    Fuck NASBA

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:23 AM PDT

I submitted my app in the middle of May. They say due to high volume it will take up to six weeks. Perfect, I can study for FAR and be ready when my NTS comes. I call NASBA after six weeks, wait 45 minutes to talk to someone, and they tell me I won't get my NTS for another 2-4 weeks. Fuck this stupid organization.

Any advice to a 30yr old about to start his first accounting class and attempt a career switch with no previous experience?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 07:24 AM PDT

First off, I'd like to say that I have used the search tool and read about people in similar situations then myself, who'd like to switch careers.

I'm making 40k doing investigative work for my state. It deals nothing with accounting. I'm looking at WGU online for the BS in accounting. The credits go towards CPA which is a plus, but I obviously can't network since it's an online school.

My plan is to follow up with a business school after getting my BS and just pay for the masters as a way to make connections, which will hopefully get me another job as an intern making at least what I make now and able to survive.

I've read that Excel and Quickbook knowledge was a big plus..in addition to YouTube. Anything specific?

I'm just trying to take advantage of the time I'll be studying and would like to study the things that matter. Not sure if I want to go public, industry, specialize in tax, audit, etc. just yet.

    Thanks everyone

    Switching career from accounting?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:37 PM PDT

I wake up and end my day hating my job.

It's only been one year and I fucking hate it. My current job makes me not want to further my accounting career.

Has anyone made a successful and satisfying career switch from accounting/financials?

[Rant] I wasn't promoted to senior because I wasn't asking for work enough

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:53 AM PDT

So they love my work ethic, how efficient I was, but said I didn't tell the managers what my progress was on the jobs I was on.

I told the senior on the job where I was thinking that was sufficient. I guess not. Just really annoyed. I already have my CPA I don't exactly need the work experience. I just want that darn title to help with other future jobs. So now I'll be annoying then every day telling them what i'm doing and what I have in my plate. Hope that works and I get promoted before next busy season or I'll probably be finding a new job

Every question is subjective. How do you know what the BEST answer is when the four choices could be reasonable?

Career Change into Accounting Questions (BS vs MA)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:47 PM PDT

I'm moving to the US soon to be with my spouse and I'm looking at changing from my current career (television production) into accounting. I currently have a BA in Journalism (not from the US) and a few years working experience in that field.

I was planning on taking some community college courses towards an Associates Degree to begin. I am not really interested in getting the Associates degree and want instead to transfer those credits towards either a Bachelors of Science in Accounting, or using the BA I already have plus the prerequisite courses (from the community college) to apply for a Masters of Accounting.

Do either one one of those options seem 1) plausible 2) better for future employment prospects 3) better for passing the CPA exam and fulfilling other regulatory requirements.

I'm not trying to become the next [insert famous accountant - does that exist?], but the information on many school websites are exaggerated/misleading and I just want some sound advice about how best to make a career in a new country. Any other thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated!!

[CAN] How many years to make $150k?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:35 PM PDT

I see the median CPA compensation is usually around $100k in BC but I thought CPAs were earning more than that?

I'm age 23 right now. An articling student making $42k a year. In how many years can I expect to be making $150-200k? What is usually the upper limit for salary for CPAs?

Big 4 Audit Summer vs Winter Internship?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:33 PM PDT

I know that you would work more hence make more overtime for a winter audit internship. Do you think it is worth staying an extra semester (I'll still finish in 4 years) to to a winter internship over summer? I am considering winter since you will make more. Any thoughts?

Do your friends/family know who you audit?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 05:44 PM PDT

Always wondered this. Is it considered unethical for your friends and family to know who you audit even if you aren't talking specifics about the client's situation?

Is it okay to apply for another internship this fall after going through the recruiting process early this year?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:47 PM PDT

I have no idea how these things go. I just want to know so I can start my plan of attack lol.

I went through the recruiting process a quarter ago for winter internships and got one for winter 2019.

My question is I know fall recruiting is for summer internships (correct me if I'm wrong). Is it okay to apply at firms if I interviewed for early this year? I'm thinking it would be awkward if I have to present myself to the same people.

I just want to have more internship experience.

Breaking into public with CPA- what’s my best bet as a young professional ~1 year out of school?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 09:32 AM PDT

I graduated in may of 2017 and took a rotational program role in the finance organization of a F500 company. However, I'm beginning to realize that I'm not learning as much as I wanted to when I accepted the position. The company isn't really one I can see myself sticking around at long-term, either. My experience has pretty much been a year of two different GL accounting roles, performing tasks like account reconciliations, posting JEs, kpi analysis, and other core accounting functions. I also have ~8 months of internal auditing experience from an internship, which included performing various testing and procedures for the regional auditing firm that performed our audit (using their work papers and procedures).

Having passed the CPA exams, I will be applying for my license in September, when I will have fulfilled the experience requirement for my state. My question is, will I be qualified for any experienced staff/associate roles at firms? Doesn't have to be B4 necessarily, but I'm not sure id get the experience I'm looking for at a local or small firm. Or will I basically have to start at the bottom of the totem pole? If that's the case, would I still want to apply as an experienced hire (for entry level, as opposed to campus entry level)?

Any advice the professionals here could offer about how to make the transition to public from industry would be appreciated.

Impact of changing my graduation date to November 2018 instead of March 2019

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 12:29 PM PDT

I have the opportunity to finish school in November 2018 instead of March 2019. That being said, I have one more recruiting season. Will making this change have any impact on potential job opportunities particular with Big 4 and mid tier firms? Thanks!

Jumping from public to industry right after senior promotion - What kind of salary bump should I expect?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 02:26 PM PDT

Currently prepping my resume for the job-hunt right after I receive my promotion in two months, and getting into contact with some local headhunters via LinkedIn

If I expect $65k once I get my promotion (based on what people at my firm got last year), and add a 15-20% average salary bump that I see a lot of people on this sub say they get when they jump, does it sound reasonable to target positions in the $75-78k range?

I had one of the headhunters scoff at my target range, which I know can be a challenge to get, but it's not unreasonable, right?

Where is the money in accounting?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:58 AM PDT

I'm not talking about being a B4 partner or a CFO of a global conglomerate. I'm talking career paths that might not be your typical accounting gigs. For instance, I'm auditing this investment management company founded by a bunch of ex B4 auditors who are now raking in the cash. It got me thinking there have to be some non-traditional avenues in which one could make a killing. Thoughts?

    Career path after college

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:31 AM PDT

Was hoping someone could help me out. A bit of background information: Just graduated a 4 year. About a 3.3 GPA, Beta Alpha Psi, VITA. I do not have any direct Accounting experience but have been working in the Finance department of a law firm for a bit. I am looking for a Staff Accountant position and do not plan on taking the CPA exam.

I spoke with a recruiter at Accountemps and was told that I would need to do AP/AR for a bit before I could be considered for a Staff Accountant position. Is this realistic? After reading some of the older posts in this sub I am not sure what kind of job I should be aiming for. Should I try a different temp agency? Thanks!
