Should I hire a lawyer to put together a contract?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 01:39 PM PST

I'm starting a small digital marketing firm and need to create a contract that goes over the scope of the provided work along with the agreed upon payment model (monthly). Do you suggest getting a lawyer to draft this pretty simple statement of work (contract), or are there online templates that should cover it for now?

    Thanks in advance!

Texting clients instead of calling - unprofessional faux pas or legitimate practice?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 10:49 PM PST

I seemed to conduct a lot of my early business through facebook messenger and text messaging. As a millenial, I just felt it was more convenient for everyone involved - there was no pulling people away from a task and no urgency behind the contact. However as I've moved forward with networking I've noticed a lot of people I network with still prefer phone calls or face-to-face meetings even if they're absolutely swamped.

I'm curious to see what other small business owners think and if there's actually a divide in the way generational business owners communicate. What are your thoughts?

Buying a business: “Just pay me the first year’s profits.”

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 12:51 PM PST

I currently work at a pizza shop, the owner has casually offered to sell it to me if I pay him the first years profits.

My question here is very specific to the legal and accounting aspects: how do I make this work?

The challenges are that the guy has not kept books ever, has at least one under the table employee(me), is generally an unpleasant guy to work with.

Also, I'll be assuming an operating business, should I assume ownership of the banking accounts or start new ones? I'm also concerned that this place may have undisclosed loans or be used as collateral.

I have an experienced restaurant owner who has offered to introduce me to his lawyer. Will also be looking for a book keeper.

Who has been through a similar situation and has advice relevant to paragraph 2?

Getting more of the ‘good’ clients?? Advice?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 01:18 PM PST

    Hey guys.

I started a video production company/ social media content creation company this year. Anything video related that's me. Trading less than 12months currently done about €15K in sales.

Still studying full time, and working a part time job so I'm happy enough with that.

I am looking for advice on how to go about getting good clients? The majority of my work so far approx 10jobs has been once of videos made for websites etc. repeat business hasn't come as of yet. All of my work has come through word of mouth, or cold calls.

Just spent the entire morning cold calling construction companies, and having a wonderful time hearing that of the 20 calls made, 3 have emails to follow up on and the rest were simply not available. My cold call skills havnt been great, but I'm learning.

How do I break into companies, knock down doors to get more clients in the system while trying to eliminate the time wasters?Limited budget but willing to spend a certain amount of necessary. I've dabbled with Facebook advertising, cold calling and SEO, yet word of mouth has been the most effective.

About to graduate college in May, and trying to line up things right so that I can migrate into this business or make the decision that I should park it.

    Thanks in advance!

    Laundromat for sale near me

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:51 PM PST

Anyone here own a small town laundromat? Population is about 3500. It's the only one in town. I'll do my due diligence but just curious how worthwhile this industry is if I want to be 95% absentee. I own three other businesses but those break even in January, February, June and July. It's just the industry. The idea of something that's consistent no matter the season is appealing.

Crowdsourcing advice on SMM. Promoting hot product (10ft charging cable) to Facebook. Never done any FB marketing

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:17 AM PST

Please don't fill my inbox with "buy my course" or "ill help you turn $1 into $100 just PM me back"

    Background:

We are an Import and Distribution company we sell to Gas Stations, Truck Stops, Small Chain Grocery Stores, Pharmacies, Value Stores, other distributors, etc.... We sell "Impulse Goods" AKA Novelty Items. We import our own cell phone chargers and accessories and a handful of other items. We do a little over 3 million a year in revenue. We also sell some of our goods on Amazon and have grown that business also. PPC marketing is fairly easy and straightforward on Amazon.

    Product:

I saw a 10ft charging cable in my travels last year and knew it would be a great C-Store item. So I sourced them from China, sourced a rack to put them on in the stores and we have sold nearly a million cables this year. This one item has pretty much made taken our year from great to exceptional.

    Heres our mockup: https://imgur.com/a/W8XZ9li

Heres what it looks like in real life: https://imgur.com/a/61wMmqU

    Need:

I want to sell this B2C via a Shopify site that we just created. https://10footcables.com/ and that is where I want to crowdsource information and best practices from the community. I need help with pretty much everything I should be doing to market this B2C. It seems the best solution would be to use FB ads to send traffic to the website, then fine tune that traffic to lower the ACOS. I have read online at various sources and I'm really looking for easy to follow and clear-cut instructions.

In return, I want to share what I learn from everyone here, and my results with everyone here in hopes that it will help others in the future.

    I'm ready to start today!

I have the Shopify site setup, I have the FB page setup. I have money to spend on FB ads. I have the product to ship.

