I was strongly encouraged to “undercharge my hours” this week

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:08 AM PST

I checked the policy, and charged absolutely everything I am entitled to charge. I don't care what the manager says, the partner and the firm need to know how long it takes to do a job.

    In before shit feedback. Lol.

I got in touch with a recruiter at BDO and was almost immediately offered a behavioral interview with a couple partners with the expectation that I would be offered a job when I graduate. Are there any red flags here?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 06:48 PM PST

That seemed almost too easy. And I don't want to brag, I just want to try and figure out if they're understaffed or of turnover is really high, this just seems super quick. I didn't even apply for anything. We just connected on LinkedIn, he asked for my resume, then he set me up with this behavioral interview, which based on glassdoor looks like the last step before an offer. I'm currently working in audit at a small firm while in grad school if that makes a difference.

    Criminal record

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:50 PM PST

When I was 19 I got in a car accident with marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia on me. I was charged with class B misdemeanors. Will this affect me when it comes time to get a job with a firm?

    11$/hr accounting intern position

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:31 PM PST

Asking for a friend and-she was just offered a 6 month accounting internship position at a CPA firm for tax season I suppose. They are paying her 11$ per hour which I think is super super low. I thought average is around 18$. Is she being low balled here?

Leaving a job after 8 months? Am I screwed?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 11:00 AM PST

In my career i've only had 3 jobs.

    Staff Accountant (3 yrs) - Company A $45k

    Senior Accountant (3 yrs) - Company B $60k + got my CPA

    Accounting Manager (8 mo - Current) - Company C $90k

I was offered assistant controller for $110-120k but I've only been at my current job for 8 months.

Is this going to hurt in the long run?

Was I dumb for being so blunt on a job application?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:30 PM PST

Basically I had to answer some stuff which are normal questions but I felt bad about. Nevertheless, I answered honestly. Perhaps too honestly.

About criminal background stuff I put my violent felony and explained it. Trust me, it does not look good on paper even though it isn't a conviction.

Also, about my last job, I wrote you can use it as a reference, but they definitely will tell you I got fired. Reason being, either a) I had to report my manager for sexual harassment (yes, she was female and I'm male), or b) I just shut up and not say anything.

I took option b) didn't say a word, cause I didn't want to cause drama and get her fired. I ended up "no showing" and she ended up getting fired for other reasons later anyways. So I literally wrote the truth on there.

Was I dumb for doing this? I tried to be as honest as possible although my application is probably already in their bin.

However, they were the ones who reached out to me, so I don't know. I really like the firm and hope I don't ruin my chances regardless.

    Create A Fraud Project

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:48 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I have a project for my audit class requiring me to create a hidden fraud in a business. Does anyone have any ideas?

Some rules are that it cannot be simple collusion and it can't involve a bank loan officer.

    Thanks!

    Public vs Privately held

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:47 PM PST

Might be a dumb question, but im wondering what some of the main differences are between the accounting within a privately held company and publicly held. How do financial statements differ? Monthly process? What differences might a staff accountant have in responsibility compared to a publicly held company?

I have been asked to do a 5 hour interview at a medium sized cpa firm?!?

I already did a 2.5 hour assessment & behavioral test. How does a 5 hour interview work?

Has anyone ever had an offer rescinded? (3.2 GPA student who will be getting a 2.3-2.6 this semester)

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 01:38 PM PST

How bad does this look if I just accepted an offer from a top 20-30 mid size public accounting firm? This will probably bump my GPA down to a 3.0. No where in the contract did they say the offer is contingent on my grades.

Why does audit start out with lower salaries?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 08:04 PM PST

Just curious as to why.. all the other service lines seem to make more. It evens out a little based on what I've seen but audit still seems lower. Any reasoning as to exactly why? Not value creating I'm assuming?

Which role generally pays highest in industry for a ideal work/life balance?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 12:31 PM PST

So what's generally the best paying ACCT job or even niche, excluding government, in a high COL area like Los Angeles, in which you never exceed 45 hours a week...maybe topping out at 60 during quarterlies?

    Lawsuit settlement and insurance proceeds

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:33 PM PST

What would be the entries to record expense for a legal settlement of $20,000 when insurance company has agreed to cover half of the legal costs?

Also, is this an operating expense or a loss?

Can anyone cite the ASC that applies?

Best B4 for FS - Real Estate (Audit)

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 05:00 PM PST

Also, what are the most popular exit ops? I'm in Los Angeles so regional feedback in is greatly appreciated. 😄

Launching and managing a Private Equity RE Fund is definitely something I'd like to do in the future. Do you typically need XP in IB before landing a role at an established PE-RE firm or credibility and the subsequent dollars of confidence to launch your own, or does RE consulting (at a top 5 non-B4) or assurance/consulting at a B4 suffice as a prerequisite experience?

starting salary for a bachelors (not cpa eligible) at a regional firm?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 07:12 PM PST

im graduating in the spring and i may get a full time offer from a regional tax firm ive been interning with. its a firm of ~100 people. ill have 1 year tax experience by that time and i currently get paid 20. not sure what id be worth but more than 20 and glassdoor only has a few salaries for them.

from what I understand, tax associates start at 55k-57k at top 10 firms in southeast florida. that's with a masters though since florida is one of those states with higher education requirement.

its far out but im trying to plan how tf im paying for graduate school in the fall lol.

    B4- What's a "surge hire"?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 04:57 PM PST

I've heard my program manager refer to herself and myself as a "surge hire" at a Big 4, but I'm a campus recruit. Does anybody know what this term means?

I'm in a job that seems unnecessary (very light workload during "busy" season, despite reaching out for more) so...doesn't seem like a good term for a staff member.
