Interesting NYT article about the CFPB and the Navient lawsuit Posted: 08 Oct 2018 05:40 PM PDT Here's the important point in this article IMO - borrowers should be able to trust their loan holders to help guide them to the best option for them. Having read the suit - I still say that from a legal standpoint it didn't hold a lot of water - however that doesn't mean that the CFPB's efforts to help make it more of an incentive to help borrowers isn't warranted. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/07/business/student-loans-navient.html?smid=fb-nytimes&smtyp=cur [link] [comments] |
How to find student loan account number Posted: 08 Oct 2018 11:29 PM PDT Hey guys, I've been looking all over, but I cannot find my student loan account number, and I need that to get a transcript sent from the IRS so I can do this goddamn FAFSA verification thing to get my Pell grant. I'm still in school so I don't have any billing statements, and I've combed my account page on studentloans.gov and on mygreatlakes. Am I just an idiot?? [link] [comments] |
If I drop a class, making me less than part-time, would my loans be deferred again next semester? Posted: 08 Oct 2018 07:12 PM PDT So I want to drop a class but that would leave me with 3 credit hours this semester, which is less than part time. If I enrolled in 6 credit hours next semester, would my loans still be deferred? Or would I have to start paying on them after the grace period even though I'm back to part-time enrollment? Rightfully worried but also rightfully confused Posted: 08 Oct 2018 06:47 PM PDT Trying to explain myself as best as I can here... Had been going to school on and off and thus was able to defer as I was attending classes until late 2016. My credit karma shows history of on time payments (though they should be considered deferments and some amounts even show that some loans are at 0 and closed). I got emails for payments (but never thought to submit hardship or proof of attendance) but I recently got a letter saying that I was in default from another company not FL and a call that I tried to respond to but when prompted for the option of loans lower than 10k, I was robotold that I wasn't eligible for programs. So I went to FedLoan, tried to sign in but it said that I had no account (I thought that I did or it must have been terminated due to inactivity). I made a new account and for my contact info...it has my mother's current address. Not my old addresses (ones where I lived and lived without her) but her current address. I had a ParentPlus loan which may be why but it's ringing my alarms because she herself had defaulted on student loans and went through the ringer to get out of it. TL;DR/DGAF: Got default letter, trying to climb out with prior attendance and hardship, called and signed in to see what's going on and find my mother's current info with my own freshly filled in contact info. Posted: 08 Oct 2018 05:35 PM PDT Question—let's say I pay into PAYE for 8 years out of college, get a public service job and pay into PSLF for 7 years (short of the 10 years needed), then change to a private sector job and pay into PAYE for 5 years—total of 20 years of payments of 10% of my income above the poverty level, same for PSLF and PAYE. Would I be able to qualify for the PAYE loan cancellation at that 20 year mark or would I need to make another 7 years of PAYE payments? [link] [comments] |

Teacher Loan Forgiveness - Elementary and then Secondary School Posted: 08 Oct 2018 05:00 PM PDT Hello All! I've been reading a bunch about Teacher Loan Forgiveness and everything seems to make sense. However, one thing I noticed is that it says that you can receive $17,500 if you are a "highly qualified full-time mathematics or science teacher who taught students at the secondary school level". Then later it says "you may receive up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness if you were a highly qualified full-time elementary [teacher]". My wife taught 5th grade for one year and then will be finishing her fourth year teaching middle school this Spring. How much would she theoretically be eligible for? Would it only be $5000 because 1/5 years was not in a secondary school? We are trying to decide if it makes more sense to file for TLF this spring or a year from then once she has completed her 5th year at a secondary school. [link] [comments] |
SF85P for Moderate Risk Position and Defaulted Loans Posted: 08 Oct 2018 12:54 PM PDT I have a tentative offer for a dream job but I have a defaulted student loan. I disclosed the loan issue on my 85P and will be paying the loan in full before the end of the month. The questions is; is this a deal breaker? [link] [comments] |
My mother took out $170,000 in parent plus loans for my sister who decided to major in art history. Posted: 08 Oct 2018 07:47 PM PDT This is my sisters 5.5th year in university, she has been in university for a while (out of state btw) and my mother continues to take parent plus loans out for her out of "love". I'm afraid my mother is royally screwing her financials over as she doesn't make that much as well (50k a year). My mother doesn't need to pay rent but I am afraid these loans are going to get to a completely out of hand once they start kicking in and my sister graduates this semester. She is graduating with a bachelors in art history (Why?!). I tried to talk my mom out of continuing taking loans for my sister but my mother says she will keep doing it and "once you have a child you will understand". Is there any thing she can do to lessen the loan amount? My mom is already suffocating with my sisters freshman year loans. [link] [comments] |
