How learning VBA helped me make 30k more a year.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:45 PM PDT

So I am an industry staff accountant and my job requires me to do really complicated and detailed spreadsheets that can take hours to build. I started to doodle around with macros to make cut and copy commands or something to save time.

I ended up realizing that you can basically program excel to do whatever you want and dove into learning VBA to write better macros as you cannot record every command and you have to write the code in a way where nothing is tagged by the actual worksheet name so the code is universal.

So we buy assets that costs 50k-1mil+ and then sell them to investors. We manage the asset and charge the investors a premium. I figured out a way to design a spreadsheet that with 5 minutes of just entering peoples names and a few values, like the asset costs, it would do all of the backend work, generate importable journal entries, and even was generating a live P/L of that individual asset and all of the assets as a whole. It even would calculate commission for our salesman that had variable cost changes and could even account for outside investors (like we own 50% of that asset and our investors own part of our 50%) and would adjust itself accordingly.

I starting reaching out to businesses around me and making stuff like this for them. I've been selling these spreadsheets for 2500+ for each book. It does take about a month to make them and I spend a few days at their business on a weekend or something to make sure the process is right.

For real, if you learn that code it really gives you an edge up in the work place. There are a lot of great guides online. But don't like just google learn VBA. Go into excel and start thinking about what you want to accomplish. Eventually you'll hit a snag and have to do research on the problem. Because you can record commands you can see the language write itself. It helps with the syntax and all that stuff. I would say it takes a solid month of messing around on it a few times a week to really get the hang of it.

My CFO is always saying that these spreadsheets made his job a lot easier. All the spreadsheets now look universal and organized too. And best of all, you won't have to ever do a shit ton of work in excel anymore because you can just write tons of crazy spreadsheets!

I am sure there are some excel God's on here and I would rate myself like a 8/10 in excel, but if you're in school still or haven't gotten into macros yet, you should. And not just the basic copy this over to that like you can do some cool stuff with automating database analysis or generating massive journal entries to be imported into your accounting software

    Compensation Thread?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:17 PM PDT

I saw the PwC compensation thread but was wondering if anybody has gotten one started for all firms? I would be interested to see how I'm stacking up against other firms of my size...

[US] Has anyone ever landed a job applying through LinkedIn when transferring from accounting to finance?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:05 PM PDT

    Hi All,

Just wanted to see if anyone ever got a job applying through LinkedIn when transferring from accounting to finance? Is there anything else I should do in addition to applying on LinkedIn? Like maybe sending a follow up email.

I'm currently doing M&A Tax in the bay area (Senior) and want to make the transition to Finance. I think I have a lot of the skills from M&A Tax (modeling, forecasting, etc.), but it's hard to show it unless recruiters actually look at my job descriptions.

I heard it's easy to get contacted by recruiters on LinkedIn for jobs in your current field (I do get contacted for other M&A Tax jobs). However the opposite - applying to jobs is much more difficult to get a answer from recruiters.

    Thanks,

Any of you made a switch of a job within your firm? i.e. switched from Audit to tax or consulting etc.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:23 PM PDT

Question is pretty much in the title. Was wondering if any of you approached your HR and asked for a job change. If you were successful, how did you go about it and were there any set backs?(decrease in salary/demotion?) Just unsure of my future right now and just wanna know my options. If it matters i'm an associate I at a mid tier firm.

    Life as an accountant

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:28 PM PDT

I'm studying accounting and finance in Canada right now and just heading into my second year of university. I hated my financial accounting course and found managerial ok. I just want to hear what other people in the industry think about their careers, and how similar these courses are to what you do everyday.

How to Network in a New City?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:02 PM PDT

    Hi r/accounting!

I graduated with my MSA in May. I passed all the CPA exams by January. I joined BAP, had a great GPA, went to Meet the Firms, found an internship at a place that I loved.

Then my husband got a much happier and more lucrative job offer in another city.

Three months of a part-time tax internship isn't exactly opening doors when submitting my resume for staff positions. Probably doesn't help that I went from a city with the Big 4 to a town with two national firms. I know I need to get out there and rub elbows, but I don't know how that works outside of college. I don't have a problem being warm with people, but I suck at the cold open.

    Any advice? Thanks in advance.

[USA] CPA exam- Feeling super lost and discouraged by BEC

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:51 AM PDT

I decided to take BEC last because I heard it was the "easiest". People even claim to have studied for this test in 2-3weeks? There is so much material, so many formulas, and most of them don't even relate to each other. It's super all over the place!

I'm not sure if I'm feeling this way because Becker is just making the multiple choice questions impossible, but it seems like almost every problem involves the use of numerous calculations, where if you get one part one obviously the whole answer is wrong. Is the real test like this? There are so many little details I honestly do not understand how people are passing it with such little preparation...

I already passed FAR and AUD and almost certain I passed REG when I took it at the beginning of the window. FAR was close to difficulty but I'm finding BEC so much more difficult I feel like I'm going crazy!

    International Tax?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:47 PM PDT

I am a current college student interested in international tax. Will a law degree be required if I want to pursue international tax as a career? How about a MST? If you work in international tax, what drew you in to the specific field? Can you describe your work experience?

Question about Transferring roles in a B4 firm.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:42 PM PDT

Hey y'all this was asked in r/Big4 but would still like advice from this community.

Would having an A/P or A/R role with one of the big 4 in help to get recruited in the fall during recruitment.

I'm a student in Canada who's graduating later and in Dec. I've been recruiting with some other accounting firms (office visits, etc.) this summer including 1 of the big 4. I was called by a temp agency recruiter about this contract AP/AR role. I'm wondering if i get it and perform well in these role, is it likely that I can network or leverage any connects there to get a staff accountant role for next September? Or would they not care and I would just be pigeonholing myself?

    Shout out to Maryland board

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:26 PM PDT

Just wanted to give props to the MD board. I took exams as a New York candidate and moved to the DMV area. New York was unable to provide me a straight answer in terms of what I needed to become licensed. Wanted to transfer my scores to DC and was told over the phone I would have to RETAKE THE CPA EXAM, called the MD board and 2 weeks later I'm licensed.

An absolutely straightforward process with super helpful people, if anyone is dealing with a nightmare of a board and just wants those damn letters I recommend them.

    To all management accountants

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:30 PM PDT

I'm currently writing an essay retarding non-financial indicators for a mock airline looking at expanding into a new market. I'm coming to the end of this essay and one of the last questions is "state the process you would employ to develop a suitable balanced scorecard for the airline?" What do they mean exactly by "process"? I assume they might mean one of the four perspective; Financial, Customer, Internal processes and learning and Growth. But I'm not 100 percent sure. Would like for someone to shed some light on this issue. Thanks in advance

Is buying a Mac a terrible idea?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:52 PM PDT

I just started my own firm and will be completely paperless. My firm will only have a handful of clients for which I will be using Xero, Proconnect Online, and Google Drive to start and I want to buy an iPad for remote use. My fear is that Excel is going to be a mess between the iPad and my home desktop computer, which is a PC. Anyone have experience using iPads remotely?
