Got in a accident while driving my Lyft passengers, what's going to happen? I'm broke

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 11:57 AM PDT

    > I have GEICO and was driving my lyft passengers

    > hit a vehicle and got issued a citation

    > GEICO tells me I'm not covered while ridesharing.

    > I call lyft and send them photos of my accident

    > now I wait for Lyft's insurance claim adjuster

I am at fault, how can I avoid being responsible for damages?

The person I hit has Amica.

    CPCU v. AU

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 04:47 PM PDT

Hello everyone I have some questions for those who have achieved either or both of these designations. My questions are below:

    1. How did these designations help advance your career?

    2. Which one did you see provide the most benefit?

    3. Currently, I am a college student entering my 4th year at a top RMIN university, but I have not had the chance to complete an internship or have relevant work experience, so which of these would be best to pursue now?

    4. Which, if any, of these test are the equivalent of each other so if I wanted to take an AU and CPCU what test best coincide with each other?

Thanks to those who take the time to read and answer these questions!

ISO Professional Liability Insurance, can't get a response

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 10:21 PM PDT

So, I am currently living outside the US, non-US citizen, and working as a self employed contractor in the IT/Banking business, and will emigrate in the near future to the US (Ohio).

My current customer would like to extend my contract with them so I'll be working remotely for them after I emigrate. I have formed an LLC for this purpose, but will also need Professional Liability Insurance. I am used to be able find quotes online for insurance in my country and apply instantly. However, all I find on the US side is contact forms to request a quote/call. Even filling out these contact forms, I fail to get a meaningful response. Calling a local insurance agent in the region I'll be living in and working from results in a promise to email me back, but no follow up.

Am I doing something wrong or asking for the wrong things, or are they just not interested in my business?

TLDR: Searching for Professional Liability Insurance (sometimes called Errors & Omission?) for a newly formed LLC (no EIN yet, if that matters, I won't get my SSN till I immigrate) that meets the following two conditions: USD 1.5M coverage per incident, with USD 3M max. per year coverage.

    Any pointers?

Admitted to hospital and found out I'm enrolled in MediCal in addition to having an exchange plan. MediCal told me I broke the law. Please help me resolve this.

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 09:45 PM PDT

Hi Reddit. I was admitted to hospital through the emergency room last week. This week I am still inpatient but well enough to have called the hospital billing department. They told me I have MediCal listed as a secondary insurance.

I had no idea I am enrolled in MediCal as I pay privately for a plan through Covered California. I called MediCal (Care LA) and they informed me that it is illegal to be enrolled in MediCal and also have a private insurance plan.

I believe my husband probably enrolled me when he enrolled himself last year and just never mentioned it. At the moment I am not able to speak with him about this issue to confirm and I need to solve this problem fast, but I called around a lot this morning and frankly I have no idea what to do to resolve this besides disenroll from MediCal, which I will be doing.

Any information is helpful. Is this illegal? What law was broken? If I didn't use my MediCal benefits, can I just disenroll and not face any penalty? If I am facing a penalty what would it be? Where can I get more information about this issue in general?

This has been such a stressful week and having this problem heaped on has only made it exponentially worse. Thank you so much to anyone who replies with any info that can point me in the direction of getting this issue resolved.

My current insurance company won't even give me a quote on my new home

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 09:37 PM PDT

I currently have my homeowners and auto insurance through Esurance, and recently purchased a new home (closing on the new home at the end of the month, and my current home is closing 2 weeks later). I called Esurance this afternoon to get a quote on the new home, and after going through all the standard questions the agent told me couldn't insure the new home - couldn't really tell me why (made it sound like it was too expensive on their end, but pretty vague on the details).

Is this normal? My current home is in the same zip code, and pretty similar to the new home (single family home, attached garage, but about 800 square feet bigger with an extra bathroom compared to the current home). After the denial I called a few other places (Allstate, State Farm, Farmers, Nationwide, Geico, Progressive, and Liberty Mutual), and while not all the quotes were great, they were still quotes - no one told me they couldn't insure the new house. I've had Esurance continually for home and auto for the past 4-5 years, and would prefer not to change.

Do you think it's worth calling back to see if there was a mistake, or to try to talk to somebody higher up? Or is this something that is relatively normal in the insurance industry?

If it matter I'm in Illinois.

    Seeking remuneration from insurance company

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 08:30 PM PDT

I signed up for the company insurance back last November. I received both the life policy card as well as a pharmacy card from the company. Also recently I received an updated card with member ID. The one I received in January said active as of 01/2018. I've had two visits to the doctor and also an attempted one earlier this year. Despite the location being listed as covered under the plan they were unable to locate my insurance. I contacted the HR department here at work and allegedly it was rectified(it wasn't). Anyway I went twice in June and still wasn't covered. I've yet to contact HR again but my insurance said my job had to call the eligibility department. I had to pay out of pocket. My question here is can I seek reimbursement for all of these funds I've paid out of my check every month? It's been $2765.06 all the while I've not been covered a single day of it.