What one thing (asset, service, system) is your business completely reliant on?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 11:16 PM PST

For example, a single POS that if it went down would take away your ability to earn more revenue until it is fixed.

Best business CC for airline miles?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:45 AM PST

We spend $4-5k a month on small purchases from some consistent sources (mostly county document fees) which are all at $20-50 a pop. Right now we use a debit card (yes I know the security issues, ours is very secure, we've had that discussion before) but it's making my book keeper go nuts with hundreds of these small transactions. So my plan is to get a CC that is dedicated to these purchases but I want to get one that gets me some good rewards, specifically travel.

    Any suggestions?

Help with marketing ideas - frozen food delivery

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 09:05 PM PST

I have a one man (me) consulting business that helps small and medium sized businesses keep their costs down (Office supplies, merchant processing, construction, payroll and a bunch of other things etc.)

I have a client t that wants me to create and execute a marketing plan to help them gain more sits.

They are a home food delivery service. Basically they sit with homeowners and discuss how they are currently buying their food (specifically meats) and basically try and get them better quality food for a lower price that is delivered to their house in bulk (6 months of food at a time) sounds crazy but it actually works and they have been pretty successful.

I'm trying to see if anyone here may have any ideas of how I can get them in front of some more people. I have a few ideas currently, one is marketing to crossfit owners to help us market to their members (I have received the go ahead from the only gym I have spoken t outlook so far. I am also going to have contest boxes placed into local high volume stores.

Outside of marketing online. What else do you think could work? Again the end user are individual families. Thanks for the help in advance, looking forward to hearing your ideas!

Help Me Understand UK LTD Company Pension vs. Corporation Tax

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:52 AM PST

Ok, let me setup a hypothetical company to see if I've understood correctly.

UK Limited Company with one 100% shareholder/director and no employees.

    Turnover = 20,000

    Sales costs = 5,000

    Gross Profit = 15,000

    Director's Salary = 8,160

    Allowable Expenses = 2,160

    Taxable Profit = 4680

    Corporation Tax @ 19% = 748.80 (749)

I know these figures aren't necessarily realistic, but they serve my purposes.

Now, as I understand it, pension contributions are an allowable expense, so assuming the director is happy with a salary of 8160, what's to stop him making a pension contribution to himself of 4680 (into, say Nest) to bring the taxable profit down to 0? I understand that there is a 40k per annum cap on pension contributions, or up to 100% of the salary, which in this case would be 8160. This annual contribution of 4680 is nowhere near either of those. Why would this director need to pay any corporation tax if he could make the pension contribution instead?

    What have I missed?

    Thanks

    Buying out my partner?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:45 PM PST

I started a company six months ago with a friend. We split shares 70/30 with him having 30%. He has gotten quite busy with other work over the last few months and hasn't been contributing to the business, and recently decided that he doesn't want to continue with any of his duties. That's all good but I would prefer to buy him out in that case.

Our company isn't profitable yet. I expect it will take another 4-5 months to break even. So I'm wondering how I can go about coming up with a number to offer him? Is this something I should ask our lawyer about? If it matters, I've invested about 60k at this point and will now have to pay someone to do his work. He hasn't invested anything.

We're still on good terms and I don't expect that to change since we are both discussing this openly. Just looking for opinions.

Deploying OS to server and installing virtualization software on server

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:00 PM PST

May I ask if it is possible to load and deploy an Operating System onto a server for a small business? If yes, is it possible to purchase the license on online platforms? Thanks

Is it possible to install Windows Virtual PC on a server? If not, any recommendations of virtualization software to deploy on a server for an SME? Thanks

    Edit:

The server will be a dedicated server onsite and we plan on purchasing virtualization software too but not sure which to purchase.

There will be a database, file and email software installed on the server too.

I was thinking of buying the domain I want (which I know is available) from google domains or go daddy. Better options?? I'm planning on using Wordpress for the site (yes I have read how it is hated) I think it would work best for my purposes and didn't think I could but it through them. Any help would be much appreciate!!

    Financial Channel

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 02:44 PM PST

I'm starting a youtube channel centered around teaching young people about finance, business, and making money in general. I currently have a channel from 2015 that has gaming videos on it, 2.2k dead subs, and 600k views. It probably has about 2-5 people on it that would still consider watching my videos. Should I use this channel for SEO purposes because it has some channel authority already or start a new channel fresh? I would brand the channels the exact same and delete almost all my older videos. Let me know what you think and if you've made this decision before!

