Starting a small digital marketing agency from rented apartment, just realized the lease says the unit cannot be used for business use

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 10:48 PM PDT

As the title states, I recently filed for an LLC in Oregon, and there were no problems registering. I realized that I need to get a business license from my city as well, and in there they ask if my place of business is owned or rented, and if rented, they ask for the land Lords information.

To be clear, this is an online business with absolutely no clients coming to my apartment. I assume that the lease clause is geared more towards the liability of having people coming in and out of my apartment, which will not be happening.

I was thinking of just getting an address through UPS (not po box) but then I still need to select if the address is owned or leased. The other option is to be upfront with the landlord (which is a large company (Holland properties)).

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

    questions about fullfillment centers

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 01:33 PM PDT

Hi all. So I'm outside of US and have created a US c corporation to be able to use Kickstarter instead of Indiegogo. I don't want to start a debate about this, just saying where I'm at.

Of course I'm going to discuss this anyway with a tax attorney and customs broker, but thought I'd get a general idea here first.

    Here's the issue/questions:

My corporation is in Delaware, US.

I'm outside of US and manufacturing and production is outside of US.

I want to ship products to backers worldwide.

I want the best way both for me and my backers to get their rewards delivered to them, which means avoiding unnecessary and/or higher tax, customs and similar payments.

I could ship from my country of residence worldwide but DHL, Fedex, UPS, TNT, EMS rates are way higher in my tiny asian country compared to US and shipping time is much longer. I wouldn't want the backers/clients to pay and wait more than they are used to for shipping.

One option I'm considering is shipping everything to US by sea and distributing from there worldwide. I don't have workers in US nor can I do it myself and visit Delaware each time just for that.

Recently I learned about fullfillment centers. Are they something which might be a good option for my situation? Finding one in Delaware would be ideal in my opinion to avoid double state sales taxation.

Please share your thoughts about this.

    Obtaining Start-Up Funding

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 06:36 AM PDT

    Hi!

    I am based in Sydney, Australia. I've been working on business concept and things are going very well in the planning process. The initial funding needed I would say is very low risk, compared to the norm - it being no more than 70k. I would like to read the opinions on such questions;

Crowdfunding vs Angel Investor - Which is best?

Ways of going about gaining Start-Up Funding?

    Websites/Platforms for access to Investors?

If yourself is an investor and would like to know how you can get involved please don't hesitate to contact me.

What has been your experience hiring 1099 contract help for the first time?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:41 AM PDT

    Hi all,

First time posting in this sub. I've made a living for myself as a freelance writer for the past 10+ years and essentially run a small digital marketing shop on my own at this point, with 6-7 active clients and potential income in the next few months of 70Kish annually. This operation has been 100% me since day one, and I feel as if I've gotten to somewhat of a turning point in my "career" in that I am simply busier than ever before and struggling to keep up with my ever-increasing workload. The prospect of new business is always exciting to me and something that I actively pursue, both to my detriment and pleasure—I have reached the point where I can't grow further on my own.

The option of remaining where I'm at and calling it a day is there, but what I would like to do is extend to 100K before I settle on that. Lofty, perhaps, but not far off. To do this, I know I'm going to need some help, and I'm not entirely sure what that looks like yet. My skills as a writer (and voice/tone/etc) are not really transferable to another person—it's probably important that I continue to develop all content that gets shipped out of my "agency." To that extent, however, I am not a graphic designer (though I play one in real life), a coder, a PR liaison (also play but hate being front and center) or social media expert etc. That, and answering emails / doing admin and BizDev work takes up a large portion of my time that could be devoted to developing copy/content.

These are just areas where I'm thinking I could get help from others without sacrificing quality of the end product I'm essentially selling to my clients. I really don't know where to start, here, but I'm anxious to hear how some of you have addressed the good-to-have problem of hitting a growth wall as a solo unit. Who did you decide to hire first, in what capacity and why? How did you go about doing so? What have been challenges that you've run into and solutions you've settled on? By "hire," I mean contract as a 1099, BTW.

Thanks in advance for your input and suggestions!

    Criterias to entry new markets

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 12:53 PM PDT

Hello! I'm working with a startup company and they already have some products that they sell today at their home market and some neighboring countries. However, they are looking at the options at entering new markets and new countries. I've gotten the task to minimize the country list from every country in the world to only a few countries, and I was wondering what kind of criterias should I set that are important in making the possible markets/possible countries to enter list shorter. Obviously "demand for the products" is vital, but i'm fairly new at the startup scene and i'm looking for more information regarding this, preferably from someone who has been in this position before or that knows a lot about this.

    Thanks in advance!

