New 6-20 (all lines) Claims adjuster in Florida Posted: 05 Oct 2018 02:57 AM PDT I just became a claims adjuster in South Florida this past May. I have my Associates degree in Pre-Law, my CRP paralegal certificate (4 years ago), and am working towards my AIC (liability track). I had a job as a PD subrogation adjuster with an awesome company, but unfortunately I blew it. Where would the best place be for me to start looking or get hired? I don't have a bachelor's degree, and I've only been a licensed adjuster for 5 months. I feel doomed. Crazy as it sounds, I love adjusting. I'd love to ask this question on r/insurancepros, but I think it's locked. [link] [comments] |
Can Insurance Companies Go Bankrupt? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 10:53 AM PDT Hey guys, first time poster here. Ignorant to the world of most insurance. I'm a young male. I recently switched to Root auto insurance because it cut the premiums on my new Honda Civic from $435 a month to $200. I technically got even better coverage. I won't lie though, switching to this tiny and new company from Progressive is a little nerve rattling but I have read a few good stories about them fulfilling claims. My main question concerns the longevity of this company. I called my state insurance department who did verify that they are legitimate, but they have no visible rating by AMBest. They also have reported high loss ratios which I am no economist but seems to bluntly not be a good thing. Are there state regulations on insurance companies who begin to fail or go out of business? Are they monitored to the point where this is prevented before it can happen type of thing? Would a larger insurance company absorb them? Would the state have any obligation to pay unsettled claims? I'm 24 and I live paycheck to paycheck so saving 1400 every 6 months is a lot to me. For now I think the switch is worth it regardless. Any input is appreciated! Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Oct 2018 02:00 PM PDT Ok so my adopted mom has me on her insurance still. She uses this against me and questions every time I see a doctor and uses it as a means of tracking my location (I have appointments at the hospital near my apartment) she has a history of stalking me and being emotionally and psychologically manipulative and recently I've been going in for pregnancy appointments. I begged my hospital to not bill the insurance and I'll pay whatever they want somehow. They said NYC needs to do it anyway because it's the law. Someone please help me...she CAN'T know about my baby!!!! How do I get out of it? It's blue cross blue shield [link] [comments] |
What do people do when they lose their house due to landslide? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 05:04 PM PDT I had a random thought. What happens if someone's house is in a landslide and is a total loss? Homeowners insurance policies don't usually cover those things, do they? [link] [comments] |
Is it okay if I discuss my accident with my insurance co? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 09:46 PM PDT So I got in an accident today with a stationery object in a parking lot today. I checked with my insurance company to see if my insurance covers such scenarios for my damage, and they said no, my policy only covers liabilities that I owe to others. The lady told me that someone will contact me later to verify the information... Is this normal procedure? Why do they need to contact me if I have to pay out of pocket for the repair of my car? Would my bill rate increase or anything b/c of this? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
[Florida] Reward for turning in people who try to fraud an insurance company? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:37 AM PDT So I was reading through some of papers in the in the copy of the insurance application I got and noticed this:
Do insurance companies really go this far to prevent something like insurance fraud? [link] [comments] |
Mom desperately needs dental insurance and don't know what to do? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:22 PM PDT My mom's teeth are rotting and she has already lost more than half of her teeth. She is often in constant pain in her mouth. We live in California, how do we go about getting dental insurance for her? She claims 3 dependents on her income taxes, not including me, and with my dad they make about ~30k per year. I will be grateful for any advice to getting affordable dental insurance for her to get this taken care of before it gets worse. [link] [comments] |
Pet insurance to cover possible damages to a rental apartment? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 01:36 PM PDT Background: I've lived in this apartment complex for nearly four years, with a cat. The pet deposit was paid($200) and the apartment requires renter's insurance, which I have. Today I was informed that in April when I signed a lease renewel they forgot to mention some changes to pets that were in the lease and they were catching up with tenants about it. The two relevant changes they say were an extra $10 a month for pet rent, and a requirement for pet insurance to cover possible damages to the apartment(such as carpet replacement). I'm fine about the extra $10 a month. But I'm curious about pet insurance. The policies I can get through my company only seem related to pet health, and liability in case they attack someone. I checked my renter's insurance and it doesn't cover pet damages either.
