    Car insurance Question

    Posted: 03 Nov 2018 01:17 AM PDT

    Hello,

I just bought a second vehicle, and I am reevaluating my insurance options.

At present I have a 2005 Corolla, which is on a salvage title and is cosmetically a wreck but runs very well.

I also just got a 1998 Silhouette which seems to have a clean title, but has three big oil leaks, and is bad at starting. I don't know the vehicles full history to know if it has any accidents on the record.

I am currently paying for full coverage on the Corolla, and liability only on the van. I am insured through State Farm.

Should I reverse this? Due to their age should I get liability only? My rate is over $200 right now, so I want to quickly make a decision about this, and I really appreciate your help and input!

Dealership damaged brand new car - before it left the lot

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:06 AM PDT

    (In Texas)

I purchased a car on Monday - yay! - a brand new, 2019 Jeep Cherokee with 46 miles on it. I had a ton of issues with the dealership and the sales department (I'm a 22 year old woman and a first time car buyer, so unfortunately not shocked), but the car was a good deal and after looking at it and driving a different Cherokee around all weekend, I signed the paperwork and the car was off to be detailed. While I was waiting for my car to be detailed and delivered to me, the salesman came up to me and told me the maintenance team backed my new car into something. There are dents in the the bumper and body, and the paint was scratched for 10-12 inches. I was pissed, and was reassured that everything would be repaired within the week. I was given a loaner car for the time being.

Come today, I am told the car had to be sent to a body shop to be repaired, and it's going to be another week before I receive it. I'm absolutely livid, and asked the dealership if I can cancel the entire transaction, considering I haven't even driven the car, and they said there is no way since paperwork has already been pushed through.

What can I do here? Is it my best bet to just ask for some money back or can I fight for a full refund for entire purchase considering I never acquired the car?

Should I continue fighting about my car accident with the semi truck or go to small court claims?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:25 AM PDT

Posted here about a month ago regarding an accident I had with a semi truck on the highway. He sideswiped my camry and I didn't file a police report at that time (I regret that now). Mexico's drivers license and invalid insurance as well.

Update: They finally had their new insurance contacted me and I told my version of the story and his insurance kept asking me if there were cameras/witnesses and I said no. He concluded that "since there were no witnesses or cameras, we're gonna send you a denial letter." His version is we were merging and the car next to mine swerve into my lane and I swerved into his, which doesn't even make sense because my driver's side is BENT IN and my rear mirror didn't even fall off. I am dumbfounded that this is an insurance company because it doesn't take a brain to realize that if you're going straight and a car swerve into your lane, it would've left a straight kind of mark on the car. The next day, I called again saying I need the denial letter to go to small court claims and asked to verify the story again. The insurance said the driver stated I changed lanes right in front of him on the highway while merging and I told him "are you sure it's changing lanes" and he goes "you swerved into his lane" so I asked "is it changing lanes or swerving" and his insurance said "changing lanes or swerving is the same thing." I asked if they could write down the drivers statement since they have mine and he goes "I'll send you a denial letter" and I said "I understand, but if you're going to deny my claim, you're going to have write why you're denying my claim" and he said "yeah, I'll write you a denial letter."

I spoke to my friend (used to work for a car insurance company) and he said it's impossible that I hit him on the highway because if that was the case, my car would've spun because it's a lot smaller than the semi truck and I would've most likely be in the hospital or dead.

The only reason why I want justice done is because they've been toying with me for 2 months. I spoke to California highway patrol and they told me that his Mexico's drivers license is invalid, but if he has a permit to temporarily be here then it's considered valid. I don't know anything about the legal system. I don't know how to prove my case even though it's very obvious what happened and I don't know if I should continue fighting with their insurance to avoid small court claims. My friend already found a flaw in his claim about the location of the accident, but I haven't said anything yet. I'm hoping they're doing something illegal and doesn't show to court so I would win. Should I go to small court claims or continue fighting with their insurance?

Car was hit. File through my insurance or other person's?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:14 AM PDT

This is my first insurance claim so I have no idea how it works. My car was hit while parked. I got the information of the other vehicle and filed a police report. Should I go through the other driver's insurance or mine for repairs?

