Secret of Silicon Valley - How Engineers build Companies

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 02:19 AM PST

I'm a guy from Europe and I've finished recently my computer science degree. I'm very interested in startups and building products and companies. I love to write software, I love technology and my biggest goal is to work for my own startup and to develop a product which is useful for the world. What I don't understand is the business side of things. Its like black box for me. I don't know accounting, i don't know anything about finance, controlling and all this stuff. I can't understand how some computer science graduates mostly from USA can build companies with hundreds and thousands of employees. Getting funded with incredible amounts. Where do they learn the business side of things? Where do they learn how to scale the companies from 10 to 10'000 employees? What is the secret of silicon valley? Are there any books for the most important business fundamentals, funding, VC? Which topics do I have to know just to run a company? I could attend a second undergraduate degree on one of the top business schools in Europe or attend for an MBA in 1.5 year or start my company as side project. What would be your advice? Have you been a successful entrepreneur, I would love to hear your story!

    Thanks very much

If someone you know (friend, old classmate, or former co-worker) has a business plan/idea and gives you the opportunity to get involved, think twice before dismissing it!

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 02:11 PM PST

Many years ago, an old high school classmate (this was after high school as we were all in university at the time) got an idea and wanted to start a business around it. He desperately needed people to work together with, so he sent out mass unsolicited emails to his friends and some old classmates. I, like the many who received his email, found it as interesting as fake business opportunity scams we sometimes get in our inbox, so we ignored it and went on with our day. Only three of his friends responded, expressing interesting in starting the technology company. Fast forward to today: the four co-owners each took home $5 million dollars in 2018 alone. And with several new contracts to work with client companies and government agencies, that wast just the beginning.

I want to make $3,000 extra on a side hustle without doing much work...Any ideas?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 09:50 AM PST

Anyone else getting tired of these posts? Any amount of money that you're going to make through a side-hustle, startup, whatever you want to call it, is going to take time, effort, and hard work.

It definitely can get to the point where you make some solid passive income, but it's certainly not going to be a get rich quick scheme that you can spend 2 hours a week and make an extra grand every month.

LLC, LLP or LTD? - For a Branding Agency. (UK)

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 12:56 PM PST

    Hello,

My brother and I are setting up our branding agency in London, UK. Our next step is looking at registering our company either as an LLC, LLP or LTD. I have been reading up about these options online and I am not sure what will be best for us in the future.

In the future we hope to employ people and lease an office space. Our company doesn't need funding from investors and so we won't have to sell stock for capital. We sell a service to our clients, not a product.

From what I can interpret, an LLP must be started with two members (or one person and a LLC company). Which one is also more tax efficient for our situation? LLC, LLP or LTD?

Any advice is much appreciated! This choice really is a struggle.

    Many thanks,

    LondonBizz

Looking for brutally honest feedback - I've shown this idea to 10 people, 8 hated it and 2 loved it.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 11:57 AM PST

As an avid Airbnb and Uber user I've been thinking about what the next iteration of the 'sharing economy' might look like, and I've been working on an idea that can be summed up as the 'Uber Pool for Accomodation'. It's essentially a marketplace of people who are looking to save money by splitting costs on Airbnbs, hotels, short-term rentals, etc.

I've been trying to get feedback on the concept and don't know whether I should be confused or encouraged by the sentiment. 8/10 people I've talked to about the idea think it's crazy/stupid/unnecessary, while the 2 that did like it absolutely loved the idea and were immediately asking all types of 'buying questions'.

    Product image background removal issues

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 01:53 PM PST

I've been spending all afternoon trying to get the background completely removed on a piece of jewellery. I was looking on the web and come across this image https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0012/3679/5451/products/collier_3_kopie_720x.png?v=1539601584 in which the background has been completely removed but I can't seem to figure out how. I tried GIMP, Paint, Word and Photoshop. I was able to remove the greater part of the background but it's still not as perfect as the background in the picture I listed above. Anybody else have any idea or am I doomed?

Looking for feedback/validation on an idea.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 09:39 AM PST

Not sure if this is the right place, so feel free to point me in the right direction but, I was reading Re-Work last night and the sections on meetings being too long to the point that they waste time got me thinking that it could be neat if there was a video conferencing app like Zoom.us that enforced a very short timeframe. Terse Twitter pitch: One Minute Meetings. The whole concept is about organizing your thoughts and words through the use of constraints. After a minute of conferencing I'd block you out for a minute but, I'd play the meeting back in that time and let you retrospect. I've thought about using doing voice analysis so that the call could pick up on certain words that you could use to make 'video notes', like specifying sections that the group could then choose to replay. I've thought about a ton of things but, it's all loose threads at this point and I'm curious what you guys think of the core concept.

    Any/all feedback is appreciated :)

Execution > Ideas. What are some books on startup execution?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 10:15 AM PST

What helped you craft your story perfectly for the audience you target?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 12:09 PM PST

I am convinced that my story is key in establishing a base of support from nothing and building a social media following to the point where I can use it to get the interest of the businesses I will be selling sponsorship to. But I'm not exactly sure how to craft that story into a final product and how to tell that story effectively through social media.

