Facebook Slides as Instagram Founders Bolt Amid Reported Tension With Zuckerberg

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 05:46 AM PDT

Facebook Inc. shares were indicated sharply lower in pre-market trading Tuesday after the social media group confirmed the departure of the co-founders of its popular Instagram app, a move that marks the second major exodus of key developers in its fast-growing messaging businesses.

Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom and chief technical officer Mike Krieger, who founded and launched the photo-sharing app eight years ago, said late Monday that they were leaving Facebook, which purchased Instagram for $1 billion in 2012, in order to "explore our curiosity and creativity again." Systrom wrote in a blog post that "building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that's what we plan to do." Multiple media reports, however, put the departure down to increasing tensions between the pair and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who has grow increasingly reliant on Instagram to drive group profits.

"Kevin and Mike are extraordinary product leaders and Instagram reflects their combined creative talents," Zuckerberg said in a statement. "I've learned a lot working with them for the past six years and have really enjoyed it. I wish them all the best and I'm looking forward to seeing what they build next."

Action Alerts Plus holding Facebook shares were marked 2.9% lower in pre-market trading Tuesday, indicating an opening bell price of $160.54 each, move that would extend the stock's year-to-date decline past 9% and value the Palo Alto, Calf.-based group at just under $470 billion. Shares of rival messaging app operator Snap Inc. (SNAP - Get Report) were marked 3.3% high in pre-market trading at $9.24 each.

Zuckerberg himself touted the value of Instagram and WhatsApp to the group's bottom line and growth prospects, saying that at least 2.5 billion people use at least one of its four messaging platforms each month and that Instagram hit a "milestone with now more than 1 billion actives".

"This is a moment to reflect on how this acquisition has been an amazing success. When Instagram joined us the team had only 16 people. And since then, Kevin and the team have built Stories, Direct, and now IGTV. This has been a story of great innovation and product execution. And it's also a story of how effective the integration has been," Zuckerberg told investors on a conference call.

"We believe Instagram has been able to use Facebook's infrastructure to grow more than twice as quickly as it would have on its own. So a big congratulations to the Instagram team and to all the teams across our company that have contributed to this success," he added.

Mobile ad revenue, which accounts for more than 90% of Facebook's overall sales, rose 50% in the second quarter (compared to last year) to $11.9 billion, "driven primarily by ads in feed on Instagram and Facebook", according to CFO David Wehner.

The exit of Systrom and Krieger is the second major executive departure for Facebook in the past six months and follows the resignation of WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum, who announced his decision to quit in April amid reports that he and co-founder Brian Acton clashed with Zuckerberg over Facebook's desire to use the personal data of WhatsApp's 1.5 million daily active users to form target ads that would increase group revenue.

What is everyone's opinion on CTL? They offer a 10% dividend and seem to be a relatively stable company. The CFO just left and the stock dropped 8% on the news. He didn't leave for any reasons related to the company so this seems like an overreaction and a good buying opportunity. What do you guys think? I was planning on picking up 100 shares and start selling covered calls on it.

Biotech and Pharma stocks with 250%+ ROI opportunities

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 05:36 PM PDT

$TRXC --- Yesterday, I posted an update on $TRXC hoping to give people on the sidelines opportunities to invest their money into promising companies -- $TRXC closed today +6.18%. This stock has been a Strong Buy since mid-2 dollars and has been one of the biggest winners already this year, but with the 3mm FDA approval coming up and the recent acquisition, I'm confident that this one will continue to run up through EOY. If they announce commercial sales, this stock will likely go parabolic.

$VSTM --- received FDA Approval of COPIKTRA™ (duvelisib) Capsules, an oral medicine for cancer patients. Verastem Oncology™ has COM (composition-of-matter) patent protection of duvelisib through 2030 before extensions. This company has $165 MILLION in cash. They announced on their call today that they will be announcing another major partner by EOY. I expect the price target of this stock to be $15+ by end of year. This company is currently under $1B market cap.

$TRVN --- popped today for +13.37%. Technical analysis initially is the main reason why I thought there was a huge trade opportunity, but after reading about the company and pipeline, I may just hold the stocks long-term. A lot of analysts have $TRVN's price target above $10. (https://finance.yahoo.com/news/analysts-bet-trevena-trvn-pain-003603980.html)

$GERN --- Sad I didn't pull the trigger on this one. Popped today for +13.55% during regular hours and +7.58% AH.

    $CRMD --- closed regular hours +3.75% and +5.38% AH.

What other biotech/pharma stocks are you all bullish on? Would love to hear your tickets and DD!