Thoughts around Startup forcefully making Canadian branch resign

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 01:47 PM PDT

Hey guys, bear with me - this is going to be long.

    TL;DR:
I am a tech lead at a startup that is based in the UK, but has a development team in Canada. Few days ago, my boss (CTO) informed us, the Canadian branch, that we are being asked to relocate to the UK or quit. Historically, this typically is a way for the company to force someone to quit to avoid having to pay severance or termination pay.

Purpose: I'm writing this post to get some advice and tips around this situation.

Context:The Company: The office in UK is the headquarters and now has around 30 employees after a period of massive expansion in the last 12 months when the number of employees in UK grew from 2 to 30. Meanwhile, the team in Canada grew from 1 to 2. The Canadian team has been a very important part of the tech team producing a major part of the new IP of the company and doing a significant part of the technology work. In the last 12 months, the UK side of the tech team has grown as well, but the significance of the team in Canada has not changed as we here have created a lot and have evidence to prove that (Git contributions, documentation of ideas, etc).

In the last 2 years, we have closed 2 seed rounds amounting to around $10million, the last of which ended a few weeks ago.

The Termination: My boss told us that the decision to ask the Canadian team to relocate or quit was made due to two reasons:

    • Due to cost-considerations of the Canadian employees. Apparently the cost per employee is almost 2x of that in the UK.
    • Due to communication and culture gap due to the remote nature of the Canadian team. This according to him is leading to slowness and lack of good collaborative experience.

Additionally, we were told that this decision came from the new investors who didn't see a reason to maintain the Toronto team due to the costs and location of the rest of the team in the UK. The company is a British company, so the identity of the company might also have been a factor.

From our perspective, these reasons are BS mainly because of the fact that we have contributed quite heavily and significantly to the tech development over the last two years and have been responsible for creating a significant part of the company's IP. The rest of our team in Belfast isn't strong enough technically to take the company forward with the expertise they have. For example, we are a pattern recognition company and the Canadian team is the only one with Machine Learning experience and knowledge.

The conclusion: We here in the Canadian office do not wish to move to the UK, and my boss is aware of this, so in essence this is a forced resignation. While this is shitty, I'm wondering what I can do to maximize what we get paid by the company as our employment comes to an end. In relation to this, I have the following questions/thoughts, and I'd appreciate any pointers or stories that others might have that may help in shaping our strategy since I am leading the Canada office.

    1. What rights do we have in terms of termination or severance pay? I was told by my boss that if we decide to not relocate, we will have another two months before finishing employment.
    2. What leverage do we have in terms of the IP? I know that contractually speaking, all the IP produced belongs to the company, but can we use the fact that we have been involved heavily in creating IP for the company to our benefit in terms of anything that the company should pay us for?
    3. What is the advantage for the company to force us to resign? It seems like it's an unnecessary risk for them to take instead of firing us - which is much simpler and cleaner.
    4. Some of us in the Canadian office have equity - both vested and unvested. One employee has shares that he has already exercised. What happens to those in this scenario?
    5. Anything else that can give us some leverage and buy us time?
    6. Any other tips from people's experiences?

    Consultancy Ownership Type

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 01:12 PM PDT

Hey all, I hope this belongs here. I'm a young professional looking to create a business here in the US out of helping businesses reach a niche market that I have experience in. I was wondering what ownership type would be best for me as a young individual? I want to make it easy to hire outside help (when necessary), but will be working alone primarily. The eventual goal is to contract with major tech companies in the area as they look to activate this community through their products. Any help is much appreciated!

    Starting a personal business/ideas.

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:39 AM PDT

I'm 26, been working at the same job since 2013. I feel like my life is disappearing before my eyes working at a job I hate. The only reason I stay is because I have a fiance, a house, a 2 year old and the job pays very well for having no college education.

So, I'm here today to get some ideas on a personal business. Not necessarily to leave my job, but to make extra money to make me feel better about my self and self worth. I want to feel accomplished.

I've been trying to find ideas I could do, but my only interest come from tech/video games/pop-culture. I've looked at "flipping" items (cellphones, computer parts, videogames/consoles). Those markets are so bloated that I would need a lot more capital just to get my feet in the door.

Don't know if this is the place to get an idea or welcomed.

Did anyone ever received a seed grant for a startup in Canada without having connections or being part of a minority group?

    Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:33 AM PDT

I would like to know if there's anyone out there that has received seed funding through a grant, in Canada, for a tech start-up. Does such a federal or provincial program even exists and can you get it without having connections or being a minority? I feel like seed funding for startups in Canada is basically non-existent or only happening through connections, etc. Programs like MARS in Toronto are absolute BS and have been proven completely ineffective with nothing to show for, but salary increases for management.
