    Auditor turned analyst

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 01:24 PM PST

Hey all, I'm a former Big 4 auditor turned analyst at a tech startup in Los Angeles. I'm thinking about starting a blog in which I share my experiences at Big 4 and the transition out. The purpose of this blog is to share insights and advice around navigating the Big 4 career path, what I currently do in tech, and everything in between. Is this something current students and Big 4 professionals would be interested in? Please feel free to suggest topics you'd like to hear more about!

Has anyone tried using super fast CPA and found that it worked or didn't work for them? I'm considering trying it but I haven't heard too much about it.

Is Big4 salary usually lower than mid-tier?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 06:59 PM PST

I was really lucky to finally secure 3 offers from 2 Big 4 firms and 1 mid-tier (RSM/BDO/GT) firm.

I was kind of surprised at the starting salary offers from the 2 Big 4s: one at 56k and the other at 54k

    VS.

The 62k salary offer at the mid-tier and 1k signing bonus

(Other benefits and cpa bonus/reimbursement comparable)

Do you guys know if this is a usual thing just because they have the brand prestige? Did they not like me enough to offer me a higher salary?

[CAN] Seeking Advice: Is accounting worth it for me?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 01:41 PM PST

I'm 26 years old and considering going back to school.

I took accounting as an elective in college and really enjoyed it! I heard it was boring so I didn't really expect to, but I love working with numbers and it just seemed to click so I've been considering pursuing it. With that being said, I know it's a lot of work and a big commitment and I already feel like I'm way behind in life.

I've spent a lot of time watching/reading people's experiences with accounting, why to go into it, why not to, but ultimately I just feel lost. Part of me wants to go for it because I feel like I would enjoy it, but I can't help but feel nervous reading all the negative posts on here about becoming an accountant in Canada.

Would really appreciate any honest advice!

    Professional accountants' opinions needed

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 04:21 PM PST

I know this is kind of short notice, but hey, sometimes inspiration comes slowly. So, I'm giving a PowerPoint presentation in one of my accounting classes on Monday. The topic is "Compare and contrast careers in Big 4 vs. mid-level/regional firms." It really should be Big 4 vs. any firm not Big 4. Anyway, I don't want to stand up there for 8 minutes and talk about salaries and travel and educational requirements. Nobody wants to hear that shit. You remember giving those presentations, with half the class falling asleep, and the other half staring at the floor, or their desk, or out the window. Don't make me do that, please.

All I need is one or two sentences. The shorter the better. If it's easier, you can just fill in the blanks of the template below.

"I work in (type of accounting) at a (size firm). I've been doing it for (number) years and (something real)."

"Something real" can be anything you want. Like what's one thing you know now, that you wish you'd known when you were an accounting major starting your senior year of college? I appreciate your help (and I'm sure my classmates will too).

    Please help! Internship advice?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 09:08 AM PST

Hi guys. I got an internship offer for Spring 2019 tax season from a small CPA firm and accepted it because it was the only offer I got. In retrospect, I probably made a mistake. I saw all of my friends getting internships and I felt like I was going to be unemployable upon graduation (stupid, I know). The thing is I graduate in May 2021 with 150 credits, so I still have plenty of time for internships.

Anyway, I want to renege is because Intermediate Accounting has terrible pass rates at my school, and one of the best professors is teaching it next semester. He probably won't be teaching until the following spring if I do decide to hold off on that. I feel like maybe I should be proritizing my classes now.

The problem is that I got the internship through my school's career center. If I renege, I won't be able to use their career services (job listing websites, career events, etc.) which is actually where most students get their internships and full-time jobs. Also, the internship is in tax, which I don't see myself doing in the future. I just applied for it because I thought it would help me see what tax is like and maybe help me in the future if I decide to switch career paths from audit to tax. Also, I see myself working at a mid-sized firm or B4, not a local CPA firm.

Please help! Is there any way I can get my career center to empathize with me? Or should I just bite the bullet and do the internship?

    Confused

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 10:00 PM PST

I'm currently Studying BBA final year in India. Next year I want to pursue my masters in accounting from US. But some people are saying that without CPA you will not get jobs. Is that true? What are the benefits of doing masters in accounting. Will I get job opportunities after my masters. I don't want to do CPA.

Taking last part of CPA (BEC) in two days. How to spend final hours?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 09:55 AM PST

This is my last part, I've been hitting the MCQ's pretty hard using Wiley and Becker. I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the operations stuff as a higher level, but the review content loses me when they go super into detail. My plan is to review another 250 MCQ today. Any advice for the day before the exam?

Contacted a firm in NYC 2 months ago about working there and they want to bring me in for an interview when I'm in the area in December. They told me to get in touch "closer to the time" to set a firm time for the interview. When should I email them next? 2 weeks beforehand? 3?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 08:57 AM PST

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but I'm really nervous about this interview and I just want everything to go as well as possible.
