Posted: 05 Jul 2018 04:35 PM PDT A long story short, I'm a 23-year-old who quit a 9-5 to start my own air duct cleaning and local services business in California. Recently, my sister let me live in her apartment since I considered living in my car, as I'm tight on money. I used my sister's address as my business address for directory listings/advertising services companies like SuperPages or Yelp. This morning I received my very first call from an individual for my services, and little did I know that this individual was a city clerk after searching them(same city as my sister's apartment). I booked this job for Saturday. The City clerk's office also had called me prior to the city official's call, but I missed that call. I am worried that using my sister's address for SEO has raised attention to my business since I am living there under the table and have no business license in that city. The city's business website mentions one may be exempt to getting a business license if one does not have a fixed location in operating their business in that city; however, listing my business address in these listing agencies implies my sister's address is a fixed location for operating my business. I would greatly appreciate anyone's help. EDIT: A business license is quite expensive in this city compared to another one nearby that I'm registered with. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Jul 2018 10:33 PM PDT I provide services for small businesses in my community and I am looking for advice from other business owners on how you have found success with building relationships with potential leads. How do you get yourself in front of the decision maker of that company and how does that initial conversation transition into an appointment for your services? Thank you in advance! One Sole Proprietor, One Business License, Two DBAs? Posted: 06 Jul 2018 03:27 AM PDT I currently have a sole proprietorship operating under a DBA. Could I register another DBA and operate as a "second" business without filing a new business license? Would I be able to open a new bank account under the second DBA name? [link] [comments] |
Do not make the same mistake I made and register your business in Delaware! Posted: 05 Jul 2018 11:26 AM PDT This was written all wrong, my apologies, I can accept when I make a mistake so let me re write this. I've been told there's a huge mis conception going around about delaware being the haven for EVERYONE who wants to start a business, and it's just not entirely true. Just do not register with Delaware right away, you might regret it, or you might not, but fact of the matter is, you should be speaking to a CPA with tax law knowledge first about where you should register your business. CPA's are the right people to talk to, don't always believe what a website says right off the bat, ask questions and find your own answers. That's all. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 09:17 AM PDT I'm 21F, I've wanted to start my own business for years now and most of the time when I bring it up I'm told "It's too difficult", or "I'd never get the funding". I think about this often and still feel like I want to and can do this. In particular I'm trying to start a construction company as I've grown up with a mother and father that worked in construction and I also work in that field. I'm not sure where exactly to start but I'm okay with taking it slowly considering I have time to make this happen and would like to go about it the best way possible. I've kept my credit excellent. I just really need someone to tell me where I would start and what to expect. [link] [comments] |
Is Your Website Really Ready For The Weekly "Promote Your Business" Thread? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 11:00 AM PDT Hi guys, I don't want to be judgmental or take names, but having gone through most of the websites on this week's "promote your business" thread, I couldn't help but ask if you just don't realize that your copy/design needs improvement, or you just don't think it's important? It hurts me even more to see some people offering web design etc services when their own websites clearly show that they lack basic design principles. I understand it's easy to enter the freelance/services business and there are no barriers to entry, but you'd be really doing yourself and your potential clients a favor by learning to do your thing properly first. And then start offering that skill to make money from it. For those not in web design business, I don't mean make your website perfect because no website can be, and chasing perfection is the enemy of getting-things-done. But if you really want your website to turn visitors into leads and customers, it'll be better if you work on ensuring that your website is easy to understand and navigate and looks professional before you start promoting. No offense to anyone! Just wanna help. [link] [comments] |
Online Business Oversaturated? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 06:20 PM PDT Hello everyone. I found out my niche and who I'm creating my business for, but as for the actual service I will provide, I am blank on ideas. The only things that come up to me are social media businesses, such as a YouTube channel where I make videos on my niche. But YouTube seems oversaturated and I have big competitors. I can't come up with any physical product ideas or something besides an online social media business, and I am lacking in creativity. Could anyone help me here? [link] [comments] |

How do I go about trademarking a clothing line name? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:11 PM PDT I have not started the clothing line yet and probly won't do so until another 2-3 years. This may sound like a dumb question but I would already like to trademark the name so I can be ahead. I already thought of a name for the clothing line I want to do and want to trademark the name in the next couple of months. My question is how do I go about trademarking the name and is it ok if I trademark it this early on? Also where do I trademark the name and how much will it cost? Any helpful answers are greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Feedback request for my website on how to start a tutoring company Posted: 05 Jul 2018 09:08 AM PDT I have a small tutoring business in the Boston area, and it's doing quite well. I'm looking to branch out by creating resources on how to start a tutoring business. So far, I have a website, although I'm looking to add a book and some videos in the future. Content of the website so far:
Anything else I should put on there? What would you all want out of a how-to guide? Also, if anyone wants a link to comment on the design or content of my website, let me know. [link] [comments] |
Just because you currently don't offer it, doesn't mean you can't offer it Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:50 AM PDT Today i've been trying to source something a little different to what some businesses offer. Without going into too much detail, I am ready to order something which is available from several suppliers, but with my custom dimensions. I will be purchasing a volume of around 50,000. I've made 3 phone calls so far, and after briefly explaining my requirements to the person who answers the call, they've all immediately told me "no, we don't offer that". If i owned a B2B firm and the receptionist turned down work we could make a custom price on, simply because it's not on the list of services, I would be furious. Sure, they may get similar enquiries very often, but in general I think this is such poor business practice to be so inflexible with potential clients [link] [comments] |
Any Recommendations for a comprehensive guide for starting a small business? Posted: 05 Jul 2018 05:52 AM PDT Hello, Im hoping to find any book recommendations from people for comprehensive guides for starting a small business. I just finished Becoming your own boss in 12 months" which was very good but lacking in details. I also been using the SBA website but I still feel like im lacking things. Posted: 05 Jul 2018 07:56 AM PDT If you were starting one today, which one would you choose? I feel that all of them have some positives and negatives but wondering what your thoughts are? And if anyone owns one of these businesses, would you recommend it or start a different one? I currently own a company but it is speciality retail and has a tremendous amount of headaches anymore, which I won't get into. I am thinking lawn service, pressure washing, residential painting, cleaning, or window washing. I am leaning towards painting or exterior cleaning but wanted some thoughts. Thanks! Posted: 05 Jul 2018 01:44 PM PDT I own a company with a retail store and service department (recurring services and repairs). Some of our leads/complaints are called in or emailed but most are generated in the retail store and just get written down on a piece of paper and then left for me or a manager to make contact or delegate. I would like a system where one of my retail employees can just type in the information which would be sent to myself or a manager and then we can schedule it or assign it to someone else. I have looked at a couple of CRM's but they seem much more robust than what I need and we already have a system in place for disbatching, routing, billing, etc once the lead gets converted into a new service so I'm not looking to revamp our entire system. I hope what I'm looking for makes sense. Thanks! TLDR: looking for a system where one of my employees can add a lead or customer complaint and have it notify me and/or a manager so we can address it or assign it to someone else. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 05 Jul 2018 09:00 AM PDT I am interested in starting a business that will deal with the novel creation of designer organisms and software related to such efforts. I will be the only owner of this company, and if I do decide to raise some capital in the future, it will probably be through some form of debt financing. Lab activies will be run out of spaces in Illinois and Wisconsin, and web services will be offered through an online portal. With this information in mind, which state would be best to form this company in? Is there a particular entity type (LLC, corp, etc...), or certain elections I should look at?
