Reputable companies for student loan consolidation/refinancing?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 04:12 PM PDT

I am hoping to hear from those of you who have consolidated/refinanced their student loans.

With whom did you work, and would you say it was a positive experience? Thanks lovebugs!

P.S. - admittedly I don't know how to search reddit on mobile for particular threads, so if this exists elsewhere please feel free to point me towards it and call me a peepeepoopoobutthead.

This message came up on Fedloan Servicing's website:

Just a reminder! If you started an Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) application or annual Recertification though StudentLoans.gov during the IRS Data Retrieval Tool maintenance, don't forget to complete your application.

    Options for student loans?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 06:53 PM PDT

    Hey,

I have about 6k that I need to cover in order to stay in school. I'm currently at school on campus right now and I feel stuck.

For more info, I've used all federal loans I could have and I've been trying to pull out loans but keep getting rejected even with a co-signer. Keep in mind that my family struggles financially as well. I am a junior this year. The only reason why I'm stuck now is because of the large increase of students, which is why I couldn't be put in a normal dorm on campus. Most students took the cheap dorms quickly so I got stuck with an apartment. Keep in mind that these apartments don't require monthly payments, so I am not paying rent or anything, it's simply just a glorified dorm room where you have your own room in a building with others. But because of this apartment, my cost of staying went up.

My adviser is pushing me to do a payment plan, however, even if I were to get a job on campus, they can only work students about 30 hours a week. If i were to somehow secure a job here, I would still be about $200 short of payment since they'll want me to pay about $800 a month for 4 months, and that is just for this fall semester only. Also keep in mind that my parents cannot help me. When I'm out here, I am literally on my own. I have until the 14th to make something happen, so a loan seems to be the only way, but I keep getting rejected no matter where I turn to.

This fall semester only only about a little over 3k. If I can cover just semester I should be fine since I plan on moving into a normal dorm on campus by next semester which won't cost as much. I just need to cover this semester some how. Perhaps taking a semester off would've been start, but I really want to finished what I've started so I came out here on faith.

Anyway, if anyone has a any recommendations on what i should do, please let me know.

Pay by group or by account? (Nelnet)

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 12:51 PM PDT

Recently my account on Nelnet has changed how my payment is allocated between my 3 loans. I pay over the suggested payment each month and now it says that my payment is applied to the loan with the highest interest rate first. I am a little confused.

Does this mean that my other 2 accounts aren't being paid towards? (and therefore racking up interest?)

Is this the best method to pay it off?

    Cold call forgiveness?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 03:12 PM PDT

I get the occasional cold call from a nearby number saying I qualify For student loan forgiveness. From an inquiry I made. But no such Inquiry exists. This is a scam correct?

Am i still under grace period?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 01:47 PM PDT

I just got an email from Nelnet who manages my student loan and they're saying it's almost time to start paying on my loan. Im taking classes still so how can it be due soon? I looked online and it says payment due November 8th. The spring semester ended in May so is it just not realizing that I'm already in classes and everything? Could this be a delay on their end since I had a few issues getting signed up for classes at the start of the semester? I'm in at least 6 credits worth of classes so I should still be able to defer my loan.

Refinancing during the grace period- other debts too

    Posted: 06 Sep 2018 04:22 AM PDT

So I have $240k in school loan debt (I'm a newly graduated pharmacist, so I'll be making ~110k). I have $8k left on my 2013 Honda Civic and about $8k left in credit card debt. With my loans (Nelnet and Sallie Mae), the first payment isn't due until January, which is weird since I always thought the grace period was 6 months.

In my situation, I'm trying to pay off my car before I need to start making loan payments. I should have it paid off in November. I know SoFi honors the grace period but only up to a 6 month time period. So, shouldn't I wait until my car is paid off to refinance, so I don't immediately owe 2400/month while making $2-4k payments per month on my car?

    Am I screwed?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2018 09:30 PM PDT

Hello everyone, looking for some advice on here. So 2 years ago I accepted a loan through financial aid because my I didn't know what I was doing and my dad just told me to take care of it and accept everything.

So I accept this 6k loan and then when school starts he changes his mind and decides to pay the tuition out of pocket.

When school started I received a check in the mail for 6k which I'm 99% sure was this loan. I didn't need it anymore at the time so I took it back to my universities student accounts office and told them that I didn't need it anymore. I thought that was the end of that but since then interest has kept building on this loan and I'm being expected to pay it once I graduated even though I never used it?

I've already been to the student accounts office and they just keep sending me back and forth between there and the financial aid office. I tried to fix it last year but got so frustrated and overwhelmed with school that I just left it alone.

A year later and I still have this problem. When I last went to student accounts 2 weeks ago and explained to them what was going on they saw that I returned the check and told me that what probably happened was that the financial aid office didn't report it to the loan provider.

So I went to financial aid and they told me that I needed to bring the physical check to them (obviously student accounts didn't have it since it was 2 years ago). So I went back to student accounts and talked to the manager there who told me that I need to talk to a loan counselor in financial aid.

The next week I went and told them this but they were very rude and not helpful at all, I didn't even get to talk to a loan counselor or supervisor. All they told me was that it was too late to cancel the loan and that I would have to repay it. That is the last thing that I want to do because I never used this money in the first place.

I already contacted the loan provider and was told that I needed to take it up with the school, but as you've read they've been absolutely no help. I don't expect this post to solve the problem for me but any advice on this would be greatly appreciated (and I'm going to the financial aid office again to talk to a loan counselor/supervisor).

If you read the whole thing thank you and sorry for the long post, this is just really stressing me out and I don't know what to do anymore. :/