tl;dr: Apartment Complex I've lived in for four years is now asking me to get pet insurance to cover possible damages to apartment when I leave. Advice? [link] [comments] |
Personal Injury Attorney - AMA (and my pointers for filing insurance claims) Posted: 04 Oct 2018 05:42 AM PDT I see a lot of posts on here regarding car accidents, property damage, insurances, liability coverage etc. I recently just read a post and saw 100% incorrect information being giving regarding diminished value and being paid for stress resulting from an automobile accident (called "mental anguish"). I figured that it might be helpful to some people on this thread to do an AMA. By way of background I've been practicing insurance law for going on 7 years now (don't let the username fool you). I represent 100% plaintiffs (people who get hit/injured). Prior to representing plaintiffs I represented insurance companies. Prior to being an attorney I was a claims adjuster for an insurance company. To go ahead and touch on some reoccurring posts here (in addition to the same questions that I get from my clients), here is what I suggest you do after an accident regarding property damage: 1) Do not speak to anyone other than your own insurance company or, preferably, an attorney. This means DO NOT speak with the other insurer (assuming that the person who hit you had insurance). Yes, the adjuster for the other side will be nice and chatty - they want to get you to speak to them. Even though they are nice remember that they represent the person who hit you, they do not represent you and it is their job to minimize the claim that the at-fault driver's insurance company pays out. 2) File the property damage claim through your own insurance company. You will have to pay the deductible but your own insurance company has a vested interest in keeping you as a customer. The other person's insurance company couldn't care less about you and only wants to minimize and delay the claim payout. As I tell my clients, insurance companies don't make money by paying out claims. Insurance companies make tons of money each day on interest. Everyday they don't pay your claim is another day that they are making interest on their premiums. I cringe when I see the posts on here that say "other driver's insurance hasn't called me back for three months." Do yourself a favor and file through your own insurance. 3) If you are not at fault (meaning the other person caused the accident), after you file the claim through your insurance company they will go behind the scenes and seek reimbursement from the other driver's insurance company. Once that happens your insurance company should reimburse you your deductible. 4) No, your rates are not necessarily going to go up because you went through your insurance company (see number 3 above). If your rates go up its because you were involved in an accident (even if it is not your fault) - not because you filed through your insurance. Suggestions regarding injuries: 1) One thing I have learned over the years is that the vast majority of my clients' injuries were not present at the time of the accident or even the day after. It takes a few days for the adrenaline to wear down and the inflammation to flare up. Because of this, the other insurance company has a vested interest in speaking to you immediately after an accident prior to your pain setting in. Please see suggestion number 1 above. When you speak with the other side the day after the accident and you tell them that you don't have any neck pain, then a week later you get neck pain so bad that it requires surgery, they will point that recorded interview that you gave saying you don't have neck pain and you will be left fighting an uphill battle. 2) Go get checked out by a doctor immediately after any accident where your think there may be even the slightest possibility of an injury. I would suggest an urgent care facility. ER's are time consuming, expensive, and unless you are about to die they are going to discharge you with a script for anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers with instructions to see an orthopedic or neurosurgeon. Obviously if you're involved in a major accident you need to go to the ER, but if it is something less than that I like urgent cares. 3) If you have any suspicion that you are injured, get an attorney ASAP. Personal injury attorneys are mostly always contingency based. This means that they are free in the sense that you don't have to come out of pocket to pay for their services until the end of your case. I see people on here from time to time talking about settling their injury claims for ten-times less than they are actually worth because they don't know any better. Feel free to ask any other questions and I will answer them as best I can. [link] [comments] |
My shed is damaged from excessive rain (PA). Posted: 04 Oct 2018 03:28 PM PDT I have a backyard shed that is about 10 years old. It was purchased at and installed by Home Depot. It has been a really rainy summer and the ground under the shed softened. One of the 8 cinder blocks supporting it has kind of turned on its side and now the back panels have bowed and gapped. Is this a valid HO claim? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:57 AM PDT Hello! I hope this is the right place to post this question. I was treated at a hospital in Texas for a trauma situation I suffered after a fall in December of 2015. The hospital was out-of-network, but according to the insurance companies summary of benefits they will cover this as in-network. I tried visiting the hospital's billing department in person after my care to find out how much I owed but there was always an excuse as to why there was no bill: the system was down or they were dealing with the insurance company. I figured they will send a bill when they have it. They never did. In 2017 I got an EOB from my insurance provider which said the total charges from the hospital were $50k, they paid, $24k, and that I may owe $600 for copay / coinsurance. After so long I figured they would just write that amount off. Nope; almost three years to the date I get a bill for the remaining $26k. The bill I received from the hospital is not even an itemized bill, it just has lump sums. The total, what the insurance paid, and what I now owe. I don't know what I'm paying for or why I'm paying for it! I spoke to call center folks so far. As far as the hospital is concerned they don't do itemized bills. To pay, I can go on a 3 year payment plan and pay it off. As far as my insurance is concerned they already paid them and I don't have to pay what they want. What can I do in this situation? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 02:40 PM PDT My apartment was flooded and my loss of use coverage is paying for a hotel until restoration. I have a friend who has a vacant condo that I would be able to pay him to rent until I can get back in my place. Will I be able to get insurance to reimburse me for what I pay him? If so, what documents do I need to provide? Relocation company wants me to stay at a hotel which is 400+ a night which will exhaust our limit before the restoration is complete. [link] [comments] |