    Payroll Question

    Good evening all:

Working on a project for school and presenting in front of a group of execs from a major Payroll company. I was wondering if there was anything inside your HRIS software, regarding payroll, that you would like to see implemented, or changed, in your system.

    Appreciate any and all input.

My first bounced check -- seeking advice, ancedotes, anything you have to offer to help guide me through this process

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 12:39 AM PST

Sorry for the wall-o-text. This is part rant, part seeking advice. Got my first real life lesson in running a business.

I do handyman work (specializing in TV mounting and furniture assembly). I linked up with this couple that recently moved into their new apartment in Beverly Hills. Did some work for them which turned into a nightmare. I had to do a lot of research so I could safely perform some of the tasks, I had to go shopping for hardware (that I rolled into the job quote), and it was nearly impossible for them to confirm appointments, even missing a couple. If I calculated my "per hour" rate with all the time i put into these guys, it'd be shameful. On my last day with them, they asked if they could write a check because they didn't have cash on them at that moment. Flustered and tired, I just said yeah. Anything to be done with these guys. Plus they live in Beverly Hills and have some nice things, it didn't feel sketchy.

Of course ... Two weeks later, my bank bounces back the check and charges me a fee. Reason says issuing bank could not locate an account for that check.

With all that said, I could use your two cents. Predictably, they're not responding to my texts and calls. Granted, it's only been a week, but I feel like if I haven't heard back from them by now, I'm probably not going to for awhile. Should I just fast track it to the next level? Or be patient? What is that next level? Should I take it to law enforcement for them to deal with it as a criminal matter? Or try my luck at small claims?

It's only $200, a small amount for many. But I'm already operating at a loss with this client. And it's also a sizeable chunk of money for my new business.

    Thanks in advance!

Drafting next year's budget, butterflies in my stomach about marketing again, how does everybody else cope with this?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 07:32 AM PST

I struggle SO much with marketing my small business. It's the one thing that I have enormous trouble budgeting for because it seems more art than science and ROI is therefore unpredictable. Over the last three years, I've continued to shy away from it, just occasionally dipping a toe in with the occasional Facebook or Reddit ad. My sales volume is tiny, but has gradually increased due to a combination of word of mouth (community building) and SEO, and maybe the few ads I've done. I've ended each year at a net loss, although a smaller loss each year which is the correct trend. This year my net loss will be less than $1k.

I want to do consistent Facebook (and maybe Reddit) ads next year to bring my sales up. Based on my toe-dipping exercises, I think I should budget $15/day for Facebook and $5/day for Reddit. I know that I won't see results right away, and I'll have to do A/B testing. No problem with any of that. What I struggle with is knowing if I'm forecasting the resulting revenue too conservatively or completely unrealistically.

My average online sales this year has been $265/month and my average order amount is $35. Am I being too conservative to forecast my sales increase due to the advertising as:

    • 1/2 of an average order each month for the first couple months
    • 1 additional order/month for the next few months
    • 2 additional orders/month for the next few months after that
    • 3 additional orders/month for the last few months of the year

If you don't have advice, can you commiserate? :) This makes me so nervous because the marketing total spend will be $7300 but the total ROI will only be a hair under $700, putting me back at a large net loss for the year. Ack!

    Resolving an unpaid invoice

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 06:51 AM PST

    Good morning,

I worked for a client for 1.5 years and invoiced them directly for my consulting work done through my S-Corp.

Somewhere along the way an invoice went unpaid for an amount that's very common (most of my invoices were billed for the same amount, which is 40 hours of work).

I saved images of each check, but did not save all the stubs (the stubs say this check # is for these invoice #s), which makes it very difficult to reconcile given that 3/4 of my invoices are for the same amount.

I have since moved on to another client and am working with a very kind AP clerk to see which invoice was unpaid. AFAIK I have no way to pinpoint which specific invoice was unpaid because of my poor record-keeping, which means i'm kind of at her mercy.

Should we not be able to reach a resolution through that channel I feel like I have no recourse for seeking compensation through small claims or other channels given my inability to say exactly which invoice was unpaid, is this correct?

    Thanks.

P.S. Get a CPA ASAP and pay them to make sure you don't do dumb things like this. I wish I wouldn't have waited to do so, but that's the price of learning sometimes.

Need to borrow at a low % rate

    Posted: 20 Nov 2018 10:18 AM PST

Does anyone know of a good place to get low interest capital? I really just need NET 60 terms at low interest to pay my suppliers before customers pay me on NET30/45.

Maybe a credit line would be better but I need something in the 1-3% range. Margins in my equipment sales industry are fairly low, ie. 5-15% range.