I'm a self-employed young professional starting my software development career. Long-term, how can I protect myself from loss-of-income due to injury?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 05:19 PM PDT

Title says most of it, really. My desk job is my only source of substantial income. I'm healthy and young, so it makes sense to lock-in good rates. Does anyone have any advice on this issue? How do these claims usually end up? Is there anything in particular I should pay attention to other than carpal tunnel, back injuries, eye injury?

    Thanks!

    House flooded

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 05:15 PM PDT

Hey everyone- to start this off I have nationwide and have already called servepro and they're here drying everything up.

So the toilet main hose (goes from the valve to the toilet) broke and the full force of the water went through the drywall and flooded the main floor. All seeped through into the finished basement through the ceiling.

What do I need to do to ensure I don't get screwed out of a bunch of money?

Risk vs. Benefit of Filing Auto Claim(s)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 09:04 AM PDT

TL;DNR: need some body work done before turning in a leased vehicle. Is it worth it to go through insurance or pay myself in this instance?

Through the course of our lease we've accumulated a few dings, dents, and scratches that need to be repaired prior to turning the vehicle in. I've had it estimated at about $3,000 by two body shops. I would prefer not to have to pay that much, but I'm wondering what the long term effects of going through my insurance would be.

I called them, and due to the damage being on both sides, they said I'd need to file two claims and thus pay two deductibles. So I'm out $1000 either way. They also said that while they cannot give an estimate to what my new rates would be, there are a couple factors that would certainly work against me; namely filing two claims in the same year, and have claims paid over $500 from the insurance company.

Our driving record is otherwise clean, no other accidents or auto claims in the past.

I've read that insurance rate can rise anywhere from 20-60% after claims and stay up there for years. Being pessimistic, if my rates when up 60% for more than 2 years it would be cheaper to not use insurance, but if it were in the 20% range for less than 10 years it'd be cheaper to go through insurance.

    Any thoughts or advise?

    Car insurance question.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 04:12 PM PDT

This is gonna sound ridiculous but bear with me. I got into a minor fender bender the other day (no injuries, just cosmetic damage, no tickets) and have a couple concerns. I'm currently trying to enlist in the navy, and legal action could be an issue. I already know that I'm fine if the other person just files a claim, but if the want to sue or go to court then I've got a problem. How often do insurance claims go to court? If it helps I have no intention of trying to fight the claim or anything, and I'll openly admit the accident was my fault, and I'm more than happy to pay up.

Other insurance company marked me at fault, how do I fix this?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 07:28 AM PDT

Without writing a wall of text, in September of 2017 I was hit by another driver. The driver then decided to run from the scene of the accident. I chased the driver down and got his make, model, and license plate information. I filed a police report and showed the police officer my dash cam video.

I ended up finding the driver / his insurance company (It was a special auto policy through AIG), and the driver agreed to that he would accept fault.

His insurance company, AIG, paid to have my car fixed, and agreed that he was at fault.

However, AIG wouldn't fairly compensate me in regards to loss of wages / diminished value of my car, so I had to sue the person who hit me in small claims court. AIG settled with me prior to it going in front of a judge.

I'm shopping around for a new auto insurance company, and discovered that they claimed that I was at fault for the accident. I just tried emailing the adjuster at AIG and his email bounced.

How in the hell do I fix this?

    Totalled Car

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:17 PM PDT

I'm in Texas. I was in a car accident. The other driver was found at fault by police report and insurance. My car was totalled by a claim adjuster who offered $3100 to take the car and $2400 if I decide to keep it with a salvage title. I just needed to send my car title that I only got today. It was driveable after I replaced the radiator and headlights but yesterday it died on me. The transmission is shot and repairs are $1400. So now I want to call insurance and tell them I changed my mind and I need them to pick up a car that doesn't run anymore. Are they going to come get it and give me the original $3100, or are they gonna say I already ask for a salvage title and I'm only getting $2400 or even less on top of being stuck with a dead car in my parking spot?

