'm trying to help my grandmas business that wasn't listed on Google Maps, wasn't getting UPS volume discount, and spends most of their ad budget on the phone book.

I recently got involved with a small business run by my Grandmother. They make and sell their own products and have a good reputation with the local community, but it's managed by older folks. They weren't aware that they were shipping at a volume that made them eligible for shipping discounts from UPS. They hadn't done anything to get themselves listed online, and they're spending $2000+ on phone book ads because the contract has just been auto-renewed forever.

I'm not really a business person so I was wondering if there are any other easy small things to check on that they might not have done.

Edit: I would like to clarify. I have since registered us on google business and we have a website now. I just found out about the phonebook thing recently though and that just blew my mind so I decided to ask about anything else like that.

Social Media Demographics Data - Marketing for your Business

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 03:25 AM PDT

I got promoted to "Global Ventures Manager". But all I do is marketing and try to find companies to cross-promote or partner with. What should my job title actually be?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 04:49 AM PDT

When I got promoted my boss told me I could choose my job title, so I was thinking of something like "Director of Marketing and New Ventures". I wanted to emphasize the most obvious part of my role (marketing) and that I represent a people-focused company that's trying to find new partnerships or new avenues for business (new ventures). He didn't like "New" Ventures because he thought it sounded amateur, like we didn't know what we were doing. He also wanted "Global" in the title because he thinks it makes us look big and important (we have two clients in another country, NBD).

I had no better ideas for my title, so I got stuck with this one, but I think most people will assume I work in venture capital as that's the only place the word venture is used nowadays. Also, my boss is not a native English speaker so I'm afraid he has no idea how my title appears to others. I feel like an idiot putting this on my resume or even in my email signature.
Background: I've had one year of marketing exp, no formal education on it, and I've been working in education for the past 3 years. My boss knows this. My job history/exp does NOT match the caliber of this title.

What should my title actually be?

    EDIT: added important background details

How you stay on top of data about the different aspects of your business?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 02:11 AM PDT

Hi, I am a small business owner and one of the issues I have is to stay on top of all the data about the different aspects of my business:

    * visits to the blog

    * subscriptions to the newsletter

    * sales on different platforms (gumroad & leanpub)

    * data from the accounting software (similar to Freshbooks)

    * conversion rates

Basically I need to get data from different services and process that, for example getting the number of visits from google analytics and the number of subscribers from convertkit or adding the sales from two different platforms.

To do this so far I have built my own dashboards as web applications.

I was wondering what do you do to solve this issue

Advice on when to finish a relationship with a distributor

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 01:42 AM PDT

I'm in the business of importing medical foods to the US. I have a large catalog of products for different diseases and the prices are very competitive. I've been working with a distributor/manufacturer for almost a year. They have helped us with the FDA regulation and we have learned a lot about the process. My question is that after almost a year working with them I haven't closed any deals. We have answered all their questions about the products, regulations, manufacturing practices but no deals. Should I stop working with them and create the same kind of relationship with a competitor? Is this the normal timeframe for this industry in the US?

Need help with Shipping on my website

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:46 AM PDT

We sell furniture. Some of our products are easy to calculate weight and get shipping specially on small fedex stuff. Other products are really hard. So far we don't have a good source of shipping. There is only 1 carrier that is able to help us by giving us the code we need to add to our site so customers can generate shipping quote and buy online. This carrier is actually pretty expensive in some locations, specially for the bulky furniture.

I am sure this is throwing off many customers. Should I turn off shipping quote for bulky items? What have you guys done in situations like this? The whole idea was to make it easy for customers to purchase online and eliminate the calls.

Should I look at what other competitors are doing?

We work with 2 carriers that have great rates but they don't have the code needed to add them to our website as they are smaller companies.

Looking to post prices for my services on my epoxy flooring business - none of my competitors do it. Anyone experienced this? How did it go?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:44 PM PDT

The prices will be posted on our website and anyone will be able to view it. I install epoxy garage floors. It's a fairly new business I'm starting, been doing it for someone else for 10 years.