Why do people pick an insurance agent?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 12:38 PM PDT

For their auto (and a bit for their home) a person can:

    1. buy direct.
    2. buy from an exclusive agent (State Farm)
    3. buy from an insurance agent

Why do people do what they do? Genuinely wondering the best way to go next.

I have to add County of Sacramento as additional insured party

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 06:50 PM PDT

I am doing business on County property, and need to add the County of Sacramento to my insurance policy. I have contacted my insurance, but they will not get back to me until tomorrow. I am curious to hear opinions. Will this be at a higher rate then typical additional insured, because it is a large government entity?, or will it just be at typical rates?

    Uninsured Motorist Protection

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 05:50 PM PDT

My question: I have uninsured motorist protection. If I were to buy a motorcycle, get motorcycle insurance, would I need to get uninsured motorist protection with that policy or would my existing policy cover me when on my motorcycle?

My scenario: Combining the fact that my car has a low value now that it's a few years old and now that I have a decent amount between savings and investment, I think I'm going to stop having comprehensive coverage and just invest what I would have spent every month on that coverage. (With the deductible it just doesn't make sense to me.) I am however going back and forth on whether or not to keep collision coverage because wet roads and blow outs do happen. I'm going to have Bodily Injury Liability, Property Damage Liability, and Uninsured Motorist Protection.

Unable to get off my parent's shitty insurance

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 01:50 PM PDT

I am 21 and have been married almost 2 years and not lived with my parents for the past 3. My household/family was very toxic and traumatic on me growing up so I have rightly chosen to cut off all contact with them and haven't spoken to them in over a year now. I have so much PTSD from my childhood that in no way could I consider reaching out to them, it is not an option for me. Well recently I went to the dentist (something my parents avoided since their insurance never covered it) and I have $3,500 worth of dental work to be done. I thought I lucked out when I was approved for a form of medicaid that would cover everything I needed done but in order to enroll in a dental plan I need to be off of the insurance my mom gets through her employer. I called the insurance agency and they told me my mom/her employer has to unenroll me during their once a year enrollment period or I need a "qualifying exemption" which does not include being married or getting government insurance. And even if I do get insurance through a future job I will still need to go through my parents/their employers first to get taken off. I know it's probably legal but it just doesn't seem right that I can't control my own insurance for the next who knows how long and it's so frustrating because I just don't have $3,500 I'm a full time college student and work part-time but barely make that amount after an entire semester. I really don't know what to do and I need to have this work done ASAP. Is there really no way for me to get off of my parents insurance without them initiating it? Is it possible I could go directly through my mom's HR department to get it done?

    Hit and run

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 01:34 PM PDT

I was parked and someone hit my car. The problem is that it is a lease and I have to fix it. Will this affect my insurance rates or should I fix it myself out of pocket? I have a 1,000 dollar deductible so I'm pretty sure I can get it fixed for under 1,000 but I am afraid that the leasing company will notice the new bumper upon inspection and have issue with it being an unreported repair?

What can I do to avoid this situation in the future?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 08:35 AM PDT

So I've been seeing a therapist I found through my insurance's website for about two months now.

They've just realized (I think they're in between office staff and everything's moving very slowly) that I actually never had coverage with the doctor I've been seeing and thus owe for the weekly visits I've had so far fully. Thankfully they seem open to haggling the bill.

Does anyone have any tips for what I should do in the future (beyond getting confirmation from both doctor and my insurance, which I did here (they were just both wrong)) to prevent this from happening next time?

It's frustrating not only to owe this money suddenly but also to have to find a new provider right when I've started to get comfortable.

    Thanks for your help!

What do you call the people who generate ACORD forms?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 10:21 AM PDT

My title looks like I'll have a punchline, but I was wondering what their job titles are so I can research how to become one.

Can anyone also tell me if they're trained to understand insurance policies? I feel like every time I've ever interacted with one to request updated COIs for a tenant doing business in my location, they don't seem to know what they're doing. They even ask me to help them with language to put in the COI or questions I feel like they should know more than me.

    Car insurance

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 04:08 PM PDT

    A little background:

I live in New York and am 26 and have had my license since I was 17. I am under my father's plan under Allstate car insurance. Two years ago I got into an accident and needed physical therapy for a few months.

I got married recently and have a year old baby and me and my husband decided to lease a car( like yesterday ). We have been looking into car insurance and apparently because of my accident it would cost something like 500 bucks a month, which sounds insane because my father has three cars and three people under his policy for 450 a month. MY husband is also looking into Geico and e-surance. This amount of money sounds absurd... just because of one accident.

    Anyone have any suggestions??

    Please and thank you

Who needs to be listed on car insurance policy?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 07:47 AM PDT

I currently live with my in laws while my wife and I look for a new house. Do I need to list them on my policy? They have their own insurance on their own vehicles. I have been staying here for about 8 months and in that time mother in law has driven my car once while her's was in the shop for maintenance. On the other hand, I have driven her car multiple times to bring stuff to my storage unit because her car has more room. Do I need to be listed on her policy? Same question with both my sister in laws with their policies. I have never driven their cars.

Water Damage Insurance Claim - How to Navigate?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 03:01 PM PDT

Came home from 10-day vacation, finished basement has visible water at bottom of steps. Stainless steel braided hose into hot water tank had multiple leaks, which poured continuously for multiple days.