What helped you with the story you told your audience?

Is there anything one can do as a vendor when a customer uses a fake credit card to purchase goods and ships to their house?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 11:56 AM PST

So this happens from time to time. I run an e-com site. and obviously don't expect any fraud to be looked into.

But I was wondering if there is anywhere or any authorities that would look into minor claims like that or at least file them so the person can't continuously do the same scam? These people are in fact shipping to physical locations. Sometimes quite close to where we are located so we could go visit them (if we had some time or wanted to confront the person lol).

But in any case it just seems too easy for someone to continuously pull the same scam and there should be a repository of names being reported (or maybe that has bad side effects I am not thinking about).

Beauty company designed for multipurpose: My business idea, which I desperately need feedback on

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 08:44 AM PST

Yes, I know what you're thinking- "It's already being (or been) done" but just hear me out.

Personalization of beauty products is on the rise. Some think it's a trend, but I think it's here to stay- if it's done right- with the user in the centre of everything.

Traditionally customized beauty companies are focused on ingredients, based on skin concerns. This niche market, is centred around problematic/ unique skin and how to fix it because you've tried everything else in the market and nothing works.

Opportunity identified: This model is obviously leaving other segmented groups out, including those who don't have that many skin concerns, and are just focused on maintenance and protection... but most importantly, saving time.

My business idea: A beauty company that provides stand alone products (Ex. moisturizer, sunscreen, mask, primer) and allows customers to customize features that minimize their current routine.

For example, you want a moisturizer that protects as well- you can custom make your moisturizer to have SPF in it. Alternatively, you may like separating your moisturizer from your sunscreen, but you wouldn't mind having a moisturizer-mask-primer all in one instead? You can do that too.

Soo, what do you think? Is it desirable? or am I just picking up crumbs from a saturated industry and creating a business out of it?

Where to sell my LLC business?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 02:17 PM PST

Over a year ago I started a small import/export LLC called the Newland Trading Company (www, newlandtradingco, com). I've decided I want to put more of my time into school and other ventures but I don't have the heart to shut down something I've invested so much time into making it profitable and something I can be proud of. Besides the LLC I want to sell with it the physical inventory still on hand, social media accounts such as the Twitter account with 12k followers and Instagram accounts with 4k followers. Also miscellaneous assets from the office Newland is based out of that that can only be used by Newland along with Newlands accounts on different importing sites and the contacts that go with them would be included. Its a small LLC in a single room office and I'm a little confused on what sites or places a company like this should be advertised and sold. Any help anyone can give me would be great, thanks!

Pros and cons on this leasing idea

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 10:14 AM PST

Today I thought about the idea of a leasing business, where you can lease gaming PCs. The idea I based on the fact that gaming PCs often start to bottleneck after a short time period, because software start to take up more power. Hardware is is also updated every year, if not more often. If gamers and maybe businesses could get a deal where they would get the newest equipment often, wouldn't they do so? You see this deal with cars and phones, where people who want to the newest and best, pay through subscription to get it.

What do you guys think about this idea?

I have 50 12V DC powered PCs in ITX enclosures. Help me think of a business!

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 12:00 PM PST

So, I have 50 PCs in mini ITX enclosure cases and 12V DC power supplies (can run from a car battery, etc.). They were previously used in taxi cabs to run monitors with advertising displays. The hardware is dated (80g Hdd, Intel Atom processor, 2gb ram) but I may upgrade if I can think of a good business idea for the PCs.

    Any ideas?

need to make $4,763 by tuesday next week

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 01:38 PM PST

hey guys, so due to a string of bad lifestyle decisions and a laughably bad ability to manage money in even the most basic of ways, i need to come up with $4,763 by tuesday next week or some things that are negative are going to happen.

here's some things about me that might make whatever "secret" method you rich guys have got going on here a little bit easier to let me in on:

    1. i have unrealistic expectations about the amount of time, effort, and developed processes of learning it takes to acquire things in life

    2. i have absolutely no people or technological skills, and cannot in even the slightest put myself in other people's shoes and think about how the world works in relation to them

    3. i like getting things handed to me, and subscribe to many financial conspiracies like those of the rothschilds and george soros that violate even most elementary principles of economics

    4. i am completely ignorant to the concept that any system which could generate profit effortlessly and continually which does not require a barrier of entry like risk, knowledge, or capital cannot by definition exist because if it did exist it would become immediately saturated and therefore no longer useful

anyways, how do i do it my dudes? can you guys give me the "insider info" to the money tree, or the bitcoin or whatever? i would also be interested in doing "stocks" if you could guarantee that the $13.67 worth of change in my back pocket could turn into $4,763 within 3 or 4 days. thanks all! 🤗🤗🤗

What do you call a company that has no operations but just owns NCI/minority shares of multiple companies?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2018 03:15 AM PST

I know that a Holding Company is supposed to whole a controlling interest/majority shares of its subsidiary/subsidiaries. My question is what do you call a company that has no operations except own shares (just like a holding company), but it's all non-controlling interest? So all the companies in its portfolios are 'associate companies', not 'subsidiaries'.

So it's basically a means to earn passive income without having control.

    Any idea what they're called?