How to deal with invoices not getting paid?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 04:10 PM PDT

    Hey r/smallbusiness

I work at a small engineering and design firm and we frequently have issues with clients not paying their invoices on time, sometimes taking an extra 30-60 days.

What are some of the methods you guys use to ensure timely payments without losing business? I have no problem having clients sign strict contracts or pay late fees but I'm not sure if it would turn people off or not.

Should I throw in the towel?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:00 AM PDT

I've been in a one man custom craft business for 12 years. Mostly online. My sales were as good as ever during the 2008 slowdown, but in the past three years they've dropped off to almost nil right now. I enjoy my work, and this makes me very sad. I attribute it to companies that have started doing what I do, who can afford people to manage their advertising and social media. I have a chronic illness which makes it difficult for me to work a regular schedule, outside my home. I'm in my early 60s, own my home except for a home equity line of credit, but have no savings. I'm thinking I have to apply for disability, but I'd much rather do my work. What do you think I should do?

Launching a podcast what do I need to know?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 07:10 PM PDT

I'm launching a podcast that documents how I built my business which will include convos with investors, engineers I hired early on and more details like that.

I've created an RSS feed on Libsyn and pushed my podcast to the big platforms like Apple, TuneIn.

Is there any other places that I should be pushing it to? Any tips on SEO for podcast? What are neat practice?

I'm new to this whole thing and was going to use Anchor but felt like that was the easy way out.

    Anything would help!

[sole prop LLC] Risk of paying taxes at the end of the year instead of quarterly.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:09 AM PDT

This year my business finances have gone up and down, and I haven't been able to make the quarterly payments on time. However I've been putting money away on a high yield savings account to pay for the taxes at the end of the year.

Do I run any risk by doing this, such as a penalty from the IRS, or anything you may think of?

how to size a customer market? (where to find info?)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 05:44 PM PDT

Say I have an idea in a certain area such as electric scooters, how does one size the market? How many units have been sold in the past year? And how does one size the market of how many people may be buying one next year or in the next 5 years?

Are there sites with market estimations? Surveys?

People in the alcohol sales business

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:34 PM PDT

I'm in Canada and have a product (less than 8% ABV) that I want to start having the public try and get their opinions, so trade shows, beer fests, etc.

How does one start with a little amount of product without blowing a ton of money on renting out a brewery in order to make your product legal to sell. I read about a special occasion license but im not sure if you still can't have your product brewed at home. I don't want to sell for profit at the moment, although it would be nice. I just want see public response.

Could I consult bars around the area to see if they want to carry the product and then if so, move into production?

    Any advice is appreciated

How do apartment rental businesses work?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 05:04 PM PDT

I don't have much knowledge in real estate investing so excuse my ignorance. I've had friends who've rented out their house or condo and hardly made cashflow renting it out. They made money when selling it but these companies seem to not be selling. Instead they buy an apartment building to rent it out for cash. Im wondering how they make enough money doing that while having a mortgage to pay and the employees, property taxes etc.

How should I spend my money?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 03:46 PM PDT

    ---crossposting from marketing sub

    Hi redditors,

I operate a small business in addition to my day job where I charge clients to review, revise, and edit their personal statements for college applications. You can check out my site and blog here: koodooslearning.com. My average rate is about $50 per customer and I'm hoping to bring in about $1200 revenue per month.

I'm having a hard time driving traffic to my site and blog organically (I average 5-10 unique visits per day now and have a 5.18% CTR via Google), but also don't have a huge marketing budget. I'm hoping to spend around $50 a month on advertising or marketing online for now, but I don't have a clue as to what marketing strategy I should adopt that maximizes my budget.

Any ideas or tips for building my customer base and blog visits using marketing techniques?

I've used Facebook's "boost posts" feature before on other projects and saw some moderate success. I'd rather not boost posts again though and instead focus on driving traffic to my site, specifically my blog and services page.

