What your strongest held opinion about startups that most people disagree with you on?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:23 PM PDT

    Hi reddit/startups,

I am new to this community so I decided to get a question out there to spark some conversation. I am the founder of a small funded startup that is rebuilding micro-finance from the ground up. We unfortunately have not launched so you wont find me talking about what I personally work on(at least right now). I recently dropped out of school because I was bored as heck and wanted to do something that would be substantial and meaningful in the world. I have a lot of empirical evidence and like to think big picture so hopefully there are people here I can help.

An alternate question: What is the most commonly believed startup strategy that will be no longer used in 5-10 years?

Hit me up with questions and cant wait to here what you guys come up with.

I will answer both of these later :)

How to reduce danger of adding a cofounder?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 12:01 PM PDT

I have a startup that is gaining a considerable amount of traction (fast growing DAU and subscriptions), and have been doing all of the development myself. There are two people I know and trust that are phenomenal developers and would be interested in joining as a cofounder (I only want one cofounder), and would help me build out features faster and take on other aspects like self funding, marketing, etc.

But at the same time, what happens if they join, and either flake out or decide to kill the product? Im worried about losing control over the future of the product, and want to be sure there are some protections in place, in case they decide to flake out or quit and I am left with nothing.

Any help or advice is much appreciated!

What to do in my life?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 11:44 PM PDT

Hey guys, I'm 18 years old and I currently study at UCSD. My grades are good and everything but I feel like I'm wasting my time if the only useful thing I do is study.

I wanna do something in my life; I don't wanna just sit around and wait until I finish college. Any suggestions on what to do at this point in my life? I'm willing to work but only if it's something I'm interested in, and I don't care of it's unpaid.

I know this may sound cliche and all that stuff, but I really mean it. If you guys could go back to being 18 years old what would you guys do differently and what are things you wish you would have done. I am open to suggestions and advice.

I am also studying Economics and I don't know if i should like do a double major or take a minor or just study Economics.

How would I approach another brand about selling my product?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 06:53 AM PDT

I run an e-commerce store for a health product, however with some tweaking, I think it would make a cool product for coffee.

I also live near a coffee brand that does quite well, and have sold some limited dual-branded items before. I'd like to approach them, as I have no interest in starting another store; essentially I think their customers, plus my rebranded product could be a win for both of us.

My main questions are about how to approach this, and in this scenario, how does payment typically work? Obviously there would be negotiating, but curious as to what a fair split would be for both parties.

It would also be relatively easy to mock-up and produce on my side, as I already have the manufacturing, etc...

tl;dr: Tweaking my existing product could make an interesting new one, but I'm not interested in selling it myself. How can I partner with a local brand whose customers would be interested?

    Gather information regarding startup

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 07:00 PM PDT

I am currently still coding the MVP for my startup but I am wanting to gather information via online polls and forms that I can create. Is there a tool that anyone recommends?

I'm planning on adding a link on my social media pages and use the small amount of users I have there.

Also, what type of questions should I ask during the MVP stage to receive useful feedback? I'm thinking about getting information such as how they are getting the current task completed, how often the issue occurs, user information etc.

Any help and advice is welcomed.

    Laundry on demand startup

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 01:33 PM PDT

I'm willing to start a laundry on demand business here in my country. There's no similar service here and it's indeed a need, at least between my circle of friends (btw, I'm going to do a market research before I start building the mvp, just to be sure is not just a need between me and my friends). The problem is, I was researching about similar startups at USA and I've found a lot laundry on demand startups shutting down, obviously, it's normal for startups that doesn't work to shut down but I think there's something else happening with laundry startups, and I thought maybe here I can find some insight about it. I'm thinking that maybe could be because of the challenges that this kind of startups usually face: laundry quality, prices, etc. But I'm not sure, maybe someone here knows.

Creating a platform for commercial driver hiring... thoughts?

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 06:41 PM PDT

I have a really cool idea for a driver hiring business and would love your input on it. The business is very profitable in Boston with medical workers and from my experience working for that company, there are other huge niches that can be carved with different businesses- trucking being one. My idea is I would like to find a developer that can take a look at the app, replicate it and I would eventually market it, since I have experience in the trucking world. Ideally, I would like to build the app fast, so if we fail, we fail fast and don't drag this out. Since you made it this far, let me tell you about it.

About the platform/app: The app is an on-demand hiring service platform for drivers in the US. First, we would start off by encompassing a small area (say Denver; not too big in population, still sizable). I got the idea directly for this app because there is something that exists for on-demand health care hires. This medical hiring company started in a small area, and are now in 8 states and are generating 7 figure profits.

This medical hiring company operates only for health care workers because of the high turnover in health care industries BUT there is a much higher demand in the transportation industry. The need for drivers is an increasing demand (drivers are a constant revolving door) despite what self-driving car enthusiasts might say. I have worked in the industry and see a huge demand in an on-demand hiring company such as this one.

Our main competition would be staffing agencies. They, right now, supply most of the driver needs for companies and besides them, there is the traditional hiring that companies still do (although in my experience, staffing agencies are gaining a more prominent role). Staffing agencies, though, can not see different driver profiles, and that is a huge disadvantage to them as with this app you could. Another disadvantage that staffing agencies face is that they have to pay their drivers with W2 which is a payroll form. We would not. If we borrow the medical hiring company's method of operation, which is, create an app where we solicit then hire the on-demand drivers (in their case health care workers) as 1099 subcontractors, then we have a money-making formula.

Right now I am seeking a dev to help with the initial wire framing and building the initial MVP. I am well versed in marketing- I should add as I have had success with it in the past. It is important to mention that I will be going to school to become a full stack dev in the winter and can help with coding, although there will be a learning curve there, for sure.

What do you guys all think of all this?

Domain for the startup (Navigating TLDs and ccTLDs)

    Posted: 28 Oct 2018 06:54 AM PDT

I have a startup in its initial stage and I found a good domain that ends with .com (TLD). for link-shortening and sharing content purposes, I'd like to get the ccTLD that ends with the last two letters of the original startup name (e.g. TLD:apple.com, ccTLD:app.le).

So far through searching on the internet I've found that the country's ccTLD that I have in mind is being sold as an extension to the .com TLD (e.g. .com.uk not just .uk). My question here is, if i purchase the .com ccTLD as in .com.uk do I get also the ccTLD alone to use by itself?

Edit: follow-up question. To acquire a standalone ccTLD that isn't available for sale on the internet do I have to contact the FCC equivalent in that country? Will they be able to help with that?
