Made 7 figures in sales for my company and why I’m now leaving. Sales and Selling

Made 7 figures in sales for my company and why I’m now leaving.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 11:35 PM PDT

I've been with my company for almost a year now and I've just hit over 1 million in gross sales (contracts signed and done).

This wasn't necessarily hard for me but the job requires the utmost attention to detail. I'm good at it but here's the problem... my company has me salaried at about 20K a year plus commissions(.1% of gross contract value and single contract must be over 100K to pay out) that means on 1million in sales I only see $1000 in commissions. And I have no benefits, no 401K, no insurance. (No employees do)

I've done so well that they've decided to give me more responsibility, which I'm fine with as long as I'm compensated fairly. They told me I was on a 30 day trial period to be promoted, and it's been almost 60 days now. I haven't brought it up to be honest because I don't want to work here anymore. They won't be able to pay me what I'm worth and I've made a few small requests that have gone unheard.

I think it may be because I'm under 25 and never completed college that they think they can get away with paying me so little. I decided to apply at a mostly new/some used car dealership yesterday. They told me to come in for an interview today and I killed it. They want to meet with me next week to iron out details. I explained to them my current pay situation and they were dumb founded at how poorly I am being compensated.

While I don't know a lot about cars, I do know how to adapt to my environment with ease and learn what I need to know to be successful. I am excited to venture out and finally start to be paid what I'm worth and earning some real commission checks.

Thanks for reading if you made it this far. I'm happy to read any advice from current/former car salesman before I head face first into this thing. I'm aware of some of the pros/cons but I'm always happy to hear more sides of the story!

How to not sound like every other sales guy?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 09:44 AM PDT

Small office doing B2b advertising sales direct mail mostly. Ever guy in the office is a "How are you today" seller and I just can't get in that groove. It's been three weeks and while it's the slow time of year for us I feel like I'm getting no where with any of my calls and they probably think I sound like an idiot. Anyone else ever have this problem and how did you manage to handle that challenge?

What is an true Enterprise sales job like in Saas or B2B Sales?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 07:54 AM PDT

I'm talking about closing deals that are work $100K+ and what your day tends to look like. What metrics you keep? Do you make like 50 dials a day or what does it look like in detail? Curious about the difference for people that do a remote Enterprise role and one that is in-office.

Why do people think using cookie cutter messages in LinkedIn Mail is a good sales strategy?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:12 PM PDT

    Here is an example.

I called out the second guy and asked what really made him different and he instantly blocked me, lol wow.

I have inherited a Personal Assistant & want some advice to best utilise her.

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 11:52 PM PDT

    Hi Sales.

Basic outline is another sale rep in the office had a full time pa that he wasn't really doing enough work to utilise her.

The were both approached and told I will be getting half of her, and they were ok with it. Now it's a bit of a third wheel in a new relationship type situation. I want to come in and not upset, but also get her working with me and helping me grow myself.

Anyone done this before or been in this situation and how did it work out? Thanks.

Online sales practice to see how bad I am?

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 08:19 AM PDT

Hey, I never sold or closed anything in my life. I am in engineering. This is not my calling. I want to sell stuff but I probably suck too much that MAYBE it is better if I focus on engineering. English is my second language and I didn't grow up in US. I'm not a people person either. But I usually can reach my goals and be social when I need to.

I want to see if I can make it in sales or sales related positions like management. Is there a service online that I can use to practice selling and get feedback on how bad I am?

Advice for a rookie outside sales rep.

    Posted: 27 Oct 2018 06:44 AM PDT

I am a recent college graduate and a new outside sales rep for a growing technology company in the Midwest. I'm about 2 months in and also a woman. These two things combined make me feel like some executives I am trying to sell, especially older ones, don't take me seriously. What are some tips to gain respect even though I am fairly inexperienced?

Sales Engineers - what product do you wish you were or weren't selling?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 09:26 PM PDT

Looking for ideas, there are a lot of things out there to sell. Hardware, software, controllers, IoT, CRM, cranes, machine tools, even natural gas stations. What is fun and lucrative? What would you avoid?

    Questions on email marketing?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:33 PM PDT

I'm looking for ideas to write for my LinkedIn articles, and coming up dry.

I've been in lead generation/cold email for a longgg time, so I have a good bit of knowledge in the area.

Since the people I am trying to connect to on Linkedin are probably very similar to the community here, I am wondering what topics, questions, services, etc.. you might have the most questions about regarding cold email, or outbound lead generation?

Just finished training for my first OUTSIDE SALES job. Advice of any kind would be appreciated!

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 04:11 PM PDT

Hi there, I took an outside sales job for 8% (later 10%) commission for a roofing company. I'm to go door to door to generate sales and I've never done that before. I'll need a ladder to take pictures of the roofs too! In short, I need recommendations for a vehicle, software/app choices, tips, and anything else you can give me. During the season, I can expect to be wintered for 4-5 weeks at a time! This is my first sales job, and I'm hoping that I charmed my into a career.

I go into the field on Monday!

E: I'm an independent contractor. As far as technicalities go, I own my own business.

How do you all feel about online sales training/coaching courses? I see them a lot but I'm not sure if it is worth it

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 12:03 PM PDT

I'm trying to up my sales game and have seen a handful of online courses I can take to learn and sharpen skills and whatnot, the only thing is in the back of my mind I feel like they are't legit. Am I just paranoid?

Have you guys used anything like that before? How did it go? Was it expensive?

If I want to make a ton of money, should I go into enterprise software sales or high finance?

SaaS: After being let go a week or so ago, got my first offer today but not sure if I should continue to push for my top workplaces. Can someone on here give me advice or maybe a reality check?

    Posted: 26 Oct 2018 01:30 PM PDT

So long story short, I got let go from my last company after being there for only about 5 months. My LinkedIn meanwhile was going crazy with 5 recruiters reaching out to me every week and I took maybe two recruiter calls a week in the past two months. Before coming to my last company I was at another company as an Account Manager that retained customers and did upsells + cross-sells, that lasted a little over a year.

Recently I got a good offer from a rapidly growing startup right after having my on-site today, it was the final step in a pretty long process and the pay is above average for an SDR role.

I want my next job to be at a place where I can see myself for the next 2 years and I am talking to a couple of connections on LinkedIn about opportunities at some of the top companies I want to be at, mainly Salesforce and drum rolls LinkedIn.

My thoughts on one hand are that I should give this my all and swing for the fences, reach for the stars and try to go for the companies I want to take my career to deepdown even though I have not started the interview process there.

On the other hand, I only lasted 5 months in my first BDR role and got let go for one bad month so I am thinking if I am being a bit unrealistic aiming for a BDR role at my dream companies.

Can someone give me advice or maybe a reality check?