Employee stole $2000 but we can't fire him

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 03:35 PM PDT

My family owns a small car dealership in which we have one mechanic, one bodywork guy, and a salesman. We discovered months ago that the mechanic had used the corporate card to make unauthorized purchases totaling over $2000 - car parts for his own projects, paying his personal cellphone bill, you name it. We pay him $25/hr, and half of the time (if he comes in at all), he spends talking on the phone, meeting with his customers (he has his own shop on the side), and taking his sweet time on errands.

Today, for example, he clocked in 8 hours. 2 of those hours, he claimed to have spent dropping off payment for an engine we ordered. Another 2 hours, he supposedly went to unlock said engine at the junk yard, but he came back to our shop empty handed. That's 4 hours total he clocked related to this engine, and at the end of the day we didn't even have the item in our possession. He also spent another hour getting a tool from an O'Reilly that's 10 miles from our shop, when there's literally Advanced Auto and another O'Reilly 5 minutes down the road. If you ask him about it, he can make up a million excuses as to why he took so damn long, why he went where he did, etc.

Currently we've recovered around $500 of the $2000 he owes, but with the time he steals from us, it's unlikely we're even really getting anything back. He's belligerent when we tell him we're deducting any amount he owes from his paycheck, as if we're the ones stealing from him. The most frustrating part is that we can't fire him because we have too many unfinished projects and have been unable to find another reliable mechanic. And even with all his experience, lots of cars are returned to us because he missed things the first time around, or failed to actually fix things he said he did (our salesman REALLY appreciates this, lmao).

I needed to vent today because with my parents gone, I've been in charge of managing him and doing his payroll. And working with him is an absolute nightmare. I am SO CLOSE to bringing every car we have, finished or not, to the auction and letting them go at whatever price we can get, because seriously fuck this guy.

If anyone has a similar experience to share (for your sake I hope not), feel free to.

Found someone using my trademark. Best course of action?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 07:49 AM PDT

I trademarked a name I plan to release as the name of a mobile app in the app store as well as my companies name.

The app is not available to the public yet but I have the name reserved in iTunes. Due to not being publicly available yet, I have an 'Intent of Use' trademark and am not officially registered yet but have a live filing.

I just saw on the app store a new app using my trademark name with an keyword appendage (e.g) 'trademark - useful app' and a website using my trademark with a .org domain.

Their product is very similar to mine and I believe would cause confusion on app store searches and google searches.

Is it worth reaching out to them and asking them to change it on my own. Or should I not do anything without a lawyer and go with a cease and desist to start? I could also reach out to Apple to request them change their name as it infringes my mark. Is waiting an option (maybe I can wait to challenge it until it actually starts causing me a problem)?

What are my best options and my risks? I dont want to spend too much money fighting them but am worried a simple email from me wont be enough and can entangle me in a legal battle.

Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks.

Cleaning company will not pay its workers

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 10:21 AM PDT

Our company utilizes the cleaning services of a small cleaning company. Last week, one of the workers accidentally locked an office door and we had to bring in a locksmith to get it open. Our company notified the cleaning company that we will deduct the locksmith bill amount from the cleaning bill. A few days ago, I received a sob email from the owner of the cleaning company about how the workers will not get paid and how they already make so little.

The owner is an American and the workers are all immigrants who barely speak English - its not a family business. Shouldn't companies be able to handle incidentals like this without resorting to not paying their workers? Also, I don't know how they are employed, whether W2 or 1099 or cash. Just trying to get some perspective...

Edit: How would you respond? We'd prefer to keep using them.

    Rewarding Good Employees

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:13 AM PDT

As we are approaching the holiday season I started thinking about how to reward my best employees for the holiday / end of year. When i worked for others I always appreciate physical gifts much more than monetary payments so I would like to give a physical gift. What do you think would be a good physical gift for grown men? These are all technicians in a service business.