Renters Insurance won't cover stolen keys Posted: 04 Oct 2018 06:57 AM PDT Recently had a rental car broken into and a bag stolen from me that included my car keys. It costs me $200 to replace the volkswagen key and remote unlock fab. I talked with my State Farm renters insurance who said they won't cover "car parts" of which the key is included. The exact language is they won't cover "any engine or motor propelled vehicle or machine, including the parts, designed for movement on land." Has anyone successfully argued against this? The key was not affixed to the vehicle, was sitting inside my bag, and did not belong to the car from which it was stolen. Kind of miffed since those fabs are a pretty penny to replace! Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Trying out root insurances driving test. Posted: 04 Oct 2018 01:13 PM PDT I just started using their app to start a driving history. I've been reading that distance plays a pretty big factor in their judgment for rates? My problem is that I deliver for work, which is all over the entire state (MO) and parts of IL. Just wondering if this will be worth the wait or if I should look elsewhere. Edit: I apologize for leaving out some info. I have an e class license and only operate company insured vehicles while I am at work. I only drive my POV to and from work usually. [link] [comments] |
Accident in PA, no-fault, total loss. Car is rare, question about replacement expenses Posted: 04 Oct 2018 12:36 PM PDT So I was in an accident last week (live in PA and accident was in PA), it was the other driver's fault and that was never disputed. I received my total loss settlement offer today. I think the vehicle value as offered is fair. Here is the issue. My car is very hard to find. It is a 2014 VW GTI Wolfsburg, automatic, with 45k miles. In their evaluation they had to use manual transmission 2015's (new generation, different than my car) and adjust to try and get a comparable car. I have no issue with the value they arrived at. My issue is that in order to replace my vehicle with a suitably comparable vehicle, I will need to go at least 200 miles. Currently I have found 3 similar to mine, one is 200 miles away, one is about 240, and one is 350. Is there any way to get them to reimburse me for travel expenses, or will I be laughed out of the room if I ask? This is my primary question. I'm not looking for anything unreasonable, just a mileage based reimbursement for the round-trip + one-way for a second car (since I have to have someone drive me there to pick up the new car). The only other issue is that, despite me not having a check in my hand yet, and it possibly taking up to 2 weeks to get me the full amount (they can give me 80% of the amount due to me, but can't release the rest until getting the title from VW after paying off the car), they are requiring me to return the rental on October 15th, which I would argue is not suitable time to replace my car, since I still don't actually have the money from them that I need in order to replace it. Do I have any leg to stand on with either of these issues? My biggest concern is being reimbursed for travel. I know it sounds petty, but when I bought this car in 2014, it was a long search to find exactly what I wanted... I was hoping to drive that car into the ground. Edit: Thanks for the responses. It's frustrating but I understand the reality of the situation. [link] [comments] |
Can you be billed retroactively for prescription medication if you stop? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 12:18 PM PDT I am on Humira, a Tier 3 medication that my doctor had to write a letter of medical necessity to get. I am thinking of leaving my job and being unemployed for a while, which would mean no insurance and no humira. If this happens, would I be billed retroactively for the humira that I did take? Do I need to contact my insurance after an accident that involved only my car? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 11:30 AM PDT My car was skidding which caused it to flip over from hitting a curve, but it does not look like it has a lot of damage. Also, my passenger and I suffered no bodily injuries and a police report was taken. Is it necessary to contact my insurance considering I only have liability? [link] [comments] |
Insurance won’t pay for my daughters delivery Posted: 04 Oct 2018 11:23 AM PDT Re-posting my problem over here. So, to begin with, my wife and I conceived our daughter in November 2017. My wife was a senior in college and didn't have insurance previous to the date of conceiving. Once we knew, she got insurance from her college. I thought she had for the entire year, but she couldn't. Now, months ahead our daughter is here and we're getting all the bills rejected by her college insurance saying that she should provide these bills to her previous insurance since our daughter was conceived before she was with them. Apparently under Florida law. We're talking about more than $12,000 and we don't know what to do. She doesn't have an employee insurance and I'm completely lost in this. This college insurance paid for her obgyn visits with no problems and we don't know what to do. Are we entitled to pay everything? Is there anything we can do? Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