Can someone help me better-understand options, shorting, & day-trading? Maybe an ELI5?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 11:30 AM PDT

From what I understand, you can only buy a put/call option at 100x the cost of a share from a given security. If so, that would mean that even if I found a security that was as little as $10/share, I'd have to put aside a thousand dollars. I can only hope I missed something, here, because I don't have that money to spare - especially when I feel like I'd be more inclined to use that same amount of money to simply buy shares of security that has a good prospect, instead.

Similarly, I want to learn a bit about shorting, too. I know that it's basically the inverse of buying a stock, wherein you make money off the financial depreciation of a security. Is there much reason to try shorting out? I did want to experiment with it.

Finally, I wanted to learn a little about day-trading. Do I have to have a special license or job position to experiment with day-trading? I do know that it's very risky, which is why I'd plan to use a very tiny amount of money to begin with. But for the sake of curiosity in regards to finance, I want to experiment with it.

If you had a goal to receive $100 a month (or $300 per quarter) on dividends, which stock(s) would you choose?

Just as the title says which stocks would be the best to hold for a while and earn you around $100 per month of dividends? I know at@t (T) is a good one and there are some that pay 13% but might not be as good of an investment.

    S&P 500 Funds & Dividends

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 09:26 AM PDT

Does it make sense that one S&P 500 index fund would pay dividends and another would not? I have the Vanguard S&P 500 in an IRA and it pays quarterly dividends. Just recently I started a 401K at my new job, held at Prudential, and am investing in the Dryden S&P 500 index fund, and it does not pay dividends. Thanks for any insight.

    $F Sell or hold?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 06:48 AM PDT

Hey! I was gifted some Ford stock. With the current downturn, I am thinking of holding it until at least the next ex-div date and then explore selling it then. It seems as like the downturn is just fueled by the supplier fire / no clear future plan yet. They still remain highly profitable (albeit susceptible to tariff prices). Does this plan make sense or am I trying to catch a falling knife? I have no immediate need for the money so I am fine letting it sit for a while.

Why should I care about dividends?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 11:53 AM PDT

My understanding is that when dividends are paid out, the stock price decreases by that exact amount (dividend per share). If I'm a long term investor in my late 20's, I don't want money paid out to me, I want growth. Wouldn't I want to target companies that put their money back into R&D, acquisitions, or stock buybacks? Is there any reason I would care about dividends?

There have been a lot of dividend articles catching my eye lately, I just want to make sure I'm not missing something.

(Unprompted Hypothetical) Effects on Ford credit if Ford were taken private?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 01:14 PM PDT

With Ford sitting on a cash pile of about $25B ($13B net including debt), producing tons of cash flow and earnings, little to no intangibles/goodwill, it seems to me that Ford could be a viable target to take private within a couple years assuming no significant appreciation in share price. However, regardless of if they go private or go to $0 tomorrow, my question for you guys is if anyone knows how going private would affect their Ford Credit debt offerings. I've been having some really good discussions with people here about Ford over the past couple weeks so I figured someone here might know.

They have something like $120B borrowed in extremely liquid, 2% yield securities. Would Ford be required to make the same financial statement disclosures (income, balance, cash flow) that they do as a publicly traded company to continue to borrow for Ford Credit? Could going private severely impair Ford Credit's ability to raise funds? What would happen?

    What’s your plan with AMD?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 06:11 AM PDT

I sold some other positions and bought AMD at $17.50. I'm obviously perfectly happy with how that worked out, but now I'm wondering what my exit strategy is.

I've got about 25% of my portfolio in AMD so I need to rebalance at some point. I'm torn between somewhat negative sentiments for the sector moving forward and the upside AMD has in the next year or two.

I'll hold some AMD long. So would you sell half of your position now and take profits to rebalance or ride the wave longer and see where it goes?

    Advice on stock pitch

    Posted: 25 Sep 2018 12:00 PM PDT

I get the opportunity to pitch an equity (no option contracts) at the end of the academic semester Dec 10-15th, or year, June 4th, in front of industry people looking to invest, and look for hires/interns. My question is what stock would you go long on, and why?

    Im thinking $V or $MSFT.

Details: Must be held for about a year in the fund, no options, foreign markets are allowed, and AUM is 1.8m (not sure if that matters)

-V is entering into new markets worldwide and consumer spending is still rising, including the use of credit cards over cash. I think we've have a few more years of a decent bull economy too before a correction etc.

-MSFT is revealing new products and advancements consistently and i believe it to take even more dominance in the market shares for the sector.

Anyways, I'm still in the early stages on this and would greatly appreciate anyones feedback/advice. Thanks