Root Insurance: Full coverage, car was stolen, they said my policy only allows for the payout of actual cash value and no negotiation is possible

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:44 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

My car was stolen back in 9/18/2018, it was a 1996 Nissan 240SX, very well taken care of, almost showroom condition, I use Root for my insurance since it's the cheapest I could find for full coverage. After over a month, they contacted me yesterday and offered to pay me $4500-ish, they said it was around $3000 something for the car(can't remember exact numbers), and they added the extra $1000 on top for the custom parts. I told them I wanted to negotiate for fair market value, and the agent on the phone (named Grant) sounded very fine and okay with it. So I went home after my classes are over with, searched up over 10 examples that goes for over $14,000 that are in similar conditions and a crap tons more that goes for $5000 that is in significantly worse conditions, called him and he said he spoke with his upper management and they told him to tell me that the offer they give me is FIRM, because apparently my policy only agreeds to pay the actual cash value. I'm wondering if this is legal for insurance companies to do, because I thought they were supposed to base their payout according to the market value? I did not tell them I'd accept it, only that I'd review the policy and perhaps seek help from experts and/or lawyers.

Car accident - auto vs. health insurance

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:15 AM PDT

I was in a car accident 10 months ago in Ohio. The other party (GEICO) accepted full liability but they do not pay anything until the claim is settled. My auto (State Farm) medical payment coverage is $5,000. My medical bills to date total around $22k and I am still actively treating for herniated and bulging discs in my cervical spine. State Farm says they can send me a check for the $5k and I can pay the bills myself and then put the rest through my health insurance. My health insurance says to let State Farm pay the $5k to the hospital and then send the rest to my health insurance. Everyone will eventually get their money back from GEICO.

I am around $600 from meeting my out of pocket max for my high deductible health insurance plan but this includes medical bills unrelated to the accident. If I take the $5000 from State Farm, ask the medical providers to bill my health insurance for everything outstanding, and pay my remaining out of pocket max - what happens to the remaining $4400? Will GEICO take that into account when everyone is subrogating or how does this work?

    Thanks for your help!

Need advice for a coworker, Health Insurance

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 10:04 AM PDT

So a coworker of mine recently turned 26 back in September and thus had to leave his parents health coverage plan. He got promoted to Full Time right around the same time and signed up for insurance a little after that during company's open enrollment period. The problem he is facing now is that he has developed a medical issue that would require the use of imagining equipment that would result in a very high bill without insurance. He has been holding off and enduring his illness because according to him, his insurance wont take effect tell the 1st of December. Is there anything legal wise that could be utilized so he can get treatment now or is it all based on the company? Any help would be appreciated.

Floor Damage - Too much money from homeowners insurance?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 05:12 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I had some water damage occur to a small section of my floor. I filed a claim with my homeowners and was given a check to replace my entire bottom floor rather than just the small section of the kitchen that's damaged.

Rather than replace my entire bottom floor (all flooring is contiguous through bottom floor and hallways), I had planned to cut out the damaged section of the kitchen and replace with tile. Reason being I think this looks better and seems more practical as spills frequently occur in the kitchen, and with tile there will be mo worries about water messing up the floor again in the future.

What do I do in this situation? Do I contact the insurance company and explain this, or do I have to replace the entire bottom floor the homeowners insurance decided to cover?

    Thanks.

Product Liability Insurance for a Clothing Manufacturer

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 06:13 AM PDT

My wife recently started a small business manufacturing clothing for babies and toddlers. Enter our first roadblock and barrier to entry... Product Liability Insurance. We've talked to a handful of insurance agencies and brokers, but no one will offer us a policy to cover her products.

Based on our initial research, it seems like we need to conduct product testing and obtain certification from the CPSC. Now this is starting to sound expensive.

Even if we go through one of the qualified labs to obtain certification for her products, how do we find an insurer who will honor this certification? Do you know of any insurers who specialize in textiles? +1 for suggestions specific to products for babies and kids.

I appreciate your help! My wife is feeling absolutely defeated at this point, as this has been her dream for many years.