[CO] Car Accident - Insurance Repair or replace dispute Posted: 04 Oct 2018 11:01 AM PDT Hey folks, I got into a car accident recently. Right now, I'm going back and forth with a damage adjuster on whether to replace or repair the damaged parts of my vehicle. I love my car, and knowing any kind of damage to a car via an accident won't make it the same if it's just repaired. The damage adjuster states it makes sense to repair the dented vehicle, while I want anything dented, scratched and damaged parts replaced. Do I have any recourse on getting these items replaced, or am I stuck with the other person's insurance on just getting these items repaired? Should I keep standing my ground on what I want, and what needs to be replaced? [link] [comments] |
[Maryland] Looking for auto insurance. Posted: 04 Oct 2018 09:52 AM PDT Hello, So I was trying to register my car to Maryland (Drove it cross country from California) and it is required that I get Maryland issued auto insurance. I called 3 companies for quotes (Nationwide for example) that all said I needed 3 years of having a driver's license to qualify. Since I have less than 3 years experience, am I put in a separate category for auto insurance (like high risk)? Is it the age (I'm 25)? If it's the case that I'm "high risk", would it be worth getting "high risk" insurance for around a year or something and then go shopping after I meet the 3 year requirement? I could use some advice on what I should do since it's my first time shopping for car insurance. Thank you for your help ahead of time! Extra details if it helps: - I drive a 2005 Honda Civic coupe - Had a California driver's license for 2 years, got Maryland license recently - No accidents or traffic violations - Previous car insurance was my parent's plan with State Farm (still active) [link] [comments] |
Got hit by a shopping cart a few months back.. Posted: 04 Oct 2018 01:29 PM PDT So, I got hit by a shopping cart a few months back. NBD, call my insurance company and file a claim. They estimated (a low estimate) on an R&I on my fender and to paint match and blend at $600. Only issue is I made my comprehensive deductible at $500 instead of the $50 I have done on past cars. It's a 2018 Honda Civic si. I have since changed my comprehensive deductible down to $50 and I believe the insurance company closed the claim. I'm NOT TRYING TO COMMIT FRAUD HERE. I am only curious if I call the insurance company and ask nicely that they use my $50 deductible opposed to my $500 deductible for this repair. I mean I've been a loyal customer for the past 8 years. I've had 6 different cars insured through them and NEVER once had an accident, ticket or made a claim. I've paid them $1000's of dollars over the years and they've never had to use any of that money. Does anyone here think them helping a loyal customer is a possibility or am I just shit out of luck and have to fork out $500 for car damage that I'm in no way shape or form responsible for. Any help would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
How is loss of use determined with business vehicles? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:55 AM PDT I'm a mail carrier who was recently rear-ended while driving my personal postal vehicle. I feel the whole situation is going to be a mess. Firstly, my vehicle an import (1990 Toyota Hilux with 75k miles, not something I can easily find OEM parts for). Not necessarily a "nice" vehicle, but I wanted something decent that was 4WD and RHD, and I paid an importer $10k for it. The agent said I should expect the vehicle to be totaled. Secondly, I've lost work as a result of the accident. For whatever reason, its taken over two weeks for the insurance company to start any sort of process. In that time I have lost work hours due to not having an operable postal vehicle (though I have been able to find work when the USPS has a spare truck to lend me). I did not get a rental (as the insurance company had not determined liability, again, for over two weeks) but used an Uber maybe ten times. My wife was able to drive me for any other trip. So, how is something like this even calculated? What sort of damages should I expect? I'm only just now hearing back from the insurance company. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Oct 2018 08:10 AM PDT Hi, I'm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and I got quotes from brokers and the co-operators for car insurance. The price is pretty much the same. The difference being less than 2 Canadian dollars. I'm wondering which option is better in your opinion. I feel like there will always be inherent bias whether this is answered by someone who works as an insurance broker or someone who works for an insurance company/agency/co-operative. I looked at the review ratings and the amount of reviews for both options on google and google maps as well as facebook and the brokers have a much better rating and reviews but i'm still not sure. Thanks for your help and time [link] [comments] |
Less than 1 month gap in auto registration? Posted: 04 Oct 2018 07:52 AM PDT Hey everyone! I have a question about my car insurance and registration. Currently, my car is registered in GA and titled to my father. I just received the title and will be titling it to myself. I currently reside in North Carolina. My father's insurance renews on 10/15, and he'd like to remove my car from his coverage. I have my own auto insurance policy which will cover the car. As far as the title and registration of the vehicle... can my father drop the car from his insurance company before I title the vehicle in my name and register it? The current registration for the car in GA expires in April, 2019. I am moving to Indiana between 10/25 - 10/31. I do not want to register it in NC just to turn around in a week and go to Indiana. I figure if he drops insurance on the car, even if it's still registered to him, there's a 30 day window to fix it, right? I can use that window to get to IN and register there. Ideas? NC 21 yr old in accident + more Posted: 04 Oct 2018 06:47 AM PDT NC friend's 21 yr old son - hit and run, leaving scene of accident, flee/elude arrest in MV(F) + drugs. How much will their insurance increase? He is living with them and they just gave him a car and are paying his insurance. They have a total of 3 cars. P.S. He hasn't told his parents yet and I am thinking he is looking at jail time. Maybe not though - they bail him out of everything else. [link] [comments] |
