    Investment strategy

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 11:29 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I started investing in stocks a couple of months ago and have come up with a strategy based on my research and the finance course I took at my university. Here are the steps I follow:

    1. Choose an industry that I believe has value, or choose a characteristic that I value in a company (i.e. environmentally friendly, well managed, etc.). Search for companies based on this.
    2. Perform a financial analysis of those companies stocks:
      1. Check beta value (I'm low risk, so I go for beta's below or around 1)
      2. Check the dividend yield of the company and industry it operates in
        1. Based on the companies I've searched, it seems like anything above 3% is high, 2-3% is decent and below 2% is low. Also if the companies yield is higher than industry, then that's a plus.
      3. Compare the PE ratios (trailing 12 months, TTM) and dividend yeilds for that company and the industry
        1. If the company has a PE ratio that is higher than the industry, it should also have a dividend yield that is higher to justify paying more for the stock.
        2. If I believe that the company has value and I see that its PE ratio is lower than industry, that is a plus since it means the stock is undervalued
      4. Check the payout ratio
        1. Based on it companies I've searched, it seems like above 70% is high, 50-70% is decent and below 50% is low

Also, I was taught to compare the price/cash flow, price/sales and price/book value between the company and industry, but I feel like that if I've already looked at the PE ratios than these won't tell me anything new (i.e. if the PE ratio is higher than industry, then the price/cash flow is also usually higher).

Let me know your thoughts and suggestions. Also I've been using Morningstar and Yahoo Finance to get my information. If there are any other sites you can suggest it would be appreciated :)

What are 3 signs you look for in a stock before you invest in them?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 08:02 AM PDT

Essentially I'm trying to understand what to look for in a stock/company when making a decision to invest. I want to begin making informed decisions when investing....something I know I should already be doing, but I figure it can't hurt to ask.

Study: the U.S. stock market is experiencing sector rotation.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 04:48 AM PDT

The U.S. stock market is experiencing sector rotation right now. Over the past 2 days, the Dow went up while the NASDAQ went down (different from earlier this year, when the NASDAQ led the rally).

Contrary to what conventional technical analysis says, this isn't a bearish sign for the stock market. Sector rotation is more bullish than bearish.

Looking for advice on interactive brokers

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:46 PM PDT

I finally opened an interactive brokers account today. Have been using td ameritrade but today was the last straw when their online contingent ordering system went down for over 12 hours and even the trading desk didn't have the ability to manually enter my trades.

Anyway, just looking for tips etc. I'm particularly looking forward to shorting since another td issue was lack of available shares to short.

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

    Tesla going private

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:42 PM PDT

Do you think Elon Musk is doing all these stupid stunts just so that the stock price would fall so low that he(or other private investors) can buy up the rest of the company and take it private?

    Did AMZN just peak?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 01:22 PM PDT

    Hit $1 Trillion.

Is this the end? I would not be shocked if AMZN slowly drips down to $800 billion and stabilizes at about $700 billion.

The stock has increased in value by $500 billion in 1 year. What on earth did Amazon do the past 12 months to justify this?

I think this will be just like Microsoft peaking in 1999 and taking 15+ years to get back to that high.

Are we going to see AMD keep rising, or tank with Micron?

Just as the title says. Since AMD signed a contract with micron, I'm wondering how much they're going to ride MU's wave, for better or worse.

    Should I invest in Tesla?

TPL: most under the Radar stock?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 10:56 AM PDT

What a strange stock this is.

I never hear anything about it in financial news. And it isn't a small company or a penny stock. Its market cap is $6.5 Billion. The stock is up 82% YTD and over 200% the last 2 years. Yet not a peep on the news or any wear.

    Whats the deal?

Also the volume on this stock is nuts. Only 14,000 shares sold a day. That's only about $8 million in stock sold a day for the last year. That's crazy low volume for a $6 billion company.

I did buy a tiny bit of it a few weeks ago. And even though most stocks are getting crushed the last couple weeks, my position in TPL is actually up 5%. Seems totally disconnected from the stock market.

    Anyone that owns $FIVE

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:01 AM PDT

When did you buy in, how long do you plan to hold, and what was your reason for doing so.

I just started investing since December 2017, and FIVE was one of the stocks I chose to invest in. It's definitely my biggest winner in my portfolio. To be honest, I don't remember my reasoning for why I invested in them, but it turned out to be a good move?

My investment in my Vanguard International index fund isn't doing great after 6 months of it being invested. Should I sell my shares and reinvest it into their Domestic fund, wait it out, or doing something else? It's down like 5% from the initial investment.

I'm going balls deep into TSLA, anyone else feeling the bullish tick?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 12:33 PM PDT

I posted here a while ago on how I was bullish on TSLA, someone wrote me a PM and said that if I was going to invest roughly 1/4 of my portfolio....that I should wait for an entry point of $250.... I laughed at him....thinking TSLA was on a permenant verticle run. However I headed his advice and made some short term gains along the way......However....this morning. When TSLA hit 258...at roughly 630am....I sold off some shares and transferred my savings into my brokerage.....and invested roughly 14k in TSLA.

Im going balls deep....and whatever I have left from my paychecks....I'm inv3sting in tesla.....

Meats no longer on the Menu boys....

    It's TOP RAMEN TILL TESLA!

Is $LIT ever going to grow again??

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 08:25 AM PDT

I bought at the wrong time and still am confident that by 2022-2025 Lithium will be in extremely high demand. However, is this ETF the right exposure to even catch that growth? I know all of the main holdings cover the entire process from mining to distribution but I hate letting money sit stagnant when it could be growing elsewhere. Any and all advice/ price points appreciated.

1k to invest in weed stocks.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:31 AM PDT

I am looking to invest in ACBFF, CGC, CRON, TLRY.

I am looking at market cap and price to see inflation and see if it's really worth the price. I think this market right now is high risk. But I do want to invest.

I am leaning more towards CGC or ACBFF. I like TLRY but I think there will be a correction soon.

    Facebook Considering Dividends?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2018 07:20 AM PDT

In daily conversations with fellow traders, Facebook seems to be the main topic of conversation. Dividends and buybacks seem to be a strategy that giants like Apple have benefited from. Both are not common in social media stocks, but desperate times call for desperate measures. We shall see. Long FB at these levels.