Application for Income Based Repayment rejected because loans are still in grace period? Posted: 08 Oct 2018 07:46 PM PDT I e-mailed my loan servicer and am waiting to hear back. Basically my husband is unemployed at the moment so I am wanting to apply for IBR until he starts work and I can do a graduated payment plan. Do I have to wait until my first payment is due and then apply? I am trying to stay on top of things but apparently I can't do that. Also Fedloan displays the amount I owe but there isn't a due date for my first payment, its blank. I graduated in May so my first payment should be due soon. [link] [comments] |
Has anyone used PaperBack to consolidate and get their loans forgiven? Posted: 08 Oct 2018 02:58 PM PDT I researched a little bit and it looks like you cannot get your loans completely forgiven for 10 years possibly. However this company PaperBack said I'm eligible to be forgiven very quickly, but I would have to pay $39 per month for 300 months (about 25 years). Did anyone deal with this company? It seemed legit at first but now it's looking like a scam, which I was afraid of. I gave them my payment info and signed the contract, but there is a cancellation form for at least 5 days after it's been signed. [link] [comments] |
Debt affecting your credit score? Posted: 08 Oct 2018 12:34 PM PDT Hi r/StudentLoans, I'm a personal finance reporter. I'm working on a story about how to get on a lease when you don't have a great credit score. I know student loans can impact your credit score and am wondering – have you ever had trouble getting on a lease because of your credit score? Thx! [link] [comments] |
Refinancing Student Loans without a Degree Posted: 08 Oct 2018 08:06 AM PDT I'm looking to refinance my student loans but most sites either give me a worse rate or don't let me apply because I have not completed a degree and don't plan to. I currently am an Engineer and I make $82,900 a year in Ohio. My current student loans UAS echo $9388 at 6.55% Pay $130 a month Myfedloan $30,060 at 6.75% Pay $242 a month Myfedloan $17,062 at 6.75% Pay $145 a month Myfedloan $19,126 at 7.9% Pay $172 a month Any suggestions on how to refinance and the quickest way to pay these loans back would be greatly appreciated! I've defaulted for 3 years and now I need assistance. Posted: 08 Oct 2018 07:46 AM PDT Hey all, Throwaway for obvious reasons. I graduated in 2013 and deferred my loans. Around 2015/16 my loans kicked in and I was not financially stable enough to take them on. Fast forward 3 years I have felt afraid to take the next step and now I owe 8 grand in back loans for a total of 45 k in debt. What makes matters worse is the reason I am finally making the jump is I just got engaged and planning to move in with my fiance. I know I have screwed up royally. My loans were held with navient and I talked to a representative and they have consolidated my loans into one loan and the dept of education has bought the loan. I am in the process of sending in my last two pay stubs to finalize everything. What I want to know is if this is the right move or do I have any other choices? Thank you for your time. I have shitty credit and need to take out loans Posted: 08 Oct 2018 09:40 AM PDT Basically I have shit credit and need to know if there are any other institutions that will help me take out a private loan to pay for school. I'm a sophomore Mechanical Engineering student. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2018 11:32 AM PDT I've been doing a lot of research about the Student Loan problem in America and I've been trying to understand how it's happened on a massive level for the nation and how it happens on an individual level. A little background on me: I am a nineteen year old college student living in California. I am a third-year majoring in English with ambitions to become a lawyer. I currently have $3000 in student loan debt and I plan to graduate with none. So my fascination is derived from my own experience. The Question: How is it that people graduate from college with degrees that may or may not be marketable, finding themselves in so much student loan debt and seemingly shocked by the outcome of their choices in college? People often say things like, "I was eighteen, young, and naive" which I can understand. I turned eighteen only a year ago, but what about the people who went through this ten years ago who have frequented sites like Reddit? Why not learn from their naivete and make wiser decisions? Why do people continue to make the same mistakes with their education even though there are people who came before them and did the same thing? And what about when you were 19, or 20, or 21? Why didn't the debt you were accumulating hit you then as you got older? I don't want anyone to misunderstand my intentions in writing this post. I'm not asking these questions to ridicule anyone or to add to the anxiety people already feel about their debt. This is coming from a genuine curiosity. Thank You [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Oct 2018 06:23 AM PDT Hello, I'm potentially planning to switch from IBR to REPAYE and wanted to ask if you are automatically put into a 1 month forbearance. I've made 50 or so payments towards PSLF and would hate to push it back a month for this to happen...so I'm just exploring options. I'm expecting capitalization would occur, which isn't a big deal for PSLF....I just wasn't sure if I'd be pushing back my forgiveness date a month by doing so. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