Insurance (State Farm) notified immediately, and MasterService sent out the next morning to mitigate. Insurance Adjuster came out the following morning as well, and submitted his estimate within 2 days (before MasterService even had full scope of damages).

MasterService still working on the house. Have removed all carpeting downstairs, and are making 2-4FT flood cuts to all drywall. Multiple pieces of ceiling drywall damaged as well. Downstairs bathroom damaged. A/C blower was not working when we first turned it on (compressor runs outside, but no air out of vents) but we have not tried again - as MasterService told us not to spread any contaminants to the main level.

I've contacted a few contractors about putting in bids which has been a pain in itself. Some have never dealt with insurance claims before, some want me to send them my Insurance estimate (is this a good idea?), etc. Insurance won't put us up in a hotel, even though the house stinks, we can't use washer/dryer, and is ~88 degrees inside (because no AC).

Any thoughts / tips on how to proceed?

    • Should I be giving any insurance info / estimates to contractors, or wait until they provide me a bid first? Some contractors are asking for this info and/or my claim #.
    • Is State Farms estimate always going to be a lowball / first try? There are things they missed, and some of the costs are just not realistic ($5.59 for one coat of paint on the bathtub?). The water wicked up the basement wall to behind our kitchen sink upstairs - and their estimate to replace the insulation/drywall under the sink was only $432. A family friend who is an adjuster in a different state ran the same info through the same software (xactimate) and came up with $3400.
    • What about items/issues that were not included in the Insurance Adjuster's estimate? We have a closet door upstairs that won't fully open, because the wood floor under it has raised. Other things have popped up including water marks on our ceilings (upstairs), warped trim molding that wasn't like that before, etc.
    • Should my local agent be helping at all with this process? I contacted them and they basically told me to go kick rocks, talk to the claims agent.
    • How do I know everything is being covered, and will not cause future issues? MasterService just told my wife that they are not cutting out any drywall which has dried, even if it shows signs of water damage.
    • How hard should I be "fighting" their numbers? Or should I just find the contractor I want to go with, and let them duke it out?
    • I was told to get 2-3 quotes from contractors, just to use as data when going back to State Farm. Do I need this? Or should I just find the contractor I want to go with, and have them do all of the negotiating?

Sorry for all of the questions. This is our first home (~3 years) and we've never really hired any contractors before (besides painters) and never dealt with insurance claims before. It is difficult to know what we are entitled to / paying for or how to manage the process, when we cannot even get anyone to return our calls.

Question About Deductible, Check, and Repair Cost

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 01:27 PM PDT

My car was at fault in an accident. It was appraised for $2,000 worth of damages. My deductible is $500. I just received the check for $1,500 and it is written out to me.

If the repair shop can fix it for $1,500, do I not have to pay the deductible? I'm just confused as to when and to who this deductible is paid? It looks like it was just subtracted from the appraisal... but do I need to prove I spent $500?

Also, do I need to show the appraisal to the mechanic? I have a feeling if I show them it's worth $2,000 the are going to charge the full amount to get the profit themselves.

I plan on getting the car repaired but was curious... Do I have free reign with the check? Can I just cash it and not fix my car?

What can I do besides wait 30 days to drive again?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 08:36 AM PDT

So in 2017 I set up my policy with Geico and I set it up with auto-pay, paying for 3 months at a time. My auto-pay didn't go through twice and I had to call my payment in. So in April Geico sent me a letter that said "hey, your insurance is gonna expire, call us." So I called 2 days before the date listed on the paper said I had to and we set up auto-pay (again) to be renewed every 3 months and that's how it's been going ever since.

Jump to yesterday, where I was pulled over and told "your registration was suspended for lack of insurance." I showed him my policy number and proof of insurance and he let me go, telling me to call the DMV today. When I called they said there was a lapse of insurance from April 25th-May 9th. Which there shouldn't have been because I called 2 days before Geico said they would report it.

Now Penndot is telling me I have to fill out a form saying the vehicle wasn't operated during April 25-Ma 9, but it was operated during those times because I didn't even know about this "lapse of insurance." Geico says there was a lapse, but when I called in about the letter I received back in April, they said I was fine.

Now Penndot is saying that I have to fill out this form and it should be processed in 30 days.

What can I do? Geico and Penndot seem unwilling to help me and this is awful because how am I supposed to get to work in those 30 days?

Got side swiped from behind, big scratches on car, will my insurance go up?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2018 09:01 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

    Not sure how to proceed.

I was just standing behind a car, the lane was blocked due to construction. The driver behind me decided to go around me and in the process, side swiped my car. I have big scratches. Nothing absolutely terrible, but it's very noticeable damage.

Took pictures, exchanged insurance information, called the police. Waited 45 minutes (Brooklyn, NYC) and police did not come. I couldn't wait any longer so I left.

Not sure what I should do now. I would like to be compensated to fix the car. Do I call l her insurance and file a claim? should I call my insurance? Will my rates go up? (I only have one other accident on this car in 2013 in California).

    Thank you!
